    Land Rover could easily be defined as “a brand in which everyone has their opinion about before ever driving one.” There seem to be two huge sides to the spectrum. You love them or hate them. Not too many people go “eh, I guess.”
    I’ve discussed it before in other videos, but the L322 Range Rover was the bridge that Land Rover needed to bring the brand into a new light. It changed nearly everything about the brand, and it was one of the best moves the company ever made. But after 7 years and 124,000 miles, what is it like to own today?
    This model is a 2011 Land Rover Range Rover HSE Lux. In 2011, the HSE LUX sat between the HSE and Supercharged models in the US market. So this one has a few extra options that the base model didn’t come with.
    Obviously, the 5.0L V8 from Jag had some hiccups. Timing chain replacement is common after about 80k miles, and you’ll need to do spark plugs and fuel injectors as well. It’s far from cheap to maintain, but in comparison to the 4.4 V8 from BMW, there are fewer common problems. Still some, but fewer.
    As for the exterior, the L322 received a few facelifts during its 10 years of production. It started with a face that looked comparable to an updated P38A before evolving into the final facelift, which is a slightly closer resemblance to the modern L405 Range Rover that replaced the L322.
    Now, as far as living with it goes, let’s go over some of my expenses with it. This doesn’t include repairs and everything. That can be found in the Cost of Ownership video. This is about things you’ll deal with regularly, such as fuel.
    A typical fill up for me is around $70, which is usually $3.00/gallon. That’s going to change from time to time, but it’s usually an average of $70 for a tank. Insurance for full coverage with State Farm runs about $184/mo with a clean driving record. Obviously, again, that’s going to change based on tons of different aspects.
    A strange part of Range Rover ownership, though, is constantly being on the lookout for something that doesn’t sound right. I take a lot of pride in the L322, so I like to make sure everything is in working order.
    In a small town like this, though, a LOT of people seem to think it’s new. I won’t lie, the attention the Range Rover gets can be fun. It’s no Ferrari or even an Aston Martin, but it gets comments and looks in parking lots and drive-thrus, which I frequent.
    Now let’s talk about interior space. It’s got some here, and here, and here, but not much here. If you have a family with long legs, the L322 might not be the best choice. Rear legroom is shocking with the seats in a position where I’m comfortable. Everyone has their own opinion on that, though, but the rear is just a bit too small.
    Boot space or cargo space is ample, though. With the split tailgate, loading the rear with bikes, desks, chairs, trees, or small cities is fairly simple. I’ve used the Range Rover to move offices a few times, and it’s so easy. For small moves, the Range Rover handles everything, and it’s one of my favorite parts about it. I might only use the cargo space occasionally, but when I do, it transforms into a truck.
    If there’s not enough room, you can tow a trailer to fit the rest, but I won’t need to do that until our next move to Orlando. I’ve had nearly everything in the back of the Range Rover.
    Moving up to the front, let’s talk about driver luxuries. While the Range Rover maybe 7 years old now, it’s far from “dated” on the interior. The TFT display replaces what would normally be a gauge cluster.
    Everything feels very high quality, which makes sense because it is. Living with the luxuries of the Range Rover on a daily basis makes the entire driving experience unique, relaxing, and fun all at the same time.
    The Range Rover is still more than adequate at being the best daily driver SUV around. It conquers every aspect of a luxury SUV. That is, unless you have a tall family. In that case, check out the Discovery or LR4.

      I just joined the club with an 06 SuperCharged 4.2 V8 I got from an auction this past weekend. Drove it home on the bump stops and I think it bottomed out so hard that the front right strut is now pushed up through the top by one inch. Ugh!!!! BUT after going through all the fuses, I found the relay in the back fuse panel to be the problem. Now the airbag suspension works great.... For now,,,, LOL Never owned one before. The head unit/ navigation display is totally dead. Not even the RR logo lights up. No power light. Nada. Checked all fuses and relay. The relay kicks in which gets its power from the display unit, so hopefully a new/used display will fix it.

    Your assessments of owning an L322 are spot on. If you think you can’t afford it, you can’t. I’ve got an 07 HSE Supecharged with 135k on it. I’ve converted it to coil springs to get rid of the air ride headaches and honestly, it rides the same. Yes you do lose the height adjustability for off road but my kit actually lifted the truck about 2” and I fit 275/55’s just fine. I regularly drive my truck back and forth from Houston to Lafayette and it’s always a joy to drive. Thirsty? Yes. More maintenance cost? Almost the same as my F-250 Powerstroke. Actually the oil changes are less by a few bucks. Comfort? No equal from my experiences in Mercedes and BMW. It’s a shame about the timing chain issues in the 5.0. That’s a great performing engine in either form. As far as buying another, there will always be one in my driveway.....

    An L322 2006 Range Rover Supercharged has just come into my families life, (It's actually done less mileage than yours) and they are incredible vehicles, I drove it 400 odd miles, for seven hours, not once did I feel tired. They are such amazing vehicles, extremely relaxing, sturdy, and 'homely'. Even the 2006 model has a tonne of presence. The only real thing that's somewhat unexpected, is they have a tendency to wallow and drift.

    • @BreakdownAutomotive
      @BreakdownAutomotive  6 років тому +1

      They're incredible to take on long trips! I absolutely adore the L322 for everything it is. Personally, I think the 2006-2009 has one of the best styles. There are angles where the 2010-2012 look like a mix of generations whereas I feel 2006-09 look perfectly balanced.

    • @thegothicprince2218
      @thegothicprince2218 6 років тому +1

      Agreed with that! I also love the look of the Supercharged's rear lights. I do like the new Range Rover's, but they're not as menacing, or rather as intimidating as the L322's.

    My 2003 4,4 V8 Vogue has 256'000 Kilometers now and still looks (interior and exterior) and drives like new! Had to replace the front air-suspension, did the timing-chains just for security. Only thing: it leaks always a little bit of oil there and there and the expansion tank of the coolant water exploded once. For me (have also RR and Bentley's) it's the BEST car to travel anytime and anywhere! and i NEVER want a younger one! They lost the character and have become nouveau-riche and i don't want all those electronic-screens everywhere!

    Just as a small added note I bought my first at 22 years of age 2 door I still have it ...It still runs it still looks good and has gone up in value by a thousand percent SO take all the years
    of running costs I am now 68 years young /old This car has probably not cost me a penny/dollar Well fuel wise it has but if I do the maths even that is probably covered Show me another car
    not in the Land Rover brand that does or has done that over god knows how many years.. I note that a lot of Americans slag the car off but we the Britts still sell loads and loads to America
    why is that ????? Well its because it has style It has a presence that no other car appart from Rolls or Bentley has Well there are a few others but they just get left in the garage to just look at
    and if used on a daily bassis will cost a fortune and we all know which brands they are Italian and German top of the range comes to mind ???????? Aston Martin is another we are proud of
    A D.B. 5 is now worth over a million so if you bought it 50 years ago you are well in pocket and your pension is sorted !!! Is there a Dodge or a Cadilac that will do the same I think not ??

Engines were for the first model the TD6 and the 4.4 V8, then for the first facelift they introduced the 4.2 Supercharged V8 and the 3.6 TDV8 and the last facelift brought the 5.0 V8/ 5.0 Supercharged as well as a 4.4 TDV8.

Unfortunately most Garages say they can fix them yet they can't and say you need a new Computer Modules ect when most of the time it's just a Electrical problem But you have to find the fault!! this will Test how Good you Think you are. I used to have a 2006 Land Rover LR3 V8 SE with the Jaguar 4.4 liter V8, absolutely loved it, leased it for 27 months. Now I just financed a preowned 2015 Land Rover LR2 HSE, it's nice and all, but for a 2015, compared to my 2006 LR3, I want to say the 9 year older LR3 offered a much nicer ride from the adjustable air suspension, had brighter headlights, and having the V8 engine, still got around the same mileage I am currently getting in the LR2 with a 4cyl engine. I really wanted a 2013 Range Rover Sport but decent ones are still a bit pricey right now.

      - I also have an 01 sequoia Sr5 (base) with 201,000k. I do love it, and it’s without a doubt, going to outlast my Range Rover, and Jaguar. It’s practically “maintenance free” and Toyota’s last FOREVER. Great vehicles but, as you know, don’t offer the performance and luxury that a Range Rover does. Clearly you have good taste in cars though:)

    • @AllieGee95
      @AllieGee95 5 років тому +4

      joe sands it doesn’t just come down to being a hard driver or not (mind you I wasn’t all that easy on mine). It’s all about maintenance, maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Did I say maintenance? (Tho you can get a lemon sometimes unfortunately). Mine didn’t get the best care before I got it so it was in the shop often.
      But I’ve got another “stupidly unreliable” car... the RX-8, and the previous owner was CRAZY about his maintenance and I’m pretty on point with it too.. this car has not had any problems in its 15 years yet.
      It comes down to maintenance. stay on top of it, one step ahead of breakdowns and you’ll never have any issues.

    I have spent a lot of time trying to decide between a 2016 td Range Rover or Range Rover sport, vs. a 2015 Lexus lx 570. All of the videos on rovers talk about the unbelievably bad electronics. Car and driver drove a 2016 for a year 40 k mi. Very scary read. The air suspension scares the heck out of me as well. I think I’m leaning towards the lx 570 for quality and reliability versus the range rovers gas mileage.

      I was in a 2006 the other day while at a dealership, and the rear seats felt like they had more legroom. I thought maybe I was going crazy at first 😂, but maybe it actually is. I know they changed the seat designs in the later years, so that might be it.

  • @GreenOval_Adventurers

    The two best Engines for the L322 Range rover are the 3.6 tdv8 and the 4.4 tdv8. The 4.4 tdv8 is just amazing and averages around 30 mpg with 330 bhp and 750 nm Torque suited to an 8 speed box ( the 3.6 tdv8 is quite good as well). the 3.0 td6 where grand but slow and underpowered. The petrols are a waste of time cause they are just not economically enough at 170 dollars a go to fill up. Drove a 4.4 v8 once and literally it was 20 euro to go anywhere. hahaha A complete joke.

    • @BreakdownAutomotive
      @BreakdownAutomotive  5 років тому

      That's great! We don't really have diesel L322 models in the US, so I can't really comment on those.

    • @GreenOval_Adventurers
      @GreenOval_Adventurers 5 років тому

      I understand, We have had loads of Range rovers over the years all different models and years starting years ago with Classics, p38s etc. The diesels are definitely the ones to go for now unless petrol is free. haha

    • @BreakdownAutomotive
      @BreakdownAutomotive  5 років тому +1

      If we have them in the US, I'd take a 4.4 TDV8 in a heartbeat! I've heard amazing things about them, but I've never been able to experience one for myself. Haha I get that. It's definitely much cheaper to fill up with petrol here. My average cost per month (2 full tanks) doesn't equal the 170 figure you mentioned earlier so I wouldn't touch it haha.

    • @GreenOval_Adventurers
      @GreenOval_Adventurers 5 років тому

      Ya the 4.4 tdv8 is something else, Still if you do any amount of driving say 600 miles or so a week your still talking a fuel bill of around 600 euro a month which is around 700 dollars ( id say you would use more) haha Its still expensive even for a diesel.

    • @BreakdownAutomotive
      @BreakdownAutomotive  6 років тому

      Roughly $185/month for full coverage with 50 miles of towing (found that important 😂). I use State Farm, but I'm sure you can find a better deal with another company. I've just not bothered to look. When I first bought it at 20, it was around $200/month but dropped when I turned 22.
