    Live Stream tomorrow - The "Something" Chord Progression. It's used not only in "Something", but many other songs. We'll explore rhythm and soloing. Plus the usual guitar banter. See you there! ua-cam.com/video/4V4dnCPzu-I/v-deo.html

    So many cool classic rock guitar riffs, so little time. Thanks for this one Mark!

    The late Nicky Hopkins on piano, he had a very identifiable style. Lot of people mistake this song for being in Open G tuning. It's a typical Keith Les Paul Jr P90 riff. I always thought you had to have a Capo at the 2nd fret. I learned alot from your lesson than the others I have seen, good job!

      that's kinda neat I always do the capo at the 2nd too

      Thanks Fenderman! I know you know this was recorded in the interim between Jones and Taylor. Yeah, you can use the capo on the 2nd and it might help a bit for those Esus chords, but that isn't the cool part of the riff in my opinion. And even though it's typical, it's not really typical in how it sits in the song, or how the minor progression in the opening is turned major later. Something vaguely sinister in it.
      Nicky was all over the place in those days. I first learned about him from The Who's liner notes. He had a way of finding really open lines that layered so well with the early 70s sounds, like on Slip Kid for example. Pete's slightly dirty sound and "sawing" style fits great with what Nicky did on that, as Keith's guitar does on Monkey Man. Just the best stuff on earth!

      @Trucker Kev The Paid Tourist yeah, it's certainly okay to do it, but not necessary.

    It sounds better with a capo at the 2nd fret with the D hammer-on. The Monkey Man riff is Ron Wood's favorite Keith riff.

      Thanks Cap. Just a couple of fills in the verses and quiet arpeggios in the chorus, right. Not much guitar. Is that the right song? Angelina in the video?

    Thanks Mark! One of my favorite Keef riffs. Unfortunately, he wasn't a good lead player and I think that's why this song has always been a B-Side Stones song.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 років тому +3

      Thanks Ed! I'm not sure whether it's good or bad that Keef wasn't a great lead player. On the plus side, it gave some great formats for Mick Taylor to play over and layer with Keef's play, and it let Keef focus on making great rhythm riffs! He's super under rated in my book. Almost nobody puts Keith in their top players lists, but he was inventive with an impeccable sense of groove and bite.

    • @Edward-MTBKR
      @Edward-MTBKR 5 років тому +1

      Mark, your preaching to the choir, I love his work! I was just speaking in the context of this one song Monkey Man. The lead in the jam is pretty awful, and keeps this song from being a masterpiece. Keef is pretty much the King of Riffs and his rhythm is remarkable. I meant no disrespect.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  5 років тому +1

      @@Edward-MTBKR Okay, but we'll need to agree to disagree about the lead here if you want to call it that. I think it's exactly what the song needs - the sparse slide notes complementing the piano runs give the song it's only break from the frenetic rhythm riffs and Mick's wild chants. A searing lead there would, in my opinion, not be right for the song. I certainly don't think what he's doing is awful. It sounds pretty musical to me, especially when the drum break happens and Mick's gutteral sounds come in again. Like I said, we'll need to agree to disagree. You won't convince me that Monkey Man isn't one of their best.

      Anyway the extra i think C# trick cord you showed in the video, wasn't shown in the complete play thru of the guitar/piano intro (no extra C# shape chord in the video)
