I have a question how many minutes should I massage my eyes for? I'm supposed to do both eye massage and warm compresses but not sure how many minutes I massage my eyes for
I have been having a chalazion for last 2 months, its a recurrent one ocurred several years ago too, this time is in the upper lid , after watchin your videos I tried to use hot compresses from last two days, now there is a swelling at it hurts even more, is it normal or my infection has got worse?
Out of this 7min video I got a real solution to my dry eye problem. Better than the appointment with the eye doc who told me to use eye drops multiple times a day which only combats the symptoms not the cause. Thank you. You got yourself a subscriber.
After trying warm compress and *months* of Restasis dry eye drops, Dr. Allen’s seven minute video on massage (which none of my providers have ever mentioned) has given my eyes a glimmer of good-feeling and relief. Dr. Allen is a well-made man. I bet he and his staff make an eye•xellent team. 👓
I'm dealing with advanced eye dryness. Even though I went every year to my eye doctor, my problem wasn't caught early. I am now seeing an eye doctor who is treating me a lot as you are recommending but I am also picking up some very good tips from you. Thank you so very much! God Bless You.
I apologize for commenting so much but today my eyes felt their best in 6 yrs and it’s because of your videos! I learned I had dry eyes and other vision problems besides the exotropia I was being seen for from the vision therapist I demanded my ophthalmologist refer me to in 2018. I’ve spent yrs battling to be heard by optometrists and ophthalmologists. I had 20/20 or better vision until my 40s but could never see clearly with both eyes to read well and do many things people take for granted. The vision therapist said most eye doctors don’t have the diagnostic tools to test patients for vision disorders like mine. I learned to cope with the Exotropia but the discomfort of dry eyes was a battle as they got increasingly worse. Only 2 days of adding the eye massage to the list made a huge difference. Thank you for all the videos!!!
I have a stye, and I’ve been doing the warm compresses literally all day long. My eye dr mentioned lid massages today, so here I am to see how. Thanks so much!!
Excellent video! I am recovering from an eye infection precipitated by a clogged oil gland that actually ruptured. My opthalmologist said to do the warm compresses twice a day during recovery, then once every other day going forward. He said it's good hygiene, just like brushing your teeth on a regular basis. He didn't say anything about the eyelid massage, but I will probably incorporate that going forward. I have been suffering with dry eyes at night since March 2020.Thanks for the demonstration!
Thank you very much Doctor. I wish you were in California, I would have been one of your patient, I have painful dry eyes as sometimes I get blood in the eyes. I never had my eye specialist explaining as goog as you do here. Thank you againI have learned about Hypo Chlor, I will get it right away. I am so grateful to have founf your video, You are a very good teacher.
I was DX with DED last year. The opthalmologist didn't explain how to maintain and improve the symptoms, unless I'm using a ridiculous amount of eye drops. Thank you for posting! Huge help.
Find a new doctor - that helps. I've been to 8 eye doctors in the last year and a half. The only doctors I found truly helpful were the ones I searched for and asked about online. #6 is my regular doctor and he's very good but #8 is the best one I've been to. She's in a different country so I can't go to her all the time.
In Canada, we have to wait for our healthcare, sometimes more than 1 year. So, we are constantly looking for treatments we can do by ourselves. Thank you for this helpful video.
I have a painful stye. Followed recommended procedures... used heating pad for 5 to 10 min. Then used a Qtip and gently massaged affected area and sure enough I got some out...not all, but not as painful anymore. And now it seems to be draining on its own.

Thanks so much for you videos and tips this is so helpful! I was diagnosed with MGD a few months ago and despite going for regular eye exams my eye dr did not catch this early. Since doing the eye compress/massage and Occu eye wash my eyes have actually become more irritated and red so not sure if I was using too much pressure. Anyway hoping your tips on how to massage the lids will help. Thanks again! Oh and side note I am a 55 yr old female who used make up and eyeliner since I was a teen.
Great video, thank you. You've answered something that was puzzling me - ie, why my vision often seems blurred following this process. Understand it could either be the oils going into my eyes or my cornea changing shape temporarily. In that case, I guess it makes sense to avoid doing this before driving etc.
I wake up in the morning and first thing I look at is the alarm ⏰ and my eye see it with a blur but not my right just my left .it's itchy and blurry so I take my eye lid and very gently pull it over my bottom eye lid and like magic it's clear for awhile.very temporary fix.but it's like my tear ducts are blocked.well I did this last night and I'm verry happy to say I woke up to a whole lot of less blur vision .thank you Doctor Joseph Allen.
Do you suggest this for kids? This happens very often to our now 7 year old. His pediatrician recommends warm compresses with rice in a sock. That never works. We go back and she then writes a prescription for a gel that goes into his lid. I'd rather have him live with the stye until he can drive himself to the doctor than to put a gel into his eyelid again!
ugh.. had a stye almost two years ago.. it only lasted about a week, but my eyelid still droops slightly and that eye occasionally tears up.. so annoying!!! I do suffer from very dry eyes in the mornings, so I will try this.. I hate that my eyes look uneven now 😭 thanks!
Omg this stretching my skin is gona have me so dang wrinkled. I'm sad and torn. Either suffer from dry eye or age so much faster than I want. I dont care how superficial it sounds or who judges me. I absolutely care about how I look & I'm really discouraged at this point!
I had dry eyes for 2 yrs and cant seem to get rid of them. I tried all kinds of eye drops over the counter and prescription drops. My eyes water all day long and have blurred vision !
My 8 year old son has what i thought was millia on the eye lid.. top and bottom.. with dryness around the eye... we going to try this and see if there is improvemnt to his condition
Thanks so much for this informative video. Very detailed demonstration. What duration should the massage be done, i.e. every day for two weeks, three weeks, etc.? How will I know if the glands are fully unblocked? Does this condition ever get resolved through this treatment, or is it here to stay? I didn't even have any symptoms (dry or watery eyes, itchiness), I just went to my opthamologist for a puffy eyelid and was told I had dry eye.
So it sounds like dry eye is the same as Blepharis. I am SUFFERING from what my eye dr. Is saying is Blepharis. My eyes have been watering for as long as I can remember. I do use your type of heating pads. I will try this procedure tonight. Thank you for your videos.
If I clean my hands, is it OK to use my thumb and forefinger to pinch the gland? This seems far better for expressing clogged oils than applying pressure from only the outside. It also seems like it would eliminate any potential pressure on the eyes themselves. If this idea has merit, but has risks, what are they and how risky? My 2 guesses are that the finger might still introduce infection even if cleaned. The other risk might be to somehow squeeze too hard and damage the gland. Any thoughts?
Any recommendations for a lubricant or lotion I can use while massaging my eyelids? My fingers are dry and I feel like I am going to irritate my eyelid skin by the repetitive massaging.
Wow Thanks Doc. I never heard before some of the things you mention such as the pressure in the eye from pressing on it and glaucoma. What are your thoughts on NuLids the FDA approved device that you run over your eyelid margin?! I've considered purchasing it but the price is hefty at $320!
Great information! I had stye 3 months ago it took awhile to get better but left a little cyst in the bottom lid. I’m wondering if I should see a doctor or continue with my eyes massage?

Can you do a video explaining Pellucid Marginal Degeneration? Just found out about that today....

Same here! I also appreciate the words of caution he gave, and the explanation of why my vision is actually worse for a bit afterwards.

This is unbelievably helpful. Proper explanation and actually doing what you are teaching (others just “pretend” to massage the eyelid). Very hepful
I love this - my eyes always feel immediately "cooler" when I do this - you can feel the oil being released and it's HEAVEN!!!
Anyone else watching this video with one eye closed? 😜

Can the oil ball up and be excreted. I woke up with a rice sized material in my inner eye with a lot of tearing. It was a firm matter.
The oil does play a role in the gunk that forms in the corner of the eye when you wake up.
