Drawn and Quarter-Zipped: The Death of Sports Fashion, with Wesley Morris | PTFO

- The four NBA coaches who made the Conference Finals this season all have something in common: a pullover. Because unlike Pat Riley in Armani, or even Larry Brown in overalls (yes, overalls), modern basketball authority rejects individual style in favor of sideline uniformity. So we summon New York Times critic-at-large Wesley Morris (and his two Pulitzer Prizes) to help us explain how we got here. What we’ve really lost, amid this pandemic of athleisure. And why women’s college basketball has the heroes we desperately need. Also: mutating into a muppet; Don Zimmer vs. Pedro Martinez; Hubie Brown as Philippe Petit; and the most delicious glass bowl of chocolate pudding you could ever hope to taste.

No he is not lmfao. This man is weird
Is he wearing a burger king shirt?
he's heading to his shift after the show
Whopper whopper whopper
The balls it takes to criticize someone's fashion choices dressed like a whopper.
This is the most important issue facing our country and both political parties are silent!!
We live in the North Korea of nba fashion
the genius in this is that they breakdown and explain that "comfort" is a mental game, as are all things in sports and the world. the baseball players in the 80s wore tight clothes and were "comfortable" , I mean you can't really dispute what they are saying.Would that have happened to Don Zimmer if he was dressed in a fedora and suit, I think we all know the answer.
I liked the more relaxed look by the coaches
And I don't watch NBA games to see a runway fashion show of head coaches. Plus, I recall the NBA in the 90s when the Iron Fist of David Stern didn't like injured players sitting on the bench in street wear (probably because our boy Davy thought they looked like "thugs") so he implemented a dress code requiring players to wear boring gray suits like all the coaches. Now we have players essentially cat-walking into arenas with their freshest, stylist-selected drip and Wesley doesn't like that either because he thinks NBA players let their girlfriends or wives dress them (as he wears a rugby shirt Charlie Brown or Fat Albert would have second thoughts about rocking). Huh?!?
@@qaspersalt sometimes I wonder, even if someone is trying to be as clear as possible, why people refuse to grasp/comprehend certain things. First Pablo said I am in a cardigan and a pair of shorts, and that he's not coming from this from a point of being "better" it's just something he feels strongly about. NBA players are getting their stylist to put together expensive outfits for them, do you think that's what Iverson was doing? I think they are identfying two things from Covid, people want to be more comfortable and are lazier, and people are unimaginative/everyones doing the same thing. Take something you MAY care about NBA uniforms look at the Pistons logo from the 90's a flaming horse with fire coming out the word "Pistons" compared to what you see today. The San Antonio All-star jerseys, it's a sign of the times.
Never disagreed with Pablo more lol. Love this new attire for them, it is much more comfortable for them and allows for focus on that
Is it possible that after the pandemic, Nike started enforcing terms of its contract with the NBA like they do with the NFL and make coaching staffs wear the quarter zips and golf shirts? Just asking.
big talk from the guy who looks like a burger king employee
Now you have Wesley on? Pablo, how are you down with all the coolest people?
27:40 cannot believe pablo didn't bring up sam hinkie wearing the same suit talking about "choice fatigue"
Material girls living in a material world
golf is a sport like StarCraft is a sport
It's wild that Pablo Torre fans are not hip to nuance...i don't need suits, but why does everyone on the bench need to rock the same thing??🤷🏾♂️
This episode is a phobe.
Easy solution! Custom print Aloha shirts ala the Maui Classic. Formal and comfortable, a high end shirt costs $200.
Pablo been on a run lately
Yall really got a dude in a Burger King uniform complaining about coaching attire? “You’re out of uniform” head ass 😂
This dude is hilarious.
Welcome to european football. You guys we are like 10 years behind.
How yall not show Sydney Carter?
Poor pullover Doc looks so defeated by life... 😔
fuck wearing suits!
Rich people spending 100 dollars on tshirts to try and blend in with us is aggravating.
The well-dressed South American dictators who ordered death squads into action in the 80s turned me off to dress codes forever. Seriously. Sartorial expertise and access don't equal moral superiority or righteousness of purpose. Allen Iverson was an adult when the dress code was imposed on nba players.
Yeah, but Pep Guardiola's fits tho.
they make this point that dressing up represents power and hierachy, they used the Pat Riley example, and what they are saying is we understand all that but do you have to dress this bad! your point is much more serious and correct.
I can't listen to this one. The only good thing that came out of the pandemic was the end of stupid, classist, BS dress codes. It was the one good thing. I already worked from home starting in 2016 and they're trying to take that away from the entire workforce. Oh, my god, I hate this premise.
an inflexible dress code for non-public facing staff is a huge red flag, it's right up there with management saying "we're a family"
They're on your side. The side of the workers.
Deep down you know the bosses are the bad guys
How is the guy in the 7-11 shirt gonna critique fashion?? Bro you look like your late for your shift at taco bell..😂
#ReparationsNow.. RIGHT HOW! ✊🏽
Lotta folks big mad in here 🤣 Great episode! Look at all this interaction, got the algorithms lovin ya.
Wearing a full suit while coaching has always been weird. It's beyond "look at me Louie" behavior.
Wesley looks like AI
Im poor. Its always been like this. You not so poors are being affected now. Wake up and unite.
Not every song on an album can be a banger
You must do a full show on Jerry Stackhouse while he was the coach at Vanderbilt. He was always perfection. We had a group text just for his clothing and shoes.
Also, don't need suits. Not even a fan of them in most cases (Doc & Jack Del Rio's were alright, but Pat Riley looked way too much like a coked up '80s sleazebag grifter). But more time/thought/effort/etc/so forth than me, an irreparably damaged soul who struggles to average 20-30% of a regular person's energy levels any given day, doesn't seem unreasonable?
Tbr it felt a little racist to compare Snitker to John Rocker. Just because he's white and in a Braves jersey? Just bizarre
Wtf? 😂 why do coaches of sports teams need to wear suits? Belichick wore a hoodie. If you know a coach, that's just time they could spend watching film.
Wesley Morris lost all credibility when he said "dress shoes are comfortable" try a hoka bondi or a brooks glycerin or an asics nimbus. get the hell out of here!!!
Fantastic podcast. Shopping for work clothes after college graduation right now and definitely needed to hear this. Time to put effort into dressing well again!
More Wesley please!
This also has been bothering me. Bring back the Suits
suits are stupid, can't change my mind
Climate town. Merch is really bad.
Its between this one and the video game demo for worst episode
Cool take
They cant all be bangers...lol
If you have time to give any fucks about what people are or aren’t wearing… 🤨.
Thank goodness!! Hate all those suits. Everyone is dress the same looks much better
Pablo, you are on some bullshit with these episodes lately.
You're a clown 🤡 you should ask for your money back
lots of duds, but that means he's due for a banger
These fellas hate sports.
You clearly weren’t listening beyond those prejudices in your head 🤣🗑️
Pablo you have to get Wesley as a permanent co-host
Entertaining for sure but frivolous and Uber-critical beyond comprehension…
