    Another great job, Mark! I like to play the opening riff by coming out of the D5 shape and then into fretting a F major 7 chord and then a C chord to get those notes. I haven't listened to the song for a while but it seems to me that on the second run-through of the riff he ends by playing the A, D, and G strings of a C voicing--not sure, though!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 років тому

      Thanks! To me it sounds like open voicings, but you should always play it how *you* like it. Here's Neil playing at Farm Aid. He plays it open-voiced here, which suggests he might have done so originally too ... for what it's worth. (Get it? 😀) ua-cam.com/video/o106BuPR4B8/v-deo.html

    Good lesson. You mention he plays a couple extra notes here and there, accidentally most likely. At the time, I dont think Neil was concerned about making it perfect as he was wanting to get his message out against the Kent State events. He wanted the message out fast, the song was written and recorded and was played across the radio all with 10 days

    My 2 cents: maybe add the word lesson or guitar lesson somewhere into the thumbnail as I scrolled past this video many times without realizing it was a lesson. Many people are like me and put much more focus on the thumbnail than the title of the video. Good lesson though!

    I wonder was the D# intentional on the record?

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  3 роки тому +1

      Great question! Not sure. Probably wasn't. I'd guess this was an improvised take. Stills was/is an intuitive player. Honestly, I enjoy this more than the "perfect" but sterile stuff that's the standard of today. Plenty of good music today, but that's one thing I miss - the freshness of The Band or The Stones or CSNY or so many of them.

      Neil young was not grunge at all. Not even close. He was more folk rock. Grunge is an evolution from the old punk and metal styles from seattle. Its so different from grunge its not even close as far as guitar theory is concerned....

    • @Guitaroverkill
      @Guitaroverkill 4 роки тому

      xDVSx xONEx Guitar theory? Are you joking? You seem to forget Neil plays electric guitar. Pearl Jam has even played with him.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  4 роки тому +1

      Neil's career has been all over the place actually. True, his first hits in the 60s were marrying folk and rock. But his 1979 work (E.g., Rust Never Sleeps, side 1) were certainly what we'd call grunge today, and the lyrics were often punk-like (E.g, "Welfare Mothers"). And obviously "Rockin' In A Free World" helped kick off grunge and earned him the "Godfather of Grunge" moniker ... I know Cobain also gets this moniker.
      Guitar theory/sound? Just check out side 1 of Rust Never Sleeps (1979) and Tagged Glory (1990) and to see whether think it sounds grunge like.
      If you really want to see where Neil went in his career, check out Trans and Everybody's Rockin'. But they're not grunge - or folk rock.

    • @tomgolde5175
      @tomgolde5175 4 роки тому

      I hate what nirvana and pearljam did to grunge.... Grunge was never meant to go mainstream. All the bands looked down upon mainstreaming grunge. And thats because grunge is an offshoot of punkrock and was against the establishment. Because of nirvana and pearljam. Noone knows the true history of grunge unless u were there. Yes neil young was an influence on PJ and Cobain and he even has the unearned title of godfather of grunge. But thats an impossibility because grunge could only be created in seattle. Fact if you had a grunge band not from seattle and u played a show there stating u were grunge and not just punk or rock. Bands used to fuck you up over it. It was a crazy drug fueled no give a shits time.... younge was just an influence on some of these artists thats all. He was not grunge.

    Love this song, Mark. I could never get over that the man who wrote this song (Neil Young) subsequently became a Ronald Reagan supporter.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 років тому

      I must've blotted that out of my memory, because I have no recollection of it. Do you remember his reasoning? I'm sure there was something behind it, because it seems odd.

    • @drutgat2
      @drutgat2 5 років тому

      @@MarkZabel Yes, he said something like "I like some of his policies, and I think he is a good man". I actually stopped listening to Neil for about 20 years after that, I was so shocked. I remember that it was the front page story of either the 'Melody Maker' or 'NME' the last year or so that I lived in the U.K..
      Neil also said in that article that the person who gave him the hardest time about that was his then wife, Peggi.
      If you do a search using the key words "neil young ronald reagan", you can read all about it.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 років тому

      @@drutgat2 Wow. That's shocking. I'll read a bit when I have a chance. I've always liked Neil Young and his music. I liked how he stood up to David Geffen, liked how he changed his musical skin so often, love the simplicity of his songs and the earthiness of his laconic and often poetic lyrics. But this is disappointing certainly. All I can think is that none of us are truly integral in our lives and that this is an incongruity. I'll give it some thought and read a bit.

      Hi John. It was only CSN at Woodstock, and this is Neil's song, so I'm sure that's why they didn't do it ... although they played Sea of Madness, which is Neil's tune. Also, they played Find The Cost Of Freedom, which is the flip side of this.

The new job is going pretty well and I'm getting a better work/life balance than before. Right now I'm just trying to get to know some of the musicians in my area. Hopefully I'll ease into playing next year. Folk and roots rock are big around my neck of the woods, so if all goes well you'll see more acoustic next year on the channel. Thanks for the love! Right back at you! 😀
