- Short interview with Jools Holland followed by footage from 3rd April 1979. An early lineup including John Bentley (who had just replaced Harri Kakoulli) on bass and Gilson Lavis (who had replaced Paul Gunn several years earlier) on drums.

Masters of words and lyrics.
The wonderful Chris Difford
While he was falling over he drunk himself back sober 😂
Thank goodness 4 The Old Grey Whistle Test !! A Pivotal Programme In Terms Of " Showcasing A Plethora Of Brilliant Acts " Squeeze " Very Definitely Being One Of Them " !!!! From Adrian Browne 1965
Thanks 4 Your Support Re My " OGWT " / Squeeze Post !! Take care From Adrian Browne 1965
Yes he plays keyboards on the records, but it seems strange to see Glenn not on guitar in a live performance!
Love the new wave-y synth
Met Jools last night " A Perfect Gentleman " Very Polite " !! Was Also lucky enough to have met his support act " Galia Arad " Who I sincerely hope will be able too establish themselves in the " Near Future " !!! From Adrian Browne 1965
True, I'd forgotten about him! I've amended the description. Thanks.
Winston Churchill on keyboards.😎
I saw that car PEN15! it was a white rolls Royce!think it was in fulham when ı saw it......and howled with laughter!
"I've made love to Escorts, Princesses...and I once burned myself on the exhaust pipe of a Mini Cooper".
Classic
@gleemonex1966 yep a travis bean TB2000, alan lancaster played one in quo for their 1982 tour
Well I must admit, that's been puzzling me too! So I've just looked at the vids for Cool For Cats and Up The Junction which show it more closely and my conclusion is......I dunno!
I've worked in guitar shops for the last 25 years and I've never seen one. At first I thought it might be a Warwick but they weren't made till 1982.
Possibly a Wal or a Dean? Maybe it's handmade?
Anyone else have any ideas?
No it ain't! On his MySpace page, John Bentley says that he joined Squeeze 2 weeks before Cool For Cats reached number two in March 1979. This is from 3rd April 1979. I've met John a couple of times and this is definitely him. I did make the same mistake myself originally! (see 2nd comment on this page).
Great find.
I'm sorry to have to tell you, but that is John Bentley on bass not the great Harry Kakouli. Harry had already been shunted by the time this session took place..
@keef71
Thanks keef71. That's that question answered!
That's ironic as I've actually met John Bentley!! 0/10 for observation on my part. Just as well this isn't Wikipedia! Reason for the confusion is that I used the Cool For Cats CD as my reference. Looking at my original vinyl copy it is indeed John Bentley and the CD is wrong. I think I'll rewrite my description!
Kevin Wilkinson was a drummer for many bands including the Waterboys and China Crisis. He killed himself several years ago... So sad..
That's Gilson Lavis on drums.
@kevj247 That would be Keith. Kevin Wilkinson (no relation) was the drummer on the Ridiculous album in 1995.
@AcrossfromtheAlamo its a travis bean
What bass is John Bentley playing, it looks similar to one used by Sting circa 1979?
Looks like a Travis Bean TB-2000
Is that Peter Perret's Brother-In-Law on Bass?
No this bass player is John Bentley who had just replaced Harri Kakoulli, who was indeed Peter Perret's brother in law. Some copies of the Cool for Cats album name the wrong bass player which caused confusion. I met John a couple of times. I repaired his electro acoustic guitar and he invited me to a private pub gig Squeeze were doing in London. Unfortunately, I just couldn't make it! Damn!
Straight from the horse's mouth: John Bentley on his MySpace page says that he joined Squeeze two weeks before Cool For Cats got to number 2. This means that my unusual green cover copy of the album is wrong. It also means that the book "Squeeze song by song" is wrong, too!
That funky bass at the end reminiscent of Prince.
Birdienumnum Prince was reminiscent of Squeeze.
not the best joke from jools holland but i'll forgive him for his musical ingenuity
see my comment......it was a real reg no.
Doesn't sound like much now. 😀
kevin wilkinson didnt join squeeze until after the reunion in 1985
Was there ever a time when Jools Holland was not cool?
Hello again, jonasausage!
I don't know. Where is kevin wilkinson?
Ask me one on General Knowledge!
Why would you be looking for Kevin Wilkinson on a live recording fro, 1979.
@@nechesh I remember leaving that reply to "Jonasausage". I can't believe it was 11 years ago! Clearly I was puzzled by his question about Kevin Wilkinson but he appears to have deleted it. It seems he was confused! And here I am 11 years later, still on UA-cam. In fact it's just past my 15th anniversary of opening my YT account!
@@nickhirst999 yeah, weird. Wilkinson was actually only the drummer on one album in 1995. Gilson Lavis will always be THE Squeeze drummer for me (and probably most people).
@@nechesh Me too! I was SO disappointed when I saw Squeeze live for the first time in around 1994 and Pete Thomas had replaced Gilson. No disrespect to Pete, but Gilson's the man!
