Saw them several times between 1974 and 1980. They were a local pub band playing around Deptford & Greenwich and at local festivals. Always top notch music. Met Glen and lived opposite Jools. They were old school friends of a friend of mine.
Thank you for sharing these. I never thought I'd see these "REUNITED" episodes again. I loved the episode featuring "Haircut". Nick Heyward looks better today in 2024 than when these were aired in 2005. SQUEEZE is/was brilliant. I saw them at The Ritz in NYC . We were packed like sardines. And "Tempted" was the song of the day😊
It means nothing really, but I can tell you I have met Glenn Tilbrook a couple of times. And you will not find a nicer, more down to earth, very gifted entertainer.
I came across Difford a couple of times. Npt for a long time. A friend of my close friend. I always thought he came across as a bit 'staid' but he was a cool dude.
Enjoy them both that's what's great about music No need to compare anyone to each other ....or to the incomparable Beatles. Just say Squeeze is your favorite band because they certainly are one of mine. They are fantastic
Funny that Chris made that comment about The Waltons - I saw Difford & Tilbrook together few years ago (2015) and the show opened with them 'waking up' in a bed together and then starting the show. Very funny and an excellent show. It's good that they put their differences aside, such great songwriters.
Very cool when the bass player said his son realized his dad played Madison Square Garden and he might be a very cool father to have !! So neat to jam with guys who have reached the pinnacle of music venues.
I always thought this was one of the most underrated and talented bands in rock n roll. If you're young and don't know much about Squeeze, get their best hits album. Every song is brilliant and the lyrics are every bit as good as any you'll hear.
Although this episode sure ends depressingly, the good news is that by 2007, they were together, even with Jools on keyboards, and they just fucking crushed it that summer. Front row of the Greek Theatre in LA/Hollywood.
So glad to know that all's well, ends well. Squeeze has reformed with Difford and Tilbrook. They have a a new line up with a bad-ass lady bassist, a fun loving keyboardist, and a delghtfully whimsical drummer. I saw them in Scottsdale, Arizona last month and they sounded AMAZING Their new C.D. is called, "Cradle To The Grave" and it's AMAZING. Chris and Glenn have mautured and they all seem to be having a wonderful time touring. Time certainly can and in the case of this band, heal.
I don't know about that....they had a few great versions of this band....With Jools and Bentley and Lavis....With Carrack and Bentley and Lavis....With Carrack and Wilkinson and Lavis....Current touring band is also very talented...Stephen Large is larger than life and Simon Hansen is very charismatic.....Glenn had checked his ego at the door and they really put on a great show...Their lack of mainstream accolades means nothing to their TRUE FANS.....Great songs, Great songwriting, Great musicianship....The best 80's Pop Band by far !!
I don't believe the members will ever realize the impact they had on generations of music listeners. The songs were absolutely brilliant. These guys didn't have the drug problem but they had the individual ego problem. Talented group to say the least.
The solo tour wound up being a show that was really special to me. His solo show in Chicago played a bar called Martyrs, and he told us that the last few weeks of the tour had a ton of rain, and it was a beautiful night. He offered us a choice of a regular encore or he could put on an acoustic guitar and all of us could "take a walk." Naturally, the audience chose "let's all go for a walk" and he and his whole audience walked a few blocks up and down Lincoln Avenue. Every few doors he'd gather everyone around and play a song. After a few songs we went back to Martyrs and he did a few last songs on electric guitar to finish the set. It was just a really cool evening, and such a great thing for him to take a chance and do something a little different. Just saw the current lineup and loved it -- they still sound great.
Seen Glen tilbrook solo about 6 times now and he's brilliant, also seen him with Chris difford in Edinburgh and that was a cracking gig as well. Also seen squeeze a few times and one of the times Paul Carrick played keyboard.
I opened for him once years ago. One of the greatest shows I've ever been a part of. I played my absolute best, had a huge crowd response, Glen goes "wow I'm scared to go on now, you really got them going." Right. He went onstage and completely schooled me. One of the finest performers I've ever seen.
I have nothing but fond memories in 82? when they played The Ritz on E. 15th in NYC- promoting. Well the single at the time was "Tempted". We were packed in WAY over capacity crushing/leaning/ dancing/bopping up and down with strangers. It was like everyone on the floor was one unit. A complete nightmare if it were now, but age 20, those things don't matter. Life is forever, etc.etc. ...but thank you SQUEEZE for an incredible night, such a happy memory.
I saw Squeeze twice on the same tour with Hall and Oates frontrunning. They are probably the most underrated band of all time and I'm so glad they got back together and are becoming ever more popular on both sides of the pond
Paul Carrack sang lead on the original "Tempted." Carrack also sang with "Mike and the Mechanics." (Living Years) and "Ace" (How Long) and by himself (Don't Shed a Tear.") Elvis Costello produced "Tempted" and can be heard singing on the 2nd verse.
Squeeze was one of the best bands ever :) In the very first days of MTV, 'Black Coffe in Bed' and 'Tempted' ruled. Great stuff. Sorry I missed them in Colorado when they came through.
Chris and Glenn apart write really good songs, but together, they make something special. Those two together harmonize so so so well, and chris words compliment glens music so god damn well
I spent a bit of my pocket money on Squeeze singles trying to get as many of the coloured vinyls as they put out. A great era for buying singles over here.
Glen dont know just how much people loved squeeze wake up Glen I play your stuff every day for years and it is still great love it and you are very handsome
My first concert. 1982, Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, Long Island, NY. Squeeze was the headliner. I was 14 and thought they were absolutely the best band ever. I wore out three different cassettes of East Side Story and prided myself on knowing all the words to Piccadilly (or at least thought I did! Try figuring out the line of "adult films and Trini Lopez" without Google-doh!). They headlined and the opening acts were a little known band out of Athens, GA called REM who you couldn't understand and bounced around on stage like some kind of weird mop tied to a pogo stick. The next act was far superior and still gets my blood pumping-The English Beat! Ranking Roger OWNED the stage! So good, so cool, so fun. Makes me want to go back but then I think about my bad skin, dorky haircut, and braces and think better of it. Thanks for the memories!
I was there also! The Stray Cats were great but I would have preferred The English Beat show (To my recollection that was the other support band.) Anyone who doesn't have Squeeze in their record/casette/Cd collection don't know what they're missing!
Me and my son are going see this band in Dublin in Aug as well as Madness glad to see both bands that broke up and back together i feel young again thanks guys .
What a bloody shame. That would have been an incredible thing to see. Such a lot of talent in one space. Love those songs. Cool for cats always makes me smile. I'm a londoner so i love the sound. Its sadly missed living in melbourne. Lets get The Jam back together :-)
I've seen Squeeze Live in Hollywood in 1978 & 1979 with The Buzzcocks & 999! @ The Palace or Hollywood Palladium? I forget? It was a very long time ago! I think I've seen them with The Motors Also!
I always loved the musical dynamic between Glenn and Chris. Their harmonies, that one octave lower Chris blend, is perfect. To take Chris' lyrics and write music to them, is amazing. I always think of Brian WIlson and how he wrote complex tunes (minor keys, key changes, diminished chords, slash chords) based in Jazz which I always see in Glenn's music. It's what has kept both writers' music to stand the test of time. Brian needed a lyricist like Chris (although he did quite well on Pet Sounds with Tony Asher). I also respected how Glenn did it in reverse. It's common to have the melody, then coming up with the words.
They always gloss over things,..Gilson was almost on board but Jools was keen to just say no way as if it must have an acrimonious bust up possibly with Glen or Chris or both back in the day...Happens in family's a lot.
I saw Squeeze at the Nassau County Coliseum, with the Beat, and REM. You Americans know the The Beat as the English Beat. We trained out from Manhattan. Such an amazing show. Worst part we missed REM. I remember being told about REM six months later and it turns out that I could have heard and known them before.
I didn't watch Bands Reunited much at the time. It was shunted 'round the schedules and I thought that my next favourite band would be along any minute so I didn't need those that have gone to reform. Well now it's several years since I've had a new favourite band because the industry find it easier to promote a single person be it reality star, rapper or sportsperson. What they should have had was someone like McCartney or Wilco Johnson to remind people that sooner or later they won't be able to reform. Can you imagine them trying to make this show now. Reform S Club or Girls Aloud....and of course so many more people have died.
Seen Squeeze many times & they are true gentleman. Great musicians & songwriters. Think covid has scuppered some of their resent plans but you can be sure you will see & hear them soon. 👍🇬🇧🎼🎼🎸🎤
For all of the comments about it being a shame and name calling, you do realize that they have played together in recent years. The videos are on here.
I saw Squeeze over the summer of 2021. Jools, Keith and Gilson weren't a part of the band, but that's fine. The guy who was playing the keyboards absolutely killed it for Slap and Tickle. I will say if they are capable of being a part of the band, I don't know what would hold them back since I'll say it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. The only ones missing out would be them.
Good to see most of the bands featured in this series get back together for just one more gig. Sad that it was not to happen with Squeeze, obviously some of those old wounds run deep. Not surprising it was Holland, as he always was an odd duck ... like the time he got a colonoscopy on live UK Friday night TV.
It depends on what kind of Squeeze you want? Do you want the laid back Soul Boys who sung "Tempted", or do you want that zany, manic, post-punk Madness type group who sung "Cool For Cats"? Personally, I prefer the latter!
In their very early days I went to watch Squeeze at Dingwalls at Camden Lock, circa 1977, when they were still playing pubs. There were not many people in a fairly unresponsive audience - maybe 50. As Squeeze were finishing their set, a few people finally decided to show a bit of appreciation with a few whoops, claps and whistles. The band were not impressed. 'Yeah, whoo, whoo, you c***s. I've had more fun p***ing on people down the Kings Road,' was how Tillbrook put it, as they stormed off. They created some brilliant songs.
@@davidlindsay9564 ....true that John was there at the initial stage and is a great player, but vocally, Squeeze was never better than when they had Paul Carrack come back ("Some Fantastic Place" album) with Keith Wilkenson on bass (Listen to the bass in "The Last Time Forever").....he had a more unique bass sound and a better voice than John....but I still enjoyed John's playing on those early Squeeze classics....
Jools = wanker. I played in bands and have had some pretty contentious relationships with band members (e.g., good 'ol fist fights ), still...it wouldn't kill me to get back together for one show.
Agreed. What a wanker! Why can you not reunite because of a keyboard player? He wasn't that essential to the group, anyway. They should have taken the others and got a session guy to fill his part. I know he's a VIP, now.. But *uck him!
Jools is a bigger star in the UK than Squeeze ever was, its far beneath him at this point. He had people like George Harrison ASKING to play on HIS records, he doesn't want to be known as "the piano player in Squeeze" can you blame him? IF he did it, he knows, like Holly Johnson did, they are worth more than being just an episode of some silly show on a lark. The funniest one was them trying to get the Smiths to do it. lol.
@@jacquiwesley455 Jools was a big part of things. But why didn't they ask Paul Carrack (or even Don Snow?) Paul replaced Jools and co sang "tempted" they could have got the East Side Story line up easily.
@Greg Hubbard I knew Jools would be the stumbling block, you would think considering he owed his career to being in Squeeze he would have swallowed his ego and paid his dues. Prick.
Jools will regret his decision ....life is very short .....and cruel sometimes....this would have made a lot of people remember what is was to be like 20 something again.....which is what all us 50 year olds want more than cash money or gold.....how much would you pay to relive just one day 30 years ago ????? Yes life moves on very very quickly nowadays......grey hairs......wrinkles grow bigger....as do waistlines....friends are lost and gone forever.......squeeze were shit hot with tunes that stood the test of time.....defo goes into the ‘ it’s a crying shame’ folder of life......so many people loved squeeze.....a tour would have been sold out in minutes........there are a lot of older people with money to spend but it’s memories that last forever......written by a fat balding 50 year old who yearns for days gone by........even just one day.....peace and love to all.....
BR is a great concept but as you hear in most episodes, and if you've ever been in a serious band that's had some degree of success then broke up, it really is like a marriage or relationship. Multiple personalities, egos, clashes, and grievances come into play. It's not as simple as getting everyone onstage to jam. These band members have history with each other that isn't all peaches and cream. A lot of bruiser egos, slights, jealousies, and resentments. And that's just among the band's that do agree to reunite. Others have put their past behind them and moved onto bigger things and just won't do it.
Paul Carrack was the keyboardist who replaced Jools Holland when he left the band. It probably would have been awkward to have them both play the same concert together. Plus Glen likes singing Tempted himself.
@@ChristiaanIngram well Jools didn't do it, so why not get Paul instead?. Glen would like to sing it with Paul more. If Paul didn't, then get Don Snow. Keith was the 3rd bassist, if you pass up Harri, and Bentley, then you can pass on Jools. They easily could have gotten a solid line up. They blew it. They HAD the "play" line up as it was.
The Prospect of Whitby in Wapping, east London. I think it used to be called The Town of Ramsgate and is reputed to be haunted by a Judge Jeffries. Last time I went there in 1991 I saw Suzi Quatro drinking in there with a friend. She looked at me and my ex and smiled as we were wearing leather jackets.
How Bands Reunited works: Bandmate 1: Was't that Aamer guy a jerk the way he ambushed us? Bandmate 2: Totally! Screw that guy Bandmate 1: I'm not reuniting for his dumb show Bandmate 2: You know what would mess up his Band Reunited show the most...let's reunite 6-12 months after the show Bandmate 1: Sounds good. We definitely can't reunite because of scheduling/personality conflicts...but then 6-12 months later we are totally back together again Bandmate 2: Perfect
Well, it's 2021, and I just saw Squeeze last night, so I think they got back together at some point. At least Glen and Chris did. Great show!
I just saw a spot about a Tears for Fears reunion so I was wondering about Squeeze. Glad to hear it mate. Cheers!
Going to see them in November in Edinburgh.. hopefully it’s good 👍

I saw Squeeze last summer in 2019 and they were amazing. I will always love this band.
Chris looked so sad. The way he keeps glancing around waiting for people at the end is absolutely heartbreaking. He was genuinely sad 😢

They should have made an album and called it Till Diff Do Us Part.👍😁
Just saw them last week here in DC (Wolf Trap) W/ Psychodelic Furs. Great Show!!! Glenn is an underrated guitar player!!!
Watched them at Daytona Beach Florida spring break 30 years ago, it was brilliant.

I hope those men reunite and find love for each other again
Come on guys just do it, what a great band, what a great it was for music. ( magic)
I saw them last night at Newcastle at maddness gig the moment they started i was hooked and they were fantastic
Oh Lord!😂
They were, in fact, great!
forget jules then ....get paul carrack back in !

It depends on what kind of Squeeze you want? Do you want the laid back Soul Boys who sung "Tempted", or do you want that zany, manic, post-punk Madness type group who sung "Cool For Cats"? Personally, I prefer the latter!
Gargamel Goodbread ...Either version for me.....and 7 years after my comment they were geared up to tour again before The covid 19 kicked in
You mean Jools?
I’m sure Paul Carrack would have done it if they’d asked. It would have been nice to hear “Tempted” done properly.
Kevy Nova Paul Carrack is one of the best and most underrated singers in history.
To me, that was the whole problem with this failed venture. It wouldn’t have mattered without him at least for Tempted.
Paul Carrack is worth a thousand Jools Hollands.
Or maybe Elvis Costello singing his accompaning vocals from the original recording?
With Paul Carrack involved,it goes from Squeeze to SQUEEZE!!!!
Took my wife to see squeeze last year, she is a lot younger than me and didn’t know the band, they was unbelievable…she said
For my money they were the #1 best band of the 1980's. On any shore.
I miss shows like this
😥 Would have LOVED to have seen them back together!
sad egoes for those who said no..they never grew up. i saw that they finally picked up...
Difford and Tillbrook were the Lennon and McCartney of the 80's!
Dave Carr i wouldnt go that far they were good great even but lennon mccartney no way
No not at all I would of said Hall + Oates and/or Stewart/Lennox, Tennant/Lowe
What are you smoking?
Good shout. Would also raise Coleman/Walker.
Not hardly, but they were very good.
wow glen tillbrook drinks magic hat #9 just like me. ITS LIKE IM ONE OF THE STARS
I never thought it would happen ...
.... excellent
Difford and Tilbrook formed a new version of Squeeze in 2007.
...with classic era bassist John Bentley on bass,he was more important than Keith.
@@dinopappous6639 Gad yes, 'Big Beng' is sorely lacking without Keith on bass...
@@jacquiwesley455 No don't *uck him!.." Fuck 'Im *
Jools has them on his show whenever they tour and he plays with them. Do your homework.
Terry, Google ellipsis. You are not quite there...
sometimes friends willing leave.
Jools is bigger than they are. George Harrison ASKED to play on Jool's records. what if it was terrible.?
Saw them last night. Great show with Boy George.
Why didn't they ask Paul Carrack who sang lead on Tempted?
Saw Squeeze last week. Fucking fantastic! No sir, we got you humor. We always got your humor! Better than ever!
How Bands Reunited works:
Bandmate 1: Was't that Aamer guy a jerk the way he ambushed us?
Bandmate 2: Totally! Screw that guy
Bandmate 1: I'm not reuniting for his dumb show
Bandmate 2: You know what would mess up his Band Reunited show the most...let's reunite 6-12 months after the show
Bandmate 1: Sounds good. We definitely can't reunite because of scheduling/personality conflicts...but then 6-12 months later we are totally back together again
Bandmate 2: Perfect
Yes they have in glasgow !!!!
They did it in the end - its in my profile pic and who needs Jools anyway x
