    Haunting solo from Stephen Stills and a great backing guitar line in a strange tuning (C-G-C-F-A-C), which is double-drop D with each string tuned down yet another whole step.
    I go over both the solo and the backing guitar. Have fun with it!

    great job mark I hate to send a long message but I have to explain something ill try short hand lol ive been watching your newest lesson on scale and caged system great job heres what happen to me if I can put this in a way youll understand when I started out trying to play the guitar like everybody else I wanted my own sound a good sound per say it wasn't that I didn't agree with scales but I felt everybody does that and you can tell when they are in a scale form sometimes to repetitive so I got a book learned how to hold a few cords then I got a light type tunner and would strike a string to find that note say a G cord I would find a G note everywhere on the neck and would do a little run falling on the cord note at the beat time needed it actually carried me pretty far but I know I cut my self sort because I find myself in a scale form but not knowing the whole scale to play with so you are helping me a lot and I thank you for you time now that you understand what I did maybe you can keep that in mind how I may need help is it a mental or physical problem hehe thanks

    • @MarkZabel

      Hi. No sweat about the length of the message. I know what you mean about scales sounding like, well ... scales! My play early on was very "scaley" and still is sometimes. The way I tried to get out of it was by learning other solos closely (like the one here) and then really trying to understand them from a scale perspective. That way you see how the scales are functioning in the solo. In fact, knowing some scales (say just the major scales) all over the neck will help you get classic solos much quicker.
      That helps a bit, but there's really a never-ending number of things you can learn on the guitar - which is why it's great!
      I actually think your method is a great way to learn some things that really work all over the fretboard. Learning the major scales as well will only help.
      As always, thanks for the comment and the support!!

    now, you are excellent, thank you for taking the time to share with us

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  9 років тому +2

      Thanks, you're very kind. I still think of myself as very much a student of the instrument, but here are a few facts I think are relevant. Probably the most relevant piece of information is that I'm pretty obsessive/compulsive, so I've gotten "hooked" on a few different musical styles.
      First, I had a teacher early on. Yes, he made me go through "Mary Had a Little Lamb" (not the cool Stevie Ray version!) and I hated it and didn't practice much. And I went through the whole Mel Bay series, which doesn't get enough praise really. Truth is it exposed me to music I otherwise would not have known. One thing I remember - my teacher always made me pick every single note. Slides and hammer-ons weren't tolerated unless the music specifically showed it!
      Then when I was about 14 I started playing rock. A friend showed me the "blues box" and I learned every Led Zeppelin lick I could handle. Then I learned major scales, modes, a few jazz concepts. In high school I'd sit in front of the radio and just try to play along with every song, mimicking the solos and chords. It's hard to see where I had the time, but it probably happened over a year or so before I essentially traded the guitar playing for time with girls!
      Oh, one key thing from, say 1982-1988 was that I was always in one or more bands, playing with other musicians of various talent and styles. Many were better than I was, which was extremely helpful. BTW, I've found everyone welcoming ... except some jazz players. Two of my bands worked every week, often 3 or 4 days. This really taught me all sorts of things (what to do when ... you break a string ... you forget a chord or two ... there's only 2 people in the audience ... a band member is pissed off/hung over/tired).
      Then I quit for 10 years or so. Around 1998 I got into Bluegrass and roots music and played that (mostly guitar, but also some other instruments) until 2003, when my business forced me to quit my band.
      I started playing electric again in 2011. Thank goodness for UA-cam, because otherwise I probably wouldn't play - I'm on the road so much of the time.
      So that's it. I *did* have a teacher early on and he drilled me on reading, alternate picking, metronome use, scales, etc. - using Mel Bay even! I'm pretty much self-taught after that, but having that grounding was super-helpful. Every once in a while I do seek out a good teacher to work with. It doesn't last long, but it's enough to keep me grounded on what I want and need to work on.

    The concern expressed here that the solo is in standard tuning is 100% misplaced. In drouble-drop C, all of the fingering for the solo is identical for a dropped standard tuning save for the ONE note played on the 6th (low E, now low C) -- this is because the 2nd-5th strings are tuned in standard tuning, albeit dropped 3 steps. The simple solution to play lead in same double drop C tuning is simply to replace the single note played on the 6th string with the OPEN 5th string (I'm sure Stills played it this way originally). ALL OTHER FINGERING AND POSITIONS ARE IDENTICAL.So.....you can play the whole song, including solo, easily in the same double drop C tuning.Great video BTW. Thanks for the work and TAB.

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  8 років тому

      +David Jones Hi David. I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I was concerned about whether Stills used standard tuning. What I do know, is that I did and that the TAB is in standard tuning. But I'm certainly not concerned about it.
      Playing the solo in double-drop C, you would need to transpose everything up 2 frets (a whole tone) if you're going to tune strings 2,3,4 and 5 down a whole tone and strings 1 and 6 two whole tones. There's only one Bb that I use the 6th string for, so that's the only note that's you need to figure out where to play, as you say. I think an open 5th string doesn't work though, unless I'm missing something, that's a G - the Bb is on the 3rd fret of the 5th string in this tuning. I did this video a long time ago, so I maybe I'm recalling something incorrectly. I thought that I did the solo to match the tones on the record.
      Thanks for listening and for your insightful comment!

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  9 років тому

      Btwistin Yes, you've got it right! Playing a solo in weird tuning is tough, because the standard scales don't work. I'm fairly sure Stephen Stills pretty much improvised his solos, so that's double-tough.
      So I'm guessing he just played it in EADGBE tuning. The backup is played in CGCFAD (i.e., "Double-Drop D" tuned down a whole step. Not something you see every day!)

    • @DavidJones-wz2wg
      @DavidJones-wz2wg 8 років тому

      +Btwistin Please see my comment above. The 2nd-5th strings are tuned the SAME relative to each other in both double drop C AND standard tuning.So, as tabbed, you can play the solo identically to what the video/tab shows in double drop C tuning no problem EXCEPT the single 6th string note which, conveniently, you can substitute with the OPEN 5th string. I'm sure Stills played it this way originally.Don't use standard tuning for the solo!!!!!

    Why teach it in two different keys? Two different sections, in two different keys, which neither is played fully start to finish together? I've chosen to keep mine in D to suit my gig, but it would be great if there was a D/C version from start to finish

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  9 років тому +1

      grainne mellon I'm not sure whether your question is rhetorical or note, but here's a complete answer. I believe I've addressed this in the video, but here's the scoop on why I chose to do what I did.
      1. The performance at the beginning is exactly in the key that CSN performed it in.
      2. The song is a C modal song. That is, centered in on the C/C7/Bb/Eb changes. To get this, CSN tuned down the guitar - quite a bit. I use double-drop C to get that droning quality that they have on record. I don't *know* that's what David Crosby did, but I suspect it is. So the backup is played in double-drop C to be in-pitch with the record. (The patterns are the same as double-drop D, so if you want to play the song a whole step higher than CSN, just play the same pattern without tuning down to double-drop C.)
      3. The lead is, almost without doubt, played by Stephen Stills with a guitar tuned to standard pitch. So that's what I did.
      Bottom line is that I performed it as played on the album as far as I know. That's the explanation as to why.
      Finally, why did I not re-tune again to double-drop C at the end? It's a pain in the ass to re-tune all the way to double-drop C. But you don't need to do that to learn the pattern! Just learn the pattern (in D modal) and if you want to be in pitch with the album, bite the bullet and tune down like I did to play the opening! :)

    • @gracegbm
      @gracegbm 9 років тому +1

      I have it learned in D anyway, straight from your video. I just transposed it into that key. I'm going to be doing a gig, and wanted to keep the retuning to a minimum, as you I'm sure know, it can be a time consuming pain for the viewees 😉

    • @MarkZabel
      @MarkZabel  9 років тому

      That makes sense. I hear you about the re-tuning, but I get more complaints when I *don't* do it ... people generally seem to want it just like the record. Playing live I'd just re-tune the bottom and top strings down to D.
      (I get it a lot for Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Van Halen who almost always tuned down to Eb.)

    • @gracegbm

Chemistry is a basic science, so many curricula require it, which makes sense to me. Obviously chemistry is used extensively in Chemical Engineering. My studies were in Electrical Engineering and I rarely used any direct knowledge from Chemistry. But I would never underestimate learning in any basic science, language or literature.
