Since the 'krabby patty' is only in a tv-show it's hard to know what it should taste like. He can try to make the recipe as he thinks it is to see if it tastes good tho.
Honestly, I like both of Matt Patt's explanations for the secret formula. After all, none of the "secret ingredients" he proposes are that extraordinary so I think they both might be at least partially correct. Cool theories! And yes, now I want to see a Crabby Patty tried and made. Also, I hadn't previously realized Plankton and Krabs were once business partners- no wonder Plankton feels so entitled to the recipe!

7:50 he never necessarily says seven "jars"/bottles, but he says ingredients. 2 of those jars look to be identical to each other, therefore you can make the assumption that there was just a larger quantity of that single ingredient stocked
I'm watching this for the first time too and even I caught that lol. The cartoon had two of the same jar, a decent assumption would be that it's the same ingredient.
Decent assumption but it could be another ingredient in the same container. Me Krabs and Plankton didn’t have a lot of money so it could just be a ingredient they couldn’t store in a different container
Out of everything that has been consistent over the course of the entire series, they’ve done a better job at keeping the secret recipe a secret than trying not to make spin offs

Most of the ingredients are already commonly eaten by humans. I don’t see how putting them all together into a burger patty will suddenly make it intolerable to human tastebuds. Sure, it was made for sea fish, but that doesn’t make it the same as dog food.

Come on Matpat, put your theory where your mouth is. We want to see a food theory episode where you guys cook and taste test this theoretical Krabby Patty recipe. Maybe even alter it to be more appealing to human tastes rather than fish taste.
This has all just been leading up to MatPat teaching us how to make the Krabby Patty. First, uncover the secrets. Then spread them for free. We've officially put The Krusty Krab out of business.
Additional to the ingredients secret, the barnacles shavings could 100% be crab barnacles, we don't forget what Mr Krabs said in one of the episodes after tasting one of his own burgers "so that what I taste like"
So heres an idea : i think the patty is made out of crabs because the resturant is and crab trap, And i think plankton is trying to tell what is trying to tell the real recipe , And one more foods have recipes that are leaked out everywhere.
I always thought that since crabs can go on land, Mr. Krabs was the only animal around that could access real beef, and he imported it to make his burgers.
When you make food in bulk, you don't make patties one by one, so it makes sense to make the recipe be based on like 20 patties before they're even formed. Just like the bakery does 50 buns ready to be sold at 8am.
Knowing that the recipe makes a pretty small Batch, makes you wonder if the actual units they guessed are too small, like maybe 4 pounds of bean instead of four cups
@@spencerwarren8302 yeah the batch does seem rather small but we also see the krusty krab keeps a huge heep of the patties in there rather large walk in freezer so they must remake the patties if its such a small amount decently often
Can you make a theory about the possibility of making tea taste like pizza? I know it sounds far fetched, but just a few days ago I was in this tea tasting event, and there was this tea that smells and taste EXACTLY like custard, just the watery version of it. And coffee beans that taste like various fruits like pineapples and oranges is also extremely common nowadays, so is it possible to grow tea that tastes like pizza or other foods?
How on earth did you jump from beverages tasting like custard or fruit, to tasting like pizza of all things? Why would anyone want pizza-flavored tea? I am flabbergasted
Interesting concept. In regards to the flavour in coffee beans It is very dependant on the growing environment of the coffee beans. The level of roast, how fine the grind is, and what method you use to make it. What your hoping for sounds more like molecular gastronomy levels of mixology. It might be a request better suited to the bartenders of UA-cam
Fun fact: in one of the most recent episode with a parade, Plankton gets a small part the Krabby Patty secret formula. The small fragment reconfirmed the ingredient “Salt.” Also, I would enjoy seeing MatPat and Steph making this meal in their kitchen and film it on UA-cam
i like the idea of plankton seeing the chum part of the recipe and wrongly assuming its fish chum which is why the residents of bikini bottom hate it so much. so even if plankton had the entire recipe he would still be making it wrong because he would still be putting fish in it
12:04 the bit of the paper with chum on it ripped off, so krabs just doesn't add it. Meanwhile its all the clues that plankton got therefore all he uses is chum
Hi MatPat, hope you or you team sees this! Could you possibly make a food theory on how to make the perfect popcorn (like you did with tea)? I can never seem to get the butter or seasoning to spread evenly so it would be really cool to see what you find is best for that and other popcorn centered things :)
It all adds up. The recipe makes sense, there's actual proof, and the second movie shows us the patty itself. MatPat, you nailed this theory. Well done.
@Nine and Totes Productions Um no? They're good for fish but only the barnacle shavings are something we wouldn't want to eat, just as a precaution. Literally everything else is people safe and normal food.
Something else worth noting is that both Friend or Foe and Great Patty Caper use the exact same batch size(a metal cauldron). So we can actually compare the two directly. Flour can't be in one of the 4 mystery jars because the amount is simply far too small. Binding agents tend to be the second main ingredient in burger meat behind the actual meat or vegan base. Mr. Krabs uses an entire sack of flour(which for a full cauldron of meat, checks out). My guess is it's not one of the ingredients from the shelf and was counted separate like the onions(which we can confirm as both Onions and Salt are mentioned in Planktons army as being in the recipe) or the meat base. For all we know the Plab Patty cauldron already had the flour and onion.(especially as unlike Chum Burgers, Plab Patties could hold themselves together). Bread crumbs are also a binding agent, but in this case the amount used is far, far smaller. And unlike flour they can also add a small amount of taste. So they fit fine as being in one of the back 2 jars with a thick ground up material. However, this doesn't actually create as big a problem as you'd think. Out of the mystery jars, the one in the back is the barnacle shavings(though I think it's the yellow jar and the larger one is the breadcrumbs) and the one that's bright orange even account for the container is the tumeric. As for our two identical containers? Well whatever is in them is relatively solid, so either an extremely fine powder or a gel. It's also the only one who's color is distinct. It does kind of look like gel, especially the jar shape(and if it is we don't have any leads), but if it IS a powder, well we have one unaccounted for. Salt. Why two jars? Well in Great Patty Caper Mr. Krabs and Spongebob argue over not only which comes first(salt or tumeric), but also whether to use Standard Sea Salt as Krabs remembers or Land Salt as Spongebob remembers. They never get a chance to confirm as Plankton interrupts the first time, they forget to check before sending the formula away the second time, and the episode ends before they can return home so we never see the third time, but what if they were both right? One jar is sea salt, one is land sal
Four other things. 1. A Pinch of Chum isn't in the final Krabby Patty recipe. Plankton took the 'Pinch of Chum' bit and Krabs got the rest of the recipe. And this happened BEFORE the jars spilled. So Krab's recipe is the Plab Patty Recipe, Minus a Pinch of Chum, Plus the stuff on the shelf. 2. We also know what was in the Plab Patty to some degree. (There's a scene in the episode that mentions Seaweed Sauce and Kelp Shavings). So it has those, plus the meat*, plus presumably a binding agent and onions for the reasons mentioned above(Flour would be in too large an amount to be from the shelf and Plab Patties are stable, onions aren't on the shelf). So those two ingredients are probably in there, they just aren't in the shelf scene as they were already in the Plab Patty recipe. 3. The statements the Patty was vegan are post-2009. Early on in the series it's said to be meat a couple times and the Video Games explicitly call it non-vegetarian. So either way works. I guess it's also possible 'Dried Kelp and Seaweed sauce" could be the vegan base for the meat, but it's a little too early in the series and just doesn't seem right. 4. While I'm not 100% on the final jar ingredients (I'm certain Flour isn't there, unsure on Salt), I can confirm "Love" in some form is an extremely consistent mention. 'A Cup of Love' is in the fake recipe from Planktons Army, Spongebob says it's Love in one episode, in 'Not Normal' the patties taste bad when the love is gone, and in the second movie a rioter says it's Love. So you need passion to make it properly. We might be one ingredient short in the end, as it's not fully clear what is and isn't a 'shelf addition' or if those two short jars are one ingredient, or two, or both different types of Salt like hinted in GPC, but between the easy to identify stuff from the shelf(Chilli Peppers and Liquid Smoke, maybe bread crumbs?), the stuff mentioned in Great Patty Caper (Tumeric, Flour, Barnacle Shavings, either Sea or Land Salt), and other hints (Kelp or Seaweed somewhere in there according to Friend or Foe, Chopped Onions according to several episodes, Love/Passion according to many episodes) we've mostly got it. There also may be a specific secret ingredient, several episodes hint at it, most notably the original patty caper.
I like how matpat says that the narrator was incorrect about the six ingredients, even though 2 of the bottles look the exact same, and didn’t mention anything about the bottles themselves.
Well actually, since Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob each had a different final ingredient in The Great Patty Caper (Sea Salt and Tumeric), it could be that one container contains Sea Salt and the other has Tumeric.
@@teamboobooseth1 Yeah, I noticed that too when it was first mentioned. Sure, the bottles look the same, but that doesn't mean they contain the same ingredients. Though Krabs should consider getting himself some better labels.
@@frankielovejoy9928 to be fair the bottles might be of the same brand, just different types of ingredients inside. kind of like how bottles of seasonings from the same brand tend to look the same except with the label
YES THANK YOU!!!! My daughter and I are having a huge argument over this :P -My- take is that there COULD be SIX or there COULD be SEVEN. Because as stated TWO of the jars look identical. Why they look identical is up for theorizing. I just think its astounding how Team Theorist can correlate the exact hex color of lines of text in FNAF to make correlations across multiple games, but there's absolutely zero mention of the fact that two jars that are very obviously identical. They just simply counted each unique jar and presumed that they were all different contents xD
The vegan patty idea reminds me of that one episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer where Buffy worked at a burger place and thought they were using the employees as ingredients, but in the end it turned out the "double meat" pattys were secretly vegan, and the restaurant kept it a secret for the same reason suggested in this video. Also a sweet old lady who ate at the restaurant every day was actually a horrific monster who had been the one eating the employees.
@@TheAdvertisement according to Google, that Buffy episode aired on the 29th of January 2002, while SpongeBob's first episode aired on the 1st of May 1999. So if they were inspired by the Buffy episode it couldn't have been from the very start. Could have inspired them later on though.
Also the episode of Psych where the opposite happened: plant-based burgers turning out to be made of real meat. And the title was “Meat is Murder… But Murder is Also Murder.”
I usually hate Krabby Patty theories, but this one is actually really good and makes sense. Bravo Matpat. The only thing I’m a bit skeptical on is the real reason mr Krabs hides the formula. I’m pretty sure it’s because he wants to be the only one making good fast food, as that means more money
it's actually great to debunk the notion that Krabby Patty is meat based. This makes great sense and I would love to see The Food Theorists create such patty c:
@@inspectorjavert9868 if the krabby Patty isn't meat then could the opposite mean why the chum bucket fails? Could it be that plankton is using the wrong form of chum?

@@leion247 Close, but all they do there is try different stack orders. I mean use patty recipies combined with the winning stack order to determine the definitive best "Krabby Patty"
You missed one ingredient. It has been confirmed by multiple sources that Mr Krabs has code-named one of the ingredients to the Krabby Patty "Poseidon's powder". We see what is most likely this ingredient contained in a bottle marked with an X in the episode Patty caper. I personally think that this ingredient is cocaine. That would explain why Krabby Patties are so incredibly addictive and why Mr Krabs is so protective over the recipe, also, Poseidon's powder is a street name for the aforementioned drug.
It depends on if you see the comics as canon. The Poseidon powder was a mistake on the Wikipedia page that caused everyone to speculate that there was cocaine in the formula, and the comics decided to add it as a reference to that famous mistake that got everyone talking. For me, I wouldn’t really consider it’s validity, but then again, the comics do go into further detail about Mrs. Puff and her psychosis, which I would consider canon.
Well, it wouldn't be out of the question since you know, coke is nicknamed as such for a reason. So it is definitely something that can be used as an ingredient.
I would like to say that “Pinch of Chum” is only seen when Plankton made up stuff in that episode. For all we know that could have been Plankton trying to make Krabs look bad.
@@turnipcrazy but they’re still video games though, so it’d make more sense to put it on Game Theory instead of making a Film Theory about a video game
It’s also worth noting that according to the 2006 game Creature From The Krusty Krab, one of the side effects of eating Krabby Patties is that it causes weird and abnormal dreams, as explained in the final level by the Patty Doctor. And during the ending, Spongebob (who has been making patties for years) decides not to give the Patty to Gary before bedtime because it might “give him nightmares” So maybe there’s another ingredient that makes the consumer of the patties have those kinds of dreams? Possibly originating from the original Plab Patty?
Oddly enough it might be from the burger itself. Several foods that have been noted to cause "nightmares or vivid dreams" include cheese, pickles, and spicy food (the chili pepper). Looking over the video again, the 4 cups, the teaspoon, and the chopped onion was clearly mentioned, but there was that 2 tablespoon that was visible at the bottom that was never covered. 5:28 shows it clearly.
@@Ragetiger1 My first thought was cheese... also quite funny to learn about those other foods that can cause nightmares, since I have them all the time and have for as long as I can remember, with or without those foods, but those 3 things are some of my favourite ingredients 🤣... Kinda nice to not have to worry about avoiding them when I love them, because I'll have nightmares regardless of what I've eaten 🤷🏼♀️
I think you are onto something. And i think the cause of those abnormal dreams is the first bottle of the 6 ingredients in the Friend or foe episode. Matpat says its liquid smoke but the bottle is filled with clear liquid and a picture of fire. When you google liquid smoke most of the products have dark brown color. This is not a liquid smoke its literately Fire water, its a slang word for high alcohol content beverages in USA and Eastern Europe. Those fish are alcoholics with a constant need for a high-proof patties.
As much as I wanna believe this to be true, in the episode 'Spongicus', Plankton mentions that his chum contains whale blubber and seahorse snout. Then again, maybe Plankton interpreted 'Chum' as in the meat kind, while the correct one was the plant-based one.
Also, the fact that the chum part of the recipe was actually the only part of the old recipe that was literally removed, so I'm not so inclined to believe it's in there at all actually
Some things Matpat forgot to mention. In the Episode where Plankton brings his entire family to steal the formula, we do have confirmation that 1 Chopped Onion is in there. Because Planton reads through the book with the recipe and says 1 Chopped Onion. While yes the recipe had been tampered with to throw off plankton, we do know some of the actual Ingredients are in there since it does state a Cup of Love is needed. Something as basic as chopped onion may be one of the few unedited ingredients as to not alarm plankton that it was fake. Another episode where Squidwards rich rival comes to the Krusty Krab and he makes SpongeBob forget anything unrelated to find dining, SpongeBob does state that the food is "Smothered in a rich Red Algae" meaning thay not only is Matpat right that they eat it, but since most of the money went to the decorations, the food probably had to use what was on hand, meaning they more than likely already had the Red Algae on hand for some reason related to the food. I would think it being part of their main food supply is the apex of why they'd have it.
We actually also know a bit about how plankton makes his food as well. In an episode where plankton turns the chum bucket to a colosseum, he sells chum sticks which he expresses are made of jellyfish squeezing, whale blubber, seahorse snout, and anchor rust. There's also an episode where he uses chum to escape jail where he makes it in a toilet bowl. I forgot all the ingredients in that one but two of them include a sock and a recently used tissue if I remember correctly.
Amazing episode as always Matt Patt, now we just need an episode of you testing different amount of the ingredients that don't have measurements for, and serve your perfected Krabby Patties to unsuspecting test subjects (Like how you used Steph for the sawdust cookies)
In the episode Friend or Foe, those ingredients fell off into the Plab Patty. And Karen can actually show those flashbacks. Why doesn't Plankton ask Karen to show it to him again since that's clearly the secret ingredients?
Somebody should actually used this recipe and make it! Curious how it taste Also when you think about plankton could have a huge untapped market with sharks
To be honest, I really hope he does actually try it to see how good the Crabby Patty actually is, and if it's actually worth the praise or just overhyped.
We should get a food theory video about making the krabby patty irl, using the ingredients to make the patty itself, and the toppings the normal krabby patty uses (lettuce onion tomato etc.) and then get a taste test and rating. I’d watch that 🙂
He has talked about this on GTLive before - he's said he's always felt like the channels are more like "shows" than channels and that makes more sense to him than the way UA-cam works now 🤔
Actually you missed a very important thing in the show. In one episode of sponge bob, mr krabs trys his burger and says"so thats how i taste" or something related to how he tastes.
Ah yes. Another weekly episode about food starring MatPat, dad jokes, and a special guest star, fictional underwater sea creatures! I love food theory 💛
Okay, real talk: I would actually love to try this recipe out if we can figure out what amounts of the other ingredients we need. (Since fava beans, onion, and calcium are figured out already.) I even posted the ingredient list on a couple of Discords I go to in order to see if there were any good cooks who could figure it out. Actually, a couple of people in the comments here suggested a collab with Binging with Babish to see if he could help. He's already done a few Spongebob vids, but those were using normal burgers. He might be the guy to figure out what amounts of the other ingredients we need. (Also...one of the gibberish ingredients, while we don't see the gibberish word, shows 2 tbsp of something. That could be a hint as well.)
All these years and I assumed the patties were made from sea cows (which are a real animal by the way), though ever since I saw Friend or Foe, I assumed that it was a mixture of different spices, much like the alleged "secret formula" that's used in real life KFC Chicken does (yes, KFC has a secret formula as well, don't let Plankton know about it).
@@leion247 They just used a common burger patty, though. They otherwise assembled the burger to Krusty Krab specs, but it's not really a Krabby Patty. It could be nice to see them test different ways of making the patties, and to revisit making a burger, now using their pieced together secret patty recipe.
8:00 the 6 ingredients, despite there being 7 jars, because two of the jars appear to be identical. And only one of the bottles even appears to be uncapped, which would be the second.
14:24 I only have one thing that might go against this theory. How does this apply to the other animals. We got starfishes, lobsters, snails, squirrels, and lots of different kinds of animals probably had a Krabby patty before. So is the ingredients listed safe for all the animals who had a Krabby patty.
Yeah the definition of fish is really loose I mean MatPat has talked about bees getting classified as fish so it's hard to understand what technically falls into this category
Now Wendy’s is selling the Krabby Patty meal Plankton would probably get his hands on it if he could so he could sell food at the Chum Bucket but the Krusty Krab doesn’t sell chicken nuggets or chicken strips
Man, I love the final conclusion with red algae, but I can't help but notice the weakness in the call to the spongebob lore channel. It seems to me like the reason the narrator said 6 ingredients is because there were 2 of the same jar, so that was just one ingredient in a large quantity. Although it also seems an odd detail to mention the channel if the only use was to say they are wrong and move on. Either way... loved the episode!
It’s probably to demonstrate to people that he’s aware of the bikini bottom mysteries series and that the one about the secret formula is blatantly almost wrong
Glad to see you figured it out! I've always gotten mad when people say, "there's no secret formula", when episodes like Friend or Foe gave clear evidence that there is!
One thing that I think would be really interesting is that in one episode, plankton was trying to alphabetically figure out the recipe, saying he was on "raw sewage" which alphabetically comes BEFORE red algae
Oh yeah forgot about that one. He would still need to figure the rest of the ingredients as well figure out which order they go in. Plus, as some other commentators have pointed, the formula still probably wouldn’t taste as good cause Plankton assumed chum was fish rather than plant matter.
@@kidpixel4818 he actually wouldn't need to figure out the other ingredients! In the episode, he said that he figured out all the other ingredients except for that specific one (which really makes you wonder why he stopped after Raw sewage. After all, he was already on the "R"s)
This is so amazingly well researched dude! Mad props. The only thing I want to say is personally I don't think that Mr. Krabs continued using the pinch chum though. In the episode Krusty Bucket SpongeBob mentions that they added a pinch of chum to it after a customer mentioned the patty tasted even better than usual. My guess is since Plankton got the chum part of the ripped recipe, Mr. Krabs didn't know it was one of their ingredients. Over all I really loved the video though and thank you for this long awaited moment from our childhoods.

E
Pun intended
This is a very consistent theory and we appreciate the goodwill to share it with us

Well actually, since Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob each had a different final ingredient in The Great Patty Caper (Sea Salt and Tumeric), it could be that one container contains Sea Salt and the other has Tumeric.

My daughter and I are having a huge argument over this :P

I just think its astounding how Team Theorist can correlate the exact hex color of lines of text in FNAF to make correlations across multiple games, but there's absolutely zero mention of the fact that two jars that are very obviously identical. They just simply counted each unique jar and presumed that they were all different contents xD
Gotta say, the Food Theory channel may just be my favorite of the bunch. So many great episodes.
I just realized that this episode gave us canon info on MatPat’s lore: he is willing to throw hands with a didjeridoo if need be
The vegan patty idea reminds me of that one episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer where Buffy worked at a burger place and thought they were using the employees as ingredients, but in the end it turned out the "double meat" pattys were secretly vegan, and the restaurant kept it a secret for the same reason suggested in this video.
Also a sweet old lady who ate at the restaurant every day was actually a horrific monster who had been the one eating the employees.
If I remember correctly, Spike loved those burgers
That's awesome, and entirely possible then that the creators of Spongebob were inspired by that!
@@TheAdvertisement according to Google, that Buffy episode aired on the 29th of January 2002, while SpongeBob's first episode aired on the 1st of May 1999.
So if they were inspired by the Buffy episode it couldn't have been from the very start. Could have inspired them later on though.
The patty is most definitely made of whale meat. There's a ton of evidence pointing towards this including that mr. Krab's daughter is a whale.
Also the episode of Psych where the opposite happened: plant-based burgers turning out to be made of real meat. And the title was “Meat is Murder… But Murder is Also Murder.”

Well Babbish said it may be MSG.
Puff and her psychosis, which I would consider canon.
this comment is so funny to me. im not saying its wrong its just funny
Well, it wouldn't be out of the question since you know, coke is nicknamed as such for a reason. So it is definitely something that can be used as an ingredient.
In the old Film Theory, he mentioned that, but it was just a mistake on the wiki.
I would like to say that “Pinch of Chum” is only seen when Plankton made up stuff in that episode. For all we know that could have been Plankton trying to make Krabs look bad.

@@Ragetiger1 Probably the salt, bread crumbs or turmeric

I think you are onto something. And i think the cause of those abnormal dreams is the first bottle of the 6 ingredients in the Friend or foe episode. Matpat says its liquid smoke but the bottle is filled with clear liquid and a picture of fire. When you google liquid smoke most of the products have dark brown color. This is not a liquid smoke its literately Fire water, its a slang word for high alcohol content beverages in USA and Eastern Europe. Those fish are alcoholics with a constant need for a high-proof patties.
Hope we are getting a new food theory episode with Matt actually trying this new theorized recipe.

Finally, the age old question has been answered at last... Now I want to see a real Krabby Patty & know what it tastes like.

Man, I love the final conclusion with red algae, but I can't help but notice the weakness in the call to the spongebob lore channel. It seems to me like the reason the narrator said 6 ingredients is because there were 2 of the same jar, so that was just one ingredient in a large quantity. Over all I really loved the video though and thank you for this long awaited moment from our childhoods.
Plankton looks like he's saying "Gimmie Formula :("
14:00 WOW I did not know Squidward that was that predictable

I was honestly expecting this to be lacking evidence, but this is really well put together.
