Tara when you interviewed Geoff Castellucci he mentioned the song VALHALLA CALLING and I think you should react to that song because it's extremely powerful!
I am a little different with how I view Geoff: the depth of his glottal onsets scooped upwards into a clean note still within the bass register, that tells us he is a bass, but he has a chest voice that is good to B4 (like a low tenor), while having a decent head voice to cover high tenor. He is a standard bass, who has a freakishly high chest range and head voice.
I feel like Geoff fits into the low bass category. Not the lowest of the low, but lower than a standard bass IMO. At least at the age that he is now. Maybe 10 years ago he was an average bass, range wise, but with time his voice has filled out to a point that his A1's and Bb1's sound quite nice in morning voice and he can sing melody lines in that range with ease. But I think his vocal cords are large enough that he can stretch them to reach about 3 singable octaves in chest most days in the studio.
@@Stan_S_Stanman, in reality, if you took a true low bass (of which I am) and put them on a mic, they can hit notes WAY, WAY deeper. In a choir, I am good to about A1. But on mic, B0 is my lowest chest-fry note, E0 is my lowest subharmonic, and G -2 is my lowest fry note. Despite Geoff's own definition of being a baritone with a bass range, that is 100% false; even his speaking voice falls into bass territory with ease. I would put Geoff just below a lyric bass. He is almost like a basso cantante, but with both upper and lower extensions. His chest voice in the 3rd octave has that power of a basso cantante.
@@johndeeregreen4592 I'm hesitant to label Geoff with a classical fach, as that's not the type of music he sings. And obviously I'm not counting oktavists. Since Geoff sings on mic, in a pop acapella setting, it's more than fair to call him a low bass IMO, because his range in that context is lower than an average bass' by about 2 or 3 notes. Another bass who comes to mind is Elliot Robinson, who has a lower chest range on mic than Geoff by about 4 or 5 notes. I would consider him a very low bass in the type of music that he sings.
@@Stan_S_Stanman, the lines have been blurred enough, to where even I go what the Fach? Many forms of music have mic'd vocalists, where it was traditionally acoustic. So now it opens up roles for people who wouldn't normally be able to fit within that Fach. On a good day off-mic, I can hang with all but the best basso profundos, but on a mic, I am right there with the Oktavists. Even with Oktavists, there are three different types: those who can acoustically sing down to A1 (to double baritone lines), those who can go down to F1 (to double bass-baritone lines), and there are those who can go even lower to double the bass lines... the last being EXTREMELY rare-such as Mikhail Zlatopolsky. But, when mic'd, this is possible for people like Geoff and myself.
I have seen several of your reactions to Goeff Castellucci’s solos. I know you like how low he get and i found one i would like to see your reaction to. His range is awesome this one too. You need to listen and react to UNSHAKEN. I think this will be another favorite.
@@Tarasimonstudios Surprised you're reacting to his old videos. The new ones blow the old ones out of the water. He went from amazing, to ridiculously good.
I totally agree. Geoff is the male version of Mariah Carey. He has a wide range and it's amazing how easily he transitions from low notes to high notes and from high notes to low notes.
With XMas around the corner I thought I would recommend a hymn. Leah McFall - Silent Night (Live) It’s a 7 year old UA-cam video - Leah was one of those reality TV artists who never broke through. Even if you don’t review it, it’s well worth a listen.
I love Geoff!!! I don’t know if you saw my recent comment on one of your older videos. I would love to see you do a reaction to “Life in 3D.” my recent obsession is their version of “When the Party’s Over.” All of their work is amazing though!
@@Tarasimonstudios I’m sorry I missed your reaction to that one. It is only because I respect your work so greatly that I hope to see your thoughts on my current favorite musicians. Thank you for providing the link.
As far as I understand Geoff tends to prefer a more closed mouth shape with his vowels because it helps with keeping smoother/ more consistent flow of sound rather than the depth of a note.
Those notes are super hard even if your a bad singer . But I think he's an alto or median naturally witch makes those notes that much harder! Bbb WoW 🎉
The fact that he looks like he was ripped off the cover of a Harlequin romance will do nothing to impede his career. As this is Halloween month, now would be a good time to get into Geoff's day job with the theater kids of acapella, Voiceplay. They have done most if not all of the songs of Nightmare before Christmas, and their troll and goblin version of Hall of the Mountian King and sequel Classical Chaos are both very interesting.
I went thru your videos and I really wanted to see your reaction to Johnny Cash Hurt (listened to a few from other reviewers)...I'm kinda surprised you havent done that yet. I hope you see this.
The one and only thing about Geoff’s arrangement that bothers me is where he changed the lyric that I’ve always heard as “the only thing a gambler needs” to “the one and only thing a gambler needs” because it’s followed by two things: a suitcase and a trunk.
I wish I could sing like Geoff or like Tim Foust from Home Free, im a baritone with a lower bottom range than most baritones ive heard. I like singing crooner style songs (Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Bublé & Louis Prima) and depending on the key of the song I can usually hit the "high" notes.. I'm un-trained but i grew up singing "bass"/baritone in choir. I learned about shape notes thru learning gospel songs. But it seems like big band or swing is the easiest for me to sing... When i sing contemporary Christian music its easiest to sing in my lower register.. I feel like theres not a market for baritone singers.. Maybe I'm just stuck in the musical past lol.. Crooners and swing vocalists are my favorite. I'm not sure its possible but when i try to sing high like the contemporary Christian stuff I feel like my voice is gonna crack. Is it possible that I've expanded my range lower into bass territory but still can sing my normal baritone range?🤔 and I'm sorry if this all sounds totally random, I was just curious lol.
@@Sarah-l7t, that tends to be Geoff's lowest chest note on an average day (even though he can go as low as F1 on a great day in chest voice), so you'll hear him use Ab and A a lot.
I can't comment for Geoff obviously, but I can tell you how I do this, and I think it's the same technique Geoff uses here. Those extentions are all about sliding into your subharmoic register on that last note. Once you know how it's very easy, it's all about relaxation. It's like you say in your S.O.S. reaction to Dimash, it sounds really impressive, but it's like a vocal break. You don't have to work hard for it (actually, it's the opposite, if you have to work for your subharmonic note, you're going to fail). In the word sun, he could pick both U and the N to "strech". The only difference is where you place the note, the N being nasal will be much more forward. That's just a matter of singing the N as a subharmonic note. If he chose the U, it would sound like his subharmonic on the word chain, which is placed more in the middle.
