9:17 I think its not just a D thats being played there. I think its a C to a D with these chord shapes: C: 10-x-10-0-8-0 D: 12-x-12-0-10-0 Neil plays it this way live and it sounds waaay epic with a distorted guitar
Y'all, the man is putting in the time and effort to bring us great lessons... think about how much we all used to pay for guitar magazines back in the day, lol, and tip Doug a little. If we all gave him just two bucks it would at least help him buy strings🙂
Great lesson! I have a suggestion: Moody Blues - Ride My Seesaw. Thanks! BTW, I recall a video of an interview where David Crosby mentioned how pissed off Neil was when he wrote this song, and that it didn't take very long to write.
It's not that he was "pissed off",,,, he was infuriated that students were murdered on campus. That's what he was trying to express, and if you listen to the original recording you can hear Crosby isn't all too enthralled either....
@@dr.richardjurica8029 That was my point. That event pissed off Neil and then he wrote the song in an hour after seeing a picture of what had happened at Kent State. See this interview of Graham Nash discussing the recording: ua-cam.com/video/7FzYEn_gevw/v-deo.html

@@dr.richardjurica8029 That was my point. David Crosby said he was pissed off when he wrote the song. The reason was obvious by the lyrics. Neil had seen a picture of what happened at Kent State and then went and wrote the song in about an hour. Shortly after, the band recorded it and released it within 10 days.
Doug, once again, you've tapped into songs that I've tried to learn in the past that I regard as ultimate rock "gotta learn" classics. I commented 3 weeks ago, after your "Cinnamon Girl" lesson that you should do "Ohio," and here it is... awesomeness!
Great lesson! Wish I could still play. Fingers stiffened with arthritis, but still like watching great videos. Ohio is one of my favorites. If you can, my favorite CSNY song is "Almost Cut My Hair", it would be great to hear your version of that song!
Ah man it is only a few chords, it is the spirit and soul you can bring to it that makes it sing, people can't teach you that, it has to come from your heart.
Instantly Subscribed. after lots of searching, you are the only one that plays this song "right" ❤. (a great song has these minor details and a lot of teachers miss that, maybe to make it playable to students...but I think mostly it's not the case, it takes a lot of investigating to get what great players do with the instrument...).
Neil uses a Gretsch white falcon with filtertron pickups, fender tweed deluxe amp, and a wizzer pedal. It snarls with the Gretsch filtertrons. Stills is also on a white falcon.
Love CSNY, I have seen Crosby Solo at Massey Hall, CSN at Massey Hall Toronto and Neil 9 times all over Toronto. Such a great band and song. Top Shelf 12 Ft ♪♫♪♫♪
Wow, info in the first minute. I've always played it in (single) drop D. Great video!! Interesting point about this song - it starts at about 65 bpm and slowly speeds up to the mid/upper 70's. You can hardly notice it.
Excellent as always. I have played this song just with the Low drop D…usually I am the only guitar so I keep it easier to tune back up! I think maybe both Stills and Young were on Gretsch guitars on this. Maybe even both White Falcons. They both had them back in Buffalo Springfield I believe.
cheers Doug...learned something "new" today....CSNY not my"sort of thing" in my musical life...but hey...sounded very melodic and melancholic....suits my mood today....haha....
Many thanks for your insights and excellent taste in song selection I’m not sure this is the most appropriate place to make the request But is there a way you could put a lesson out for Jeff Beck’s Let Me Love You from the Truth album It’s perplexing and difficult and I’m kind of stuck I think it’s an amazing tune
I recall playing this song in the 1970's at a live festival, just as the Gm7 chorus came up my guitar lead fell out! I found the lead and was able to rejoin the band, just one of those 'live' things that can happen...no wireless back then
Nice to see that the old CSN&Y songs can still generate some buzz. "Déjâ Vu" has always been one of my favorite albums, even though "Ohio" is not even on it, because it is rare that you come to love every song on a LP. Without Neil Young, the magic went through the window very fast, though. CSN? 🤪 more ore less.
You are the greatest, Doug. Classic songs with an artful articulation thats always "just like the record". Perfection.....but the Epiphone is slightly out of tune :).
Yeah the low E is still standard in that song, but you’re totally right about it being deceptively tricky. VU songs never get the credit they deserve, Reed and Morrison were brilliant guitarists and songwriters
Dig the lessons! Thanks so much! Not sure where to put this but do you think you could do Free - "All Right Now" at some point? Paul Kossoff was awesome! 🎸🤯
Great lesson on a song that never gets old. A request, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere...the ones here on YT are hit and miss, I know you'd do it right.
Curious about your Casino. Is it a vintage one? Is the Bigsby original or added later? I have an MIJ Elitist Casino from about 10 years ago that I love.
I bought my copy (promotional copy, same both sides) of the Ohio 45 and my favorite green mohair sweater at the same time, at a thrift store. True story...
almost as recognizablre as CINNAMON GIRL. I like political lyrics once in awhile. Ohio State N. guard massacre was a terrible moment if you were around in 1970. that famous photo
