I arranged it for a school band many years ago and thought I did an okay job... Geoff did something I never thought possible. So I concur on this being award worthy.
If you were a patron you would be able to see how they pull their video shoots together in one day, plus all the shenanigans that go on behind-the-scenes. Say hello to Violayne. VoicePlay is going to be singing with Chicago in Atlantic City on the 17th and 18th of this month.
I am very old, missed Metallica altogether. Didn't matter, this is just wonderful! You asked about practice. They each record their parts in their home studios, send it back to the arranger, he does the editing and first mix. Sends it back out to them if there are changes that need to be made, mixes it, sends it to Ed Boyer for the final mix. Then they record the video, singing with (or sometimes lip syncing with) the final recording. They are amazing. I will always be here when you react to Voiceplay and Geoff. Love your reaction and analysis!
Amazing arrangement. And Geoff's low notes and subharmonics are insane. Rumbles. It's so crazy. If you've ever been in a resonant space with someone with a true basso profundo like Geoff, the moment they even talk it feels like the walls are shaking. It's quite remarkable.
The dark appearance of this is a nod to the fact that the song came off Metallica's Black Album. Geoff and Layne have been friends since middle school but every new member they take into VoicePlay has to be very talented. Not only good singers but also with acting skills, and the ability to fit into the madness and creativity that is VoicePlay.
Excellent reaction - this was done brilliantly on all fronts. Of what I have seen of Voiceplay (which is quite a bit) this is a candidate for their masterpiece.
Hehe, next time you go back and watch this again, make sure to keep an eye on "VioLayne" and see how the instrument winds up in his hands :) Wonderful reaction!
Chicago heard about VoicePlay doing this and checked it out. They contacted VP and invited them join them on stage for their Chicago and Friends concert Nov 17 and 18 last year. The stage manager had Eli in his sights and wanted to know where they wanted to have the drum kit placed. Eli just looked at him and pointed a finger to Layne, saying, "He's it." Chicago's trumpet player was sitting next to Geoff watching him and you could it on his face, "How does he do that?" Huldra Draco was at that concert and used her phone to get some video of them sing with Chicago. You can find it here on UA-cam.
That was great! They have really stepped up their arrangements. Just when you think they can't get any better they prove you wrong. Thanks for posting!
Part of VoicePlay's repertoire of talents is making me like their covers when I don't care for the original. Metalli-who? But I love this video. Yes, Geoff deserves an Emmy for his arrangement.
I love how excited and just like "ahh- what?" you get when Geoff rattles our bones. Personally I just get *maaaaad* tingles when I have them in my headphones.
I was very happy to see you react to this amazing performance. A cappella does METAL??? Oh yeah... it's VoicePlay. Enough said. Great reaction. It was obvious in your facial expressions how much you really enjoyed this... even if you HADN'T said a word. But I'm glad you DID say stuff!!! 😉
Their usual method is for one person, usually Geoff (as here) or Layne, sometimes Eli, to create the arrangement. That person then records each part and sends those out to the members to record their own part. They do this in their own homes. These are sent back to the arranger who will possibly ask for some alterations or not, then edit the sound track together. They then come together to film it, singing along with the final soundtrack which looks more realistic than just lip syncing. That does take some rehearsing of course, to synchonise movements etc. Then the filmed parts are put together. It's a long process but they manage to produce one a month, with Geoff doing his own low bass covers, one a month.
I'm in shock and amazed at this insanely good vocal arrangement, it's so smooth, rich and velvety that it seems that they are drawing the lyrics with their mouths!
How does the worthy VoicePlay get awards for these spectacular acapella videos. They sure deserve it. I heard a lot of people say an acapella group couldn't do metal (Metallica). Wonder what they have to say about it now?
Hello Tara! Great version of the song and reaction :) Please do the reaction to Dimash - Battle of memories 2023 Music Gala in Macau. Dimash in pink...Greetings
Huge fan of this - was so excited when I saw you'd reacted to it! THANK YOU! (And I don't recall if you reacted to Dream On yet: if you haven't, you MUST. Brain-breakingly good.
Geoff (who arranged this song/video) apparently decided that when he wasn't actually singing lyrics, he wanted to pretend to be a bass guitar - and he succeeded!
At some point I started hearing Geoff’s subs as dragon purrs. LOL. Bone rattling but in a good way. And SUCH a thrill to see another appearance of VioLayne. They really needed to shred for that part and he killed it. Loved your reaction-that noise you made! LOL.
Fun fact I actually first heard a male vocalist sing whistle tones (the recording is from 1996) long before ever hearing Geoff sing a subharmonic. note, and there are many women who can sing subharmonics- including at least one VP fan (not me). 😊
Great reaction! This is absolutely one of their best. You truly need to check their Medley from "Wicked", Geoff arranged that one too. It is phenomenal!!!
I really don't like Metallica but the lyrics of this song is Stellar ! And I don't follow Voice Play a lot but this was just MASTERFUL !! EPIC! I really think this is Grammy worthy. Loved it and the arrangement was pure PERFECTION ! Thank you Tara. Love your breakdown and assessment.
Layne Steyn does a violin solo, and Bob Ross painted magnificent mountains with a putty knife. What ultimately counts is the end product. If you haven't done it yet, I would strongly recommend Voiceplay's take on Edvard Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Peer Gynt, with guest singer (Mezzo?) Elizabeth Garozzo. The thumbnails will give you a clue what you are in for.
I have noticed you have done a lot of reactions to Dimash And you have not heard of Diana Ankudinova, who is also Russian, and from the same music performance platform anyone that is a Dimash fan is also a Diana Ankudinova I would love to see you do a reaction of her. She is an amazing singer with an amazing background story she does a cover of can’t help falling in love by Elvis Presley. Would love to see you react to it react to it. Thanks and have a great day. I am also from Florida. Saint Augustine
VoicePlay has done some great ones recently that might need your reaction. "Creep" is very good featuring Anthony Gargiula. Their cover of "Hellfire" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame is another Geoff stars and goes LOW. "In the Air Tonight" (Phil Collins) is good as well. Also, "If I were a Rich Man/Girl" featuring Ashley Diane is fantastic.
Exceptional reaction!! So, how do we nominate or otherwise inform the Grammy committee about this version of Nothing Else Matters. How do we help to make that happen? Who out there knows how the process works? Without a doubt, VoicePlay deserves it!!
Who thought of Metallica and A Cappella, together, would be so AWESOME. Like Boyz 2 Men and A Cappella. That was AWESOME also. But until it actually happened, nobody thought the 2 would match. But they DID. Or should I say, DO. Great Post, Tara
Ever heard this one? If you like it you can find my comment and upvote. I'm hoping to get it enough attention for a reaction. Hellscore - For Whom the Bell Tolls (Metallica A Cappella cover) ua-cam.com/video/L9I9AP_QrMY/v-deo.html&pp=ygUPaGVsbHNjb3JlIGNob2ly
I have nothing against an a capella group occasionally using an instrument as an accent in the music so long as they play the instrument and show it, like Layne did here and Kevin does in Pentatonix. It's a little added spice to an already tasty treat!
You should check out Van Canto's cover of Master of Puppets. They're not completely a capella as they use an actual drum set, but it's still pretty fantastic!
Hi Tara, you should see "i'll die for the win of the Mountains", traditional song by Armenia, sung by Dimash. You will not regret it. This was a good video!
I think it is time for you to react to Dimash's fellow passenger on the spaceship that deposited them on this planet. Diana Ankudinova is a young (now 20) Russian singer who has the most unique, captivating, chill inducing voice on the planet. I suggest you get videos off her UA-cam channel to reduce copyright strike issues. She has an amazing backstory, as she was abandoned at a train station at the age of 3 with a broken collarbone, placed in an orphanage, and was so traumatized that she could not speak. They noticed her singing to cartoons, and used singing as a form of voice therapy. I wont go to much into her voice, will let you discover that. She gained a huge following on the internet with her performances of Wicked Game (age 15), Rechenka (14), Human (15), Crow (18), Blizzard (15), but I would start with her performing the Elvis classic (in her own original way) "Can't Help Falling in Love" on a Russian voice competition against some of Russia's most famous singers when she had just turned 18 (hint: She won). She has begun to put out her own music in the last few years. Best of luck.
I love this version. Another wonderful masterpiece il My heart will go on by Corvyx. Can you do the reaction? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee? I love you and your reactions. You are a genuine person
I always enjoy your reactions. Have you ever listened to Dan Vasc? He’s a singer on UA-cam and would love to hear your reaction to his rendition of Nessun Dorma.
Hi Tara! I'm a young Brazilian girl and I love watching your videos. I would like to know if you could teach me through a UA-cam video or a youtube shorts how to do a beautiful vibrato like yours, especially in chest voice, I'm a beginner, could you help me? I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS❤️❤️
Check out my tutorials. I’ve done a couple on how to find your vibrato. But remember, everyone’s vibrato is different which makes it perfectly unique to you.
As much respect and admiration i have for this group and this arrangement… You NEED to hear”Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Jacob Collier (featuring Yebba, John Legend and Tori Kelly) before you award any grammy nods… You’ll thank me later…
U need 2 checkout NINI IRIS she was on the VOICE last night doing Radiohead Karma Police and o OMG way better than the original... Think you'll like it!!!
Geoff 1000% deserves a Grammy for this arrangement. It is an actual masterpiece.
I concur!
Absolutely! This one is still my favorite (if I had to pick just one song by VP), because I think the arrangement here is special and extraordinary.
I arranged it for a school band many years ago and thought I did an okay job... Geoff did something I never thought possible. So I concur on this being award worthy.
I think MetallicA woud be proud of this cover. It is amazing, beautiful.
If you were a patron you would be able to see how they pull their video shoots together in one day, plus all the shenanigans that go on behind-the-scenes. Say hello to Violayne. VoicePlay is going to be singing with Chicago in Atlantic City on the 17th and 18th of this month.

It's been a while since you've reacted to VoicePlay! I'm excited that you're going to be reacting to them again.
Amazing arrangement. And Geoff's low notes and subharmonics are insane. Rumbles. It's so crazy. If you've ever been in a resonant space with someone with a true basso profundo like Geoff, the moment they even talk it feels like the walls are shaking. It's quite remarkable.
All of what VoicePlay does is amazing, but this is what I consider the pinnacle of their talents.
Yes grammy worthy and just an appetizer to the year they would make in covers we never knew we needed (except Hellfire. We knew needed that)
One of their best arrangements yet! Killed it

This is my absolutely favourite. Total masterpiece... where is that Grammy?!?! Thanks for the reaction...
Excellent reaction - this was done brilliantly on all fronts. Of what I have seen of Voiceplay (which is quite a bit) this is a candidate for their masterpiece.

Geoff, and his Fabulous "Man Whistle".

Она влюбилась в Джеффа и с нетерпением ожидает очередного subtone 😀😇👌👍
Yes. That is the correct response to a Geoff Bass bomb Tara. 😂
This is so amazing! I love these guys so much
"no-one's sticking out too much, everyone's perfectly blended... listen to Geoff's lower note at the end OH MY GOOOOOSHHHHH"
Absolutely Awesome ❤️🔥
Such outstanding harmony and great how each of their voices complement one another! Outstanding reaction Tara as usual!
He's like a human sub woofer! ❤
I think it was The Charismatic Voice that said he uses fog horn mode.
3:35 Ladies love when Geoff goes down there 😉
Part of VoicePlay's repertoire of talents is making me like their covers when I don't care for the original. Metalli-who? But I love this video. Yes, Geoff deserves an Emmy for his arrangement.

I get insanely maaaad tingles over Geoff, period...LOL! *Perfection!!*
Love this so much! You're one of my favourite youtubers! Keep doing what you're doing girl. Sending Love From Sydney, Australia.
4:25 Geoff is in his upper register singing ‘say’ before he drops.
They are just getting better and better
This is one of my favorite VoicePlay covers. So good!
Just wait until you watch and react to Voiceplay's cover of "Valhalla Calling" which also features your favorite student....J.None !

Hello Tara! Great version of the song and reaction :) Please do the reaction to Dimash - Battle of memories 2023 Music Gala in Macau. Dimash in pink...Greetings
More voiceplay please😊❤
You should check out their cover of Valhalla Calling... It is epic!
On VoicePlay videos often what you are hearing when the end text is scrolling is the karaoke track they make available to Patrons.
You're right--perfect vocals on a perfect arrangement.

About time…been waiting for you to do more of them…
I would 100% die if we get a collab from both Ptx and VoicePlay.
At some point I started hearing Geoff’s subs as dragon purrs. LOL. Bone rattling but in a good way. And SUCH a thrill to see another appearance of VioLayne. They really needed to shred for that part and he killed it.

Yeah, Wicked Medley is an absolute monster of an arrangement by Geoff, super complex and utterly fantastic.
Geoff literally makes your guts rumble.........just insane!!
Incredible arrangement and execution! 🤯🤯

Dive into Metallica lyrics and ignore the harsh tones. The lyrics are pure poetry put to heavy metal.
Epic !
Love your reactions !
👍👍👍💕😎🇸🇪
Love this arrangement. Thanks for checking it out.

Great reaction, Tara. I wasn't familiar with this song, but I love this!
Yesss. Nice reaction ❤
You really need to listen via a top quality headset to get everything, especially the left to right to left passages.

By far, by far my favorite version of this song!! Sorry Metallica. And I say that as a huge Metallica fan!
I don’t think I’ve heard them before but I have a bit of a bad memory so I’m not sure but I love them

Didn't know this could be done accapella. Wow! So good.
Creativity and big talent ❤ thanks Tara🎉
This group has gotten to the point of excellence! Have you reacted to their version of Creep? Just Beautiful! I don't really even like the song! ❤
Definitely one of VP's top ten. If you want more of VioLayne, check out "Warriors." There's an extra little surprise in there too...
You should check out Van Canto's cover of Master of Puppets. They're not completely a capella as they use an actual drum set, but it's still pretty fantastic!
