So I love John because he makes mistakes and says "Oops" and just moves on. I love how his pans show wear and tear on the outside because when you see other cooks their pans look so perfect like they never stain the outside of them. He spilled milk and just kept going. This is real cooking. I love it. Nice to know that other chefs have messy pans that they can't clean off on the outside but have been used often and it is just refreshing! Thanks John!

You can just exchange the milk for non sweetened soy milk and the heavy cream for lactose free cream or even coconut cream - still works perfectly - from a fellow lactose intolerant who loves Mac and cheese lol
You can eat anything in moderation. I would rather have real whipping cream for my sweet potato and pumpkin pie then the stuff from the container. Any day. Especially TG and Christmas dinners.

Made this last week with smoked cheddar and Gouda cheese. It was amazing. Made a few changes. Used cold milk with hot roux. Didn’t have to worry about burning myself. Made broccoli Mac and cheese soup with the leftovers. Delicious 😋

This came out so, so good. I had a bunch leftover only because I made it for the holidays and we had a bunch of sides and not many people. My picky toddler happily ate it with me the following few days for lunch, couldn’t get enough! Going to be remaking it soon!

Just made it yesterday for Thanksgiving and it was delicious, I made half the recipe and used cheddar I and Monterey cheese it came out as described in the video delicious,specially the toasted breadcrumbs on top, if it’s your first time making it, try this recipe, you won’t be disappointed!

Lol. I’m still laughing at myself for the time I doubled the pasta without doubling the recipe. 😂. Thank you John for making this video because I’m a visual learner. Also thanks for not adding bay leaves or mustard powder because I don’t use it for any other recipe and it’s a waste to only buy mustard powder for Mac and cheese. I love nutmeg and you are slowly convincing me to buy the nut to grate it fresh but I still need to finish the container I have.

I made this with regular shredded cheddar and pepper jack cuss it’s all I had but it still came out sooooo goooood
I've been making mac-n-cheese this way for years. It's basically the Fanny Farmer recipe. If you want to "kick it up a notch", add a Tbsp of dijon mustard and 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper to your sauce and 1/2 cup of nearly crispy crumbled bacon on top (It'll finish crisping in the oven).

...This is almost exactly the Recipe my Grandmother taught me, with the exception of finely diced, sautéed onion ( white or yellow) in the Recipe, and I like Guyere in it as well, it just melts and blends beautifully with either White ( and ) or Yellow Sharp Cheddar.
I make homemade bread crumbs , and top it the same way.
Can we just say how Genuine this man is ... he makes a " a Kitchen booboo " keeps right on going with things... it's a delight. I often just watch to enjoy seeing something I haven't made before, or to just enjoy watching his Channel. Bon` Appétit. 😊🍽

I love that you are really cooking with all that goes with it. You show every step and unexpected mishap and misstep. You’re a great cook thanks a lot. Things usually go a little a stray in my kitchen. Thanks for showing everything.
John is my go-to recipe guy and guru since I found him online a couple of years ago. If it's not within his repertoire of recipes I change my meal direction and consider something else. I figure if he didn't find it interesting enough to cook himself then why should I. He also seems to not only enjoy the cooking but the eating as well. The only online chef with whom I could see myself breaking bread.

Delicious and easy. The bread crumbs are awesome. I didn’t fry them though. Combined them with melted butter and put them on top. Then convected at 400 degrees and they turned out perfectly crispy and brown. One less pan to wash too.
Milk should be cold out the fridge for white sauce otherwise you gets lumps. And you can definitely prepare it in a pot and avoid spilling. The heavy cream is not necessary but you can substitute a part of the milk with cream. The ratio for a thick cheese sauce is 1/1/10 butter/flour/liquid and cheese to taste. Cheese will thicken the sauce considerably.
