Homemade Ice Rod Strike Indicators - DIY Ice Fishing Tackle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- What is an ice rod strike indicator? It is an indicator (also called a spring bobber) that is attached to the tip of a rod. It helps show tiny strikes of sluggish fish in winter. It is especially helpful on stiff rods that do not have sensitive tips. I have a very stiff rod and without a strike indicator, I miss most of the strikes. In this video, I'm making strike indicators I use during winter from everyday materials.

I don't comment much on here but you SIR are super creative! Thanks for sharing this!!
Appreciate your comment, always satisfying to hear warm words about my projects.
Really cool idea! BUT, there is no ice where I live, so I will try it on a Bream Buster! THANKS for a nicely made video!!!
It's a great idea. I'll add up some on my giant shrimp rods but with some mods, a larger tip for easy on the eye.
Not tie but tape it on rod tip to prevent bending. I'll try thin single strand wire next👍
Are you catching shrimp on a rod with a hook and line?
Great fishing hack thank You for putting the time and effort in to it. P.S. Love your videos.
My pleasure! Thank you for your comment!
Очень хорошо,большой ЛАЙК!👍👏
Excellent video!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great DIY video but, where do you find plastic straws nowadays in Canada? :) Thx for sharing nevertheless, keep it up!
I'm in the US and plastic straws are everywhere. I'm sure most Canadian fast food restaurants still have them. But instead you can make the second type that doesn't require straws. Those are quicker to make and are more robust. I don't make the type that requires straws anymore.
Good work my friend
Thank you, friend.
@@aseev my pleasure friend...
Good video. Ty mate.
Thanks mate, appreciate the encouragement, makes me want to do more stuff.
Thats amazing and very easy! I'm on it!
You're still helping people! Thank you from Northern Wisconsin!! Blessings 😁
You're welcome! And thank you for your comment.
Nice Idea for certain techniques, I mostly fish white fish with a 7 g weight with nymphs, the issue is that I need to lift and let sink the nymphs constantly so I guess this indicator will fall. Nonetheless great idea!
Next video.......do DIY LED Rod Strike Indicators
Interesting idea. Will see if I can come up with something.
Very good video and amazing idea!!! Thank you and good luck!
Спасибо, Владимир!
good jobe if you have another method like this for carp please share it
I usually don't have tackle sensitivity issues when carp fishing but something similar can be done by attaching wiper wire (stip of metal from inside rubber car wipers) which should greatly increase the sensitivity of a stiff car rod.
@@aseev thank you.
Very nice friend.
The Gospel of John, when you're ready.❤️
It's unlikely I'll ever be ready for any kind of cult.
@@aseev I agree...religion can be cult like. But, it's not about religion with Jesus...more than it's about a relationship with, Him.
You'll be very thankful, friend.
The Gospel of John, when you're ready.❤️
TY very much.
While they work, i'm not too found of the wire alternatives. It's nit just the icing, but st 62yo, the less visible and less manageable nature of the occasional tangles. A flat strip seems to resist the tangle's strands get as tiny or tight.
Now, there are situations in softwater season where the bites are likewise hyper- light, and not as easy to detect even with the well balanced slip floats i've tried to date. Fot example, right now my lake has a majir 'bloom' of Daphnia (a larger zooplaktor), and not only are the panfish STUFFED with it, it is effectively limitless,
so there's no need for competitive feeding (which often produces solid, obvious thumps).
The trouble is, unlike ice fishing in a shelter or out on the milder, less windy days, whrn fishing from a dock, kayak, or boat. The very short palm rod forces me to get close to the edge, and in shallower water especially, the fish can become edgy and move off when they view me in silhouette. A longer rod (say, 3.5 to 4.5ft) would alloe me to keep closer to the center of the floating docks, as well as fish both sides at a greater effective range.
Likewise, our sungish are quite large and fussy about what they find acceptable. Tiny offerings reign, and those only balance with very thin lines.
Thr fish likewise don't care for a tiny jig making big moves,
so i put the rod in an easy to free holder (a freeous metal washer imbedded in a cirk rod handle, which holds securely to a small neodium magnet on the rod stand), and often as not just tap the butt of the rod, rather than try to quiver such a long tip with increasingly tremorous hands.
i feel i need the cushion of both a rod and a straightline or fly reel
Any thoughts on how i might use and optimize adding such sensitive indicators to more mid-length rods?
If you still planing to use floats - the floats will be absorbing most of the strikes and these indicators won't be of any help. These strike indicators are good when the line is stretched between the hook/weight and the indicator, and the tighter the tension - the more sensitive the setup is. Although sunfish, where I live, pulls like marlins most of the time, there were a few times when they were finicky and I was missing bites because my float wasn't sensitive enough.
Slip bobbers by default have higher buoyancy and therefore less sensitive. I think a better solution will be a specialty high-sensitivity float. They are usually long and skinny, like a stick, and they indicate the slightest bites.
Very good idea, you are creative. This method is feeder rod fishing, but this is much cheaper, than buying feeder rods.👍👏
Thanks. This is a standard practice in ice fishing. I just use common materials for it.
good idea
a very brilliant idea to make fishing rods more sensitive, very inspiring my brother
Glad you enjoyed it.

What is the pink jig at min 5:43, and how do I make them?
Those are store-bought. Although I thought of making a similar kind. I may make a video about that.
@aseev what do they call them?
Nice tip !
Thank you very much.
Great video and explaining the jig weight at the end.
Thank you, Adam. Glad it was helpful.
I’d buy you a beer for sharing this tip! Thanks for sharing!
Any time!
In my area, we use that kind of sensor since over 20 years ago, made from a kind of tiny steel called "entul", from used car wiper, where there is a metal/steel inside the rubber plate of the wiper.
There are many types of materials used for making these indicators. My father-in-law told me that many many decades ago anglers even used animal hair and bristles to make these. Thank you for the tip about the metal strips. I will try it out if I find an old wipe.
Jos sependapat om 👌👍bahkan pemancing sejati ngk btuh sensor, asal dlm keadaan ngk gelap liat ujung joran tau mna air mna sampah mna ikan..
Hanafi, be honest. Have you ever ice fished before when it was -30C degrees? The tip of your rod wouldn't move...
Very nice work Thanksyou.
You're very creative, I'm waiting for your next video ... Don't forget to come to Indonesia, friend

Very Cool! I'm going to try this right now...
Don't use a dull knife with a broken point as I do in this video and you'll be able to accomplish all of this much faster!
@@aseev This was going to be my comment: Dull knives are dangerous to use! That being said, this looks fun. The hole punch is a great idea! Thank you.
@@glennkrzeminski7539 Thank you for your comment. X-Acto knife is one of my main tools and I run through blades quickly. That's was my last one, it's time to order.

Just put little bell on your tacle. Like cat bel. when the bell ringing n ringing that mean hook up
That won't work for ice fishing when you need to jig constantly - the bell will ring all the time.
thank you very much this is very ingenious.
You're welcome, hope this helps you catch more fish.

does the plastic get ice build up?
The one with the circle doesn't, with the tube maybe a bit, way way less than the store-bought ones with long metal springs. One of the reasons I've started making them.
nice good..simple but brilliantt

the best ones are titanium wire, very durable 🐟
Agree that a titanium wire would make a great spring-bobber but unfortunately titanium wire is not always lying around ones house.

I respect your idea, but the real fishing maniac know when the rods is strike from fish, without ringing bell or anything on the rods..
Often times in winter fish doesn't strike at all. It just swallows the hook and stays motionless in the same spot. When it is -30C and colder, your rod and line is so stiff that even if there are strikes they aren't noticeable without a very sensitive indicator.
@@aseev yes, with very big winter glove you cannot feel the rod and visual indicator are needed.
Actually feederrods have that system build in, so your comment is stupid and way off.
If that were true then the Russian ice fishing team wouldn't use these rods and indicators. They dominate in the competitions.
This type of plastic indicators is widely used in Russia. Including professional ice fishing teams.
