Hey everybody, after you watch this you might want to check out my new Hooksetter/IFishPro All-in-one device. That video is linked here: ua-cam.com/video/CdLciitIrYY/v-deo.html
I've did a lot of diy jaw jackers and that's one of the best it's so cheap and simple u don't hafta mess with triggers really and the fact that it bangs when u get a fish is awesome I mean some days the noise might hurt you but for chasing more agro fish amazing
I just made three of these with my two sons! We will be trying them out tomorrow as school is cancelled due to cold temperatures. -47celcius with the wind chill. Thank you so much for this idea.
Ok, we went out today instead of yesterday. It was too cold yesterday. This tutorial is legit! We cleaned up on perch today! We used both an ultra light and light action rod and they both hooked the top of the mouth perfectly. No missed fish at all. Thank you again! This will be my go to deadstick now!
thanks for making this video. I made five and used them last weekend and they worked amazing. I like the sound of the mouse trap snapping which grabs one's attention. The hook setter hooked every trout that set it off. Caught my Idaho trout limit in an hour and a half, trout were between 17" to 22".
@@BackroadsAngling update, my two other ice fishing buddies really liked the hook setter and asked me to make some for them. Because Idaho allows the use of five poles and anticipating confusion of mouse traps snapping. I combine your Tip-up and hook setter designs with some modifications. The combo work like a charm. Thank you once again for your videos.
Done made 2 this morning, Already have two jawjackers love them. But at 65:00 bucks I got mine when they 35:00 8 years ago or so. harder to set then j/j . But be the smarts guy on the lake. PRICELESS!!!!!!
Great do it yourself for less! I got creative also and made my own before I saw this. Comparable in design using the tension bar,too bard to set. You solved my issue with the nail! Nice work! You should patent, sell and put money in your pocket too! It works! Thanks so much! Keep em coming!
Thanks, I think I had a similar experience as you. I started out connecting the rod to the trigger bar but it took too much force to set it off so I started using the nail to take some of the force off the trigger bar. I've had some discussions with some patent experts and I've gone back and forth on patenting it. It costs a lot of money and I feel like people already love the Jaw Jacker. I have some variations I'm working on that could make this device more versatile. If they work out I think that could be worth trying for a patent.
Well...I know what I’ll be doing on this cold winters night. Just like you I’ll be in the basement making me a jaw jacker. Love this kind of stuff...thanks for sharing. Now off to the hardware store for a mousetrap.
Thanks for the tutorial, this helped a lot. I had made one using the coat hanger trigger, but it often wasn't sensitive enough for some of the finicky trout I've been fishing for. The mouse trap really seemed to make a difference though, so hopefully I can get some more hookups now. Keep up the great work!
I actually had it smack me in the face when I was first playing around trying to make it work. It hurt about as bad as you might expect. I should have learned to keep my distance but I guess not. Thanks for watching!
I would suggest a small finish nail for your pole loop. Have you experimented with a piece of heavy test fish line and a snap swivel to hold the pole tip under the kill bar. I think then you could just unclip the swivel from the pole eye when you wanted to remove the loop.
I watched your DIY iFish Pro video and was thinking it would be great to make it into a combo jaw-jacker for different bites, that way you can bring one thing out with you and have both. It seems like the layout would be the main thing to figure out.
Yes I was thinking the same thing. My goal is to make one device that can be either iFishPro or Jaw Jacker. They are so similar it seems very doable. I have been testing a few ideas and they are close but not quite right. I will give an update once I get something that I'm happy with. Thanks for watching!
Caught 2 perch. One was decent and the other small but theyre perfect bait for burbot. I missed a third fish because I left too much mealworm hanging off the hook and the must have just pulled it because when I reeled up I was missing most of the worm. It works great though! I replaced the plastic tie with some 65 pound braid and it works wonders
Great rigs! Just made my I fish Pro, a few changes from yours. Don't know yet for the better or worse but going to give it a go. Also made a jaw jacker. Can't wait to get back on the ice to try them both.
@@BackroadsAngling I had to change the title of my video, I mistakenly used the term Jaw Jacker in the title and got a very interesting comment from the folks over at the Jaw Jacker company insinuating legal action due to "trade mark" infringement. No problem on my part to change it but why me? There are literally 100's of videos out there using that term in conjunction with home made going back 6, and 7 years. Once again, thanks for the video!
Yes you can do that. I experimented with this when I was making it and I found that all the tension directly on the trigger bar reduces the sensitivity. The rod pull actually forces the trigger bar shut and it takes a pretty good pull to set it off - for me it did at least. That's why I spent extra time experimenting with the nail hanger for the loop. It takes the force off the trigger and the trap doesn't lose any sensitivity. But I would say go with what you like best!
I made some of these to save money getting into ice fishing, great video. This last weekend I ended up missing fish because my mouse trap froze from the wind blowing the snow across the lake, fish would take my minnow without indication. Holes were freezing up within minutes of scooping out. I think I should have been using a conventional tipup in those conditions. Has anyone else had trouble with this design freezing up? Tips or tricks for freeze up? Or was I just doing something wrong? Thanks for the video, I’m having fun on the ice regardless of the number of fish I catch.
I've used mine for a few years and haven't had it freeze at the trap. I've definitely had the hole freeze over though. If your line is frozen in the hole it definitely won't set off. When it's cold I just make the rounds every 10-15 min to clear out my hole and make sure everything is freed up. If you buy a jaw jacker you should do the same thing. A conventional circular tip up that sits over the hole will slow down the freezing process but it won't set the hook for you. It depends on what kind of fish you are fishing for to determine whether you need a hooksetter or a conventional tip up.
I can respect the creativity and ingenuity.. however I’d be a tad gun shy setting that mouse trap up with cold numb fingers.. seems to do the job for ya though.. tight lines!
It's not too bad. You just have to be mindful of where you put your hands. The scariest part about these things is the loaded rod. One wrong move and you might be down to 1 eyeball. Thank you!
Thanks for watching! A 2 x 4 will work fine or a 2 x 6 if you want a little more stability. You can also use a 1x 4 or 1 x 6 if want. I don't think the extra thickness provides any added advantage.
The Jaw Jacker as a whole gives me anxiety. So much energy coiled up. I got hit in the face while I was making this and it hurt very bad as you might expect. I won't make that mistake again.
There are a lot of things that I like about it and a few that I don't. You can't beat the price and the versatility. I use it for ice fishing and also tie it behind my canoe in the summer months. It has most of the capabilities of a flasher and open water fish finder. The thing I hate about it is that in cold weather you rely on your iPhone as the screen and the iPhone battery drains in cold weather unless you take some steps to prevent it. I was thinking about doing a deeper sonar tips and tricks video sometime in the future. Great to have you as a sub!
I have used 1/4 a lot but never 1/2 or 3/4. If you can lay the bait on the bottom it would be fine. If not then I'm not sure - you will have to be the guinea pig. It is pretty sensitive but I think if you don't let the weight drop to a hard stop while the line is on the pedestal you might be fine. Just keep your face away from the rod while loading it just in case!
Hey, B.A. I made some of these last December and man what a little slick design you got here. I added some of my own touches ( metal extension on the mouse trap for line protection from the snap of the kill bar and more sensitivity for those pesky perch!) but still haven’t perfected them yet. Thinking of collapsibility and storage as well as night time aid. Would love you bounce some ideas off of you via messaging somehow and maybe send you some pics of my design! Let me know what you think!
Hi John, It would be interesting to see what you've got. I must disclose that I am also working on a 2.0 version of this hooksetter and I am trying to patent the thing. I'm just telling you that in case you have some ideas that you don't want to share with me. I have no intention of stealing your ideas I just want to be honest with you. If you go to my youtube homepage and click on the "about" tab you can get to my gmail. If you want to ask me some questions or run something by me you can do so through that email.
I wish you would redo this because I’m having a hard time following you like how did you screw it down where your rod is going to go that makes no sense to me was like you just screwed a screw horizontal through the pipe. How do you screw it down?
Yes, I cut the straw in half vertically if that makes sense. It works best with a heavy duty straw - not a flimsy clear plastic one like you get in a restaurant. Any other similar plastic piece would also work, like a tiny piece of tubing cut in half, etc.
It really depends on how big the sucker is. I use big minnows and it doesn't seem like they are even close to setting it off but it is sensitive enough to catch an average size bluegill.
I don't currently have a way to get rid of the kill bar. I tried several ideas attaching the loop that is on the eyelet of the rod to the middle trigger bar. In that case the rod pulls on the trigger with so much force that the release becomes a whole lot stickier (less sensitive). I like this current version because it is very sensitive. Although I don't think it is essential, maybe in the future I will come up with a way to eliminate the kill bar - I still have a few more ideas.
No I haven't. However, if you are concerned about it setting harder than you would like there are a few adjustments you can make. 1) Change the angle of the rod holder (tip it forward more) to reduce the rod tension. You might also want to move the rod holder back away from the mouse trap if you do this or use a shorter rod. 2) Use a rod with a softer tip and less backbone (less energy loaded in the rod when set.) 3) You can also use line with some elasticity to it (mono) which will absorb some of the impact.
@@BackroadsAngling thanks so much for the quick reply!!!!! Literally warming my truck up to go get some mousetraps right now lol (have the other materials)...my son and I will be making 2 of these each tonight...pretty excited!
@@BackroadsAngling Back again with a quick question. I have one built but the line will barely lay on the straw and when I tug on it, it doesnt set the trap. May sound like a dumb question but do you think I would need to adjust the angle of the rod holder to fix this?
@@tonybowen472 Without seeing it I have a few guesses as to what you can do. Make the loop on your rod tip smaller so that the tip is pulled closer to the kill bar. This will make the line drape tighter onto the straw. Also change the angle of the straw so that it is parallel to the board instead of at a downward angle which will help the line stay in contact with the straw. 3rd, put enough weight on your line so that it pulls down more strongly on the line to create tension. 4th make sure the trap is as flush with the edge of the board as possible so that the line drapes straight down the hole instead of out and then down. Basically whatever you can do to keep the line taught.
@@marvinjarratt6971 I think you are thinking of a different video. There is no coat hanger - only a mouse trap. That is the advantage of this device. No need to try and bend a wire perfectly in order to get the right sensitivity.
@@BackroadsAngling Sorry your right. I apologize for the mistake. But it is a great video and I did subscribe and plan on building your DYI. Tight lines.
I've fished with it quite a bit in 10-15 mph winds and had no problem. The straw glued to the bait platform really helps with this. As long as you have a tight line and a little bit of weight it stays situated really well.
It's a pretty heavy rod. At first I thought it was too stiff to bend like that. But surprisingly it works just fine. I think a rod with a little more bend in the tip would be ideal.
Ya, you definitely have to be careful with these things! My head cam goes up above my head so it makes the viewer feel like they are about to get hit by the rod. My eyes are actually safe and out of the way.
those who live in ontario, dont make this, it is illegal to use a mechanical spring to hook fish. however, you could argue it is not the spring in the mouse trap that is setting the hook, it is the tension of the rod. but the game warden could be a dick and say the rod is the spring, and you didnt manually hook the fish yourself.
Yes this is a good point. Check your local regulations before you use these. As you say above the spring is not setting the hook on the fish and so it should be legal but consult your game warden first if you live in a state or province where there is a question.
One more thing - if you are concerned about the spring you can remove the spring and kill bar and simply loop the twisty tie over the trigger bar. It will provide the tension that the kill bar normally does.

Yes, I cut the straw in half vertically if that makes sense. It works best with a heavy duty straw - not a flimsy clear plastic one like you get in a restaurant. Any other similar plastic piece would also work, like a tiny piece of tubing cut in half, etc.
Thanks for the quick reply
@@JamesWhite-tg4kw No problem. Let me know if you have any more questions about it.
How does it do with big suckers bc I feel like without that Tension thing on a regular job Jager for the line would make so many false flags
It really depends on how big the sucker is. I use big minnows and it doesn't seem like they are even close to setting it off but it is sensitive enough to catch an average size bluegill.
Is there a way to eliminate the kill bar and just use the trip bar somehow?
I don't currently have a way to get rid of the kill bar. I tried several ideas attaching the loop that is on the eyelet of the rod to the middle trigger bar. In that case the rod pulls on the trigger with so much force that the release becomes a whole lot stickier (less sensitive). I like this current version because it is very sensitive. Although I don't think it is essential, maybe in the future I will come up with a way to eliminate the kill bar - I still have a few more ideas.
Have you had any problems with the jaw jacker setting the hook to hard?
@@tonybowen472 Cool! Good Luck!
Great job on the hook setter. Should definitely get a new gasfitter though, terrible work
Thank you!
Could you show how the wire is bent
What wire are you referring to? The twisty tie that goes through the eyelet of the rod and connects to the trap?
@@BackroadsAngling the coat hanger
@@marvinjarratt6971 I think you are thinking of a different video. There is no coat hanger - only a mouse trap. That is the advantage of this device. No need to try and bend a wire perfectly in order to get the right sensitivity.
@@BackroadsAngling Sorry your right. I apologize for the mistake. But it is a great video and I did subscribe and plan on building your DYI. Tight lines.
How does the wind affect your invention
I've fished with it quite a bit in 10-15 mph winds and had no problem. The straw glued to the bait platform really helps with this. As long as you have a tight line and a little bit of weight it stays situated really well.
What is your rods action for that bending
It's a pretty heavy rod. At first I thought it was too stiff to bend like that. But surprisingly it works just fine. I think a rod with a little more bend in the tip would be ideal.
Bro I’m thinking ur gonna take ur own eye out sheeeesh
Ya, you definitely have to be careful with these things! My head cam goes up above my head so it makes the viewer feel like they are about to get hit by the rod. My eyes are actually safe and out of the way.
👍👍👍
Thanks!
Wish it was legal in my state!!!
20 below ice wind in the middle of nowhere...what could go wrong
Sounds great till youre trying to set a mouse trap with frozen fingers.
I've been doing it for 2 years without a problem.
those who live in ontario, dont make this, it is illegal to use a mechanical spring to hook fish. however, you could argue it is not the spring in the mouse trap that is setting the hook, it is the tension of the rod. but the game warden could be a dick and say the rod is the spring, and you didnt manually hook the fish yourself.
I applaud your efforts but you should check out the mouse jacker on the Iceshanty.com Idaho forum. A much simpler build.
I'll check it out. It can't get much easier than screwing a mouse trap to a board.
i don’t believe in jawjackers quite yet…
I thought you were setting hooks in the rats 😭😭
too dangerous when set the line. might loose a finger when set up the line
As long as you're careful it's no problem. Even if it does set on your finger a mousetrap doesn't even leave a mark let alone take off a finger.
