  • While the dwarves of the company of Thorin Oakenshield longed to return home to Erebor, a story of their tale to come was crafted. . . and with good company! Unfortunately, they did not have the deep vocals of Geoff Castellucci to warm their hearts. Oh how his voice rippling through Bag End would sound!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Geoff Castellucci performing "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold” for the first time.

Geoff, I don't think you know how much of a positive impact you have on many of us. I used to sing bass, and I sung well, I even sung acapella solos in a front of public, but my father laughed at me and called me names and it got me off of singing for many years. You brought me back and you gave me my passion for singing back. I will never be able to repay you for that, it's priceless. Thank you!

Who better to embody the primordial power of an ancient mountain than a man whose voice sounds like two tectonic plates rubbing together? The song also benefits from Geoff's gift for strong minimalist arrangement which gets a bit under-appreciated as people salivate over his vocal abilities. But, who better to salivate over such a voice than the Bob Ross of Bass, the Willy Wonka of Windpipes, the inimitable Battle Bard and Unicorn Goddess, Elizabeth Zharoff! Geoff is a pure beast, Paul. I am a bass singer and when I discovered him, I was blown away. He sings mostly in a thick baritone register, then drops down into low 2nd and higher 1st octave to remind you he is a true bass; followed by drops below A1 to remind you he is a contrabass. What you described at 14:00 was a basic throat bass/kargyraa, where both folds are utilized to produce a lower sum pitch. Subharmonics don't require the false chords as the true folds go "out of sync". They adopt a 3/2 relationship in terms of vibration(for the first subharmonic anyway) where one fold vibrates for example at 100hz and the second fold at 66hz and produce a sum pitch(33hz, a C0) one octave below the chest note, which in this case would be C1 or 66hz . This effect can be achieved multiple times, some can sing even 4 subharmonics "at the same time", but mainly you'll hear the fundamental and the lowest summed pitch as the most prominent sounds.
