      I was thinking just spring for a custom cut piece of wood. I didn’t think this was the item to save money on.
      I was also wondering about using those cabinets to support a person’s weight. They’re not designed for it. I hope there won’t be that many people sitting on the bench. I’m not convinced she saved that much money over a scratch build, particularly if she went with pine and/or MDF.
      I’m also worried about the hinges. My understanding is that hinges that support cantilevered weight are a specialty item, specifically designed for the purpose. Over time I think there will just be too much strain on the hinges.
      I think a Kallax shelving unit would have worked better than the cabinets, but maybe the measurements didn’t work. She must have wanted closed storage, because otherwise she could have just built a bench with cubbies below.

      @@valerieann2751 I cringed when she painted the top white - a warm wood stain would have been so much better. Also that gap on the right side by the way would drive me nuts. Actually, building your own cabinet would have been better too - I'm really not agreeing with a lot of her choices lately. Personally, I think a split top with piano hinges to pull the top up is easier to load/unload things if she's using this as a front closet.

No eye protection when drilling and sawing, 9:50 long hair hanging down when using the drill, climbing scaffolding without a safety strap, not taking rings and dangling necklaces off. It's honestly giving me anxiety, they do not take any shop safety precautions.

      Just an idea: You could buy a simple rectangular mirror and build a wooden frame or buy a simple wood-framed mirror and then to imitate the decorative aspect buy different decorative baseboards. My hardware store has a variety of relatively cheap and easily combinable baseboards with swirls and decorations. Then prime the whole thing (wood glue makes for a very cheap primer, just use a few thin layers) and then spray gold. For a more vintagey effect, you could brunch on a light layer of brown oil paint and wipe most of it away to give that old, antique effect.

    I think this turned out amazing! I wondered if large drawers might be an option instead of the hinged doors. I know the Besta series has drawer options, but I’m not sure what dimensions they come in. I also would recommend removing the baseboards at the ends so the bench is flush against the wall. This is the perfectionist in me talking - that small gap on the right above the baseboard would drive me nuts.
    That said, this is an awesome IKEA hack and it’s giving me some ideas for the future! Great job!

    • @Hannahd1717
      @Hannahd1717 4 роки тому +3

      I agree she should’ve done a tall cabinet for coats on the right. She could’ve stacked the cabinet on top of the lower door unit and then would’ve gotten a lot more storage out of it. Also the height would help balance it out against the fireplace. Then she could’ve kept the drawer cabinet on the left or just swapped that out for a hinged door. Keeping it how it is feels awkward because the drawer unit is basically hiding behind the fireplace..

    kels, 1) it looks dope and you did a good job, 2) I think it would benefit from some trim pieces and caulk to fill the gaps along the wall on the left and right sides, to give that proper “built-in” look. 3) Those hinges are usually adjustable, I would look into it or otherwise honestly return them 🤷🏻‍♀️ and 4) I’m not totally convinced about the joinery on those boards, I think you might see the wood filler cracking. For the future I think you should rip cut the rounded edges off with circular saw and a straight edge, and then pocket hole together the boards :)
    Great video as always though. House is coming together nicely!!

    Brilliant hack! I've never thought of using kitchen cabinets like this. The handles are gorgeous, I'd have picked the same. Good luck with the rest of the entryway, I'm looking forward to the video.

    @TheSorryGirls I actually used those exact cabinets to make a similar looking piece, I adjusted the hinges so that they weren't as "aggressive" per instructions. But I also screwed a screw into the mechanism so that the hinges wouldn't slam into the floor.

    Since you said you this built-in was your solution to a hall closet, you should put some coat hooks to the right of the window! It will give you somewhere to hang coats and will offset the drawers on the left so the setup doesn't look as asymmetrical! I absolutely love the way you executed this Kelsey, you guys are the best! 🤩

    This looks lovely! I've been happily surprised by the usefulness of those sturdy upper cabinet thingies for other purposes. My dad gave me an extra long one from his old office and we just put it on its side and use it as our linens storage, since our house has little closet space. It fits milk crates perfectly so we slid 3 of them in to use as shelves for the linens. My free reuse for an upper cabinet!
    I'm sure there must be more of them available for free/cheap from businesses that are moving.

    • @miraxterrik
      @miraxterrik 4 роки тому +1

      I was thinking the same! She said that these cabinets are not designed for this, and then she proceeds wtih putting that heavy-ass top on it - i get it it should redistribute the weight but the cabinets are now actually holding the top plus a person's weight.

    • @rebeccathomasanderson8677
      @rebeccathomasanderson8677 4 роки тому +4

      Exactly. They are kitchen cabinets - they aren't intended to have people sitting on them. And if they do break, then you're spending the money to re-install something that is designed for sitting. Better to build it out materials that are intended for the purpose you need.

  • @MichibiSama
    @MichibiSama 4 роки тому

    My first thought to solve the hinge problem was to attach magnet strips at the top of each cabinet for it to have a closing point, but perhaps they'd weaken with time. This turned out fantastic, definitely come sweet inspo for the future!

    • @whatjustinawhat

      Could probably use quarter round or something and just attach it to the seat so that when it’s placed they just cover the gabs and make it look connected to the walls. I think that could probably work, yeah?

  • @princessatheart88

    You can totally make this a window seat! Add a long cushion the length of the whole piece (minus the file cabinet area), add some accent pillows, and bam! Reading area with storage!

  • @DixieGirl9876

    Looks great! I like to cabinet hack too. I have two bathroom vanity cabinets that I turned into an island, for my craftroom and kitchen wall cabinets I mounted one on top of the other and made a free standing toiletry cabinet for the guess bath. I did something similar to yours in my eldest daughters room years ago with two clothes cabinets on each end with a coffee table inbetween as a window seat with baskets underneath. A biscuit joiner would work great for joining your set top together. I've lost count how many times I've borrowed a tape measure in a store. haha

    The top would have looked great with a light stain. Wood filler definitely doesn't stain well at all though.
    Future tip for anyone. When my husband and I did something similar for our dresser drawer faces. We very carefuly pre-drilled holes in the side of each piece of wood then hammered little pieces of dowel rods to hold the wood together and then used TONS of wood glue with super tight clamps. We also sanded the edge of each piece before glueing to make sure it was extra straight and would fit together "seamlessly". We didn't have to use barely any wood filler and were able to stain. 😊
    Maybe paint the top black to match the seats in the kitchen and give more contrast! ❤ still looks great though!

    I've seen similar things on Pinterest using an Ikea entertainment stand and two bookshelves from the same range. That was less ~custom~ and about $200-$300 more than yours! I'm so glad you did this DIY as I was planning on following the more expensive Pinterest route, I'll have to check out the kitchen cabinet builder.

    You could use the soft-open tailgate strut for any truck. It’s called a “damping strut.” It prevents it from dropping open while still making it easy to close. It cost around $35 and it’s not too big
