    Eyelid styes and chalazia are common conditions that affect the eyelids, each with distinct causes and characteristics. A stye, or hordeolum, is a painful, red bump that usually forms near the edge of the eyelid. It results from a bacterial infection, often involving Staphylococcus aureus, which inflames the oil glands at the base of the eyelashes or within the eyelid. Symptoms of a stye include swelling, tenderness, and sometimes discharge. Styes typically resolve on their own within a week, with warm compresses helping to speed up the healing process.
    In contrast, a chalazion is a painless, firm bump that develops due to the blockage of a meibomian gland, responsible for producing the oil layer of the tear film. This blockage causes the accumulation of oil and subsequent inflammation. Chalazia are generally larger and firmer than styes and are found further from the edge of the eyelid. While they often resolve without treatment over a few weeks to months, persistent chalazia may require medical intervention.
    Treatment for chalazia typically involves conservative measures like applying warm compresses and gently massaging the eyelid to promote drainage. If these measures fail, medical treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), steroid injections or a minor surgical procedure called incision and curettage can be done to drain the chalazion.
    Preventing chalazia involves maintaining good eyelid hygiene and addressing underlying conditions that contribute to gland blockage.

      can you please help direct me to a doctor that might salvage my eyelid? I've had 4 surgeries and kept telling surgeons it felt like ingrowing eyelashes, long story short, my eyelid is disfigured and "warm compress" is not enough and have had chemo shots straight into eyelid, steroid shots, wedge surgeries....but it's like they dont believe me and it's sooo painful

  • @Thedude3372

    I had to get 3 seperate chalazion related drainage/eye surgeries over the course of 2 years. Coupled with blepharitis, MGD, and poor guidance, it was an extremely difficult time, especially mentally. There were days my right eye was glued completely shut with discharge. My left eye began to experience similar symptoms. Some of the medications throughout this journey also resulted in skin reactions around the eyes. Eventually I found the right regimen and doctor, and after the conditions hadfinally calmed, I also went to get Lipiflow done as well as a blephex treatment before and after the Lipiflow treatment. BEST THING I could've done. Fast forward 3 years, I rarely experience symptoms on a daily basis now and still do the odd warm compress and cotton lid-margin cleaning with mild soap about 2-3 times a week. GRATEFUL.

    I had my first one in my upper eyelid in January. My optometrist put me on doxycycline for 14 days, told me to use warm compresses and that was it. It was so painful! I contacted my eye surgeon (had ptosis surgery 6 months earlier) and she had me come in. Injections into the chalazion and then removed it. It seemed to have several bumps in it. I instantly felt relief and it took time but healed nicely. She sent me to a dry eye specialist and I do warm eye compresses 2x a day, apply otc eye drops several times a day, use their eye cleaning products, changed makeup products and had my 1st of 4 IPL treatments with expressing the meibomain glands after. Keeping my fingers crossed that I never have any more.

    I had a chalazion a few weeks ago. It developed right when I was about to go on vacation. It was pretty bad so I decided to go see an ophthalmologist and that same day I decided to get that procedure where they make a small incision on the back of the eyelid. Didn’t hurt at all except when they used a needle to numb the area. With warm compressions 3x a day and not stressing out too much it dramatically decreased in size. Now I think I am on week 3 and my eyelid is all back to normal. I think it has been normal for like a few days now!

    I often get chalazion because I have rosacea and dermititis. My eye doctor has told me to wash my eyelids with mild baby shampoo. This advice was also given to me by a dermatologist

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  20 днів тому +3

      Using baby shampoo has been a classic recommendation for decades. Only in the last several years have eye doctors started to have concerns that some ingredients may not be good for the glands of the eyelids. It's still not a widespread concern but there are some publications that talk about it.

    I don’t know what it was but I had a small hard bump on my lower lash line, I had just recovered from a stye on my upper eyelid lash line. My Opthamologist put a steroid shot into it and said it would shrink it, also to use warm compress 3x a day. It did go away but now I religiously do a warm compress in the mornings and use a lid wipe morning and night. I went thru a spell in 2022 when I got my first stye ever and as soon as it healed I’d get another one on the opposite eye, always near my lash line. Finally got it cleared up so that’s why I do the warm compress and eyelid wipe, don’t want them coming back. Plus I threw out all my eye makeup, mascara, eyeliner and some eye shadow. I sanitized everything around makeup and still do.

I put on affected eyelid area and the next two weeks, it was gone.

    Originally I "thought" I had a Milia in the middle of my upper lash line (round and white-ish). Not above it but in it. Over a years time, while not painful, it kept getting bigger and more noticeable. When I saw my Ophthalmologist for my semi-annual eye exam he said to just leave it alone. Upon seeing my Optometrist for new lenses she said that it was "likely" a Chalazion and she also said to just leave it alone. Fast forward - for several months I was dealing with a beloved pet that had cancer and I finally had to end his suffering. To say that I was grieving and crying constantly is an understatement. However, during this period and while doing my makeup, I noticed that the lump was significantly smaller. Over the next couple of days I could put gentle pressure on it and it would expel some of the contents until it has now resolved itself. My question is this: could the salinity of tears and perhaps the rubbing of the eyes have caused the pore to become unblocked? I'm so glad it's gone but I'm just curious. Thanks!

I have -1.25 prescription on both eyes and the lenses option is a 1.5 and a 1.59 index on EBD. It says that the 1.59 index is best for strong prescription and 1.5 for moderate, but the 1.59 index lenses only have UV protection. Do you think if I take 1.59 index lenses be bad for my eyes since I have moderate prescription not strong? The reason I want to get 1.59 index is because of its UV protection coat since the 1.5 don’t have that. I would be very glad if you could answer me. Thank you:)

    I get Chalazions in my left eye frequently. At least one every 3-4 months at this point in life. I can tell when theyre coming and after the first stye all i do when i feel it coming is a HOT wet compress for 8 minutes then pressure 2-3times. That knocks them down to about 1.5 weeks then it disappears.

    • @DoctorEyeHealth
      @DoctorEyeHealth  19 днів тому

      Yes! It is possible to get sunburn on the eye. It’s called photokeratitis. Depending on the severity of course, but usually an eye doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory steroid eye drops and also some antibiotics to help prevent against infection. Otherwise copious amounts of preservative free eye drops. It would be best for you to see a local eye doctor for a diagnosis and recommended treatments.

      There can be other deposits in the eyelids too, for example, I myself have a concretion that has formed - which is a mineral deposit stuck in the tissue. Happy you spoke with your doctor about it but if you are still concerned you can always ask them again or ask for a second opinion.

    I have both rosacea and MGD. I've found that ivermectin cream helps with my sensitivity to the mites. I put a thin film on my face, as close to the eyelid margin as I can without getting it in my eyes. (it stings) I've seen great improvement in my MGD and roseacea with this treatment. I was getting both styes and chalazion, more so since I was diagnosed with MGD in 2022. I haven't had any eye infections in 2024 so far. The combination of the cream and a low carb diet w/ Omega 3 supplementation and eating more omega three foods has reduced inflammation all over my body including my eyes.

    My 8 year old granddaughter suffers from chalazions. She had surgery on 1 several years ago and it has reoccured several times. Right now she has 2, one in each upper eyelid. Warm compresses and antibiotics have not helped. Probably facing surgery again.

    • @johnschmidt8440
      @johnschmidt8440 21 день тому +2

      One thing you should be aware of is that each time a chalazion is cut out like that, the procedure usually causes meibomian glands on both sides of the incision to be permanently scarred and deactivated. If this is done too many times, it can lead to unfixable dry eye, which is miserable. This is what happened to me and now I'm permanently paying the price for it. Consider any other option for your granddaughter if something is available. I know surgery can't be avoided sometimes, but just consider everything else first.

He sent his one and only Son down, Jesus Christ, to die for you and i while we were still living in sin. With Him you can be made new, you are covered with the Precious Blood of Jesus. Following Him is not going to be easy, cutting off sin, changing ways that you live in sin and/or cutting off friends. Not living like the world can be hard in the beginning. But it really is worth it. Please start reading the Bible and pray to receive Him im in a way that is undeniable. Because He will make Himself known to you. i say this to you in love and compassion. Jesus loves you and start to live for Him. It will be the best opportunity of your life.
