Tara, the song and video is Tolkien/Lord of the Rings exclusively. It first appeared as a poem in the Hobbit book and was sung by the character Thorin. The original composition can be heard in the first Hobbit film where the dwarves sing it. This is what Geoff has brilliantly based his version on - both video and song interpretation. The song depicts The Lonely Mountain, the home of Thorin and his dwarven companions before they were exiled years before by the arrival of a powerful and evil dragon. It’s a reminiscence of their home and their vow to reclaim it from the dragon. Great reaction
The song is from JRR Tolkien's the Hobbit, it is a song of dwarves driven from their mountain homeland, the fire that is red and flaming spread was a dragon attack, Peter Jackson's live action movie has a fantastic rendition with different singers but Castellucci is spot on with this video. Thank you Tara for reacting to one of my all time favorite parts to my all time favorite book.
This is the first of three songs that, for me, are "the Tolkien Trilogy". It's from "The Hobbit - An unexpected journey". Next comes "I see fire", from "The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug", and if you were blown away by this one, wait 'til you watch THAT one... 😁. Third and last comes the "Song of Durin", which is from the Lord of the Rings BOOK, it doesn't appear in the movies. Same Dwarves in all three, plus one in the Song of Durin. Oh, those voices... ❤❤❤ It would help if you knew the story they tell though, you could appreciate them more, I think. 🙂 I look forward to watching you react to the other two... 😁 See you next time!
I've watched your interview with Geoff several times. With his solo work, he does the arrangements, plays all of the instrumentation on a keyboard with an app I can't remember. He also does the camera work (unless he needs a steadicam), brings in a makeup artist when he has to look less like himself. Eli Jacobsen, from Voiceplay, frequently does the lighting for him. He often uses Pattycake Productions studio as he did here, owned by Layne Stein, VPs beatboxer and Tony Wakim, former baritone with VP.
#2 - I See Fire (same set of Geoff and his clones) is from the Desolation of Smaug (the Hobbit). When that's done, he does a poem in song form (Lord of the Rings) with Gimli as the only living person who is Song of Durin but the four in #1 and #2 make their presence known. All are beautiful.
Love it! Thank you for this reaction...I'll always be here for VoicePlay or Geoff solo reactions. The characters from The Hobbit he is portraying are Thorin, Fili, Kili, and Bofur. They appear in all three of the songs related to Tolkien's Middle Earth that he has released so far. They are all impressive. We get a couple of moments of tenor solos in the next two ("I See Fire" and "Song of Durin") and the characters pass the solos between them. "Song of Durin" adds a new dwarf, Gimli, from The Lord of the Rings books, while bringing back the ghosts of the characters from The Hobbit (so five Geoffs in that one). Since you mentioned Game of Thrones, have you reacted to Geoff's "The Rains of Castamere?" It's elaborate (in costume) like his Middle Earth covers. Geoff's impressive talents aren't limited to his vocals...You are correct, he does his solo projects from start to finish, from arrangement to video editing with only the final audio mix always going to Ed Boyer. He does use a makeup artist for elaborate videos like this one. Eli frequently does the lighting for him. Layne or someone else runs the Steadicam if one is being used. If it's fixed cameras, it's Geoff and Kathy. So cool!
I highly recommend you check out Geoff Castellucci's cover of "Blackbird" by the Beatles, as well as VoicePlay's cover of "Enemy" by Imagine Dragons (from the Arcane TV series). Both of them are phenomenal showcases of Geoff's range.
"I wanna go that low". Judging by your reaction... 😏 😉 No but seriously: i had a very similar reaction and was flabbergasted (in a good way). I wasn't expecting something this... impressive! A true masterpiece.
I believe this remains his most-viewed video. But I much prefer his "I See Fire" video featuring this same four characters, because to me it's much more beautiful and emotional, would be great if you could react to that also.
Among other things, Geoff has instructional videos on his website about how he arranges performancs, and how to sing low and subharmonics, and coping with his wife's hearing loss. As I understand it, he has names for the group..Geoff, Jeff, Jef, and Darrell. He has covered a lot of deep bass songs, but he has also done Blackbird by the Beatles, in which he plays the piano, and I thnk, sweeps up the studio when he's done. Buckle up Tara, and enjoy the ride!
As well as "I See Fire", there is "Song of Durin" with the same dwarvish Geoff's. Also, Geoff just released his cover of Jim Croce's "You Don't Mess Around With Jim". A really cool cover of Jim's epic song by five identical Geoff's. 🔥
Geoff frequently does four or five Geoffs in his video. This one is a powerful introduction to his dwarves, but I See Fire and Song of Durin are... honestly even more emotionally powerful!
C#1 is pretty much his anytime/anywhere bottom, but he's been down to B0 a couple times. And he can go up into higher tennor range without stress or quality loss.
Geoff has a huge vocal range. He's in the group Voiceplay (also on you-tube, he's a founding member) and they cover "Oogie Boogie's Song" from "Nightmare Before Christmas". He's lead singer on that and shows off his range and skill with it in that. Especially at the end. Watch the last 10-20 seconds all the way through the first time to hear/feel it properly. It's tempting to freak out over the high belt, but that's just the start of it. Wait for "boo".
Yes very familiar with VoicePlay and have done reactions of them including the one you mentioned: ua-cam.com/video/BK-nzDZEzlA/v-deo.htmlsi=_FRSH0TLcgnSxeKh
@@Tarasimonstudios Odd, I checked, but yesterday you-tube didn't have your channel going back more than a few months on the 'videos' page. Thanks for letting me know.
The fact he can pull off all four voices is impressive. Gosh! I remember attempting this song and hitting the notes right. However, sustaining the low notes was an extremely demanding challenge and transitioning from my lowest to chest for the 2nd time in my singing memories became tiresome.
This was a couple of years ago, though, and he has improved since (believe it or not). I think you are accurate about Plate Tectonics; his lows truly are subterranean and the Dwarves just keep digging deeper. :D
There was a recent performance on ASAP by Jona Viray (it's on UA-cam) of *Five Years by Sugar Hiccup* , a song from 1995 in the Philippines. It is a wordless song except for one line, and the first half is sung in low chanting intonations that makes me wonder if Game of Thrones got the idea for its melodies from that song, which was also influenced by The Cocteau Twins, a Scottish rock band from the 80s and 90s. You should check out *Five Years by Jona Viray* . It really shows off her range, from the low parts to the stratosphere at the end.
I sing along with Jeoff in this song and match him note for note. I actually sit this song and “House of the Rising Sun” as my warm up songs. Learning and putting in the work to be able to get that low is hard! But once you can singing in subharmonics feels most natural and easy. To sing low it goes in steps. The way I think of it is your vocal boards are like 2fruit roll ups that run down each side of your throat. The top 1” layer of vocal cords (closest to center of the throat)are “separated”from the sheet like guitar strings. I order to get lower you have to push your lowest not over and over trying to get just a little lower. It seems like it will never happen the after about 3 weeks of practicing hours a day all of a sudden it feels like another thicker string separates from the sheet and all of a sudden it’s easy to hit the next lower note- practice and repeat
You should check out the rest of Geoff's Tolkien Trilogy. The next one is "I See Fire" followed by "The Song of Durin". They somehow get progressively better.
Tara Answering your question: does Geoff takes something after he hits those subharmonics? Geoff explains on his channel on how to take care of vocals even hitting those notes as he would do for high notes. Geoff sort of gives a lesson of singing subharmonics.

It amazes ne rhat even after all these years we still aren't used to his subharmonics
And only one subharmonic in the melody line of this one (the first G1). Ironically, of the three, it's the one that stands out the least.
