I’ve watched this episode so many times since it came out and I still love it but I just realized, if Maui is Moana’s father and Moana is 16, but Maui was still serving his 1000 year exile, how did he leave the island to get it on with Sena(Moana’s mother)

Sena may have traveled to Maui's island and had a relationship with him, but couldn't get him out of exile because she wasn't the "chosen one", therefore leaving and meeting the chief on Moana's island. To explain the pig, he would be Moana's older brother and left with Sena during her departure.
I was just about to comment this. I doubt the mom would have left because I think in the movie, they say they all have remained on the island for a long time and it was made a rule before Moana was born that people couldn't leave. So the mom being able to sneak away for the time it would take to fall in love with Maui and get pregnant and make it back to her home island would be too long of a disappearance and the islanders would winder where she went for all that time.

Here's an alternate idea: what if Moana's demigod status was cause of Tui and not Maui? Remember, Tala is Tui's mother, and we just established that Tala is the goddess of the stars, so it's likely hereditary, but the twist is that Teui doesn't know it, or at least is trying to ignore it for as long as he's trying to protect Moana from the sea (see what I did there)😅

Very nice, I know next to nothing about Polynesian mythologies so I would believe it if you told me there's a story of a human, pig and rooster being the children of an eel and a hummingbird. But apart from Maui being on an island for forever while the mother was supposedly human everything seems seamless :) And yes, Disney does put a lot of effort into their animations!

Well all the people that ship moana and maui now must feel weird
there's a major hole in mat's theory, what with Maui being stranded on an island alone for a thousand years. Moana was conceived, born, and grew up to about 16(according to tv tropes) before they met, so at most the mating ritual that led to Moana existing happened 17 years before they met. there is a pretty big number difference between 17 and 1000. there is still the possibility of Maui being Moana's grandpa though, so the shippers should still feel weird.

no, the chief would be her father, Tala her grandmother on her father's side, and if you want Maui to be related to Moana, he can be her grandfather on her mother's side. or possibly an uncle. the myths involving Sina apparently can't agree on whether they were married or siblings. I'm just glad they don't claim both at the same time.

Dear matpat,
I was glad that you attempted to turn a new leaf and put a positive spin on a recent Disney favorite of mine. However, your theory here doesn't hold up. In order for Moana to of been conceived both her mortal mom and Maui would have had to meet. The only means possible are that Maui visited their island before his isolation, or her mother, Hina, traveled off the island. Here is how both are not possible.
1) As grandma Tala said in the tale of stealing the heart, "...the heart lost to the sea, where even now 1000 years later, Teka and the demons of the deep still hunt for the heart". That means Maui stole the heart centuries before Cina/Hina was even born, making it impossible for him to have visited her, much less have a child with.
2) This one is not impossible, just extremely unlikely. It could have been possible for Cina/Hina to have made the voyage before Moana. It could have been an secret of Cina/Hina's, and that may have been why she was willing to help out Moana, allowing her to chase after the legends and stories of her grandmother. However, this is still unlikely. As stated, her father attempted to go beyond the reef and lost a friend in doing so. This story was told, but not the secret successful voyage. Additionally, it was established with the rock sculpture on top of the island that no one has left the island for a long time. Again, this secret voyage could have happened, but if she made the trip to find Maui without the heart, why wouldn't he have left the island? Especially with his new love? It just doesn't add up that Cina/Hina has ever met Maui.
Sooo... how did Moana survive all those normally fatal experiences? Well, you said it yourself, she's a god or possibly a demigod. What made me so upset was that you were so close to my theory. It was when you mentioned Pele, the fire goddess.
I have read a great deal of great mythology, and have been interested in Norse, but Hawaiian and other Pacific mythologies only began to interest me before Moana came out. I've done some thinking and now believe that Moana is the daughter of Namakaokai, the Hawaiian goddess of the sea.
I believe that it could be possible that Moana is on such good terms with the sea because she is either her daughter, or a gift. When her father attempted his voyage he lost his dear friend. Saddened by her malevolence, Namakaokai attempts to make wrongs right by gifting Tui a daughter for the loss of his dear friend by causing his love to fall pregnant or fall in love with him to have the child, hopefully bringing joy back into his life. This works, but he still fears the ocean and doesn't forgive it. However, his daughter, Namakaokai's gift/ possible daughter is still attracted to the sea and wants to be with it.
I don't have much to support this with concrete facts, and I have not read any legends like this, but I feel like there are less holes in this theory. I would love to hear your opinions on this and would greatly appreciate a response. Signing out, fellow theorist.

Well... So, in one instance, a goddess would be a female daughter of a titan. The same for a god, which is the male version of a goddess. But when you use the word, god or gods, it can either mean a male god, or it can mean every single god, Boy or girl.

I’ve got another theory to how Moana became a semi god.
When Maui is telling the story of becoming a demigod it was a story of him being rejected by humans and adopted by the gods. Moana says maybe the ocean chose to save him because he was worthy.
When moana saved the turtle she was proved worthy to become the demi god to save them.
Also did he know for sure he was rejected by his parents? He may have run off like moana and the ocean saved him from drowning by accident.
He does have the tattoo on him that shoes his parents casting him out.
Actually, that may be true. In Māori mythology, Māui was born premature, and his mother assumed he was dead. So, his mother cut off her hair, wrapped him in it, and cast him out to the sea.

I think this theory could work!! The evidence that Matt shared here is great, and I have noticed that both Maui and Moana share a few genetic traits as well. BUT -- I've recently rewatched the movie and I started thinking about this thepry as I was watching, up until the scene where it showed the stones on the mountain of Motunui, which represents all of the people who took on the role of cheif after Maui caused the oceans to become too ruthless to voyage- in multiple scenes you can see the several generations (I counted over 10 for sure) that were there after Maui took the heart- so either Moana, Pua and their mother are a thousand years old and don't look the part (which seems unlikely since nobody else acknowledges it) or Maui would have had to be on the Motunui Island and NOT stranded on his own island after he took the heart in order for this theory to make sense. The theory of Maui and Moana being related is literally one of my faves, but I think I accidentally debunked it just bc I rewatched Moana as a comfort film lmfao, anyone got any other ideas of how they could be related?
I also wanna add that it also makes sense for Moana and Maui to be related bc in the film you actively see her having a much closer, father/daughter-like relationship with Maui more than she does with Tui, her supposed father! It would make sense for Tui to be loving, yet distant with Moana in many ways throughout the film.

this actually makes a lot of sense, watching the movie I questioned why Disney didn't go down the old prince and princess route. having Moana instead find her real father and form a bond with him makes sense.
