Just a comment, thought this was funny. Husband told me recently that there was a lady at work who has a health/skin condition so please don’t be shocked when you see her, he felt really sorry for her. Then I met her and she just had on a LOT of highlighter. Not the effect she was trying to have on people but I just think it is so cute when he doesn’t understand makeup. He also calls blush “rouge”
Skin care is a scam? I would say COMPLICATED skin care is a scam. Plus many people don't give skin care products enough time to show how affective they are. It takes weeks, even a few months to see changes. You have to stick with it!!
Also consistency. I will use a product for 2 weeks religiously and then fall back to forgetting to use my products after a shower because I'm tired or even wear makeup to bed 😬 but that will also impact how you think a product is working because you aren't using it as directed. I know it's my fault so I can't blame a product not working when I don't give it the chance it deserves lol
Exactly! So many people try something twice or for a week and are like, “This didn’t work!” Well of course it didn’t, you didn’t give it time! 🤦♀️ All skin care takes time. Anything offering immediate results is marketing. Whether it’ll actually work long term, no way to know unless you try it long term (other than of course looking for specific ingredients that will benefit whatever you’re trying to work on like vitamin C, tranexamic acid, etc. for hyperpigmentation or retinol for wrinkles). But you need to stick with it. I never say something didn’t work unless I’ve used it regularly and use up the whole thing, and even then depending on how often it’s used, it might take a couple tubes/bottles/whatever to actually know for sure. It’s annoying putting in that time for it to not work, but there’s people who could have thrown away something that could have been really effective for them had they actually put in the time to use it.
David Bowie and all the music bands and male singers in the 80's ! What about Boy George , Duran-Duran , The Cure , Depeche Mode , Adam Ant ..... ? The list is neverending!! They made it fashionable . And what about Valentino in his mute films and all the rest ?? ... covered in makeup . Sometimes is like they have invented something ( the fashion/trending business ) that was invented ages ago !! Nothing is new ! . Btw , fantastic video.
The take about influencers not using makeup products right, I totally agree! I see a lot of beauty gurus and people immediately dissing a product when it doesn’t work exactly how they want to, meanwhile I’ve been learning how to use my cheap, hit or miss drugstore stuff for almost a decade and MAKING IT LOOK GOOD. Some things you have to use a different technique than you’re used to and that’s okay! It’s extremely rare I can’t make something work well enough, and makeup is not even my job
Totally agree! And a lot of times they complain about something it never claimed to be! Like when they’ll complain it isn’t full coverage when it is a tinted moisturizer or BB cream or just claimed to be light or medium coverage. Or when they complain about it being dewy when it’s a dewy foundation. Just drives me crazy! I also don’t like it when I read reviews and regular people do it so it really annoys me when influencers do it 😂 If you’re going to review something, at least know the claims and judge it on that! And if it doesn’t work, try different ways to make it work! Though, I do understand some people want a product to do what it’s supposed to and not have to mess around figuring out a way to make it work. So I understand that part of it
@@onewhisper22005 yeah and I think especially for high end makeup you should be able to expect it to work how you assumed / with no fuss. But if you’re doing a full face of dollar store makeup for example and all you do is complain about the coverage or something, I’m not gonna respect you tbh. Cheaper products often do need some finessing but that doesn’t mean they’re outright bad products and that black and white labeling is what I don’t like
Totally. I thought I was gonna see a comment about Chinese/Korean/Japanese products here because that's often the case... so many 'influencers' try Asian brands (legit brands, not knock-offs) and everytime they always complain that it's not pigmented enough. Don't get me wrong there are A LOT of problems with E. Asian makeup brands -most notably their lack of foundation shades, like in S. Korea you have 3 shades total and it's: white, off white and MAYBE warm ivory if you're lucky- and these are 100% valid. BUT if you happen to review these brands, you do like Alex and you make them work like the rest of the country do, i.e. the products don't necessarily have to conform to your ‘technique’ (or lack thereof) to be good. E.g. I'm not gonna drop names but... I remember a review from a certain influencer whose name closely resembles the word "scar"- they were complaining that an eye-shadow palette wasn't pigmented enough and thus dismissed the product as soon as they swatched it... yeah it's true but also: Korean makeup is not about color payoff, it’s (mostly) about how to subtly & naturally enhance and complement your natural features and your skin. So... ofc it's not that pigmented.
I agree with the hate on contouring. I think you are an exception, Alex. Very very very few people contour undetectably, most have brown smudges down their cheeks that look terrible irl
and Tarte and Zoeva. They have a middle saturation/pigmentation and it will not go beyond the "programmed" intensity. The best for everyday natural make up to work or school - no risk of putting too much in the morning.
My hot take: A person’s hair color majorly impacts the way one should contour. I am a natural makeup and heavy contour looks weird on me. My sister, a brunette, looks amazing in traditional contour. She dyed her hair red and she asked me how I do my contour because her old method looked weird on her with red hair. I showed her how I do it. Later she dyed her hair blonde and she had to change her contour routine again!
I feel like this for sure about eyeshadow! I am quite fair and have dark brown hair and then I dyed it a more light warm brown for years. I could no longer wear cool toned eyeshadow. I looooved warm toned eyeshadows and then I let me hair grow out dark again and it looked off. I had to change my whole daily eyeshadow go tos!
I think people that don’t like contouring and lash extensions don’t realize that the only time they are noticing contour or lash extensions are when it’s bad. Both of those things done well can look amazing. I, ironically don’t use either but I have friends and watch UA-camrs who do and they look amazing. You’d never know. This is true of fillers and Botox as well. Anything overdone looks bad but done subtly and well can be beautiful. And not all skin care is a scam. My derm gave me some and it has literally cleared my skin for the first time. That said, I think most skincare is overpriced.
Yeah haha there was a girl in my school who I’d always look at her eye lashing thinking how lucky she was to have such naturally beautiful lashes, turned out they were extensions
I don't remember where i saw it but contour is like spandex- you are supposed to see the effect on the face, not the "lines". Sooo many people do it incorrectly.
So true! If all of those enhancements are done well, they should be unnoticeable because they are supposed to add to your own natural beauty. I know some people like a more obvious look, but personally I feel that if contour is blatant, it just looks like a painted face and isn’t attractive. The point is to replicate natural shadows to genuinely make your face look different or enhanced.
hot take: the whole "natural is more beautiful" and bashing people for trying to cover their acne stinks of privilege and internalised misogyny. Cake it on, if that's what makes you feel good
As someone with discoloration and swathes of acne scars, I agree. I use layers of skincare and makeup to feel more confident and to see past the imperfections.
"Natural is more beautiful"? Tell them: Then leave you natural tartar and cavities life in your teeth😉 As an ex *SEVERE* acne sufferer (16 years of nightmare and 6 derms until I kissed the right frog) I' m not ashamed to say that I needed therapy to reset my mind (as well as I needed also all these years, of course). Acne doesn' t kill the body but it destroys the brain. Skincare is not an "acne killer fighter soldier" anymore and make up is not perceived as clothing anymore (nobody takes a cup of coffee wondering: Ok, today, will I go to work naked or dressed?) That was make up for me as necessary as covering certain parts of my body. Not to talk about countless OCD behaviours related with light (from placement on a restaurant table to choosing the right side to have a walk with somebody...). Now skincare is skin CARE and make up an optional artistic entertaining way of ornamentation. I finally can go from bare face, the ultimate luxury for me, to crazy editorial abstract decorations because I CAN CHOOSE. I WANT. I LOVE IT. Even if someone has perfect skin, cake it on, betch, if you adore how it feels and looks. I still cake sometimes, just for emotional reasons. If people who are bashing something suffered this something and were bashed for a certain period of time, how many self closed mouths... 🧛🏻♀️🖤
I wholeheartedly agree. Also on the flip side I’ve gotten more confident in my natural skin but I still get really bothered when people are openly confused or putting me down for wearing makeup while NOT fully hiding my acne/redness or having it in the first place. It’s like they think it’s a lack of skill, when it’s a personal choice. A lot of people also assume my acne is from my makeup too and belittle me for wearing makeup at all when I KNOW they wouldn’t be acting like that if I actually covered it up
Former CA esthetician here, and can I say lash extensions were such a pain in the ass during a session to work around? Like, damn. Sometimes, I couldn’t put damp cotton rounds on their eyes because the tiny effers would fall off, or I’d have to be strategic with the hot towels for that same reason - they constantly fall off. So glad I don’t have to deal with it as a massage therapist. That’s my hot take. 😅
@@agresticumbra there were a teeny-tiny few that looked alright, but most looked heavy. At least, from what I remember. Not sure if I remember ever seeing brown extensions before.
Contouring is a theatrical makeup trick and has been used for centuries on actors to age them, change their face shape under lights etc. it’s just light and shadow after all. You can have so much fun with contouring.
When it comes to “full foundation vs. spot concealing” I love when people are able to find a concealer that truly matches their skin and only use it selectively. I’ve never been able to find shades that allow me to do that. And when I “spot conceal” I end up with a thin layer of concealer all over my face like a nicely applied foundation. I just need something light to even put my face all over so foundation works best for me and then I will lightly spit conceal the major “blemishes” after. I simply don’t get the right look if I don’t have a thin layer of foundation on as a base
Same same same same. My natural skin tone on my face is very pink in lots of areas when my overall body tone is more neutral and I have redness on my face that makes it look ridiculous if I spot conceal- I could never ever find the right shade
I've always loved adding a small bit of blush to the tip of my nose and all over my cheeks, hearing that looking cold is a thing now makes me so happy! I love it!
As an ex SEVERE acne sufferer, and in spite of having a beyond perfect skin, my brain has not been able to reset. I perceive any blushed area as a sign of burning, irritation or incipient infection🥺. I' m exactly Alex' shade and when I see my face so "calmed and relaxed", as beige as my neck (it used to be pink to fuchsia due to the amount of acne fighter products) totally even, no redness anywhere, I still can' t believe it 🤯😍. When I see a cutie Rudolf nose on other' s my brain makes me perceive them as non humans. Kinda like magical creatures from the forest 🧚🏼♀️✨. But somebody should pay me a good amount of money to add redness to my healed face 😅. Acne post traumatic side effects at its finest🫣 🧛🏻♀️🖤
Ok here is a challenge idea inspired by the hot take " you don't need 10 colours to create a look": Try to create a look with 20 shadows, then 10 and then like 2 maybe even one? could this work, could this be interesting idk haha
I know you hear this all of the time, but you are absolutely gorgeous. With or without makeup. The pixie cut and the color suits you so well. As a fellow pixie enthusiast, I love seeing it. People don't realize how super feminine super short hair can be. I've always been a bit of a minimalist when it comes to makeup looks because A. I like natural looking skin and B. I don't feel like my execution is there for some of the dramatic looks. But your channel has inspired me to try some things out of my comfort zone and its been very fun and inspiring.
I'm always amused by people who watch channels just to find something/body to confront, but watching your channel is refreshing, entertaining, and consistent. You have a wonderful style and totally own short hair. The Cosmetics Cop opened my eyes and you expand my world every episode, Thank You. Everyday should be a school day. In another life I repaired & serviced cars now THAT'S a world where snake oil is big business. Offered a cheaper aftermarket but much better part compared to factory most go factory then moan about the bill. You do this for free which is amazing. Thank You so much. I assume you are a serious level professional.
Everyone saying things like wear less makeup, less coverage, less concealer, etc is clearly blessed with clear skin. I wish I could wear less, but I have problematic skin that looks better covered up, so light coverage isn’t an option for me. It’s easy when you have a flawless base to begin with!
In my opinion- I just wish the standard of “looking good” was kinder and required less time and money from those with more textured or acne prone skin. Having this kind of skin does not mean you look better covered up!! You shouldn’t feel obligated to wear a ton of makeup just because your canvas isn’t “flawless”. Mine isn’t- but I won’t let this society oppress my perfectly good, healthy skin into being covered in layers of makeup every day. Yes- I understand pretty privilege is a thing. But eventually you have to make a choice- is the potential advantage a full beat gives you worth a shaky relationship with your own face and beauty? Does wearing that much makeup actually make you feel better about your true self? Of course- everyone should do what they want. I just think it’s worth it to challenge those standards of what is and isn’t beautiful.
This was fun. Personally I do whatever the F I want with my makeup and as long as I like it, it’s fine. But it’s amusing to hear the comments. You handled this with grace and made it interesting. Thanks and well done. Oh and the eye makeup was mesmerizing.
I hired a personal advicer many years ago😌. Hair, fashion, skincare, make up, everything! She lives in the other side of the mirror and her price point is😘. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
I've never understood the "rules" want glitter/shimmer shadows - you and Gab have really pushed this to the point that I think people are finally getting it! It's beautiful 😍
Dude, contouring literally upped my makeup looks so drastically I can't believe people are so against it. To each their own tho, what works for others may not work for you. Also, makeup is such a unique form of expression that people shouldn't be afraid to try new things or break away from trends/the norm.
I think the contour take could be a skintone / coverage preference issue too. I’m very fair and like medium coverage foundation so if I don’t contour my face looks incredibly flat and almost inflated (white makes things look larger in color theory). I contour to get an accurate look to my facial features 😂
@@xErinxx And in your case, not contouring should be as valid as doing it if you told me: I like a flat kinda inflated look, so I skip contour to enhance it this effect. Kinda like what happens with the aegyo-sal. They contour under eye fat because they love it. Who am I to tell them if it' s necessary or not?😅 🧛🏻♀️🖤
@x Erin x And that's fine. Like I said, what works for you may not work for everyone, and as Alex has told us multiple times there is no wrong way to do your makeup. There is only what works for you.
Idk why people would be against it, I just don't like it because I'm very bad at it and every time I try it looks like dirt on my face lol so maybe people are just projecting I wish I was able to do a good contour because it can really up a look in certain situations
About the last one, I understood it as "only lip products have a proper price to quality relationship". As in if you get cheap lipstick, it won't be as good as expensive lipstick, whether it's the texture, colour, lasting, stickiness etc etc. Whereas with other products, you may still get high quality in a low price range (so buying high-end versions isn't worth it). I can't confirm it since I only use drug store makeup.
It depends on the brand and specific product tbh. I have an 8 dollar tube of covergirl matte lipstick that has been my go to for YEARS, and it's been better than any 20 or even 40 dollar lipstick I've ever gotten. However, when I tried foundation from the same brand, it was awful and I end up always using BB cream from tarte, which is much more expensive. I have oily skin so certain products work better for my skin type. Rn, my "cheap" drugstore products are my lipstick, lip liner, eyeliner, mascara, and brows. The expensive products are pretty much anything I put directly on my face, which is BB cream, blush, contour, highlighter, concealer, and eye shadow.
^ agreed. I have a few mid through high end lipsticks that are “okay” or actually pretty dry / uneven 🥴 and then I have my favorite lipsticks which are elf, essence and colourpop!
The older we get, the less skin care in general seems like a scam. On the other hand, the scams that are out there in the skin care market become a lot more obvious, simply because my mid-40s dry skin is completely unforgiving with "bad" skincare. 😁
Could you share some of your skincare brands/routines that have worked out for you? It's a lot of trial and error just to find good skincare tools these days, I'd love to know what's been working for you! 😁
@@Nqutical I have a "list" of over a dozen brands and three times as many products, in a large number of combinations. Basically I use fragrance free hydrating products, a lot of them from AB brands like Hada Labo, CozRX, Rohto, iUnik... but a UA-cam comment is far too short for me to realistically share some of my skin care brands and routines. Sorry.
people who do elaborate, colorful eyes and no skin makeup get a lot of slack for being "fake" but the thing is they aren't even concealing or modifying anything *foundational* (not that those of us who *do* conceal are fake in any way). Like i'm just saying that the bare-skin-colorful-eyes ppl are more real than i am even on my ten minute, 3 product makeup days. They're really out here just str8 up decorating their peepers at this point and honestly if you dislike that look you are missing out because it's gorrrrg
Hot take: Highlighter is overrated and isn't always necessary. Usually when people want a no makeup makeup look, they overdo the highlight to make the skin look dewy but instead they look like a chrome ball but your face everyday without makeup doesn't have that look even with dewy skin products or oily skin. And with glam looks too, I feel like sometimes the highlighter on the cheeks takes away from the overall look. Anyone agree or disagree?
Lmao I get that but personally highlighter has always been my fav part. Idc if I am doing natural or glam sparkles and shine on my face will never cease to make me happy lol
I think it depends on the highlighter, I use Glow Lust by Auric every single day whether I wear makeup or not. It’s such a natural glow that doesn’t look too shiny
I’ve followed and unfollowed many many Beautubers over the last three years, and you are the only one I consistently watch. Thank you for your makeup tips and tricks, but moreso, thank you for being kind. To everyone, even including the companies you review products for. There is no need to hate; even if you don’t like a product! Why HATE?! Why spew so much negatively….? About a makeup product? No one thinks twice about spewing hate language all over the internet just because they disagree with someone? And that affects EVERYONE. You don’t do that and I respect you for it. MORE THAN WORDS, Alex!😊That is why I’ve continued to follow you. Your voice and kindness relieve MY anxiety and that is a gift to me. Thank you.
I do light contour almost every time I do makeup and it’s so soft that I don’t think anyone would notice, my cheekbones just pop a little more 😊. It sounds like people are seeing a lot of bad contouring or something
Yeah I only add a tiny bit of a light cool-neutral shade under my cheekbones and sometimes a little bronzer on my forehead. More than that and it’s so strange and obvious 😂
Exaaaactly!!!! And nose jobs😉. I' m I MUA and I' ve seen otherwordly lashes and noses that I wouldn' t have detected in a million years in spite of being super close to the face while doing their make up. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
as someone with bad acne i wish i could agree with the "oh just spot conceal" or "naked skin but with blush highlighter is cute" but im sorry i have horrible skin i HAVE to cover if i wanna look cute lmaooo
That was me at 20-40. Severe HORMONAL cystic acne runs in my family. I found a good shade match at clinique and it was my only splurge during those years. I always wanted to try spot color correcting, but the greens were always too minty to reduce the redness much. Good luck to you.
@@Neenerella333 If you ever want to play with green corrector again, LA Girl Pro Conceal green corrector is a very pigmented warm green. I use it to tint base products that have the wrong undertone. It's quite matte, so keep that in mind.
@Alien Eater I feel you. Bad genetics runs in my family. I was almost 34 when a -angel- derm found out how to solve it. I wish you can finally heal (don' t give up, please, find YOUR derm) and then, cake it on if you fuck*ng want! 😅 🧛🏻♀️🖤
My heart goes out to you. This was my comment years ago when I had hormonal cystic acne. Watching Taylor Wynn helped me with tons of tips when she also had cystic acne.
Acne is the worst. It literally kept me locked in my house, even avoiding my own family, until Accutane saved me. Harsh medication, but best decision I ever made
I feel like people saying skincare is a scam just have really nice skin haha. My hyperpigmentation is the bane of my existence so I'm a slave to my skincare routine. And I've seen genuine results from the products I use. I think the "scam" is convincing people they need tons of products or products that somehow defy nature and prevent aging/blemishes permanently.
I definitely agree about lash extensions although my sister just got them done for a vacation and she got them SUPERRRR natural looking! Just a little bit of length and the slightest amount of volume, it’s literally the only time I’ve ever seen them actually look good and not look like two caterpillars 😂
I hated makeup earlier and after I started watching your videos I learnt doing it and now I am fairly good at it. I am experimenting now with it, girl!! Love you and your videos so much
As a dry skin girly the brush one is SO accurate. It matters way more that you exfoliated and moisturized thoroughly beforehand and that you used a good hydrating foundation and don't over-powder or use super mattifying products. That being said, I do think I get a nicer finish overall when I can use my hands to apply rather than a brush OR sponge, but I don't know that it's necessarily because my skin is dry. I feel like some of the products just melt into the skin better with that little bit of body heat from your fingers. Also agree on oils being overrated. I've never had an oil do anything good for my face, and I do have EXTREMELY dry skin especially in winter. It just encourages acne in among the dry patches. The only oil that touches my face is vitamin E oil on my lips when they're really cracked, or tea tree on a pimple to get it to go away faster. Otherwise, I just go with a hydrating face wash, and then nice thin layers of a good moisturizer. Like I start with a spritz of rose water, then an aloe gel with hyaluronic acid, then once that sinks in fully I add either my SPF moisturizer during the day or a nice thick creamy facial moisturizer at night.
16:20 where you talk about looking at someone with skin imperfections and seeing beautiful skin made me tear up a little. I struggle with acne so much. And while I have been able to get it somewhat under control with an insanely extensive skin care routine, the acne is still there a little bit. With foundation it looks great, but bare skin is tough for me. So thank you for looking into the camera and making me feel seen and beautiful 😍
My hot take as a sacrifice to the Almighty Algorithm: The tail of the eyebrow can and should dip below the beginning of the brow. Downturned eyebrows are fine. Straight eyebrows are great. There’s no reason to avoid it because it “looks sad.” Fight me.
Hard agree. Natural eyebrows tend to fit with the person's eye shape and bone structure, and sometimes that means they suit more down turned brows. Plus I find it can make people look more kind and approachable. I think that's why people get brow lifts or shape them upward sometimes...they want that intimidating model look
I had downturned brows but then I tweezed out the ends of the tails to make them appear straighter and I really like it. I also have more room for makeup since my eyes are hooded. Plus I can always draw the tails in longer or grow them back.
For using the brush on dry skin instead of a sponge I agree and would say it looks even better than with a sponge. I have dry skin, rosacea and acne, so a sponge just soaks up a lot of product and makes my redness show through and my foundation sticks to my dry patches. Brushes can make it look streaky too, but my latest discovery is using a small concealer brush to really blend the foundation in and it actually does not cling to dry patches as much and it gives full coverage with a smaller amount of foundation. I changed from a sponge to a kabuki brush to a buffing brush to now small buffing and kabuki concealer brushes as I always discover something new I like better. I think every tool can work depending on the foundation and the skin it's being applied on, but I definitely think sponge as an only way of application just isn't it with light or full coverage looks.
@@maggierobertson2962 thank you 💜 I am glad to hear that as I was going crazy with people talking about a flawless finish with a sponge, when I could rarely achieve it, so I always used a brush and just went over with a sponge, which sometimes looked good and sometimes made my makeup worse
I have dry skin too and agree, i usually use brush but then i just stamp the almost dry blender with quite a bit of pressure to take of the excess and to work it into the skin. Really recommend that method, makes it longlasting too :)
You have such a nice balance in saying what you think and being kind at the same time. Always chill and real. It feels amazing following you. Thank you for sharing all this!
I feel the comment with the brush for dry skin. When you have dry skin (like I do) it's all about prepping your skin before you put any makeup on. A suited and regularly practiced skin care routine does the trick. I do my whole base makeup with a brush and it works like a charm. It also helps to work with thin layers.
I would say regarding skincare - just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's better or more effective. Researching ingredients is a good starting point to get the right products for your skin.
This was fun! I woukd watch a million of these videos! I'm mesmerized by your gold leaf eyeshadow! And I love how you "disagree" so softly..."I'm gonna have to....disagree" 😆
I couldn't live without my lash extentions!! I know they aren't for everyone. The place I go to teaches you how to take care of them so they are not that hard to maintain. Also you can get extentions that look very natural. It depends on the lash and the stylist. Some skin care is a scam but I feel you only need a few products to have healthy skin. Loving the background 😍
I wonder if the reason people always think eyelash extensions look bad is because the good ones go unnoticed because they just look like really full natural eyelashes therefore you only notice the too heavy “bad” ones? 🤔🤔
@@maddieb.4282 if it’s so natural, why would you even need lashes? You’re trying to improve things. We can see that. I can imagine the average man will often have no clue. But those who are into makeup know, even if it’s subtle.
I started using my foundation under my eyes just recently and it kinda slaps, but on a glam day I’m still gonna use concealer. The foundation I use is NARS soft matte
the cold makeup look has been my everyday makeup for like 8 years and it really threw me off seeing it trending as "im cold makeup" i never thought about it like that i just like blush and shimmers but now that they mention it i kind of see it
Concealer and contour are like the holy grails of makeup for me, you just need to understand your own face and how to use them. I feel like everyone complaining about it,imagine the typical 3cs technique that the Kardashians or drag queens made trendy these past years, not everyone looks good with that. And about concealer, green color corrector is amazing for rosacea, peachy concealer for dark circles is a life saver.
Face oil: I have psoriasis and 18 months ago it was all over my face. It was bad and extremely noticeable. Every evening, before bed, I wash my face and then I apply a rose face oil followed by Nivea Soft Cream. In six months my skin had cleared. I still do this every evening - my skin is soft and hydrated and feels amazing. The oil I use is not expensive, it comes from an English drugstore called Boots. I highly recommend it to everyone 😂
There are glosses that are less sticky-Fenty Gloss Bomb is my fave. I bought a squeezy replacement on vacation and it was SO STICKY. The natural make up look, a la Hindash or Lisa Eldridge, is technically so restrained and precise, it does seem to be time consuming. But the results are undeniable. Jackie Aina got me on that primer, then powder(T zone only), then foundation for long wear on hot days. My oily skin responded well to it.
My hair naturally is really frizzy and it has a mind of its own - some areas are perfect curls, some are perfect waves, some are perfectly straight, some are a mix, and some I have no clue what they’re doing. Anytime I try braiding my hair to get waves, it never turns out right! It always looks crazy and frizzy. So if I want waves I have to straighten my hair THEN use a wave tool to do it. It’s not worth the effort 😂
My lashes are so straight, and I've tried countless mascaras (even thrive mascara) and I've found only one that keeps my lashes curled. After I curl my lashes I immediately put on my Maybelline Falsies Mascara (The original one in the purple/magenta tube not the newer silver tube one) My lashes stand up all day without flakes or smudges.
Thank god someone talked about the lash extensions. I tried it and then I realized I always just put on mascara and falsies anyways which look 10000 times better and the extensions are such a waste of $
Nose contour looks terrible on everyone. I haven't seen one that I thought looked good and wasn't super distracting. Even if you can make the illusion work from the front (which it often doesn't) as soon as you turn your head it's so obvious that there's just this weird floating brown color on your nose that doesn't look like its supposed to be there. Also because noses are very 3D and can have many variations like bumps and asymmetries that result in different shadows it ends up looking patchy most of the time.
I feel like you might only be noticing nose contour that’s obvious and that’s why you don’t like it. Also note that a lot of beauty gurus do it to more of an extreme either from personal style or because they’re on camera and that can effect how well contour comes across. But like for me, if I don’t contour my nose with foundation on I think that looks a lot less natural than with some contour. You just need a bit, in the right shade for your skin tone, to help shape your nose
I agree but also somewhat disagree with every comment if that's makes sense.... nothing is a NECESSITY until you want it to be. Skincare isn't necessary and neither is makeup but those are individual preferences. Your eye look is UHMAZING for new years and this was a fun video!
Thank you for praising healthy skin. I get so much attitude from people who prefer heavier make-up (and also from those who choose no make-up). For me, make-up is a creative choice for people to embrace. I like minimalism and glam! Taking care of my skin is always required, though.
Yes! I have found that if I do all of my makeup BEFORE under eye concealing, I end up not wanting it! My eyes look bright and I have dimension because of the depth of the socket❤️❤️
I'm so used to wearing natural makeup, I struggle to make my makeup look bold. But my boldest looks are still subtle enough for so many people who love colors. And generally my only trick to make a look bold is to use a red lip
I agree that falsies look so much better than lash extensions, but I'm a busy gal and having extensions gives me more confidence to wear less or even no makeup on the daily which is such a time saver when I have to get up super early for work
You don't need 10 eyeshadows for a look. But you can totally use them if you want to 🤷♀️ or more. You can use what you want. That's my opinion. Do what you want 😉
Wear your makeup however you want to. Ignore. Love you looks, wouldn't think they'd suit me, but your tips n tricks are invaluable. Keep em coming, the more colour the better 🥰
Absolutely agree with the lip gloss and long hair ... a bloody nightmare it is . I dont like lash extensions nor fake ones but I think that like individuals we decided what to put in our faces. For me is exactly like when you are chosing an outfit to go out , is a way of creating , my little moment of not thinking in anything but making something beautiful . It is an Art and makeup like yours today prove it . For me is therapeutic and with 52 I covered my eyelids in glitter and shimmer.... make the grey days look better ! And life is too tough to be worry about what you should or not use , there are so many more important things ! . Up to their taste,. Not everybody likes the same clothe, same hair style or same colour...and is ok . It is us who have to love us in our skin . You look amazing with your pixie hair , I would look terrible . Each face is different. Thats the beauty !! 🖤
Makeup is to enhance your beauty so you do it the way you want to. You know what you feel look go on you. I watch theses videos to help me learn how to use different products and because I feel you are a great makeup artist. I don't watch anything that I have to say anything bad to the person. I just want to say you do a great job and you are a beautiful woman.
Love your eyes! They always look great, but today, they are “holiday” special. Makeup beauty, like many things, is in the eye of the beholder. There are many looks I personally would not wear, but can like/appreciate the artistry. Skincare helps maintain what you have and may counter some existing concerns, but eventually, time and life are going to get ahead of these efforts. I know, as I’ve been trying to undo life’s effects on my skin. I now try to maintain what I have and know that “life” is going to show through. Acceptance of reality is a great beauty product.
Spot concealing is a privilege for those who don’t have skin problems to begin with. Spot concealer becomes fleshy dots on pink the moment I experience a human emotion due to rosacea.
Thank you for the tip on using waterproof mascara. Mine are short and flat too but I’ve been using your trick for a few months now and it actually works!!! 😭😭
I have super flaky dry skin and I do prefer an oil with my moisturizer bc it does help my skin to look and feel smooth and glowy. Also I do agree on the brush or sponge. I love a damp sponge if I’m using a liquid serum foundation but in all honesty I prefer a powder foundation with a brush just bc I feel like it hides my dry skin more. I have heard so much that people with super dry skin shouldn’t wear powder foundation but I have been since I was in junior high or high school when Cover Girl came out with their powder foundation in the black compact lol. The older I get the more I prefer to just go ham on the skincare and then just use some mascara, powder foundation and lip balm or gloss 😊
I highly agree about ABH Subculture or Melt Four twenty palettes. They're really good products, but people who gave them negative reviews just don't have enough skill to work from dark to light. 😕
I agree that the really heavy lash extensions that drag down the eye are really unflattering. I think its important to go to a good (not necessarily expensive though!) lash tech, and get the length/shape that flatters your eye shape. For me, the foxy ones that get longer toward the outer corner are unflattering, but the dolly and squirrel that open up the eye are really nice.
I feel like the concept of people not knowing how to propperly use a product applys to so many of theses comments. Makup, lashes, skin caren etc. All of it is a matter of learning what is good and how to propperly use it best for who you are. Thats the beauty of individuality 💜💛😘
Just a suggestion: I’d love to see your opinion and insight on skincare/makeup layering and preventing pilling. I know you’ve touched on it here and there but it could be worth it’s own video 🤔❤
😂
Love reading that someone still uses the word "rouge" for blush. 🖤
Oh my goodness.🥰 KEEP THAT OUR HEART OF HIS SAFE!
How charming. 😂
I love the use of “rouge” ❤ Is he southern?
My mom calls blush rouge as well 😊
Skin care is a scam? I would say COMPLICATED skin care is a scam. Plus many people don't give skin care products enough time to show how affective they are. It takes weeks, even a few months to see changes. You have to stick with it!!
"Washing your face is a scam smh"
whoever said skincare is a scam is probably young with perfect skin lol
Also consistency. I will use a product for 2 weeks religiously and then fall back to forgetting to use my products after a shower because I'm tired or even wear makeup to bed 😬 but that will also impact how you think a product is working because you aren't using it as directed. I know it's my fault so I can't blame a product not working when I don't give it the chance it deserves lol
word
Men + Makeup = David Bowie. And if David Bowie can do it, so can I, damnit.
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Heck yes!! 🤩
you've come a long way, buddy!
I kindly disagree. David Bowie is not human. 😅😜. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
@@SisselSasha yes that’s true too! Not understanding what to actually expect from a product
@@SisselSasha totally agree!! It’s not right to complain when it’s doing what it’s meant to do 🤦♀️
I agree with the hate on contouring. I think you are an exception, Alex. Very very very few people contour undetectably, most have brown smudges down their cheeks that look terrible irl
Hot take: I want an eyeshadow that is NOT super pigmented. I want it to have color, but not be crazy saturated. 🤷♀️
U might like Korean/Japanese eyeshadow
@Lil Ash I second this, Definitely check out Ali express and k/j beauty.
Kbeauty and Jbeauty eyeshadow brands are super sheer!
I love a nice wash of color too. It’s better for beginners lol and way easier to work with!
and Tarte and Zoeva.
Cake it on, if that's what makes you feel good
Totally agree!!!
A lot of people also assume my acne is from my makeup too and belittle me for wearing makeup at all when I KNOW they wouldn’t be acting like that if I actually covered it up
Also, if you're a "full face" person and ever do no makeup, people think you are ill. Men think they know what "natural beauty" is... 🙄
I definitely agree with the eyelash extensions. Some people look like they’re about to take flight ✈️ 🤭😅
Did you ever see natural, as well as brown, lash extensions? I've avoided them due to the harshness & heaviness of the look.
@@agresticumbra there were a teeny-tiny few that looked alright, but most looked heavy. At least, from what I remember. Not sure if I remember ever seeing brown extensions before.
And as a an MUA! I find they mostly don’t suit the eye shape and size of the client so makeup needs to be adjusted.
Contouring is a theatrical makeup trick and has been used for centuries on actors to age them, change their face shape under lights etc. it’s just light and shadow after all. You can have so much fun with contouring.
@@sagebeauty theatrical makeup can such a trip to play with! I can still smell the Spirit Gum.
Preach
Same same same same. My natural skin tone on my face is very pink in lots of areas when my overall body tone is more neutral and I have redness on my face that makes it look ridiculous if I spot conceal- I could never ever find the right shade
I've always loved adding a small bit of blush to the tip of my nose and all over my cheeks, hearing that looking cold is a thing now makes me so happy! I love it!
I always put it on my nose, I didn’t think I looked cold, I thought it looked more like a little kid nose or a doll, lol, idk.
Acne post traumatic side effects at its finest🫣

I have learned the most from this channel!
Ok here is a challenge idea inspired by the hot take " you don't need 10 colours to create a look": Try to create a look with 20 shadows, then 10 and then like 2 maybe even one? could this work, could this be interesting idk haha
Whoa, I unexpectedly started crying as you talked about smile lines being beautiful. Thank you for saying that.
It’s easy when you have a flawless base to begin with!
exactly
Or do not look at makeup as a creative therapy that can be if you are skilled enough :)
I have bad acne, rosacea, and serious acne scars and subscribe to the no makeup look. You’re convincing yourself you need to cover up
i do not have perfect skin by any means 😬 and i think less makeup looks better
I thought ‘no makeup makeup’ was boring until I watched your channel. Like you also do tons of other things but your base makeup is flawless.
This was fun. Personally I do whatever the F I want with my makeup and as long as I like it, it’s fine. But it’s amusing to hear the comments. You handled this with grace and made it interesting. Thanks and well done. Oh and the eye makeup was mesmerizing.
Exactly, the only person you have to please is yourself.
Who am I to tell them if it' s necessary or not?😅 🧛🏻♀️🖤
@@sebumpostmortem true!
@x Erin x And that's fine. Like I said, what works for you may not work for everyone, and as Alex has told us multiple times there is no wrong way to do your makeup. There is only what works for you.
Idk why people would be against it, I just don't like it because I'm very bad at it and every time I try it looks like dirt on my face lol so maybe people are just projecting
I wish I was able to do a good contour because it can really up a look in certain situations
Preach, preach and preach. 🧛🏻♀️🖤

OK can we get a tutorial on this eye look?! This is so stunning and would be fucking perfect for New Year’s! 🎉😍
I think it depends on what kind of look the person is going for - some of us like our faces to be sparkly 😅

I’ve followed and unfollowed many many Beautubers over the last three years, and you are the only one I consistently watch. That was me at 20-40. Severe HORMONAL cystic acne runs in my family. I found a good shade match at clinique and it was my only splurge during those years. I always wanted to try spot color correcting, but the greens were always too minty to reduce the redness much. Good luck to you.

Agreed!!!!! I have down turned eyes and a straight brow makes me look crazy AF!!
Some people wear them and it makes the face look innocent and sweet
I don't understand anyone who bashes sad puppy eyes they are the most cute thing ever. 🐶
Glad to hear someone else who has had the experience. I have dry skin as well and usually dense flat Kabuki style bushes give me the best finish.
Your zen energy is just epic. Thank you for doing your thing 👏
I wonder if the reason people always think eyelash extensions look bad is because the good ones go unnoticed because they just look like really full natural eyelashes therefore you only notice the too heavy “bad” ones? 🤔🤔
no. we can always tell, trust me
No, I see them. Not cute.
Lol the people responding to you so confidently actually makes me more convinced that you’re right
@@maddieb.4282 if it’s so natural, why would you even need lashes? You’re trying to improve things. We can see that. I can imagine the average man will often have no clue. But those who are into makeup know, even if it’s subtle.
I think this calls for a contour in natural light tutorial!
Omg your opinion on crows feet just made me so happy because crows feet are something I’ve really been getting in my early 30’s! ❤
I started using my foundation under my eyes just recently and it kinda slaps, but on a glam day I’m still gonna use concealer. The foundation I use is NARS soft matte
I literally could not look away from your eyelids… absolutely stunning👏🏻😵💫🤯
People saying “you don’t need contour” or “heavy makeup”… y’all. You don’t need any of it. It’s makeup. Have fun and MAKE UP yourself or don’t.
the cold makeup look has been my everyday makeup for like 8 years and it really threw me off seeing it trending as "im cold makeup" i never thought about it like that i just like blush and shimmers but now that they mention it i kind of see it
Say it with me - Contouring is a skill and a preference.
Concealer and contour are like the holy grails of makeup for me, you just need to understand your own face and how to use them.
I feel like everyone complaining about it,imagine the typical 3cs technique that the Kardashians or drag queens made trendy these past years, not everyone looks good with that.
And about concealer, green color corrector is amazing for rosacea, peachy concealer for dark circles is a life saver.
love ur honesty in this video and ur eye makeup is A+
I feel like the Natasha Denona comment should of been for Charlotte Tilbury. I Iuved the dog liner comment 😆
Totally agree with the primer one. I've tried loads and they always make my make up look worse.
Your eye makeup is giving me new year’s vibes! So gorgeous! Love the responses to these. ❤😂
Thank god someone talked about the lash extensions. I tried it and then I realized I always just put on mascara and falsies anyways which look 10000 times better and the extensions are such a waste of $
Enjoyed this content. Alex, you are so authentic. Thank you for being the artist and person you are. ❤️
You just need a bit, in the right shade for your skin tone, to help shape your nose
not all nose contour is the same
Rose hip oil has helped fade my acne scars. That oil at night will always be a part of my skin care process.
I agree but also somewhat disagree with every comment if that's makes sense.... nothing is a NECESSITY until you want it to be. Skincare isn't necessary and neither is makeup but those are individual preferences.
Your eye look is UHMAZING for new years and this was a fun video!
i am obsesseddddd with these longer talking videos !
Thank you for praising healthy skin. I get so much attitude from people who prefer heavier make-up (and also from those who choose no make-up). For me, make-up is a creative choice for people to embrace. I like minimalism and glam! Taking care of my skin is always required, though.
I absolutely love you’re makeup look including the lip
Dark circles is like natural eyeshadow I think it looks gorgeous I was jealous for years about this
Yes! I have found that if I do all of my makeup BEFORE under eye concealing, I end up not wanting it! My eyes look bright and I have dimension because of the depth of the socket❤️❤️
My gosh what do you have on your eyes?? It is drop dead gorgeous! You look stunning
I'm so used to wearing natural makeup, I struggle to make my makeup look bold. But my boldest looks are still subtle enough for so many people who love colors.
And generally my only trick to make a look bold is to use a red lip
I agree that falsies look so much better than lash extensions, but I'm a busy gal and having extensions gives me more confidence to wear less or even no makeup on the daily which is such a time saver when I have to get up super early for work
Appreciating your authenticity in your videos ❤ thanks Alex
You don't need 10 eyeshadows for a look. But you can totally use them if you want to 🤷♀️ or more. You can use what you want. That's my opinion. Do what you want 😉
I just want to say I find you really relatable and kind...hard to find in the yt Beauty field xx
Wear your makeup however you want to. Ignore. Love you looks, wouldn't think they'd suit me, but your tips n tricks are invaluable. Keep em coming, the more colour the better 🥰
Totally enjoyed and totally need more of this 😁
Absolutely agree with the lip gloss and long hair ... a bloody nightmare it is .
I know so many girls irl that wear a FULL heavy face with NO lip color as well lol. Looks so insane lol
your eyelook is amazing!! You slay it
LOVE you'r eye lids. Very festive. Some skincare is bad, not all. You have to find the right person to guide you.
Now I gotta jump back in and say CATS have the BEST eyeliner for real. 👊🏼
totally agree w u abt lash extensions, i tried it once and it instantly aged me !
So no one else is going to ask for this gorgeous gold makeup look for NYE? Aight, bet.
