Eyelid styes and chalazia are common conditions that affect the eyelids, each with distinct causes and characteristics. A stye, or hordeolum, is a painful, red bump that usually forms near the edge of the eyelid. It results from a bacterial infection, often involving Staphylococcus aureus, which inflames the oil glands at the base of the eyelashes or within the eyelid. Symptoms of a stye include swelling, tenderness, and sometimes discharge. Styes typically resolve on their own within a week, with warm compresses helping to speed up the healing process.
In contrast, a chalazion is a painless, firm bump that develops due to the blockage of a meibomian gland, responsible for producing the oil layer of the tear film. This blockage causes the accumulation of oil and subsequent inflammation. Chalazia are generally larger and firmer than styes and are found further from the edge of the eyelid. While they often resolve without treatment over a few weeks to months, persistent chalazia may require medical intervention.
Treatment for chalazia typically involves conservative measures like applying warm compresses and gently massaging the eyelid to promote drainage. If these measures fail, medical treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), steroid injections or a minor surgical procedure called incision and curettage can be done to drain the chalazion.
Preventing chalazia involves maintaining good eyelid hygiene and addressing underlying conditions that contribute to gland blockage.

Can constant cold showers cause this?
I have had one for about four months now!
Thank you
can you please help direct me to a doctor that might salvage my eyelid? I've had 4 surgeries and kept telling surgeons it felt like ingrowing eyelashes, long story short, my eyelid is disfigured and "warm compress" is not enough and have had chemo shots straight into eyelid, steroid shots, wedge surgeries....but it's like they dont believe me and it's sooo painful
I had to get 3 seperate chalazion related drainage/eye surgeries over the course of 2 years. Coupled with blepharitis, MGD, and poor guidance, it was an extremely difficult time, especially mentally. There were days my right eye was glued completely shut with discharge. My left eye began to experience similar symptoms. Some of the medications throughout this journey also resulted in skin reactions around the eyes. Eventually I found the right regimen and doctor, and after the conditions hadfinally calmed, I also went to get Lipiflow done as well as a blephex treatment before and after the Lipiflow treatment. BEST THING I could've done. Fast forward 3 years, I rarely experience symptoms on a daily basis now and still do the odd warm compress and cotton lid-margin cleaning with mild soap about 2-3 times a week. GRATEFUL.
I had a painful chalazion that developed after a stye. I was miserable for months! My best advice came from watching this channel!
I had my first one in my upper eyelid in January. My optometrist put me on doxycycline for 14 days, told me to use warm compresses and that was it. It was so painful! I contacted my eye surgeon (had ptosis surgery 6 months earlier) and she had me come in. Injections into the chalazion and then removed it. It seemed to have several bumps in it. I instantly felt relief and it took time but healed nicely. She sent me to a dry eye specialist and I do warm eye compresses 2x a day, apply otc eye drops several times a day, use their eye cleaning products, changed makeup products and had my 1st of 4 IPL treatments with expressing the meibomain glands after. Keeping my fingers crossed that I never have any more.
did this cause any eyelid twitching for you?
@@akielasimon9993 I have not experienced any eyelid twitching associated with this... so far
@@akielasimon9993 so far no eye twitching
I had a chalazion a few weeks ago. It developed right when I was about to go on vacation. It was pretty bad so I decided to go see an ophthalmologist and that same day I decided to get that procedure where they make a small incision on the back of the eyelid. Didn’t hurt at all except when they used a needle to numb the area. With warm compressions 3x a day and not stressing out too much it dramatically decreased in size. Now I think I am on week 3 and my eyelid is all back to normal. I think it has been normal for like a few days now!
My daughter was using a lash curler… and twice she developed these. I didn’t know what they were called, but I had her do a warm water compress and rub castor oil on her eyelid. Slowly but surely it resolved!
I often get chalazion because I have rosacea and dermititis. My eye doctor has told me to wash my eyelids with mild baby shampoo. This advice was also given to me by a dermatologist
Using baby shampoo has been a classic recommendation for decades. Only in the last several years have eye doctors started to have concerns that some ingredients may not be good for the glands of the eyelids. It's still not a widespread concern but there are some publications that talk about it.

Doing warm compresses everyday is great for general eye health
Agreed! For most people it is a good practice. I also think saunas or potentially red light is a good practice too.
No, I've never had a chalazion.
But, I am a 60ish, woman, & have very bad dry eye disease.
For me, it's so painful, & burn a lot.
Thank you for breaking down these
issues so we can understand.
Have a good day.
Thank you for watching! What has helped your dry eye the most? I'm curious.
Your Optom might prescribe drops.
I have severe dry eye. Zero tears/zero schrimer. I have shjogrens/scleroderma/OCP. I’m petrified to get a chazalion!!
Thank Allen for sharing this video.
You are very welcome! Thanks for being a member of the channel!
I had one around 5 years ago. Surgery was my option. So far, it has not come back thankfully.
Just curious: did the removal change your prescription? E.g. cylinder/axis/spherical power?
Happy to hear it went well!
@@lekalotte2825 no change in prescription, though it hasn't changed for over 20 years
I just got done taking xdemvy for blepharitis and I've been having this chalazion since October of last year, 2023. I see my specialist next month and hopefully she can do the light therapy. She offered the last option you mentioned in the video and I wasn't too thrilled but I will do that if I have to.
How did Xdemvy go for you? Any issues? I have seen great success with it for a few patients.
I don’t know what it was but I had a small hard bump on my lower lash line, I had just recovered from a stye on my upper eyelid lash line. My Opthamologist put a steroid shot into it and said it would shrink it, also to use warm compress 3x a day. It did go away but now I religiously do a warm compress in the mornings and use a lid wipe morning and night. I went thru a spell in 2022 when I got my first stye ever and as soon as it healed I’d get another one on the opposite eye, always near my lash line. Finally got it cleared up so that’s why I do the warm compress and eyelid wipe, don’t want them coming back. Plus I threw out all my eye makeup, mascara, eyeliner and some eye shadow. I sanitized everything around makeup and still do.
I got a stye that became a chalazon. I did the warm compresses but also used Manuka Honey eye gel and NAC drops. Mine was caused by permanent eye liner. All good, no reoccurring issues
That's fantastic to hear! Yes, Manuka honey shows some great promise in the research! NAC I am still unsure of but I am digging into that too, its just all the research is only published by one source.
Been using a high number of this honey on different things seems to work well when other things don't.
Wow this video comes out the day mine is big and hurting
There’s face astringent for acne, that contains salicylic acid… use that every few hours, it’ll be gone by tomorrow.
My personal challenge with salicyclic acid products is they dry out my oil glands and it often causes my dry eyes and even dry lips to get much worse. But good to know you find success with it. I will ask other docs about their experience with it.
Good timing! Hope it helps!
Thank you very much for this video. Unfortunately many eye doctors here in Germany think that Chalazion is also Hordeolum. They just give you a lot of antibiotics, which does not solve the issue. After 5 months of suffering with 4 chalaza, they finally sent me to another clinic to have them surgically removed.
Oh interesting! I would love to interview eye docs from around the world and get a different perspective of care. I know an eye doctor here in the US who was an MD in China and then moved here - got her PHD and became an optometrist. It is crazy to hear how different eye care is practiced.
It happened to me, I used warm compressions and it really worked
I give my eyelids a good wash every day right after a shower. I try to make sure I'm not rubbing the eyes just a nice light pressure on the upper and lower eye lids. I try to be more diligent with this after watching all of your videos 👍
When I was 7 I had an issue with "dandruf" around my eyelashes. I cannot remember what it was called, but my parents noticed this and took me to an eye doctor [I was friends with his son] and drops fixed the problem.
That's great! I often describe blepharitis to patients as a type of bad dandruff in the eyelashes.
I just got it recently, this video was like it read my mind :o wow
Tnx . But what is the treatment for watery eyes after using many eye drops
What do you recommend for buying comfortable glasses frames for my mother that she can wear every day and at any time?
I had one of those that hung out for years, until it was finally surgically removed.
I feel a little less alone . . . Taking information into account and appreciate subscribers input also.
That makes me happy to hear!
Dear Doc tto foam ( naviblef ) for ocular rosacea dried out my eyelids I m only 35 looks like I m 60 with sunken eyes and dry skin. Any advice on how to keep clean in the long run ? 😢
I've got a hard yellow oil gland on the edge of my eye lid near my nose. Had it for months and it won't dissolve. I've tried heat and squeezing it but it's solidified. How do I get rid of it?
Dr. Allen, I did have something like you showed and I went to my eye doctor and what he did was cut into it and drained it, told me to use hot compresses and an ointment three times a day. Then a year later the same thing happened again but with the opposite eye. Same course of treatment. Now if I feel something coming on, I put hot compresses on my eye like he told me to, and it seems to stay away. Thank you for your video and God Bless you and your family. 🥰👍👍👍👍👍(🌹🐞🦂🌵)
hi! if you don't mind me asking but did it hurt? i might get an incision too and I'm a ball of anxiety right now
@@manuelcardcaptor no. they gave a shot to numb the area before cutting into it.
I have recurring chalazion every year. I noticed that my chalazion always come back around fall and spring time ( I live in Canada ). I am always extra careful around those time in the year. I take Omega 3 capsule everyday , use a warm compress from Bruder every week or so and clean my face regularly. This is my first time that I haven't had a chalazion this year but only time will tell. I did heard about the IPL treatment. I would be interested to do it but it is quite expensive. ( Around 250-350$ per session - and they usually recommend 3-4 session. I would love to have an video in depth about it.
I had two. One was stye under the eyelid. It took about 1.5 weeks back to normal. All I did was doing a warm compress. Second one I think was chalazion, the warm compress didn't work well after one week. I proceeded to use apple cider with the ratio 1:2 apple cider:water. I put on affected eyelid area and the next two weeks, it was gone.
To keep my eyelids clean, I use baby wipes Huggies Sensitive, the green package and I don't have since.
Originally I "thought" I had a Milia in the middle of my upper lash line (round and white-ish). Not above it but in it. Over a years time, while not painful, it kept getting bigger and more noticeable. When I saw my Ophthalmologist for my semi-annual eye exam he said to just leave it alone. Upon seeing my Optometrist for new lenses she said that it was "likely" a Chalazion and she also said to just leave it alone. Fast forward - for several months I was dealing with a beloved pet that had cancer and I finally had to end his suffering. To say that I was grieving and crying constantly is an understatement. However, during this period and while doing my makeup, I noticed that the lump was significantly smaller. Over the next couple of days I could put gentle pressure on it and it would expel some of the contents until it has now resolved itself. My question is this: could the salinity of tears and perhaps the rubbing of the eyes have caused the pore to become unblocked? I'm so glad it's gone but I'm just curious. Thanks!
I had my first one, started out as a sty when I tried using caster oil on my eyelids to help eyelids grow. I was put on 2 rounds of antibiotics that finally cleared the infection but my large bump never went away. After one month the doctor gave me a steroid shot in my eyelid and that seemed to clear it up , but it took about 3 weeks to clear.
Antibiotic and eye drops name?
I got these regularly and they abruptly stopped three years ago when I went 100% low-fat Whole Foods plant-based. Prior, I was eating a high saturated, fat, high animal meat, diet low-carb with intermittent fasting.
Can working to much behind a screen cause it because I got one on my left under eye lid after working overtime?

Hi I wanted to order glasses from EBD and since you made a video about buying from online I wanted to ask you a question. I have -1.25 prescription on both eyes and the lenses option is a 1.5 and a 1.59 index on EBD. It says that the 1.59 index is best for strong prescription and 1.5 for moderate, but the 1.59 index lenses only have UV protection. Do you think if I take 1.59 index lenses be bad for my eyes since I have moderate prescription not strong? The reason I want to get 1.59 index is because of its UV protection coat since the 1.5 don’t have that. I would be very glad if you could answer me. Thank you:)
Dear Doc - have you ever discussed tiny clear blisters on underside of eyelids? Feels like sand in my eyes.

Hello! Have you ever touched on rosacea as your subject and infiltrates in your cornea? Ive been following your channel for years now and don't believe you have? Thank you! 🥰 chalazian's are awful too 😰
Your question is incomprehensible.

Great question! Thank you. here is a video I did on rosacea in general -
ua-cam.com/video/fh1cTw7bA5Q/v-deo.html
Corneal infiltrates is a bit more of an advanced topic that I have not covered in extreme detail on the channel, but oftentimes in the presence of rosacea - or other forms of blepharitis, people can develop a Staph Hypersensitivity also diagnosed as "Marginal Keratitis" - Thankfully this condition can be easily treated with topical antibiotics and steroid combination medications.
Please let me know any other questions you have about the subject.
@@cynthiagonzalez658 I believe you may be mistaken as the question is on the concept of rosacea and infiltrates within the cornea, not the concept of something infiltrating the cornea. An infiltrate is a single or group of inflammatory cells within the cornea. Hope this helps! ✌️
@DoctorEyeHealth Thank you so much for your response! I personally have been dealing with rosascea flair ups over the last 5 years. And was misdiagnosed over 14 years ago when I had my first flair up in my left eye. They gave me wrong prescriptions and now I have a permanent scar on my left cornea 😰 I am legally blind due to that unfortunate circumstance. My right eye had been causing me issues and last year I finally went onto Doxycycline and it cleared it right up! But I've been on steroid drops in the past. Thank you again for the reply!
I believe they're speaking of ocular rosacea, which I also have.

That knocks them down to about 1.5 weeks then it disappears.
Is it possible to get a sunburn on the eye? Because I had this problem a week ago and I had to use a cool compress. Are there any other treatments I could use?
Yes! It is possible to get sunburn on the eye. It’s called photokeratitis. Depending on the severity of course, but usually an eye doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory steroid eye drops and also some antibiotics to help prevent against infection. Otherwise copious amounts of preservative free eye drops. It would be best for you to see a local eye doctor for a diagnosis and recommended treatments.

I have a chalazion, present for over a year and also Sjogren's for last 20+years. It is the small yellow spot inside lower lid, does not hurt and not visible from outside. When spoke to eye doc, told him I use eyelid cleanser and tried heat compress to remove, he shrugged🤷♂️! 🙄....I'm assuming it won't cause any problems? 🤔
There can be other deposits in the eyelids too, for example, I myself have a concretion that has formed - which is a mineral deposit stuck in the tissue. Happy you spoke with your doctor about it but if you are still concerned you can always ask them again or ask for a second opinion.
Are you still taking omega 3's? Any update?
My adult son had surgery this last week to open up a blocked tear duct. It was so inflamed, there was even a white spot under his eye (past his eyelashes) where it looked like a giant pimple was trying to break through.
Oh fun! lol hope the procedure went well for him.

I had 2 cases, my doctor prescribed Tobradex which is Dexamethasone + Tobramycin, well that helped eventually, but I still have noticeable red area on inner tissue of my eyelid on the place where that pimple appeared firstly. I have both rosacea and MGD. I've found that ivermectin cream helps with my sensitivity to the mites. I put a thin film on my face, as close to the eyelid margin as I can without getting it in my eyes. (it stings) I've seen great improvement in my MGD and roseacea with this treatment. I was getting both styes and chalazion, more so since I was diagnosed with MGD in 2022. I haven't had any eye infections in 2024 so far. The combination of the cream and a low carb diet w/ Omega 3 supplementation and eating more omega three foods has reduced inflammation all over my body including my eyes.
Could you please share the dosage of the ivermectin cream and if it has any other ingredients? Do you only put it on face under eyes? Thank you!

My 8 year old granddaughter suffers from chalazions. She had surgery on 1 several years ago and it has reoccured several times. Right now she has 2, one in each upper eyelid. Warm compresses and antibiotics have not helped. Probably facing surgery again.
One thing you should be aware of is that each time a chalazion is cut out like that, the procedure usually causes meibomian glands on both sides of the incision to be permanently scarred and deactivated. If this is done too many times, it can lead to unfixable dry eye, which is miserable. This is what happened to me and now I'm permanently paying the price for it. Consider any other option for your granddaughter if something is available. I know surgery can't be avoided sometimes, but just consider everything else first.
