Pro tip for folks who wear eye makup: double cleanse! First cleanse should be oil based. It will break down even waterproof mascara and eyeliner. There are tons on the market, in the form of either a cleansing oil or a cleansing balm. If you don't have access to that, a plain, skin safe oil will do the job just fine (it's just harder to rinse off). No makeup wipe on the market can even hold a candle to the makeup removing abilities of an oil cleanser. Oil based cleansers usually don't have preservatives either (anhydrous products aren't ideal for bacterial proliferation), so there's no risk of preservatives harming the eye. The second cleanse should be your regular eye cleanser, and it's usually water based. This gets the very last bits of oil and debris off of your skin and eyes. You should use a regular cleanser on your whole face even if you used the oil cleanser on your whole face - again, will remove any oily residue and debris.
Yes! I used to get clogged me in onion glands all the time but I was not removing my make up well enough. Now I am careful about it and also throw away eye make up every 6 months at least.
Problem is most soaps tell you to keep AWAY from your eyes (for good reason, its irritating) not enough people are aware you can get gentle eye cleanser. I had to learn what works for me after developing ocular rosacea.
Many thanks, Doctor! First time in my life I've seen this issue addressed. And so thankful for all your helpful options and links. Love the way you present + great channel layout, complete with chapters to go back and refer to. Nice work!
I am happy you covered this! I have been having terrible pain after my Eylea injections! Now they make sure to rinse my eyes after the injections, but often I have this sandy, gravelly feeling in my eyes that is disturbing! Usually lasting over 24 hrs. So I will definitely give these a try! I also have dizziness, which I read is a side-effect from Eylea. The doc finally told me they are calcium crystals in my middle ear! There is an movement you can do..the Eppley maneuver? I haven’t researched that yet, but I think chirps are familiar with it. Thanks for your great info!! 💕💕💕
I stopped using baby shampoo since it uses sodium lauyrl sulfate, which is very drying. The skin around your eye is very thin and can become pretty flaky. The Hydrating Cleanser from Cerave is gentle and does not sting my eyes. The foaming version is probably fine, but suds require more water to rinse out and I want to avoid excess friction around my eyes.
But spray foams are okay since they are at already maximum lather. It's the SLS that keeps lathering up that it takes a lot of scrubbing to get it fully out.
I've been cleaning my eyelashes for years. I honestly can't remember what made me notice that I had build up in my lashes and I was grossed out. I use a rag daily and run it along my top and bottom lash line and it lifts any build up out of my lashes. Especially because when we're sleeping crud tends to build up over night so I make sure to get all of that out in the morning.
Do you know of any wipes that will work? I’ve tried baby wipes that I lightly rinse with clean water but they still dry my eyes out and sting a bit. I ride a motorcycle and get dust in my eyes and contacts and I try to clean my eyelids and lashes but nothing seems to work, especially nothing portable. My only option is an eyewash kit and clean cloth at home, which isn’t always an option. Any tips or recommendations would be appreciated a ton!
There was this girl who told me she was running late because her mom made her get a facial. No sooner did she say that did she rub the crud from her eye lids. Her face looked gross too.😮
@@DanteYewToobOld question, I realize, but for future readers; he had recommended OCuSOFT lid scrubs… there’s leave-on & wash-off available. I used for a couple of weeks until I saw total results. Still use occasionally, but have taken to scrubbing with salicylic acid daily, which maybe too harsh & drying for many.
I really appreciate your videos!!! I was told I have Dry Eye and to go buy lubricating eye drops. That's It! So glad to have found your channel to learn how to take better care of my eyes!
How come nobody ever tells you or shows you how to wash your eyelids until you have a problem? When I went to my eye doctor and was I told I had blepharitis I was to told to clean with systane lid wipes. They did the job and now I don’t neglect my lids 😀
Right. I don’t recall any eye doctor ever telling me to wash my eyelids/lashes in this way prior to having an issue. You would think that washing your face everyday and night would do the trick.
I was told to use Ocusoft eyelid scrub plus. Never seemed to 100% clear the issue and sometime the lid would still crack open. Reading my comments on the subject I tried advice from one person and it has cleared up my issue of over 6 years, within less than 30 days! I switched over to Systane lid wipes. Bought infant baby washcloths, also. Much better!
I used baby shampoo as recommended, for years. After recently learning that it’s no longer recommended, I stopped and switched to MYBOclean, which I LOVE! It’s so soothing that I now look forward to washing my eyes rather than hating the hassle of it. I use a Nulids device with it but find the MYBOclean brush to feel as effective. I love the MYBOCLEAN so much I then go ahead and wash my whole face with it using their brush. After applying moisturizer and sunscreen I spray my eyes with Hypochlor. I used to spray it on a gauze and then wipe my eyes with it. That was wasteful and not nearly as soothing as a direct spray. I learned that it’s better to not spray too close but at enough distance to get more of a misting effect. I now love my Hypochlor too as it’s also very soothing.
Wow - I've been wearing glasses for about 40 years, and I don't recall any eye doctor discussing this topic with me! I've learned something new! Thanks for this, and I'll ask at my next eye exam. In a future video, please also address care of the eyes and the entire area when undergoing chemo -- the eyebrows and eyelashes fall out, and there can be a lot of extra irritation to the eyes because of that.
I love the Zocular treatment that is done in the clinic-it’s so refreshing! Every eye doctor I know recommends the OcuSoft lid scrubs-all of them are great, the regular, plus, and allergy. What I usually do on a daily basis, at minimum, is get a warm damp washcloth and run it over my lids and lashes. I have oily lids and a little lash dandruff, so I have to clean my eyes when I wake up.
My eye doctor recommended a wipe with tea tree oil. They worked great but were expensive and hard to find. I found a glycerine bases tea tree oil soap at piping rock. I just use that to wash my face. Works just as well as the wipes.
Hey there Dr. Allen, Dr. Anderson (O.D.) here. This video is an energetically fun and enlightening CE (continuing education) program, as far as I'm concerned! Thanks!
I actually started washing my eyelashes when I got eyelash extensions. I was given a solution to use daily. I don’t wear eyelash extensions anymore, but I continue cleansing my lashes daily.
I’ve been dealing with dry eye, and wiping with the Avenova spray has made a difference in how comfortable my eyes feel throughout the day. It’s also prevented stinging that I would occasionally get from putting drops in, which I assume was caused by some remnant skin cream or oil. I’ve never tried really rubbing at the base of the eyelashes, though. Would a Q-tip wetted with Avenova be a safe tool to begin with? Okay on the waterline, too?
I have had issues with crusting in my eyelashes since I was a kid. I have recently had issues with my eyes feeling dry and gritty. As a glasses wearer for 20+ years, I have seen many eye doctors and recently a specialist. NO doctor has ever mentioned washing my eyelids and eyelashes. Ugh
You need to check with your ophthalmologist before using some of the products mentioned here, such as the toothbrush-type device or the sonicare type device. If you have map/dot/fingerprint dystrophy, recurrent cornea erosions, ocular rosacea, etc. you could very easily injure yourself using these types of products. Stick to the basics in these cases, such as the lid cleaning sprays and wipes that your ophthalmologist recommends. Or, at the very least, check with your eye doctor/surgeon.
My understanding is that people who are prone to dandruff, eczema, and rosacea also tend to be prone to blepharitis. So it's not always necessarily from not washing eyelids. Is this true? Is there anything different or additional you would recommend for people with those issues regarding eye care or just the same protocols?
I have eczema and rosacea and yes, it seems I am more prone to it. I always washed my eyelids and eyelashes, but with my regular face wash, which was too harsh for my eyes. I now have a cleaning solution for my lids called Blephacura. My eyes are still dry and my lids are inflamed, but I hope it will help.
I have that tendency also. And the best thing for those flareups for me is avoiding grains and carbs on a keto diet. It's hard because I'm really sort of addicted to those things but my immune system can't seem to handle them and I get I guess it's yeast overgrowth
In the shower I don't really use anything specific, remnants of body wash more than likely but I let the water run over my head after washing my hair and clean around my ears, nose, eyes and my face in general.
For the people who want an affordable alternative to the expensive device in the video, I put hot pads on my eyes then use my VIBRATOR to massage my eyelids. It helps miraculously with my blepharitis.
😂😂😂 VIBRATOR yeah okay you're kidding right for REAL this is disgusting what the HELL 😵💫🤮😵💫🤢😵💫 USE a cotton rounds you can even find ORGANIC ones with warm to hot but not scalding hot and your CLEAN hands and the foaming tea tree wash is GREAT but your VIBRATOR come on what are you thinking this is NOT for your eyes 🥴👀😵💫👀🥴
@@1957esYeah but the end of your toothbrush might be germy as well ugh just use your clean hands massage the pad gently and let it sit there with the warm to hot water you don't need VIBRATION to get the job done And the tea tree foaming wash is GREAT as well ALL you need is cotton rounds you can even buy ORGANIC ones warm to hot water and a good foaming eyelid wash and maybe some preservative free eye drops like the Systane brand and the Bosch and Lomb saline eye wash this is ALL good stuff to have on hand at the end of the day🌈👍🏻🌈
Thank you Dr. Joseph for this valuable content. I have dry eye and my eyes usually look as the examples you show at the begginig of the video (despite the lubricating eye drops and some cleaning). Due to the cost of some of these cleaning products, I decided to try with povidone-iodine on my eyelids after some readings about it. I just wanted to share with you, that it helped me to reduce the reddishness of my eyelids and eyes. But I sttopped because it stings when applied and I could not find more studies related. I would appreciate your comments or a video about iodopovidone use. Especially for those who cannot afford some of these expensive products.
One eye doctor gave me a Rx, which helped. Another refused to, and wanted to plug my tear ducts instead. I declined. No one suggested a cleansing regimen. I figured that out for myself. Thank you for the PSA.
Thank you so much for this video! You explain everything so well and make it easy to understand. Only question I have is will I have any problems with any of the products mentioned, if I have ptosis of my eyelid? My eyelids don't completely close and not sure if any of the products you mentioned will bother the eyeballs 👀 themselves. I have tried so many things mentioned in the beginning and nothing is helping. Thank you for your recommendations!
I use Blepharitis and Blink eye products. My optician diagnosed my blepharitis and I don’t use any cosmetics on my eyelids, I use mascara but use the Blepharitis on that as recommended and then use the method recommended which is putting Blepharitis on cotton pads and gently putting that over the eyelids.
I'm using those wipes regularly now. My optician suggested baby shampoo but after watching this switched that out for the wipes. I also will dilute a little TTree oil in the palm of my hand and massage right into the corner of my closed eye.
My mother couldn't have her cataract removal operation until she'd ridded her eyelashes of blepharitis. She had to bathe them with boiled, cooled water and salt using cotton wool swabs, evening and morning. It must have worked as she had her operation. It was a big surprise to her as she washed her face daily and carefully removed all her eye makeup before sleeping. Thank you for this enlightening lecture.
Amazing! So there was a good reason my parents used to require their children to wash our faces every morning upon awaking and before going to bed. We practiced this hygiene in the 40s and 60s.
Also have to be careful because eyelashes can be causing the issue as a sign of overall autoimmune issues. For example, Trichiasis, and distichiasis- eyelashes stabbing at the eyes as a symptom of ocular pemphigoid. Apparently, those eyelashes were a sign to come before scaring along the outsides of my eyes.
I have Ocular Rosacea and my eye doctor advised me to wash my eyelids daily. Of the products described in this video is there one that is best suited for my condition? It's a struggle to find products that help clear the oil ducts without irritating my skin. Thanks. Your videos are so helpful.
I've been using castor oil on my eyes for a number of months, as well as warm compressed and cleaning my eyelashes with just warm/ hot water and gentle soap.
I guess you've tried Blephadex eyelid wipes and Cliradex . I'm using both daily now for demodex and MGD. I'll see how my lashes look when I go for my next exam. Cliradex is the strongest and if it gets rid of the mites, I can live with the stinging. Sounds like you like the Hylawipes the best., but I guess only when your eye dr. checks under the microscope, he can tell which is the worse problem - demodex or MGD.
My eye cleansing regime causes 0 irritation and never once had an issue with my eyelids since I started, it's also free... water and then my T shirt to wipe, works great and inexpensive.
My issue with the NuLids is that at that price point the battery should last more than a week of once a day use. Mine brand new out of the box only lasts about 4-5 days.
Attacking people for their problem by saying they don't have good hygiene? They used to do that to teens with hormonal acne. Why Don't doctors ever culture the eyelashes to figure out what the problem is? Is it bacteria, yeast, fungus, viral, or mites. Or it it an autoimmunity problem the body is attacking lashes and causes flakes and inflammation like psoriasis? Who here in the comment section thinks their problem is they don't have good hygiene? How dry is all our eye lid skin from the excessive washing of eyelids?
Oh come on don’t wah wah over it. It probably is true for many people, maybe most. And he’s giving good options that won’t dry your eyes out, so try to thank him instead of shame him.
I have had this for years. And I’ve tied it to a fragrance allergy. If I’m in a room with febreeze or air fresheners, my eyes will puff up within 24 hours. I’ve seen doctors specialist allergist and surgeons and nobody can help. I can’t use the wipes, skin too sensitive. Baby shampoo isn’t good for me either and the preservatives aggravated it. I use witch hazel for now. Seems to work. What can I do? I have pinpointed it to this air fragrances which I avoid. But the doctors keep telling me to deal with it and it’s not that. Sometimes I am forced to be around them. It feels like spiders on my lids. Next day BOOM puffy and swollen
I feel ya Dave, I also have serious fragrance issues! In addition to affecting my eyes, I cannot breath around those nasty things, and depending on what chemicals are in them, I also have had seizures being around them. For years I've had to turn around and RUN out of a building due to plug-ins, febreeze, ect. ..... Even doctor and dentist appointments! I've begged them to please stop using them, but they refuse. I even went 2.5 years w/o a teeth cleaning because I couldn't find a dentist w/o plug-ins. The only physicians (as a whole) that really seem to 'get it' are Lung-Allergy specialists. I remember back in the 70's and earlier when doctors truly believed in their motto 'First ... do no harm'. Dave, are you familiar with 'EWG' website? Has some helpful info. Also, FB has MCS websites that can help! Good luck!!
Dr. Allen, I have watched your UA-cam videos for almost 2 years. I have a question? I recently bought Nulids and had two Blephex treatments from my eye doctor. I've literally followed all of your tips. My eye doctor is not fully educated on Nulids and she also recommended I put a drop of Xiidra in both eyes prior to doing a warm compress. My current routine is wake up, wash eyelid with Ocusoft or Zocular foam, once clean then I use Nulid around my eyes, wipe off the gel with a Bruder eye wipe, add one drop of Xiidra to each eye, pinch between nose, look down for 1-2 min, wipe any drops that are on my skin or not absorbed, then warm compress, massage like you have demonstrated, clean then put my contacts in. I have also tried adding Xiidra after the compress vs before and cannot tell that much of a difference (it's a tad better) but it also takes longer since I have to wait 15 min prior to putting in my contacts. What's your suggestion? Thanks for all of your help!
Sir i am from India, I am suffering from a problem in my eyes that is frothy in my eye that come from eyelid when I blink. I am very scared because it is causing dryness in my eyes. Please suggest me the treatment.
Wondering what your thoughts are on using Hylo night ointment for night? I’m confused about the retinol added. Why is retinol palmitate safe in this ointment but anti wrinkle creams with retinol can cause dry eye?
I'm a simple woman. I see Doctor Eye Health post a video, I click. I watch through my eyes that are still dry despite following my eye doctor's orders 😭
I wonder how the first mite to occupy your eyelashes manages to get there where does it originate from and how do they travel and migrate to get to eyelashes and how do they locate eyelashes and know where they are on top of that eyelashes are moving fast when you blink
The best l use is hand sanitiser, rub into lids and lashes for 20 sec, keep eyes tightly shut for 60 sec after, repeat twice daily for 3 days, all will be revealed by weeks end, works a treat on mine.
I've have an ugly bump near the lash line, and even specialists tell me to put a wam washcloth on it and poof! It will disappear! Two years and counting waiting for that magic.
If you recommend the tools, does insurance cover? Mine and hubby’s eyes are behind glasses and in front of screens. These recommendations seem wonderful, and if prescribed would be great.
Best to ask your local doctor what the bump is, but many people who do have blepharitis also develop a stye. If you ever get a stye, here are some tips to help ua-cam.com/video/3Mh1m_sdREM/v-deo.html
Dr Allen. I have severe blepharitis and I cannot get rid of the severe redness around my eye skin. It's so debilitating. Are there any treatments to improve the eye skin?
Aquaphor shampoo totally doesn't sting if it gets in the eyes. Better than baby shampoo. Castile sopa shampoo, which is more organic, is also great. But castile soaps will clog your pipes unless you run lots of hot water.
I went to my optometrist today. Guess what, after years of battling with Blepharitis, using so many products, costly and time-consuming and inconvenience ,I'm completely clean after about 6 treatments of..... Ivermectin.
Wouldn't usual water (in eyes) and soap/facewash (on skin) do the trick? I've never used any of these products on the eyes and so far so good havent' had an infection on the lids.
As a cosmetologist of 30 years, I can tell you that no tears baby shampoo is designed to remove cradle cap from baby's scalps so it is one of the strongest and highest pH shampoos we make. This would be the reason it makes this condition worse for the eyes also. The reason the shampoo doesn't burn the eyes is because it has a mild pain reliever in the formula so that the strong chemicals don't make the baby cry. It doesn't however, mean it's mild.
Do you clean your eyelids and eyelashes regularly? What do you use?
Very Informative, From now I will

Me too on the Avenova on all counts
I have had issues with crusting in my eyelashes since I was a kid. I have recently had issues with my eyes feeling dry and gritty. As a glasses wearer for 20+ years, I have seen many eye doctors and recently a specialist. NO doctor has ever mentioned washing my eyelids and eyelashes. Ugh
Hi. How are your eyes now please?😊
What about cotton ball with peroxide and water, then a loose cloth patch with castor oil, pretty natural stuff
OMG i do this too!!! I specifically bought one for this purpose and it helps so much!! Great minds think alike!!
Oh my god. Sounds germy no matter how well it’s cleaned. I use the back of my old Sonicare toothbrush
wait whats a hot pad?
😂😂😂
VIBRATOR yeah okay you're kidding right for REAL this is disgusting what the HELL
😵💫🤮😵💫🤢😵💫
USE a cotton rounds you can even find ORGANIC ones with warm to hot but not scalding hot and your CLEAN hands and the foaming tea tree wash is GREAT but your VIBRATOR come on what are you thinking this is NOT for your eyes 🥴👀😵💫👀🥴
@@1957esYeah but the end of your toothbrush might be germy as well ugh just use your clean hands massage the pad gently and let it sit there with the warm to hot water you don't need VIBRATION to get the job done
And the tea tree foaming wash is GREAT as well ALL you need is cotton rounds you can even buy ORGANIC ones warm to hot water and a good foaming eyelid wash and maybe some preservative free eye drops like the Systane brand and the Bosch and Lomb saline eye wash this is ALL good stuff to have on hand at the end of the day🌈👍🏻🌈
I'm so grossed out but I needed to hear this.
Thank you Dr. I was able to treat this ailment myself....as a nurse I had no idea about the build up and ensuring complications. BLESS
It’s also a good idea to wash your pillowcases frequently.
For blepharitis I use OcuSoft Lid Scub Plus and SkinSmart antimicrobial spray.
I prefer to stay away from chemicals. There are other ways of doing it without the need for chemicals.
Mine too...my doc just tells me hot pack and cold pack...my eyes look horrible and red right now...so dry. Ty doc gonna try some of these.🤔❤
@@patriotgirl3784 I have days they are so awful I can’t wear any make up at all. It’s such an embarrassing condition, especially for women.
@@lyndaczika6327 yes I hear ya!
One eye doctor gave me a Rx, which helped. Another refused to, and wanted to plug my tear ducts instead. I declined.
No one suggested a cleansing regimen. I figured that out for myself.
Thank you for the PSA.
Great info, especially for us false eyelash/ extension wearers👍
Wow this was incredibly helpful. No eye doctor ever gave me this information before. Thank you!
Thanks for all the advice. This is a very interesting video.
I have Ocular Rosacea and my eye doctor advised me to wash my eyelids daily. Of the products described in this video is there one that is best suited for my condition? It's a struggle to find products that help clear the oil ducts without irritating my skin. Thanks. Your videos are so helpful.
Thank you so much! Another informative video. So useful 🙂
Happy to help Jana! Thanks
I've been using castor oil on my eyes for a number of months, as well as warm compressed and cleaning my eyelashes with just warm/ hot water and gentle soap.
Thank you so much dr. for this very informative session. I have a very dry eye. I’ll try this and hopefully it will alleviate my problem.,
'Cure water" is a Japanese product availabe in Asia with hypochlorous acid I found and use.
Never heard of this until the first chalazione.
When I shower....I let the water wash over my eyes. P.S. Don't forget to clean your showerhead regularly.
OOOh good tip!
I just use my facial cleanser on my eyelids and that seems to work fine to me.
I started using those ocusoft wipes and my eyes feel a little better
Thanks for doing videos ive had dry eyes since my 40s fab info
Glad it is helpful!
My eye cleansing regime causes 0 irritation and never once had an issue with my eyelids since I started, it's also free... water and then my T shirt to wipe, works great and inexpensive.
Haha that is great!
Is there any product that help eyelashes grow back ?
My issue with the NuLids is that at that price point the battery should last more than a week of once a day use. Mine brand new out of the box only lasts about 4-5 days.
Damn!! Didn't know my lashes and lids were soo nasty!!😅😂😂
If you could only see behind the microscope!
@@DoctorEyeHealth true lol😂
Lmbo!! And the way he says it and several times had me giggling. 😅
Great info. I am looking forward to trying the MyBo brush and one of tge cleaners. Thank you ❣
How do you not wash your face without washing your eyes??
Can you do a video on night driving glasses? Thanks 😊
I use Occusoft cleansing wipes.
Wow! Thank you so much for this amazingly informative video!
You are so welcome! Happy to help!
Sir i am from India, I am suffering from a problem in my eyes that is frothy in my eye that come from eyelid when I blink. I am very scared because it is causing dryness in my eyes. Please suggest me the treatment.
I don’t wear eye makeup but still sometimes I blepharitis , it’s because I have oily skin so I use eyelid cleanser
I do wish you listed prices or pointed out which is the most budget friendly. Inflation exists yes but ball park would be appreciated
Wondering what your thoughts are on using Hylo night ointment for night? I’m confused about the retinol added. Why is retinol palmitate safe in this ointment but anti wrinkle creams with retinol can cause dry eye?
The info in this video is sooo good...great job👍🤗
You have amazing information better than my eye doctor!!!
I'm a simple woman. I see Doctor Eye Health post a video, I click.
I watch through my eyes that are still dry despite following my eye doctor's orders 😭
I use 7th Generation Baby Wipes. Does the job and relatively inexpensive. I do my eyebrows and forehead too.
Heyedrate spray is amazing for me! I swear by it!
Great information; I did not know one can have all the stuff in the eye lashes and lid. I’m going to look more closely 👁
Thank you for your videos
They are so helpful 😢!
Does cleaning the eyelids cause them to fall out? How can I keep my eyelids clean while still maintaining good lash growth?
Thanks Dr for this great information ❤❤
Always happy to help!
Agree eyelids are super nasty especially at the slit-lamp!!! The worst are false eyelashes - the glue gets so much build up and gunk!
I wear lots of eye makeup and LOVE taking it off. Now I will NEVER sleep in makeup again! ⚜
I just had blepharitis. But there's still a tiny bump...how do I get rid of that bump. I want my lash extension back doc 😢
Best to ask your local doctor what the bump is, but many people who do have blepharitis also develop a stye. If you ever get a stye, here are some tips to help ua-cam.com/video/3Mh1m_sdREM/v-deo.html
Thank you so so much for these videos
Dr Allen. I have severe blepharitis and I cannot get rid of the severe redness around my eye skin. It's so debilitating. Are there any treatments to improve the eye skin?
Will this help my eyelashes grow back though? I’ve lost most of them and it’s making me so depressed 😢
Ivermectin.
Can you share more? I just went through 5 days of eye pain because of blepharitis. Id love to hear more...
I am 70 years old and worn glasses almost all of them. This is the very first time I have ever heard this.
Wouldn't usual water (in eyes) and soap/facewash (on skin) do the trick? I've never used any of these products on the eyes and so far so good havent' had an infection on the lids.
AWESOME!!!! Thanks! 👀
You're welcome!! Thanks for watching Carnita!
If you’re careful can you just use soap? Or hot water?
hiiii do you mind sharing more about the difference between hydrogel and silicone hydrogel contact lenses? and also some good contact lens brands
Nice review about the eyes 👀 👌
Hey doc, wondering if even things like micellular water or the normal facial cleansing foam would work??
