To be honest, I don't use more than makeup remover liquid, and only when there's mascara to remove. And no eye doctor has ever told me I should clean anything there, weirdly enough.
I've had great results with Aveeno baby daily moisturizing wash and shampoo , it's tear free for sensitive skin . Highly recommend it! I too had always used j&j baby shampoo but found it drying. Happy Thanksgiving to you!!!✌🧡🦃🍂🍁👁
How come nobody ever tells you or shows you how to wash your eyelids until you have a problem? When I went to my eye doctor and was I told I had blepharitis I was to told to clean with systane lid wipes. They did the job and now I don’t neglect my lids 😀
Right. I don’t recall any eye doctor ever telling me to wash my eyelids/lashes in this way prior to having an issue. You would think that washing your face everyday and night would do the trick.
I complained to my eye specialist that thought I had an eye infection from like my pillow. He never responded to me about this though I brought it up repeatedly. I started changing my pillow cases several times a week and that helped. I purchased a new pillow that helped more. I never considered eye hygiene itself. I'm saving this video to review.
My heart all but stopped watching the video. I have no words I could say except I wish I had known this years ago. I will not tell you personal horror stories. I will tell you although its likely much too late I am going out to look for the foam and budgeting for Nulids device. Everything I've learned thus far on your channel absolutely has made a undeniable difference. I can only hope to not make things worse faster. Short off topic note: the biggest take away among many, my feeling unsafe driving due to floaters was not simply me not sucking it up, but something others had felt also I learned from listening to your videos. You really may have save other people's lives.
I'm appalled that NO eye doctors ever told me about this! I've been wearing glasses & seeing those docs for decades too. If anything I've been led to believe that it's best to leave eyelids alone unless makeup needs to be removed. (Mites?!? Oh no! 👀)
I have had Blephritis since 2003. Flared up when I had tickets for a Dixie Chicks concert Went to the concert in agony. Red sore eyes. Next day saw eye doc and eye nurses told me Blephritis this is what you do It was Boil water three times a day use cotton bud and water cooled but still warm The warmth is important. Then clean eyelids bottom and top, also some eye drops After 3 weeks I went back much better. I was then told. Clean eyelids twice a day And given viscotears for dry eyes, so I have done this ever since. Had one flare up only When I had some antibiotic eye drops then back on the Viscotears. The eye test examiner says whatever you are doing keep on. This is my experience and you only have to buy cotton buds and use a kettle twice a day Egg cup full Thank you for reading. Good luck all.
Thank you! I’ve suffered from dye eye for quite some time and even went to my doctor. Never did she mention anything about cleaning my eyelids. And yet, when I wake up in the morning, my eyes are gritty and don’t want to function. You have explained clearly what my problem could be. Thank you, you are my hero!
Problem is most soaps tell you to keep AWAY from your eyes (for good reason, its irritating) not enough people are aware you can get gentle eye cleanser. I had to learn what works for me after developing ocular rosacea.
I'm glad you mentioned tea tree oil. I mix a little bit of tea tree oil in my face wash (just use on my eye lids, not my whole face). I do this in the shower. It has done wonders for my eyes. My eyelashes have grown back.
@UCyVSTFJpcKtWWgs0LJsOVsQ tea tree essential oil. With the face wash mixed in, it become similar to the shampoo in the video. The benefit to the way I do it is price and you can adjust the amount of oil used. My eye doctor uses pure oil, nothing to dilute it out. I found this to be to intense.
What face wash do you use to mix the tea tree oil in? And you use this mix just on your lids? I have had eyelash issues for the longest time and lack of them is a huge problem 🙃
Pro tip for folks who wear eye makup: double cleanse! First cleanse should be oil based. It will break down even waterproof mascara and eyeliner. There are tons on the market, in the form of either a cleansing oil or a cleansing balm. If you don't have access to that, a plain, skin safe oil will do the job just fine (it's just harder to rinse off). No makeup wipe on the market can even hold a candle to the makeup removing abilities of an oil cleanser. Oil based cleansers usually don't have preservatives either (anhydrous products aren't ideal for bacterial proliferation), so there's no risk of preservatives harming the eye. The second cleanse should be your regular eye cleanser, and it's usually water based. This gets the very last bits of oil and debris off of your skin and eyes. You should use a regular cleanser on your whole face even if you used the oil cleanser on your whole face - again, will remove any oily residue and debris.
Yes! I used to get clogged me in onion glands all the time but I was not removing my make up well enough. Now I am careful about it and also throw away eye make up every 6 months at least.
I got chalesions(sp) on the inside of my eyelid not just once but twice and they are awful. Now I wash my eyelids and eyelashes with Cetaphil which absolutely does not irritate.
So glad I found your videos. I have been in pain for over a year. Recently had Cornea surgery and now I believe my eye continues to burn(not as much as with a hole in my cornea) due to dryness. Thanks to your videos I found out about eye testing for dry eyes and through some of the links I was able to setup an appointment in my area! I was feeling completely hopeless the day I found that link and my appointment is tomorrow. I hope to get more definitive information through testing at a Dry Eye Center tomorrow so I can come up with a new eye routine that hopefully will give me better quality of life. Your videos are AMAZING!
After watching this video, I'm going to clean my eyes! 🙀 I'm just blown away that I NEVER heard anything about it before! Glasses at age 9 and now I'm 58!
Many thanks, Doctor! First time in my life I've seen this issue addressed. And so thankful for all your helpful options and links. Love the way you present + great channel layout, complete with chapters to go back and refer to. Nice work!
I am happy you covered this! I have been having terrible pain after my Eylea injections! Now they make sure to rinse my eyes after the injections, but often I have this sandy, gravelly feeling in my eyes that is disturbing! Usually lasting over 24 hrs. So I will definitely give these a try! I also have dizziness, which I read is a side-effect from Eylea. The doc finally told me they are calcium crystals in my middle ear! There is an movement you can do..the Eppley maneuver? I haven’t researched that yet, but I think chirps are familiar with it. Thanks for your great info!! 💕💕💕
Also clean your eyelash curlers and eyelash combs before every use people. Also throw out mascara after a few months after opening even if there is product left in the tube
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks! I’m excited for it! I’ll make sure to send it to my companions and colleagues who don’t take me seriously when I say makeup and a makeup tools are generally safe but become unsanitary SOO easily without proper care. It’s even worse if you wear contact lenses without proper makeup hygiene. 😰
I use the wipes but I half them using one half for my right eye and the other half for the left. I also use baby shampoo to wash my face and eyes in the shower. Three times a day I use optase spray close my eyes and spray onto my eye lids leave for a minute and pat dry with a different tissue for each eye. I also use eye lash brushes to remove any dandruff like material before I apply any treatments I purchase in bulk from Amazon . I can’t wear eye makeup as my eyelashes are spars since Blepharitis. I also change my pillow case daily. I have autoimmune diseases and my optician says that my weak immune system could be a factor.
Thank you for not using amazon links. Amazon is becoming a monopoly and need to use other stores or will not have choices. And Thanks for your videos, I just found you and I wish I lived near there, so I can get exam there.
I've been cleaning my eyelashes for years. I honestly can't remember what made me notice that I had build up in my lashes and I was grossed out. I use a rag daily and run it along my top and bottom lash line and it lifts any build up out of my lashes. Especially because when we're sleeping crud tends to build up over night so I make sure to get all of that out in the morning.
Do you know of any wipes that will work? I’ve tried baby wipes that I lightly rinse with clean water but they still dry my eyes out and sting a bit. I ride a motorcycle and get dust in my eyes and contacts and I try to clean my eyelids and lashes but nothing seems to work, especially nothing portable. My only option is an eyewash kit and clean cloth at home, which isn’t always an option. Any tips or recommendations would be appreciated a ton!
There was this girl who told me she was running late because her mom made her get a facial. No sooner did she say that did she rub the crud from her eye lids. Her face looked gross too.😮
@@DanteYewToobOld question, I realize, but for future readers; he had recommended OCuSOFT lid scrubs… there’s leave-on & wash-off available. I used for a couple of weeks until I saw total results. Still use occasionally, but have taken to scrubbing with salicylic acid daily, which maybe too harsh & drying for many.
@@susanwallis3796 Yeah me too. 69 and only ever washed my face at least once a day with soap and water - no issues. Getting older find I have to scrape a bit of crud off my lashes first thing in the morning... still no issues.
Omg thank you my eyes have been killing me for weeks and weeks I got a Qtip and some peroxide and cleaned my eyelids and OMG the relief happened instantly and I am talking yesterday my first time doing it 7/28/24 all my life I never heard of this I thank everyone on here yall gave me the idea ❤❤❤
Thank you! I have been dealing with dry eyes, and as the condition worsened, saw a specialist. I was diagnosed with Blepharitis. I am following the specialists instructions, which did not mention massaging the eyelids....I only learned about that through Internet Searches. But no one explained just how to do the massages. In the first of your videos you gave a very comprehensive tutorial on that submect. I will be watchig more. THANK YOU!!!!!
I was told to use Ocusoft eyelid scrub plus. Never seemed to 100% clear the issue and sometime the lid would still crack open. Reading my comments on the subject I tried advice from one person and it has cleared up my issue of over 6 years, within less than 30 days! I switched over to Systane lid wipes. Bought infant baby washcloths, also. Much better!
I really appreciate your videos!!! I was told I have Dry Eye and to go buy lubricating eye drops. That's It! So glad to have found your channel to learn how to take better care of my eyes!
Another thing I found is that using eye cream before going to bed dries my eyes out terribly overnight, so I had to stop. I think it seeps into the eyes even if I try to leave a gap. Thank you so much for this info.
I stopped using baby shampoo since it uses sodium lauyrl sulfate, which is very drying. The skin around your eye is very thin and can become pretty flaky. The Hydrating Cleanser from Cerave is gentle and does not sting my eyes. The foaming version is probably fine, but suds require more water to rinse out and I want to avoid excess friction around my eyes.
But spray foams are okay since they are at already maximum lather. It's the SLS that keeps lathering up that it takes a lot of scrubbing to get it fully out.
I used baby shampoo as recommended, for years. After recently learning that it’s no longer recommended, I stopped and switched to MYBOclean, which I LOVE! It’s so soothing that I now look forward to washing my eyes rather than hating the hassle of it. I use a Nulids device with it but find the MYBOclean brush to feel as effective. I love the MYBOCLEAN so much I then go ahead and wash my whole face with it using their brush. After applying moisturizer and sunscreen I spray my eyes with Hypochlor. I used to spray it on a gauze and then wipe my eyes with it. That was wasteful and not nearly as soothing as a direct spray. I learned that it’s better to not spray too close but at enough distance to get more of a misting effect. I now love my Hypochlor too as it’s also very soothing.
Glad for the product knowledge. I suffer with pretty harsh (feels like to me) dry eye. My ophthalmologist never mentioned eyelash health, cleaning techniques, products... nothing. I even asked if something about my routine or diet or something could help. Nothing but eyedrops. Was having to use eye drops about 5-6 times a day for a while (more than ever). Saw your video about stimulating the meibomian glands. That's helped reduce the number of times I have had to use eye drops already by about half. Now that I think about it, it seems to eye drops just contributed to more dryness.
Same here, my eye doctor laughed at me and gave me a coupon for some eyedrops! This is good info that I've never heard before. I started squeezing a 1/2 lemon into my drinking water everyday...it stopped the dry eyes from the very first day! It has something to do with salt/potassium in the lemon hydrating the cells. Whatever, I've been good for over a year now, but my lashes have been itching recently which is why I'm here.
I love the Zocular treatment that is done in the clinic-it’s so refreshing! Every eye doctor I know recommends the OcuSoft lid scrubs-all of them are great, the regular, plus, and allergy. What I usually do on a daily basis, at minimum, is get a warm damp washcloth and run it over my lids and lashes. I have oily lids and a little lash dandruff, so I have to clean my eyes when I wake up.
Great video!! I must have gone to three different eye doctors and they just told me it was allergies. I did some research and your video popped up. You explained everything in great detail and offered a lot of helpful solutions...wish you were my eye doctor!
My understanding is that people who are prone to dandruff, eczema, and rosacea also tend to be prone to blepharitis. So it's not always necessarily from not washing eyelids. Is this true? Is there anything different or additional you would recommend for people with those issues regarding eye care or just the same protocols?
I have eczema and rosacea and yes, it seems I am more prone to it. I always washed my eyelids and eyelashes, but with my regular face wash, which was too harsh for my eyes. I now have a cleaning solution for my lids called Blephacura. My eyes are still dry and my lids are inflamed, but I hope it will help.
I have that tendency also. And the best thing for those flareups for me is avoiding grains and carbs on a keto diet. It's hard because I'm really sort of addicted to those things but my immune system can't seem to handle them and I get I guess it's yeast overgrowth
I work with an Ophthalmologist as her scribe, and yesterday we saw a dry eye patient who just refuses to stop wearing eye makeup. She tried lots of methods including Xiidra and even Restasis on a TID routine. She's not doing warm compresses because she felt they were irritating, she barely does the Avenova. IPL wouldn't even be a recommendation for her. We've pretty much gone through everything for her, but she, and I quote, "is a woman and has to look pretty."
Omg 🤦🏻♀️ I stopped using eyeshadow and mascara bc it irritates my eyes. How sad that she “needs makeup to look pretty”. Your health should come first.
@@colettejaques2559 My comment has nothing to do with shaming others. I shared my experience with eyeshadow and my skin issues. The quote made me sad bc woman should feel beautiful but we all have insecurities bc of society. I still stand by your health being a priority. I ask that before you jump to conclusions please ask and we can have a discussion. If you want to talk about being a hater than I’m not your person
I wasn't able to wear eye makeup for the last 15 years because I couldn't see too put it on. Developed dry eye around 2016. Still not wearing eye makeup then. I just had cataract surgery. Can see my eye lashes for the first time in years. Now I wear make up every day. The is no difference in my condition. Don't blame it on make up. Maybe on hygiene but wearing make up didn't change a thing about my eyes. So glad to be able to see again. Like a new lease on life!
I do the same thing you do with my eyelid wipes. After I wipe my lids I run it all across my forehead and face. I find it refreshing and cleanses really well.😊
This is magic! I’ve been putting ointment on my eyelids and weighing whether this irritation is worth going to the doctor for weeks! As long as my symptoms keep being just a minor annoyance, I’ll wait for my order to arrive so i can start cleaning my eyelids and see if that helps!
Here in England, I was told to wash with cotton wool imbued with very warm water. It does work! Leave the cotton piece for a minute or so on the eyelids.
I’ve had an Optometrist for years treating my glaucoma, never ever said anything about eyelids/lashes? Now I have dry eye & am seeing a specialist & she tells me about this, can’t believe it?
Sorry to hear that, we are just starting to see research come out showing how glaucoma medications can aggravate the ocular surface and made dry eye worse. Glad to hear you are seeing a specialist.
Have you ever heard of people using DMSO (50/50 with distilled water) ? I have heard of people spraying it directly in the eyes and healing minor vision stuff. [This is used for healing and repair of muscles on race horses, dogs and atheletes.]
My eye doctor recommended a wipe with tea tree oil. They worked great but were expensive and hard to find. I found a glycerine bases tea tree oil soap at piping rock. I just use that to wash my face. Works just as well as the wipes.
I played this video very loudly so my 23 year old son could hear it. He's one of those people who wears his monthly contacts for 3 months and has red irritated eyes. Great video!
That is how you end up with dry eye disease. I wish somebody told me. I would have never even started wearing contacts. Now my life revolves around eye drops and warm compresses.
I’ve been dealing with dry eye, and wiping with the Avenova spray has made a difference in how comfortable my eyes feel throughout the day. It’s also prevented stinging that I would occasionally get from putting drops in, which I assume was caused by some remnant skin cream or oil. I’ve never tried really rubbing at the base of the eyelashes, though. Would a Q-tip wetted with Avenova be a safe tool to begin with? Okay on the waterline, too?
I have always washed my eyebrows and eyelashes. I use Dr. Bronner's baby soap. I gently wash them and definitely take longer to rinse the soap off. I slowly open my eyes when I am done. But now that I see what you recommend for my eyelids, I am adding more to my eye care routine. Thank you for sharing.
I started having blepharitis at 20 ! I discovered because everytime I would put on contact lenses, it would flare up... So I stopped using them and now I have been cleaning my eyelashes with a lidwipe every single night !
Wow - I've been wearing glasses for about 40 years, and I don't recall any eye doctor discussing this topic with me! I've learned something new! Thanks for this, and I'll ask at my next eye exam. In a future video, please also address care of the eyes and the entire area when undergoing chemo -- the eyebrows and eyelashes fall out, and there can be a lot of extra irritation to the eyes because of that.
I always recommend warm wet cleaning with cotton. Procedure is pour a cotton in hot water and let them allow to warm or bearable for touch on the skin and then with clean hand fingers gently clean lashes of both eyes.
Yep I hold the hot cloth to my eye till the heat dissipates then hold the cloth in hot water again and squeeze out and hold it on my eye and repeat up to 10 times. Never been troubled with it since. The heat is key to melting away and unclogging the tiny microscopic pores on the eyelids of oil that has built up over time.
I want to thank you for this very informative video! I have been suffering yearly for well over 8 years years with styes during the fall season, always assuming I had had something irritate my my eye seasonally like an allergy. I sometimes had them occur following my yearly eye appointment. My eye doctor gave no help other than hot compresses and told me it was caused by “dandruff” on my eyelids and to use wipes. This year I had 2 very long lasting and painful styes, one in each in eye and decided to seek a better solution than hot compresses and weeks of painful enlarged lids. I found the over-the-counter acid spray product you demonstrated at my local pharmacy and within 2 days miraculous results and relief. 🙏🏻
Low cost cleansing pads... I use 2x2 inch WOVEN cotton gauze, one pad for each eye. The woven cotton has a rough texture to work loose grime, and woven means it has little holey squares to pull and hold the gunk while wiping your lashes. The gauze is also thin so you don't waste product.
Thank you! I've tried the Myboclean system and I really like how it feels (other cleaner foams sting) . Myboclean is really inexpensive and easy to use and take when travelling.
I have had issues with crusting in my eyelashes since I was a kid. I have recently had issues with my eyes feeling dry and gritty. As a glasses wearer for 20+ years, I have seen many eye doctors and recently a specialist. NO doctor has ever mentioned washing my eyelids and eyelashes. Ugh
I actually started washing my eyelashes when I got eyelash extensions. I was given a solution to use daily. I don’t wear eyelash extensions anymore, but I continue cleansing my lashes daily.
Thank you so much for this video! You explain everything so well and make it easy to understand. Only question I have is will I have any problems with any of the products mentioned, if I have ptosis of my eyelid? My eyelids don't completely close and not sure if any of the products you mentioned will bother the eyeballs 👀 themselves. I have tried so many things mentioned in the beginning and nothing is helping. Thank you for your recommendations!
In the shower I don't really use anything specific, remnants of body wash more than likely but I let the water run over my head after washing my hair and clean around my ears, nose, eyes and my face in general.
Washing the eyes is good and as a hygiene regime should be kept up and done first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. But the cure for Blepharitis which is caused by the way by blocked glands is purely blinking to open those glands up. Try this over a number of weeks, it does not cost a penny. At the start of this treatment, while most Blepharitis is at it’s worst blink 20 times about 20 times a day for a couple of weeks. After about ten blinks you should notice it begin to feel wet around your eyes, that is the glands opening. After a week or two, you may notice some improvement in your Blepharitis and you can gradually decrease the amount of blinks per day over the following weeks, but do about 50 before you go to sleep which I still do now to keep the glands open. And that’s it, this has worked for me for four years now and I hope it works for you.
Yes, thank you doctor! I have now become so afraid of using eye drops due to the non preservative eye drops that caused vision loss & death. Do you have any idea how we can maybe avoid this in the future? Anyway, I prefer gels as well. I use GenTeal gel for dry eyes. I also stopped using eye wash & now use distilled water on a cotton ball after sleeping & before using anything else. Thank you.
Lancome makes two great products sugar face scub and eye replenishing cream. I use both and they made. Tremendous difference. I can’t tolerate the eye drops. I also in the winter use home depot safety glasses sometimes when I am at home and the heat is on. Thus gives instant relief to dry eyes!
Dr Allen, I’m a little stunned how you knew I’ve been having this problem for about 3 weeks now! Who Knew, Blepharitis! I’m gonna try one of the topical treatments you recommended and Thank You for taking the time to explain something that must be common but honestly I’ve worked in healthcare for 36 yrs and never heard of this condition! I guess it’s time to start using the dry eye drops I was given too. Dr Allen, You’re a Godsend! Keep Doing What You Do!
Dr Allen, UA-cam just notified me that you responded to my comment 2 months ago. Thought you’d like to know that after using a generic CVS brand of eye wipes with Tea Tree Oil for about a week along with Dry Eye drops still daily, my condition has gone away. Now I pay more attention to washing my eyelids everyday. Great DX and even better Remedy💯 Thank You and Blessings Dr A!
Thank you for your recommendations. I finally determined the reason why the posterior lenses of my glasses recurrently get an oily film on them. I need to clean my eyelashes and eyelids!
I use 100% aloe vera juice that's drinkable. I put it in a small spray bottle, and spray my eyes once or twice a day. Never had a problem with infection.
For the people who want an affordable alternative to the expensive device in the video, I put hot pads on my eyes then use my VIBRATOR to massage my eyelids. It helps miraculously with my blepharitis.
😂😂😂 VIBRATOR yeah okay you're kidding right for REAL this is disgusting what the HELL 😵💫🤮😵💫🤢😵💫 USE a cotton rounds you can even find ORGANIC ones with warm to hot but not scalding hot and your CLEAN hands and the foaming tea tree wash is GREAT but your VIBRATOR come on what are you thinking this is NOT for your eyes 🥴👀😵💫👀🥴
@@1957esYeah but the end of your toothbrush might be germy as well ugh just use your clean hands massage the pad gently and let it sit there with the warm to hot water you don't need VIBRATION to get the job done And the tea tree foaming wash is GREAT as well ALL you need is cotton rounds you can even buy ORGANIC ones warm to hot water and a good foaming eyelid wash and maybe some preservative free eye drops like the Systane brand and the Bosch and Lomb saline eye wash this is ALL good stuff to have on hand at the end of the day🌈👍🏻🌈
My last eye doc when we lived in another state, didn’t mention this condition, addressed my itchy eyes, he thought it may be allergies and suggested removing eye makeup nightly. And to clean with baby shampoo. I think he’d rethink that now. But I will find some eye cleaners, thanks!
My eye Dr said to use baby shampoo for cleaning my eye lids. It made the problem worse. Dried out my eyelids something awful. I now use the systain eye wipes.
You need to check with your ophthalmologist before using some of the products mentioned here, such as the toothbrush-type device or the sonicare type device. If you have map/dot/fingerprint dystrophy, recurrent cornea erosions, ocular rosacea, etc. you could very easily injure yourself using these types of products. Stick to the basics in these cases, such as the lid cleaning sprays and wipes that your ophthalmologist recommends. Or, at the very least, check with your eye doctor/surgeon.
Hi, Karen here, I wanted to thank you for these AMAZING tips ! I have a lot of allergies to dust and cats, the warm compresses have helped me, I’m going to get the products you mentioned for allergies today, the eye wipes, and the solutions you recommended!
Also Pataday can still be purchased by prescription, it was a LOT cheaper that way for me! As it is expensive over the counter ! Hope this helps some folks save some $$$
Wow over 30 years ago I had an eye doctor tell me I had blepharitis. I have been dealing with eye redness and irritation ever since. Not once since then has an eye Dr told me about cleaning my eye lids to reduce redness, inflammation and dry eyes. I hope this works.
I use Blepharitis and Blink eye products. My optician diagnosed my blepharitis and I don’t use any cosmetics on my eyelids, I use mascara but use the Blepharitis on that as recommended and then use the method recommended which is putting Blepharitis on cotton pads and gently putting that over the eyelids.
Not sure if you've covered this yet: are there any good eye moisturizers for dry lids? Is that a thing? Like, could we moisturize after washing? Also, are there any sunscreens you recommend?
@@lindalamb7512 hold a warm cloth on your eyes for 20 minutes and roll your finger from below your eye upwards to the lash base. This will actually squeeze the oil out off the glands at the lash base. My mothers eye doctor did this to my mother with a camera magnifying her lash base. I could see the oil coming out. It was unbelievable. And use baby shampoo with a a-tip at the lash base. There may be videos showing the oil coming out of the pores at the lash base.
I am so impressed with your knowledge! And you are so thorough!!! I have been dealing with blepharitis for over 25 years!! It’s such an awful, annoying and exhausting condition! Seems like I can’t ever truly get it under control. Wondering if eyeliner or eye pencils should be avoided? I do wash my face every night. I do eyelid scrubs when I can but have been using Baby Shampoo! I will need to try some of the products you suggested. I have a question in regard to the eyelid spray. Do you still need to scrub/wash your lashes? Or do you simply spray? I will be checking out your links. Thank you for all the information!!! 😊😌
I've had an issue with styes four years! And all the eye doctors tell me to do is wash with baby shampoo which doesn't work at all. I started using doctor Bonner's peppermint soap. Which burns the hell out of my eyes, however when I use it regularly I don't get styes. Thank you so much for this video! No one has ever told me I had dirty gunked up eyelids. I'm assuming that's what my problem is. I don't wear makeup anymore. And that hasn't helped at all
Dr. Bonner's makes an Unscented version which may be far more comfortable for you. I use the Peppermint also, but for a body wash, since I'm very 'allergic' to fragrances (which are just toxic synthetic chemicals). That way, since they use REAL mint, I can enjoy smelling nice without causing myself asthma attacks and seizures.
I have to put eye drops in my eyes for cataracts. One of the side affects is unusual eye lash growth. Got eyelashes all over the place! Saves me a lot on mascara but the cataracts suck! Gotta have that surgery I can't see to drive at night so it's time for eye surgery I thought I couldn't see cause all my lashes blowin in the wind! Thank you for your video new sub here! Taking care of our eyeballs is so very important. Learning as I go 👍🦋🦋🦋🦋
I think you mean glaucoma. (There's no eyedrops for cataracts.) The glaucoma eyedrop is what causes eyelashes to grow. That's why they turned it into a eyelash growth treatment called Latisse. Now you probably still have cataracts also which is why you can't see to drive at night.
I bought the nulids device based on your advice which I value a lot and I was disappointed. It cleans the lids really good but for the price it should be a waterproof device which it’s not. My device malfunctioned in less than 6 months. Thankfully they sent out a replacement device.
My concern with wiping the eyes is that the skin around them is very sensitive and delicate. Aren’t we creating wrinkles and other issues when we scrub our eyes to get the dead skin cells loosened?
Thank you doc- been suffering from dry eyes for years and it really impacts my life. I will have to become vigilant at cleaning my eyes as I am one who is guilty for using liner in my waterline. Ugh. Amazing content. Blessings
One eye doctor gave me a Rx, which helped. Another refused to, and wanted to plug my tear ducts instead. I declined. No one suggested a cleansing regimen. I figured that out for myself. Thank you for the PSA.
I've been dealing with this for 2 years, barely nothing works and the eye doctors don't seem to know more than me about Blepharitis. I can't believe that there isn't a cure for it, at least that is what I have been told... either way it is driving me nuts and it is affecting my daily life.
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks, I live in Scandinavia, Europe so our products might differ, but Viscotears eye drops, Blephaclean (wipes), Blephagel (similar to the wipes) and Blepha eyebag which you heat in the microwave, have it on for 10 min, and then do the massage that you mentioned in the video. When things get really bad then the eye doctor prescribe me something called Terracortril with Polymyxin B, which you are only allowed to use a few times a year, and after the use of it, which is 3 times a day for 2 weeks, then it basically gives you a relief for 2-3-4 weeks, but then it starts all over again. Frustrating to say the least. These products do help me get through the day but that's it.
Each morning when I'm making a cup of tea I keep a bowl with a washcloth in it nearby. To sterilize it I pour some of the leftover boiling water in the bowl on the washcloth. I let it cool enough to use on my face. I first wipe with it slowly around my eyes, then the rest of my face and neck. It has helped to prevent the eye problems I used to have like conjunctivitis. I love doing this every day,. Sometimes I follow with jojoba oil to moisturize. My 2 cents.
I've suffered from this since 79, constantly having to have Cysts cut and cleaned out, I was a frequent flyer at my local eye clinic in the local hospital. I put it down to driving a Bus, the air coming from the windscreen demisters is not going throw a Pollen Filter as it is in a car, so getting dust into my eyes constantly. Now I'm retired the symptoms have ceased completely, I did all the cleaning regimes but nothing worked.
I’ve been seeing eye doctors since the 9th grade (age 13) because of my astigmatism. I have also had 2 instances of ingrown eyelashes, have had corneal erosion for YEARS, have abnormal saccades from a Traumatic Brain Injury, and now have developed bad cataracts at age 63. Never once did a doctor mention washing my eyelids, although I think I do (poor memory due to TBI). So, seeing eye doctors for 50 years, not one has ever mentioned eyelid hygiene! That is wrong on several levels. Why don’t doctors talk about it?
Really good question. I know it is something I maybe don’t get a chance to talk to everyone about. It’s something I try to always mention when I see a problem. I think A big issue is that the profession is just starting to connect the diseases for the eyelids to inflammation and how to that impacts the ocular surface and even can play a role in things like recurrent corneal erosions.
When I worked at the VA, it seemed like everyone had a problem with it, and in a way it was normal at that point. And in that environment, the clinic is more concerned about people going blind or people needing surgery than normal routine maintenance eyelid hygiene.
I'd have to agree with Dr. Allen. I mention it when I see it but otherwise I generally don't mention it. Think about it this way: the doctor discusses what you have a problem with and/or things that you should know. The doctor doesn't have the time to discuss every possible issue that MAY develop to every single patient that comes in. If I did, exams would take twice as long and I couldn't see half the patients that I do now. Do yourself a favor and take some initiative in learning about taking care of your own body
@@Akira-jd2zr The problem with learning on your own is that there is a lot of misinformation on the internet. That it misinformation could cause serious injury to the eyes. Why not make a brochure with information and put it in your waiting room. At least you would be reaching some people that way.
@@DoctorEyeHealth How about making a small brochure and putting it in your waiting room. At least some patients would read it. It might spur a conversation during their exam, too.
I have recurring dry eye that I can keep under control if I do the things my doctor recommended every day. I drops, eyelid hygiene ... I use hydrochlorous acid on a cotton pad 1x a day ... and a heated eye mask. My mask is rechargeable, really makes a difference in how my eyes feel plus the warmth helps me fall asleep quicker! I love it.
My mother couldn't have her cataract removal operation until she'd ridded her eyelashes of blepharitis. She had to bathe them with boiled, cooled water and salt using cotton wool swabs, evening and morning. It must have worked as she had her operation. It was a big surprise to her as she washed her face daily and carefully removed all her eye makeup before sleeping. Thank you for this enlightening lecture.
Thank you Dr. Joseph for this valuable content. I have dry eye and my eyes usually look as the examples you show at the begginig of the video (despite the lubricating eye drops and some cleaning). Due to the cost of some of these cleaning products, I decided to try with povidone-iodine on my eyelids after some readings about it. I just wanted to share with you, that it helped me to reduce the reddishness of my eyelids and eyes. But I sttopped because it stings when applied and I could not find more studies related. I would appreciate your comments or a video about iodopovidone use. Especially for those who cannot afford some of these expensive products.
I'm using those wipes regularly now. My optician suggested baby shampoo but after watching this switched that out for the wipes. I also will dilute a little TTree oil in the palm of my hand and massage right into the corner of my closed eye.
I wish I'd found this video a year ago when this became a problem. I've used just about everything named (different brands) except for the tiny eye brush and other appliances except for a warming eye mask not shown which was okay/soothing (although I may splurge on the big gun appliance). Something else I tried was a harsh cleaning pad brand (name starts with a C) with MUCH tea tree oil (I suppose it's what made my eyes burn like FIRE... only used once, but the mites apparently hated it; now use on my face for rosacea). I recommend one with less irritating ingredients. I really like the non-irritating foam eyelid wash I use. A little tea tree oil is good & helpful though and not a problem. I also have used OTC lubricant eye drops when really uncomfortable and they help momentarily. At their worst, I've used a lubricant nighttime ointment. My ophthalmologist said she'd seen more of it with all the pandemic's mask wearing (hygiene issue I presume as an RN). As mentioned, I was diagnosed with rosacea (on my face & scalp... years ago). My doc said they could be related (but wouldn't the demodex varieties be different?). The intersection of dermatology and anything dealing with an orifice is something I hadn't considered since my ears got really itchy (before that, it was while working as a nurse in a women's clinic). Same body, different specialist details. WE'RE SO COMPLICATED! (...which means we know a lot more than we used to, so I'm here for it because that it only increasing at a rapid pace.)
Just changed to a new Optometrist who made me aware of this common but eye irritating problem. Many thanks for these excellent tips to Eye Care & Hygiene. Cheers from Michael. Australia.
Do you clean your eyelids and eyelashes regularly? What do you use?
Very Informative, From now I will
@@jeevanjoseph4289 Yey!!! Glad ou liked the video!
Use a clean washcloth on my eyes
Good question. Most Doctors want to push meds not prevent illness. The good ones tell info like this to keep people healthy
Same here. 36 years later and they tell me this NOW. No Doctor nor Optometrist ever told me this until now when I have eye issues. SMH
Right? I've had this issue for two years, seen around 5 doctors, and the dryeyes subteddit was the FIRST place I even heard about this.
Yeah, it should be like brushing your teeth. People should know!
I complained to my eye specialist that thought I had an eye infection from like my pillow. He
never responded to me about this though I brought it up repeatedly.
@@benbrown8258did he talk about floaters in a previous video? I am 63 and have floaters now in both eyes.
I'm appalled that NO eye doctors ever told me about this! I've been wearing glasses & seeing those docs for decades too. If anything I've been led to believe that it's best to leave eyelids alone unless makeup needs to be removed. (Mites?!? Oh no! 👀)

Do you wash your pillow? Heard they should be washed once a month.
You've been more helpful than my eye doc. She's good; you're better. The simple solutions you've given have helped me with my blepharitis. TY
Wow thank you!!!
I have had Blephritis since 2003. Flared up when I had tickets for a Dixie Chicks concert
Went to the concert in agony. Red sore eyes.
Next day saw eye doc and eye nurses told me Blephritis this is what you do
It was Boil water three times a day use cotton bud and water cooled but still warm
The warmth is important. Then clean eyelids bottom and top, also some eye drops
After 3 weeks I went back much better. I was then told. Clean eyelids twice a day
And given viscotears for dry eyes, so I have done this ever since. Had one flare up only
When I had some antibiotic eye drops then back on the Viscotears.
The eye test examiner says whatever you are doing keep on.
This is my experience and you only have to buy cotton buds and use a kettle twice a day
Egg cup full
Thank you for reading. Good luck all.
Castor oil someone mentioned or bhref gel gives instant relief but you need to repeat
I bought a kit on Amazon with the eyelid wipes and the spray and I use a lubricating drop and it's helped tremendously.
Could also be oxalates being dumped in your eyes during the night, in my case it only happens when I consume too many oxalates the day before.
Problem is most soaps tell you to keep AWAY from your eyes (for good reason, its irritating) not enough people are aware you can get gentle eye cleanser. I had to learn what works for me after developing ocular rosacea.
…so what worked for you?
Hi what face wash do you use please??
By any chance did u stumble to the eyelash solution? My have been falling out and the gap is very notorious:c
Sounds scary to put tree tea oil on your eyes, that stuff is very very strong. You are brave...lol

I am happy you covered this! I have been having terrible pain after my Eylea injections! Now they make sure to rinse my eyes after the injections, but often I have this sandy, gravelly feeling in my eyes that is disturbing! Usually lasting over 24 hrs.
Her face looked gross too.😮
I noticed when I first used a friend’s 10x magnifying mirror. 😮
@@DanteYewToobOld question, I realize, but for future readers; he had recommended OCuSOFT lid scrubs… there’s leave-on & wash-off available. I used for a couple of weeks until I saw total results.
Gonna try this. The ocusoft dont do much for the price. Thx!
I really appreciate your videos!!! I was told I have Dry Eye and to go buy lubricating eye drops. That's It! So glad to have found your channel to learn how to take better care of my eyes!
That was my experience. Why do so many eye doctors do little more than get you to buy more products?
I'm so grossed out but I needed to hear this.
My eye doctor also ignored how serious my dry eye problem is. Why are eye doctors like this so often??
Amazingly husband is just mow developing a blepharitis condition and now up pops your helpful video!

I wasn't able to wear eye makeup for the last 15 years because I couldn't see too put it on. Developed dry eye around 2016. Still not wearing eye makeup then. I just had cataract surgery.

Have you ever heard of people using DMSO (50/50 with distilled water) ? I have heard of people spraying it directly in the eyes and healing minor vision stuff. [This is used for healing and repair of muscles on race horses, dogs and atheletes.]
My eye doctor recommended a wipe with tea tree oil. They worked great but were expensive and hard to find. I found a glycerine bases tea tree oil soap at piping rock. I just use that to wash my face. Works just as well as the wipes.

Me too on the Avenova on all counts
I have oily skin, And I've been getting pimple like stuff in my lower eye lids, But thankfully it went away after washing my eyes with water and soap

I think Dr Bonner’s castile soap also comes in a version with tea tree oil. I used to use it years ago but it’s def concentrated and needs diluting.

I'm glad this was helpful! Thank you for the great suggestion.

Ugh
Hi. How are your eyes now please?😊
I'm so glad this was helpful! Thank you so much for sharing!
Great DX and even better Remedy💯
Thank You and Blessings Dr A!
Thank you for your recommendations.
I finally determined the reason why the posterior lenses of my glasses recurrently get an oily film on them. I need to clean my eyelashes and eyelids!
Glad I could help!
Is there an eye cream that contributes to cleaner eyelashes and eyelids? Or any cream that you can recommend for eye area in general?
I use 100% aloe vera juice that's drinkable. I put it in a small spray bottle, and spray my eyes once or twice a day. Never had a problem with infection.
For the people who want an affordable alternative to the expensive device in the video, I put hot pads on my eyes then use my VIBRATOR to massage my eyelids. It helps miraculously with my blepharitis.
OMG i do this too!!! I specifically bought one for this purpose and it helps so much!! Great minds think alike!!
Oh my god. Sounds germy no matter how well it’s cleaned. I use the back of my old Sonicare toothbrush
wait whats a hot pad?
😂😂😂
VIBRATOR yeah okay you're kidding right for REAL this is disgusting what the HELL
😵💫🤮😵💫🤢😵💫
USE a cotton rounds you can even find ORGANIC ones with warm to hot but not scalding hot and your CLEAN hands and the foaming tea tree wash is GREAT but your VIBRATOR come on what are you thinking this is NOT for your eyes 🥴👀😵💫👀🥴
@@1957esYeah but the end of your toothbrush might be germy as well ugh just use your clean hands massage the pad gently and let it sit there with the warm to hot water you don't need VIBRATION to get the job done
And the tea tree foaming wash is GREAT as well ALL you need is cotton rounds you can even buy ORGANIC ones warm to hot water and a good foaming eyelid wash and maybe some preservative free eye drops like the Systane brand and the Bosch and Lomb saline eye wash this is ALL good stuff to have on hand at the end of the day🌈👍🏻🌈
For blepharitis I use OcuSoft Lid Scub Plus and SkinSmart antimicrobial spray.
I prefer to stay away from chemicals. There are other ways of doing it without the need for chemicals.
Best video on dry eye. I have had chronic dry eye for many years.
Thank you for educating me on cleaning my eyelids. I’ve never paid attention to my eyelids and lashes.
Happy to help!
I now use the systain eye wipes.
don't you just wash your face with soap when you shower?
You need to check with your ophthalmologist before using some of the products mentioned here, such as the toothbrush-type device or the sonicare type device. If you have map/dot/fingerprint dystrophy, recurrent cornea erosions, ocular rosacea, etc. you could very easily injure yourself using these types of products. Stick to the basics in these cases, such as the lid cleaning sprays and wipes that your ophthalmologist recommends. Or, at the very least, check with your eye doctor/surgeon.
What about cotton ball with peroxide and water, then a loose cloth patch with castor oil, pretty natural stuff
Hi, Karen here, I wanted to thank you for these AMAZING tips ! I have a lot of allergies to dust and cats, the warm compresses have helped me, I’m going to get the products you mentioned for allergies today, the eye wipes, and the solutions you recommended!
Pataday is a great OTC allergy eyedrop
@@Akira-jd2zr yes I just got it yesterday 👍
Also Pataday can still be purchased by prescription, it was a LOT cheaper that way for me! As it is expensive over the counter ! Hope this helps some folks save some $$$
@@CrazyHorseFarm643 great idea!!
Wow over 30 years ago I had an eye doctor tell me I had blepharitis. I have been dealing with eye redness and irritation ever since. Not once since then has an eye Dr told me about cleaning my eye lids to reduce redness, inflammation and dry eyes. I hope this works.
It’s also a good idea to wash your pillowcases frequently.
This is a really good question and I’m prepping a video to cover this topic. Thank you and hopefully I will have something on this soon!
My eyes itch all the time. I have oil inside eyelids. How do I get relief for that?
@@lindalamb7512 Try some allergy eyedrops, even if you don't normally suffer from allergies, it may help
And that hasn't helped at all
Omg lol i use the same thing.... Its only thing doesnt irritate my eyes...
@@bonniemoerdyk9809 i luv the peppermint
@@valjean2036 ... me too!!
Warm compresses and lid massage may help to prevent/treat styes
@@Akira-jd2zr yes I was listening to Tom Jones and I know what I should of said the dam gloc
Yes...true. I use the wipes...also the warm mask then the eye drops restatis
Thank you doc- been suffering from dry eyes for years and it really impacts my life. I will have to become vigilant at cleaning my eyes as I am one who is guilty for using liner in my waterline. Ugh. Amazing content. Blessings
What's wrong with liner at the waterline? 😶
Sorry to hear you are having such difficulties! What all have you tried?
I have got to do something… my eyes are constantly red and irritated and lots of crust when I wake up.. thanks so much!
Great info, especially for us false eyelash/ extension wearers👍
Each morning when I'm making a cup of tea I keep a bowl with a washcloth in it nearby. To sterilize it I pour some of the leftover boiling water in the bowl on the washcloth. I let it cool enough to use on my face. I first wipe with it slowly around my eyes, then the rest of my face and neck. It has helped to prevent the eye problems I used to have like conjunctivitis. I love doing this every day,. Sometimes I follow with jojoba oil to moisturize. My 2 cents.
Thanks for all the advice. This is a very interesting video.

Thank you very much for your vid on this subject. I have ordered a product that you suggested. Grateful for your channel.
I love it.
What type of heated mask do you use if you don’t mind
Mine too...my doc just tells me hot pack and cold pack...my eyes look horrible and red right now...so dry. Ty doc gonna try some of these.🤔❤

Happy to help Jana! Thanks
Australia.
