If you've been following my home reno series Making Home then you know I have a small entryway into my house that is not super ideal for storage. I needed an easy storage organization solution for all of my coats and shoes that wouldn't damage my floors or be too permanent if I change the layout of my house in the future, so I headed to IKEA to answer all my DIY hopes! Using IKEA's custom kitchen software I designed my faux built-in IKEA-hack bench and then created a budget-friendly renter-friendly solution to install them using wooden supports and bench top. This bench is going to be such a huge help, especially in the wintertime so that I can keep my entryway free of clutter and I hope it helps you too! Let me know if you'd take on this project and if you have any solutions for the problems I had along the way 👇

You can adjust the strength of the hinges on the hinges themselves… I have the same cabinets
Bumping to the top ^
I hope they see this! 🤞
Kelsey... please look at this!!
Bop to the top 👆
I hope she sees this!! I mean she did ask for advice on them!! haah
Tell me why I was so sad when she primed the top piece, that wood with the white looked soooo good😭
exactly! funnily Ikea has a line of living room furniture in that style. I have the TV stand, and i love the look.
I think she should stain it, that would look really good too🤔😊❤️
I know right. Even a stain would've looked amazing on it
Yeah, the all-white makes it look kinda office-y...
Wood filler does not stain nicely even if its "stainable"
would loved to have been in the Ikea parking lot to see Kelsey reenacting her interactions/process alone
I know its a pandemic and shopping in stores is complicated right now BUT I would LOOOOVEEE to see some sort of guide to buying wood at the hardware store.
I always get so intimidated and confused. Watching the whole process of you doing it would be so helpful!! :)
Second this! I get so confident online then freak when i get there
Aah my people! I would need a knowledgeable person to hold my hand through every step…at-least for several trips!
Her Mom crying about building IKEA furniture. We've all been there.
Just pay IKEA to build it for you. Worth every penny! 😊
😅 my brother had just a side table/night stand bought I was also crying since the steps so long for something so easy.
Belinda L YES
I don’t know about you but the stool I built in 5 steps went together perfectly
I love building IKEA furniture, it's like a big puzzle! I think it's on of the best thinks about buying from IKEA 😅
Becky would have used a live edge wood for the top seat part
😂
Oh... you're going to need some sort of fastening between those boards. Ideally would be some biscuits or dowels, but pocket holes would work. I think you're going to see the wood filler crack quite a bit in the future.
Hoo boy. I was looking for this comment.
You are 100% correct.
This. I was so nervous looking at that
Ah, just put a cushion on it
I was thinking just spring for a custom cut piece of wood. I didn’t think this was the item to save money on.
I was also wondering about using those cabinets to support a person’s weight. They’re not designed for it. I hope there won’t be that many people sitting on the bench. I’m not convinced she saved that much money over a scratch build, particularly if she went with pine and/or MDF.
I’m also worried about the hinges. My understanding is that hinges that support cantilevered weight are a specialty item, specifically designed for the purpose. Over time I think there will just be too much strain on the hinges.
I think a Kallax shelving unit would have worked better than the cabinets, but maybe the measurements didn’t work. She must have wanted closed storage, because otherwise she could have just built a bench with cubbies below.
Becky: Do you need help?
Kelsey: NoOOOoo!! *Nearly breaks her back*
Me all the times.
In my experience a “dry fit” is usually when you fit all the pieces of a project together before gluing it! Just FYI! Great video :)
Ann she might not see this great suggestion because you put it as a reply to another comment. Please repost to the video. So she can see! I hope she will consider your idea 💙
A friend of mine calls a dry fit the time you put things together before the beer gets there! LOL.
Kelsey accumulating injuries for twenty two minutes
Every episode has so many safety problems, it's just a matter of time until one of them gets a serious injury. No eye protection when drilling and sawing, 9:50 long hair hanging down when using the drill, climbing scaffolding without a safety strap, not taking rings and dangling necklaces off. It's honestly giving me anxiety, they do not take any shop safety precautions.
I think a herringbone top would have been so cute if you were going to piece together wood
Bobbie Sindhar I was hoping the wood top would have been stained instead of painted. The finished product did look great tho
@@valerieann2751 I cringed when she painted the top white - a warm wood stain would have been so much better. Also that gap on the right side by the way would drive me nuts. Actually, building your own cabinet would have been better too - I'm really not agreeing with a lot of her choices lately. Personally, I think a split top with piano hinges to pull the top up is easier to load/unload things if she's using this as a front closet.
A
I thought this was going to be a making home episode 😭
Still a good one though
It technically is
So my safety takeaways from this video - wear protective eye wear and ditch the jewelry when doing any sort of construction, including but not limited to assembling Ikea cabinets. Got it!
:D
YES!!!
notice the masks being worn during the cutting part too. The dust can get in your lungs and having splinters inside your breathing apparatus leads to all sorts of health hazards!
We did a version of this. However we used drawers from their entertainment center section which you CAN add feet and you don’t have to worry about hinges because they are drawers. 👍🏼 It took us 1 day total to purchase and assemble.
That's a great idea!
Awesome! I was thinking that drawers would be much better but couldn't find anything at that depth... Do you have a link you could share? Thanks ;)
PrincessJaetara Hi! I believe we used the Besta unit. They are not too deep but they fit our space perfectly. You can also double up on the drawers and it would be tall enough to use as an entry way table w/ storage.
Any video with drawers?
Good to know that expert DIY'ers like the Sorry Girls also struggle with Ikea furniture... 😬
Kelsey, for the wood top, next time, drill pocket holes first. Check out Dani Berger's farmhouse table. She does a step by step on how to create this exact thing.
Yes! This whole video I was thinking she should've done it as a collab with Danie!
And Christina from DIY mommy also used the same method of making built ins with IKEA cabinets. 🤷🏽♀️
Do you know where to find it? I keep trying to look but it looks like her website isnt working

The OCD in me keeps thinking about that vent and how it’s lifting
The OCD in me can't stop staring at the dip in the bottom of the two pieces of wood she glued together for the top! Can't. Look. Away. 😨
She should've removed it before putting the plastic thing... but that irritates me so much too!
For me it's the gap in the kickboards 🙈
same! I had to take a deep breath looking at it. :D
That's not OCD
I have never been this early to a TSG vid! Wild stuff. I love doing built ins with knockdown cabinetry - makes the idea of a custom piece more approachable
i feel so so invested in this home now!!!! i absolutely can’t wait for the next “proper” episode 🥰
Kelsey: “It smells like buttery popcorn!”
Me: concerned
Every Tuesday I legit refresh UA-cam all evening for the uploads. Tuesdays belong to the sorry girls. You killed this hack
what happened to Tuesday and Thursday?? Seriously disappointing.
"On Tuesday's we watch The Sorry Girls" & if you dont, you can't sit with us!
I have those hinges on my kitchen uppers and you can adjust the pressure on them so they're not so violent (I have handle marks in my my ceiling from the install!)
Love this! Would have put drawer unit behind door instead so person isn’t sitting behind door when it opens and gets their knees or toes squashed. 😩
I get what you're saying but then it would've driven me crazy to have the higher end on the right as opposed to the left. Visually I like the way it looks and in addition, it was such a perfect fit for the drawer unit on the left.
I think she should have added a coat cupboard on that side. I mean what else could she put in that corner? And it would be actually useful coat storage
The drawer unit.... too low ! I would love this unit more, being one piece. The drawer unit somehow ruins the flow.
I agree she should’ve done a tall cabinet for coats on the right. She could’ve stacked the cabinet on top of the lower door unit and then would’ve gotten a lot more storage out of it. Also the height would help balance it out against the fireplace. Then she could’ve kept the drawer cabinet on the left or just swapped that out for a hinged door. Keeping it how it is feels awkward because the drawer unit is basically hiding behind the fireplace..
I think she will put coat hangers behind the door and some hanging plants or shelves above the drawers. I hope so.
It was amazing to the point of primer on that beautiful light wood bench.. Why cover pretty wood...
Yes! I was thinking it would be so beautiful with a medium-dark stain.
Agreed! When she primed it I was like noooooo because I definitely thought she was planning to stain it some gorgeous wood tone
at least the plan is to paint it and not leave it stark white, so that's a little better. She would have had to plan it without woodfill though, as others said
I'm very invested in seeing her solution to coat storage. Bring on the making home entry way episode sis 🙌🏼👀❤
These kitchen cabinets are so versatile!! I work for an interior architect and they’re building all sorts of stuff out of these. Love how your project turned out, can’t wait for more making home episodes 😍
Guess I'll be making this for my dining room. It looks amazing. You two give me such courage when I'm afraid to tackle a project.
I'm drafting up plans for a banquette in my dining room and this is so helpful! LOVE that you went with the 2x4 base. Excited to hear if you find a better hinge solution because I'm seriously considering those IKEA cabinets.
i'm literally liking and commenting on all your new videos to increase engagement so your videos get pushed out more because you guys are so underrated!!
Omg!!! It’s been a week of restless searching for a bench long enough, or cute enough for my space, with no luck. If I choose the one long enough, it doesn’t have storage, if I choose the one cute enough, it’s tini tiny!!! Thank youuuuu 😍😍😍
i've watched this 3 times already and I am honestly obsessed with this ikea hack! I work for ikea and I am literally going to show this to the kitchen coworkers when i'm in next it's such a brilliant idea
Best part of the video - adding the pricing for the Band-Aids to the project -- hilarious!!
Who else literally gets SO EXCITED when they post!? I always love your videos! They inspire and motivate me SOOO much with growing my channel! Thank you for making such amazing videos!❤️
Always a good day when there’s a TSG upload! ✨💞
We're about to downsize into an apartment and I was JUST getting ready to look for extra storage options! It's perfect! 👐🏼👐🏼
this turned out SOOO good!! i see a plant going on top of the drawers and some hooks on the opposite side for coats! love that you can just kick your shoes into the first cabinet and tuck them away!
Wow - I love this DIY! This storage bench looks so legit, I can't believe it was an Ikea hack! Great job Kelsey! Love from England x
This turned out SO WELL omg! Also WE LOVE Maggie Rogers playing in the background!! 😍😍
I am always so impressed by how you can take an idea and make it a reality! This looks fantastic, can't wait for the next making home episode to see it fully styled! 😁
“Am I gonna die?” I love that reaction, so precisely to the point.....
I am literally currently working on this for my apartment, but with bookshelves on both ends. What a timely video!!!
"Dry fit" means without glue. You want to make sure you have enough clamps before you actually start the glue up.
I'm totally doing this in our mudroom! Leaves plenty of storage for all weather items for our family! Thanks for sharing!
Been looking forward to a new video all day!
can you do the huge gold/brass french mirror that been everywhere lately but for cheap please?
I think they did for the office? Or I'm misunderstanding your description.
@@Lynsey17 misunderstanding they never have the office one is just modern the french mirror is with vintage frame.
Just an idea: You could buy a simple rectangular mirror and build a wooden frame or buy a simple wood-framed mirror and then to imitate the decorative aspect buy different decorative baseboards. My hardware store has a variety of relatively cheap and easily combinable baseboards with swirls and decorations. Then prime the whole thing (wood glue makes for a very cheap primer, just use a few thin layers) and then spray gold. For a more vintagey effect, you could brunch on a light layer of brown oil paint and wipe most of it away to give that old, antique effect.
That's a great fit and omg it's so satisfying how well it fits!! I would DEFINITELY change the changes to the other ones unless you're ok with risking your floor/safety of people opening it! Can't wait to see how you decorate this! I would definitely do some sort of coat hanging/vertical storage to the right side of the window and maybe art work or shelving on the left side above the drawers to balance it out? Also add some nicee cushions for the settings defs! Super excited for the rest of the series I wish you would upload more often ❤️
I'd totally throw some pillows on the edges of the bench maybe a blankie for show and pop a plant on the drawer side or maybe like a plate that holds keys etc. It turned out so good been wanting to do a similar project in my apartment for the longest time.
Was so happy to see this just after getting off from a long day at work! Perfect way to wind down!
This is a god send because I’ve been searching everywhere for a good diy on this
That exact same thing happened to my dad with his ring catching on a fence. Except, the case was written about in some medical article, because it was the first (or one of the first?) successful reattachment of that kind.
7:25 we did the same thing with our kitchen we didn’t use the feet. We built a 2 x 4 base and didn’t use the kick boards from them either they are shiny so we got white moulding from Home Depot
Le
Cram Cramperella ?
Great job Kelsey! It looks amazing!
This channel brings me so much joy!
Wow! Girl you totally did that!! Looks so professional, and built in! Looove IT!
I think this turned out amazing! I wondered if large drawers might be an option instead of the hinged doors. I know the Besta series has drawer options, but I’m not sure what dimensions they come in. I also would recommend removing the baseboards at the ends so the bench is flush against the wall. This is the perfectionist in me talking - that small gap on the right above the baseboard would drive me nuts.
That said, this is an awesome IKEA hack and it’s giving me some ideas for the future! Great job!
Yay! I live for The Sorry Girl videos, especially making home/loft vibes 😊
You make me feel better about my DIY mistakes. Keeping on trying. Thank you!!
This looks so good what the heck! Also the handle template is GENIUS such a great hack 🤩🤩
Small youtuber here 👋🏼🧡
I think this might be my favourite thing you have made yet!!
I was literally flintching when you picked up those cabinets, I thought it was going to break your back. You guys inspire me... I want to make stuff, I'm too afraid I'd just waste my money trying.
Okay, that handle template is genius! I'm definitely going to use that idea when I'm adding handles to my projects.
YAS! I love that idea, too!
This. I have been looking for a, 'How To' with IKEA cabinets forever. I plan on a window seat in my small kitchen/dining room. Thanks so much for sharing!
ahhhhh this is so good!! can't wait to see it in it's final context in the entry episode!
Fantastic build Kelsy! I admire that you did this and with very little error. Thank you for sharing the whole process as this is real and therefore encouraging to me and many others I'm sure. I watch DIY Huntress and she is brilliant yet makes mistakes sometimes. Congratulations for WHEN you guys get to 2 million subscribers!
Kelsey,
Great work! You're sooo close with this project...replace those hinges gurl, you got this, YAY! 👩🔧
I love this build. I have searched a lot to find a solution for a built-in or semi built-in piece like this. I could never find exactly what I was looking for. I will have to check out Ikeas kitchen build section to design mine. Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m excited to try and make my idea come to life because of this video. Lol. Excited to see what color you end up choosing for that piece. Who am I kidding I’m so excited to just see the whole entry way space done. I always love this channel for awesome ideas at a great price point.
Looks amazing! Can't wait for more episodes!
this could not have come at a better time i was literally looking up diy ikea built ins earlier today....
Brilliant project. I knew from the start of the video though, that the hinge type was wrong. Good on you for pointing it out.
Watching this I’m so stressed about how much weight that bench can actually hold
@Brèagha yesssss so true
Same! Someone is going to sit on that cheap MDF and its gonna fold. Yeah she reinforced the top but didn't brace the middles.
I was thinking the same! She said that these cabinets are not designed for this, and then she proceeds wtih putting that heavy-ass top on it - i get it it should redistribute the weight but the cabinets are now actually holding the top plus a person's weight.
Exactly. They are kitchen cabinets - they aren't intended to have people sitting on them. And if they do break, then you're spending the money to re-install something that is designed for sitting. Better to build it out materials that are intended for the purpose you need.
@@SorrensSorrow should've spaced it between with some wooden columns
It's looking so good Kels!!
love this series so much
I'm excited for the entryway video!
I’m so excited for the new episodes coming out 🤩
I really enjoyed your content you have given me so many ideas to improve my little tiny home still in working progress but enjoying the adventure of it please keep up the wonderful work you and Becky do
Brilliant hack! I've never thought of using kitchen cabinets like this. The handles are gorgeous, I'd have picked the same. Good luck with the rest of the entryway, I'm looking forward to the video.
Blessed to be watching this on a beautiful day!
Perfect timing! I'm buying a house and was just wondering how to diy a window seat with storage! Also I'm in serious lust over the vintage tile in the entry! 😍
Brilliant work! You'll love that unit for years.
kels, 1) it looks dope and you did a good job, 2) I think it would benefit from some trim pieces and caulk to fill the gaps along the wall on the left and right sides, to give that proper “built-in” look. 3) Those hinges are usually adjustable, I would look into it or otherwise honestly return them 🤷🏻♀️ and 4) I’m not totally convinced about the joinery on those boards, I think you might see the wood filler cracking. For the future I think you should rip cut the rounded edges off with circular saw and a straight edge, and then pocket hole together the boards :)
Great video as always though. House is coming together nicely!!
I was just saying I wish there was a new sorry girls video!
Lee Valley is INCREDIBLE! I grew up with their catalog. They carry so much interesting home/garden/hardware stuff. It's the best place to go Christmas shopping!
Girl you DID do that!! It looks stunning!!
return the hinges .. ikea has a good return policy lol
Yup, I've done that before! 🤣
I really liked the editing of this video (doing voice over over footage rather than just explaining to a camera).
Glad you went with those handles, much better than the other ones! This is just Beautiful!!!!
Amazing Job, Kelsey & Ally!
i LOVE this series!!!
'Am I gonna die??' 😂😂 literally me every time after I injure myself working on DIYs
Heck yes! Been waiting all day 😄
I love the outfits chosen for putting together ikea furniture! (I guess also for making a video)
Woah you have to return those hinges 😱💰 what you need is a 90 degree tip out hinge, we used them in our van build! 🚐
Clicked on the notification so quickly, i cannot😂 💛
I have been waiting all day for this video
Love all the shoes you wore in this video!
WOW this bench is BEAUTIFUL!
I very much enjoyed this video. You are so talented and resourceful. Can’t wait to see more of your Making Home series!
That is a great idea. I like that you did the changes you made. And you are spot on about being renter friendly. Yes let's do more.
Girlllll that looks like it was custom made for that space! Gorgeous and genius to use the upper cabinets for this purpose (even with the vicious hinges haha). Can't wait for the next Making Home :D
What a great job!!! ** looking round my house thinking where can I recreate even though I clearly don’t need this**
