      I'm from the UK, born the same year (but obviously not quite as old as you ;). Our second family car was a Morris Minor that I later went on to buy/inherit. An exciting quirk to driving her was the drivers seat was only secured to the floor on one side, so every time she went round a left hand corner, it felt like the car was up on two wheels :)) Favourite feature was the foot operated high/low beam switch! a silver round button on the floor that looked like a flat mushroom, left of the clutch pedal.

    I was involved with a 914 (Electric!) race car back in the late 90's. The brakes are terrible, but you can improve matters quite a bit by removing the pressure limiting valve from the rear firewall and throwing it as far as you can. It's the highest point in the whole hydraulic system, but has no provision for bleeding! We then fitted BMW 318i front calipers (mounting lugs need skimming), which gives you larger pistons and a much bigger pad. The chassis is quite lacking in stiffness, even when not rusty, so it's worth investing in a 'flexi-flyer' reinforcement kit.

    The Canadian history of this one would have put me off, because of the road salt used in the northern areas. Tim should have searched for one of these while he was here in the US southwest. That's where all the good restorable cars come from. I'd swap a Subaru flat 4 or 6 into it if it was mine, even if it means losing the 'frunk' for radiators.

    • @nickpappas4133
      @nickpappas4133 9 місяців тому

      You would be surprised how good a stock 2.0 litre motor runs and more reliable than a Subaru, never have to worry about head gaskets or coolant issues. If you drove a good one you would be impressed. I was a Porsche tech and when I serviced my first 914 2.0 litre in 1973 I bought one and still own it, all original, but of course I didn’t drive it in a Canadian winter.

    Would be interesting to know where in Canada in began life. Lots of provinces here use massive amounts of road salt in the winter. I’d predict, based on the cars condition, even with previous repairs, it likely didn’t see too much winter driving. Being in Florida is, by comparison, a walk in the park.

    This is certainly a project. With all old cars, one man's meat and all that, I never really understood the interest in these cars, but thankfully we are all different. That is a shed, it will be very interesting seeing how YCR tackle it. maybe time to invest in a Celette jig? Don't know if anyone else caught it, but the amazingly comprehensive comment from someone who was obviously an expert on restoring these cars has just mysteriously disappeared. I was going to suggest YCR offer him a temporary job! Anyhow, tons of great content to come on what is fast becoming a mega favourite channel.

      We haven't removed any comments, we don't need to invest in a jig as we already have one and obviously it will need going on the jig as you will see in comming vids. I (Steve) have been restoring cars like this for almost 30 years so no need to employ anyone. But thank you for watching.

      @@yorkshirecarrestorationThink I might have caught you at a bad moment or something. The comment I mentioned was the most comprehensive I think I have ever seen on anybody's channel and would have given massive insight, I did not insinuate at all that you had removed it, just that it had gone. I have watched every video you have ever posted and have been a subscriber from day 1, and I just cannot remember ever seeing you work on a car for the channel on a jig. The line about offering him a job was an obvious joke, or so I thought. I have never given YCR a negative comment yet, and can't see that I ever would.

      Same with motorcycles. Yet my favourite bikes are the oldest (1977) and the “rescues” are the most satisfying. When I ride a beautiful looking & working bike that had been tortured, killed and left in a rotting shed, I enjoy every moment of the stupidly expensive restoration I’ve done. And that was with me doing most of the work.

Then started tearing into it, and that underseal was sprayed over a lot of rust, and just made the rust even worse. Looks like very low quality body shop did repairs on it, rear quarters had rust covered with glued on sheets of metal covered in over a cm of filler. I'm doing all the repairs right though.

    I like that shade of blue so much that I'd like to use it on my fiat spider. Can you tell me the RAL code or the Porsche code? Thanks and good luck with the project.
