Probably because she was a famous makeup artist especially known for her magic cream that she mixed herself and used on all her clients. She started the brand with that magic cream. UA-cam makeup was also getting big and she gained popularity among her fans fast for her products and she sent them to big UA-camrs as well
I think the packaging aesthetics is kind of old etc. and all this aura of tackiness gives a perception of age, kind of vintage Avon or something. I had the same impression.

@@marthaj67 I entirely agree. The fact Drew Barrymore has been so successful is really inspiring, but that she had to be her own grown up in, like, every way is totally unfair and sad. I wasn't bringing Drew up as if to say "well, it can't be that hard," I was mostly just giving another example of someone who was at nightclubs at age 8.
I’ve heard a few snippets of what you mention over the years and it’s always given me the ick. The celebrity worship, wearing makeup to bed, implying everyone needs makeup to look good etc. It kind of creeps me out and paints a picture of a sad, shallow person.
@@beckybertish7841 what weirds me out about it is she makes it sound like she doesn’t want her husband to see her without makeup. I think it’s fine to wear makeup as much as she wants, but if the person closest to her in the world never sees her bare face (seemingly because of her insecurities) it makes me a little sad.
I've never bought from CT purely because she gives off "annoying aunt who tells you that you put on weight loudly at the family function" vibes in her ADs.

My daughter met Tilbury in person while working at a very low level convention job . She told me that Tilbury was very kind , down to earth and polite. My daughter did not know who was and barely wore makeup. Definitely not makeup follower or a celebrity fan. Charlotte was curious about which old Hollywood and historical women my daughter liked. So if you don’t care for her products or her marketing image that’s fine but be assured she is a decent person in the flesh. Who was not a good person and a rude jerk was Jeffery Starr. @@cathypiper9373 That does make me see CT in a different light and I respect her for that. Very professional of her. As for J.S., well, forgive me, but what a POS!!!! There’s NO excuse for that behavior! Has HE looked in the mirror lately? My grandmother was the same way. I can not remember seeing her without her hair done and her “face fixed”. Grandmother grew up in the war years and women were expected to look their best at all times. With a shortage of men, the competition among women to land (and to keep) a husband was fierce! Women of my mom’s generation wouldn’t even be seen taking out the garbage without wearing pearls, high heels, and makeup. When I was born, a newspaper crew wanted to feature an article about us. From what I was told, Mom asked them wait while she freshened up her lipstick and donned a nice robe instead of a hospital gown. My fav switch up is Pam Anderson. Can we talk about how gorgeous she is without makeup! In the 90’s her makeup with life and now her choice to go makeup free is even more iconic! ❤
I love Pam’s choice of going makeup free but I do mourn the loss of her eyebrows. It’s the only thing missing. Ofc she’s such a cool person that I hardly pay attention to her looks. She was like the only celeb who spoke out on behalf of Julian Assange. She just seems really decent and sensible, unlike a lot of celebs.
Pamela is really just a cottagecore girl from a tiny Canadian island IRL. She's closer to Anne of Green Gables than the Marilynesque image she donned for hollywood. If you see her cottage on MTV from 20 years ago you will hear her talk about how she loves vintage items that none of her husbands liked like white wicker and chandeliers.

I always found the marketing quite cringey but I lived in the UK for three years and saw the ads everywhere, I finally gave in when a friend went to pick up a Filmstar Bronzer and I got a Popshot and a few products since then. But the marketing has ironically still made me disconnected from the brand, not attracted to it, and I can imagine that a lot of people feel the same- it just doesn’t feel current or as relevant to the consumer’s recent relationship with celebrity and it’ll be interesting to see how well it resonates within the next five years or so.
Especially the time an interdepartmental sale email "accidentally" was sent to a bunch of people on her mailing list. I didn't get it but it was all over my Facebook groups for makeup artists. Oh, please!
I agree. As someone in my late 40s I feel like the marketing speaks to ppl in my generation like back in the 90s and early 00s. Of course now I have the money to buy brands like CT! 😂 I think it will very quickly become even more out of touch and seem disconnected over the next handful of years. The newer generations are changing makeup trends and CT willl new to evolve (like so many other brands as I’d the cycle of marketing over time). It will be interesting to see what happens when CT herself retires.
Totally agree, I think the marketing is naff, condescending and just plain weird! It's like you have to be 12 years old with a minus iq!! There is something about CT that I don't like but I can't put my finger on it. I do think she's over rated though and irritating!
I didn’t know she said that about women who don’t wear makeup. Automatically, I intensely dislike her. I rarely wear makeup- it can be a joy yes, but it can also be a HUGE insecurity and money trap. I am enough as I am. I don’t need to weaponize beauty to succeed because kindness wins. Hate to say this, she sounds vastly insecure and a bit narcissistic. The price point is ridiculous, but now I’ll never buy from her. This has been very enlightening, thank you Kelly. I've never bought CT, but not because I have anything against her. Nothing suits my skin and taste. While I find her personal relationship with makeup strange, I think she is a marketing genius, and has developed some great products. I actually find her response to e.l.f. quite cheeky and in her character. E.L.F. profits because she does the creative, the development of the product, and tests the waters, then they enjoy her hard work. She can have a little fun and its very on brand. Hollywood. Branding. Image. Its not quiet luxury. Its not trying to pretend to be something it is not. The only thing that seems ridiculous is the fragrance.
It kind of surprised me to hear that Charlotte apprenticed with Mary Greenwell! I watched a couple makeup tutorials by Mary on Lisa Eldridge's youtube channel and she seem to have literally the opposite makeup philosophy to Charlotte! Mary doesn't use brushes, just fingers, she's all about imperfection and using makeup for an artistic effect, not to gain something or make you look "better" than without makeup! Mary and Lisa seem much more aligned than Mary and Charlotte!
Mary does use brushes. She did a video with Sali Hughes showing the brushes she uses. She uses her fingers to apply foundation, concealer and cream blusher.
There is just something about her that really turns me off. The way she talks, like exaggerating her words, and her facial expressions (again super exaggerated), is just so annoying. Something about her just screams super narcissist to me. She's very into herself and it's just weird. Lol, just as I was typing this comment you starting talking about how she's acting weird these days and like playing a caricature of herself. That's exactly what I was trying to say!!! @@madsquishy3410 I feel the same. I’m wondering if she has something going on like narcissism or histrionic. Purely speculation. I’ve never met her. These are just thoughts based on her going to nightclubs when she was 8, her very unhealthy obsession with makeup and power “weaponized beauty”, the over-dramatic persona, and the celebrity worship. Idk I’m just wondering
I’m so happy you did this video and I think it’s really important to have the conversation that brand figure like Charlotte Tilburg like Selena Gomez, etc. are not our friends. They are trying to sell us something and we should be more critical of the actual products than buy into the whole “lifestyle/icon” fantasy. I was HUGE on the Charlotte Tilbury train and what got me to snap out of it was the hyper aggressive marketing of labeling things as limited edition so we panic buy (and I stupidly also bought a backup) and then it just quietly becomes permanent. Like we’re not dumb.
The CT fragrances are totally off brand. She should’ve gone in an old Hollywood art deco, and if she wanted to go a little woo woo about it (honestly a little magic can be fun) she could do a Victorian flower languages type thing
Her first fragrance had the old Hollywood bottle but the smell was terrible!!! She gave the, with minimum purchases and as I was buying things for my friends (I live abroad and in Brazil they don’t have CT), I received a few bottles which I gave away because was unbearable. Few years later she launched the new perfumes but still not as great
I am pretty minimal with makeup, and CT still remains after a number of purges. I don’t care for her as a person but a few of her products remain in my now minimized bag of less than 30 products remaining. Love her Filmstar Bronze & Glow is one of my 2 favourite bronzers, my only highlighter, I am on my third and it’s also my favourite eyeshadow duo because it’s the easiest pretty natural ish eye look. Double use product. Her Airbrush pressed powder is another one I have bought over and over. It’s currently my only setting or finishing powder. Pillow Talk lip liner, lipstick and eye quad are my only “warm” makeup products. They pull a bit orange but when I want a little more warmth I love them on their own or with my usual cool tones to add a touch of warmth. Always in my minimalist makeup and bought several times. My one & only lip liner. The Sophisticate quad is another great quad, and is one of their few cool toned products. I purged it in favour of the UD Naked 2 mini.
I love the setting spray, I haven’t tried anything that even compares, it’s lovely. Also love Pillow Talk lipstick and liner-lots of gorgeous liners and lipsticks out there but this one feels special when I wear it. Haven’t tried anything else because I don’t want to fall in love with more of her expensive products 😂
This is so helpful. I am a daily makeup person, own no CT products as find her ….won’t type it. Your answer is succinct and persuading…will try at least one of these. Thank you. I should not be so closed minded.
I used to watch Charlotte T a lot, and the thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the way she fawned over the celebrities she was doing makeup on vs models. With the models she would just take them by the chin and push and pull and turn like a doll. But with a celeb she would be all darling this darling that, please turn your head blablabla.
CT is my favorite brand, and I think Charlotte is a hoot. I had eczema for decades, and wasn’t able to wear makeup. Once it went away, I couldn’t wait to wear makeup. It gives me confidence I lacked all those years. I think Charlotte Tilbury’s makeup is beautiful, the packaging is beautiful, and worth every penny. My husband buys me a big tub of Magic Cream every year for Christmas, and I make it last all year (a little goes a long way).❤️
I don’t own anything from Charlotte’s brand but I relate to mascara being the first makeup product I tried too and it hooked me to makeup as well I remember trying it and being fascinated by how it changed my eyes
It's interesting that you say we can infer that dupes are affecting CT as a brand when we are hearing other reports that luxury is a fast-growing sector and that dupes are actually driving consumers to the higher-end product. But in this wider picture, it seems like dupes are hurting everyone. I wish brands would just focus on making great products - fewer but nicer, you know?
I agree! We’re now on to “dupes of dupes” (I think Kelly did a video on this a year or two ago). I think dupes originated with all good intentions (so that people who didn’t have the money could still get an approximation of a product) but now we’re so inundated with dupes, “novelty” products, all kinds of “this is just a little bit different and so you need this” products - even hardcore makeup mavens are getting burnt out. There’s a reason brands like Clinique and Lancôme hang on under the influencer radar - they cater to the middle-aged and older people who don’t want to follow every trend but are brand loyal when they find a great product. Meanwhile new brands go through the cycle of Sephora to TJ Max to “whatever became of Brand X” every few years. There’s a limit to the shades of purple eyeshadow, TV or movie or toy tie-ins, etc. that people are going to spend on. And people are getting just as sick of the makeup equivalent of “designer brand clothing that falls apart in the wash” as they are of fast fashion.
@@CatFurniture974 Not only that, but many of we "middle-aged and older people" have disposable income, and when we find a product that works for us, we keep buying and buying and buying it for years until it's discontinued. Or until, for whatever reason, we stop buying makeup. That's a dependable revenue stream.
They have to say what they did about dupes. They cant say they aren’t impacting them then send cease and desist letters and claim monetary damages. Dupes remind people of the OG product. I would support fewer good products.
I was really upset that Charlotte sued Dr. Idriss on UA-cam for her Pillowtalk skincare line which was named organically because she filmed all her videos in bed. Charlotte knows what it feels like to be sued because she had to rename her lipsticks. I googled and there are other "pillowtalk" brands.
While I understand the frustration Charlotte and the rest of her brand might feel about dupes, it's important to remember that oftentimes there is very little overlap in the market for consumers of the original versus consumers of the dupe. Consumers who buy the dupe largely were never going to buy the original but are glad to try something designed to be similar at a much lower price point, and the consumers who were already buying the name brand will continue to do so. There may even be some who will try the dupe to see if they like a product like that at all without breaking the bank and will then go back out to buy the real thing. Are they assuming that everyone who bought the ELF Halo Glow is a stolen CT Hollywood Flawless Filter customer? Because they aren't - I personally bought the Halo Glow (and it's not really my cup of tea - too orange, thick, and metallic) because I was curious about that type of product and I simply was never going to spend the money on the Charlotte Tilbury version. They didn't "lose" me as a customer because they never had me to begin with
I find CT makeup to be so underwhelming, and CT herself rubs me the wrong way. You're right; "fun, quirky, weird" is what she's going for, but it comes off as trying way too hard. Aside from her though, the eyeshadows were so overhyped and the lipstick isn't any better than others that cost half the price. I've decluttered nearly every CT item in my collection, except for the flawless filter, iconic nude lipliner, and the airbrush bronzer.
i looooove her pressed powder. i’m an oily gal so powder is essential in my makeup routine. but as much as i love it, there are SO many other cheaper products that do the same exact thing, and i’ve come to realize that with most of her other products as well. i think it’s similar to a luxury brand: you’re paying for the name and to be able to say “this is Charlotte Tilbury.”
I never bought any products from CT, I always found the products overpriced for what they are but mostly there’s something unattractive and phoney IMO about that marketing
Great video! Loved your analysis. Completed agree about the fragrance branding… Felt like a departure from the ‘Old Hollywood Fantasy’ vibes of the makeup line.
Honestly, I do prefer the hollywood flawless filter over the Elf dupe. If I had to choose a dupe, I would go with the Catrice one bc the Elf one feels so heavy on my skin.
Interesting. I love the Elf one but also the Charlotte one. They work in different ways for me. I want to try the Juvias Place one also. I use Charlotte for going to big events. Elf is for running errands.
i don’t use it often, but i like auric’s version of flawless filter the best because it actually goes light enough for me. never have and never will buy the CT or the elf ones because i’m not trying to look orange with the lightest shade 🤣
I genuinely feel Charlottes over the top over exposure is cheapening the brand at this point, it’s losing its high end allure and feeling like soap and glory. She needs to be more mysterious now.

I work for a beauty company and met her in the spring at an event. She was insufferable. She came on stage and talked about how lucky we were to be selling her products in our stores, when days prior, Ariana Grande was so sweet and thanked us for all we do for her and how lucky she is. The whole crowd was aghast at her attitude. She said when she meets people , she can tell whether or not they use her magic cream because without you look like garbage. Later that day, I met her in her booth and she said to my friend who was with me, “Darling, I can tell you don’t use my magic cream” she proceeded to put makeup on her face without asking. She named dropped celebrities left and right. It was eye opening, but man do I love the setting spray. 😂
The perfume line of CT seems very strange. Has a sort of Charlotte and the 7 Dwarves feel. Not lovely at all. Not Hollywood at all. Not much magic. I don't use any CT products because too expensive for what it is.
Well, fragrance is a natural extension for a makeup and skin care line. It's worked for a lot of brands: Clinique, Estee Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, Kat Von D, etc., etc. I think even MAC has, or had, a fragrance. But that doesn't mean it will work for all brands. OTOH, sometimes you don't know until you try.
I loved this! Charlotte's products make up a large portion of my collection - fun to hear some stuff about her and the brand. Certrainly not perfect, very commercial - but also a lot of SOLID makeup. I'm not interested in the dupes, personally.

ive been really unimpressed with CT since i decided to splurge on the magic cream and a pillowtalk lip set. the packaging on both feels so cheap and thrown together and the lipstick fell out of the component only a week after i got it :( the magic cream also burned my face super bad and gave me a horrible rash for weeks but given that i have psoriasis im not gonna blame that on the cream just yet. so i was already disillusioned with the brand altogether after realizing they're charging a luxury price for dollar store quality. but now hearing the way she talks about makeup and especially the way she talks about other women? oh hell no😵💫 it's genuinely heartbreaking to hear the way she thinks about herself but its a different story entirely to hear that she projects her own insecurities onto other women. misery loves company i guess. either way this really solidifies my current opinion on the brand, mediocre quality for a luxury price tag all while it preys on insecurity, no thank you
It's quite possible that the Magic Cream did cause your rash. It has several fragrant ingredients: Citronellol, Linalool, Rosa Damascena Extract, Geraniol, and Michelia Alba Leaf Oil. That's a lot of fragrance! This is a problematic product for anyone with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or sensitive skin. I hope you'll stop using it, and if possible, return it for a refund.
Same, I can't use any of the skin care it has too much fragrance, and I did buy the pillow talk lip set to find out its straight-up orange on my fair, cooltone skin. Such a disappointment, and I dare not buy anything else. None of her products seem to cater to my skin tone.

I cannot stand the patronising darlings she's always coming out with in those awful adverts. Honestly, those ads put me right off, and then there's the price point, which is way too high, in my opinion. I've never been tempted to buy this brand.
Love this deep dive! The look you create is really nice too. Being a 90’s girl when I think Hollywood glamour I think Max Factor. I’ve listened to a half dozen videos about Mr Factor but I still would adore Kelly’s take. Mr Factor had an interesting start, being a chemist then being forced to work for the Russian government/monarcy, being Jewish escaping persecution, moving to USA without knowing English, creating products for the worlds fair and then being scammed and having to start over…to being THEE Hollywood makeup artist.
I'm guessing she went to a really cheap supplier for those perfumes. 😅 I'm waiting for those to be dumped in my place just like what happened to her first perfume Scent of a Dream
I received a sample of Love Spell and i did a dumb thing by spraying it on my body before smelling it and I was literally nauseous at work all night! I was not a fan at all.
I sincerely always enjoy all your videos, Kelly! I’ve been in the online beauty space since 2010. I never watched CT’s YT channel but no one would stop talking about her and for YEARS I wondered WHO is Charlotte Tilbury?! I appreciate this deep dive bc I never got this far. I remember her brand exploded in 2014. It was inaccessible so I never tried it until it went to Sephora, and I still cannot afford her prices but I wish I could. Her marketing is incredible and clearly successful. Since CT has come to Ulta, I’ve noticed a lot of young people at their section, talking about it, reacting to it, asking their moms for it. There is a hype around her brand. I mean, good for her, and good for the people who can afford it. I like what I’ve tried but I usually have to shop for a dupe bc those prices are outrageous! And in this economy! I am usually excited to see what CT comes out with bc they are usually trend setters and create cult products that have lasting hype for years and years. Rarely do I hear about how bad their products are.
I've read a lot about the Pillow Talk lipstick and the Magic Cream. But I can't use those products because they have fragrance, as do most CT products.
I do not own any Charlotte Tilbury products nor do I plan to buy any new makeup in general very soon, and I do not like the packaging (I do not watch ads/promotional advertisements ever so I can't tell you how I feel about that) for some of the products I've seen (not ALL), however it is very refreshing to see someone who's honest about their brand, opinions, and so on. Instead of doing what she does (actions wise, not words), making, naming, and promoting all these products in this way but talking about how she "enjoys makeup as an art form" or whatever other bullshit makeup brand owners/whatever say when in reality they couldn't care less about it as a tool for self expression or a tool to level up in life etc, she is actually honest about her views (of course it's extremely rare that someone will publicly state their thoughts, feelings, and opinions 100% honestly or accurately or whatever, this is not what I mean, but rather just not full on lying or twisting things)
I’m a professional makeup artist for over 30 years. I have many brands in my kit but not hers. I feel some of her products are good but not all and they are way overpriced for what they are. I don’t like her personality as well. I do respect her success and she is very talented
I don’t like them, too fragranced, eyeshadows way too sparkly, better lipsticks out there. Also seems dated already. Yes, such a caricature now preferred her years ago, loved her when she did a video Lisa Eldridge years back. Lisa Eldridge’s make up techniques much more me.
It makes sense she would think everyone should wear makeup because when you love something to the point you are willing to make it your career, you can't imagine other's not loving it. You just want them to get the joy you get from it.
I’ve only bought 2 things from her brand the hypnotizing pop shots…and got a free reward of the magic cream maybe but used it once. I’ve never gotten the hype, I think her packaging looks like old Hollywood but in a cheap and tacky way. I think it’s all very ugly.
I enjoy watching all your videos, Kelly, including these “deep dives”. I appreciate all the research and hard work you put into them. You have a knack for tactfully and respectfully expressing your opinions and POV without being belittling, scornful, condescending, derogatory, or just downright mean. And you actually used CT’s products as well. You look very pretty in that signature “CT Look”, rockin’ that “glow”! I hope you and everyone within this community have a fabulous week ahead! 🙂
I don’t know about US,but in the UK a Charlotte Tilbury perfume is 130 £. For comparison,I can buy an Hermes perfume with that money. I don’t consider those brands equal.
i am gonna be honest - charlotte makes amazing makeup but it is too expensive. it makes me not wanna buy it, especially when dupes perform better. theyre not like hourglass who make one of a kind blushes. they just sell overpriced, glowy stuff.
I always assumed that she got the permission of people whose names she used for products. Wild to find out that she just does it without even telling them.
Uff, Kelly, I didnt need this deep dive. I was living in blissful ignorance about the woman behind the brand and now I'm bummed! In all seriousness, really informative, interesting piece. My favorite lipstick of all time is CT Bond Girl. I believe they've changed the name, but I still have my tube with the og name. I got swept up in the Pillow Talk hype and bought it but was never able to make it work with my medium/dark skin. It always looked a bit ashy. I did get Pillow Talk Medium and its a better fit but not as nice as Bond Girl is on me. If anyone has a Bond Girl dupe suggestion please share. Dunno that I wanna buy from her anymore, shes kind of obnoxious.
CT is too much for me. IMO she is over the top dramatic!! Her products are “amazing & magical”. I don’t feel the same. I Tend to not purchase CT partially due her personality.
CT is a shrewd business woman who has capitalized on her success with celebrities and her signature, “Pillow Talk” -much like Coco Chanel did with her No. 5 fragrance and the “little black dress”. I wholeheartedly agree that CT goes overboard with her “buzz words” and self promotion. She does sound like a broken record. I find it ironic that Kate Moss is her “celebrity poster child” since Kate is famous for her “no makeup “ look. CT is right, though-people do tend to treat you differently according to how you look. I don’t agree with it, but it’s just human nature to gravitate towards the people we perceive as more attractive. I’m not saying this in a mean way, but I wonder what CT does look like without all that war paint? I imagine she’s pretty with or without it. She probably has a lovely porcelain complexion with charming freckles. It’s those unique, individual characteristics that set us one apart from one another. For example, when you, Kelly, wear a “skin like” foundation and your freckles are visible. You have a lovely complexion and I appreciate that you don’t hide it with heavy foundation. I don’t believe for one second that CT wears a face full of makeup to bed. That’s obviously a sales gimmick. It’s common knowledge that going to bed without washing off one’s makeup adds years to one’s complexion , and CT is so beauty- oriented that she must be extremely conscientious about proper skin care. She has to maintain her looks in order to promote her merchandise. She can come across as vain and cashing in on her association with high profile, celebrity clients. I don’t perceive her remarks about women who don’t wear makeup as deliberately rude, spiteful ,or insulting; it’s just a ploy to sell more products. In my humble opinion, most women are beautiful with or without it. Reminds me of a quote by Audrey Hepburn: “Makeup cant help you if you are ugly on the inside-unless you eat the lipstick.” 😂 Or, as my sweet Daddy used to say, “Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes right to the bone!” He would also say: “You don’t need makeup, because you can’t improve upon perfection.” 🥰 But all of us like a little “help” once in a while, even if it is a little bit, just to boost our confidence. 🙂
I enjoyed this video and learned a lot of the brand's history. I used to buy a lot from the brand but I don't really find the appeal any longer. She stopped releasing her star products such as the large eyeshadow palettes and the quads and went for strange options such as the perfumes. I am aware that eyeshadow is no longer popular but I think they were truly what made her brand shine from other brands.
thank you so much Kelly for your video about CT :) I must say I was not attracted at first by yet another new makeup brand, especially with that focus on selling celebrities, and influencers... but I tried it on a show sponsored by CT, and I was hooked. even if I own more of NARS/MAC/Chanel products in my makeup kit, I now have the lipliners and lipsticks, the color ranges are so so so well done, especially in the nude/natural tones, and for every skincolor :) there is a lot of different undertones in similar colors, so this is very interesting to find the perfect color for one model or client. I think the next products I'm going to get are the pressed powders. they are very effective and can be very helpful for setting and especially retouching. I will wait for the PR package though :) it's beautifully made, the lady is funny, the smell of the product is incredible, but there is not a CT product that is absolutely necessary that you cannot find somewhere else :) these are great products but in my opinion no must haves :) have a lovely day 🌹✨
I will say I HATED the brand at first & I just didn’t understand it & thought it was overpriced basic. I bought the flawless (not the flawless filter) foundation & fell in love. This was in 2019 so there wasn’t actually as much hype as there is now for her products, it was more on the luxury side of UA-cam how I found her products / brand. I did buy the flawless filter & I enjoyed it & I will say the bronzers she has is 10/10 & the amount of product you get is so good, along with the packaging is amazing!!! Now I do think the products they have been pumping out are not as good as the brand was. Any of the viral products I feel like the quality just isn’t there & I actually feel like the quality of newer products has changed. I got a new flawless filter & idk I felt it didn’t perform or wear the same & idk if ether its using more expensive ingredients or they have made them have cheaper ingredients but I do think now her brand is about pumping out the next viral product & to me I think it’s wrong. I think the celebrity thing is also tired because I do think makeup artist & celebrity MUA’s do pump out good products but like actually celebrities put out products they do use & if people actually want them like they are gonna get the celebrity product, not the MUA. I think makeup brands are in a weird world where like there’s nothing to release anymore tbh. All the brands do now is put out a product & go back in a year or 2 & put out a better version to replace the old one, but I think brands need to focus on making staple products & not just a product that will be forgotten in like 2/3 months
@@BelleLopez312 I agree, I just waste money on them. There are some good products at the drugstore but it’s usually not the dupes. I would rather just buy something I’m wanting rather than not using 3 versions of the dupe & then buying whatever it was anyway.
Thanks for the researches compiling the video. It resonates with my feeling of the brand who buy from selfridges from the beginning. This could be made into a serie and we can learn some more makeup brand history for maybe vlogmas!
Charlotte definitely wants to be a celebrity. Why was she at Met Gala? That looked very weird and kinda pathetic to me because she is not from the celebrity world.
Well, it's a logical extension for a makeup and skin care line. It's worked well for a lot of brands, but that doesn't mean it works for every brand. And there's a lot of fragrances out there.
I honestly don’t mind her shtick. It’s over the top I agree. That said, she has some great makeup & the only brand I’ve repurchased. The skincare is meh though. Don’t know why she bothered.
I have to say that I got the mini pressed powder and lipstick and gloss and they are very cute and good products but not worth the full size price. Thank you‘darling’😊
I work somewhere that sells Charlotte Tilbury and can say from personal experience that the fragrance is not selling.... like at all. I dont think one full size bottle has been sold while I have been on shift at least (although I have sold maybe 5-10 of the travel sizes). The other thing though, and shocked to realise they are a fragrance focused parent company, is that the fragrances have ZERO staying power, like zero zero. Even the deep, heavier scents are gone without a trace in about an hour. I still am astounded and confused as to how they even accomplished that, and I personally find the scents themselves a bit pedestrian at that price point but regardless the main thing I am stunned by is the lasting power (or lack thereof).
I love when you do these deep dive videos. Brains and Beauty content! This video confirms all my skepticism about CT. So glad I have never given Charlotte any of my money. She comes off as a QVC presenter in her videos!
I love your brand deep dives so much!! I like her finishing powder and setting spray but her eyeshadow palettes are extremely underwhelming. I know it’s overhyped but I do like her lipstick too. As a person, she must be so lonely and insecure.
im a long time fan but havent watched your videos in so long due to being busy with school, you look so gorgeous omg. you age literally the absolute best, and from when ive first watched you to now your just gorgeous. im glad you brought up this topic because i feel like no one knows about the history behind her lol. loved hearing your insights :)
I love her make up! I dont buy it because I believe I can be a celebrity, but because I really love how things match so well and I love the quality. And I agree with her, people look at you differently wehn you wear make up - its just a fact. You will get better propositions at your job, better treatment overall - its just the game of life I suppose. Nothing against it. And lastly, I have extremely sensitive skin and eyes, and her make up is the only one that will not make my eyes look red! Even the powder shadows that I could never wear - hers I can. I have around 4 paletes from her and I wear them all - no irritation whatsoever. I have products for eyes, eyebrow, face. Everything comes together as I believe her brand is so well done and her products are so good - they all work in unision. Sensitive skin people, try her make up! Love her, love her brand and love her makeup.
Charlotte HAS become the Celebrity. She’s amusing, annoying and acute. Just when I get a bit worried about her, asking myself “has she finally lost it?”, she sells something new and wonderful. Does anyone else think she is the internet, updated, upscale version of Mary Kay?
I’ve never been drawn to charlotte tilbury products. I feel like for me the exaggerated ads and the branding was just a bit cringe to me and not luxe. With that being said, I like a very minimal aesthetic and I know that’s not to everyone’s taste either!! I’ve heard good things about a few of her products and but these days with so many choice I am more likely to gravitate towards a brand that I feel more aligned with.
The fragrances are all horrible. I'm not surprised they aren't selling. The fact that they predominantly sell on line too puts me off buying a fragrance from them I was glad I didn’t when I got to smell them 🤢
I didn’t know anything about how she grew up and now knowing that I think the philosophy behind her line makes sense. Also, growing up in that scene she may have not felt as pretty as so many adults that she had seen around - even in the streets and friends of her parents and not just the actual clubs. I’m sure makeup made her feel pretty and I do know that is a theme that resonates with many people and especially women. I know that is true of myself. I’m in my 40s now and definitely go makeup free more days then I wear makeup but o have to say throughout my 20s and 30s I wore makeup all of the time. I was a server for over 12 years and I made better tips when I had makeup on. I know people respond differently and better to me in my office job now when I wear makeup. I’m sure part of it may be how I present myself when I feel more put together but I also know for a fact that is not always the case and sometimes being “prettier” gets better results. In a weird way I kind of like the fact that CT thinks of makeup as something to have in our arsenal as I think that is true. Whether or not we think people need to realize everyone is pretty woth or without makeup is not the point, if a person feels better with it then it is a tool for them as CT suggests. I would say that her saying we “need” it is not true but many may feel like they do and did before CT came along anyway. Same with clothes. I can’t deny I feel better going out with a little bit of makeup and not wearing my sweatpants. I’m not sure but I may like her philosophy better than a makeup brand acting like it’s some artistic expression as if I wanted to be a famous painter but as an average person it allows me to “be creative” like I was otherwise going to grow up being Rothko or something. I absolutely love the creativity of makeup and I don’t think anyone could deny that aspect of it also but for many of us it is a tool and I don’t think there is anything wrong with someone being honest about that and using that as a theme to sell. Clearly it resonates given her success. I do agree however that I think the marketing could be turned down a notch (or three!). This was super interesting, thanks Kelly! I wonder what will happen when CT actually retires someday - curious to see how they continue the marketing. Also, I think the younger generations are also different in thinking what is “socially acceptable” and I think that is also changing ideas of makeup.
I stopped liking Charlotte after she dropped Bella Hadid over her support for Palestine. Unfortunately, some of the her products are actually pretty good despots their prices however I’m also a firm believer in you can still like the brand just not the person behind the brand. So while I do still own some CT products…..I don’t plan on ever buying more, I’m just gonna use up and finish the ones I have.
I liked that in the beginning she brought out the looks so you could pick one that you liked or would suit and it showed you products that would match like eyeshadow, liner, lipstick and lip liner and blush that will make for a nice look together. Same with her eyeshadows they seemed very easy to recreate at home, a little paint by numbers. As time has gone on she's moved away from this making makeup accessible to everyone ethos but kept the motto. Its now more like all the other brands.
I LOVE the pillow talk medium lipstick so much! I've tried hundreds of lipsticks and this on is definitely in my top 5! Her pressed powder is another favorite of mine, it's so silky and smooth! Her line is a bit pricey, but in my opinion it's very much worth it!
idk why but whenever I see Charlotte Tilbury she just looks like a fancy J.K Rowling to me 😭😭😭😭
Lol I always thought so too.
I never realized why Charlotte looks so familiar, but now I know😭 Thank you for sayin this. I've been wondering why for yearsssss
Omg, you just unlocked a part of my subconscious I think 😂
IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO SEES THIS
Can't unsee this now!
Interesting that you note the brand was only launched in 2013. Somehow I had the impression the brand was much older.
Probably because she was a famous makeup artist especially known for her magic cream that she mixed herself and used on all her clients. She started the brand with that magic cream.
UA-cam makeup was also getting big and she gained popularity among her fans fast for her products and she sent them to big UA-camrs as well
Agreed!
That is a testament to their success I guess.
I think the packaging aesthetics is kind of old etc. and all this aura of tackiness gives a perception of age, kind of vintage Avon or something. I had the same impression.
swear I thought she was around and a competitor with the likes of dior and etc.
Anyone who was going to nightclubs at 8 has me concerned for what else was going on in their childhood 😕
Drew Barrymore, but she was a star in her own right by then, AND a legacy
@@lux.illuminaughty With respect, none of that makes it right. In fact, with her family "legacy", staying away from alcohol and drugs would have been the wisest thing to do. It's too bad she had no responsible adult looking out for her as a child.
@@lux.illuminaughty that's who immediately came to my mind.
@@lux.illuminaughty didn't she also end up with a full addiction by her teens? She may be doing great now but that's because she healed not because her childhood was good
@@marthaj67 I entirely agree.
She started getting on my nerves when she would wish happy birthday to only her famous clients on Instagram 🙄
She's always seemed super shallow and it's put me off her products.
Yeah it gives me the ick too. Nothing wrong with wearing or not wearing makeup...just wierd if I wear makeup to bed it's unintentional..

Omg yes! I’ve never been able to put my finger on the vibes she gives me, thank you!
It’s also giving “the aunt that tries to sell you her MLM products at family function”
@@BethHartSmith I was gonna say also “the aunt that asks when you’re gonna have a baby” so I reckon her MLM pitch will include something that is good for fertility but also keeps you skinny 💀
“Darling! You don’t have to put on weight when you get pregnant! Just use [insert useless MLM product here]”
I finally purchased the Pillowtalk lipstick this year & was disappointed.
I seriously never saw/heard her speak until the “stolen” lipsticks and that was enough. lol 😕
He actually insulted my daughter’s plus sized body. Who came to her rescue , surprisingly , was Kiley Jenner . She was kind and supportive.
@@cathypiper9373 That does make me see CT in a different light and I respect her for that. Very professional of her. Considering that CT’s clientele includes such high profile celebrities and supermodels, I wouldn’t have expected her to be so down to earth. That’s very impressive. As for J.S., well, forgive me, but what a POS!!!! There’s NO excuse for that behavior! Has HE looked in the mirror lately? I think as a redhead, I understand how it affected her so much. It really is a game changer for most redheads natural features that tend to be transparent. Powerful is a better word I’d use, but I get the marketing uses.
Warpaint
My mom has beautiful skin and never wore anything except lipstick. I can remember my Dad say, Paint, your lips Betty, let's go " I love makeup, but I have to wear it all the time.
My best friends southern mother hasnt left her bedroom without full hair and makeup forever. At least the 35 years ive known her. Most glamorous woman ive ever seen. Didnt stop her going swimming with us doing miles in laps, dancing (dance teacher), gave birth four times in full face. Iys just her routine, her time. Its not for me but i dont judge it and she doesnt force or suggest makeup or hair on ger daughters or us.
As long as she doesn't push it on others, love that for her
My grandmother was the same way. (Mom wasn’t high maintenance or anything, she just wanted to look her best.) Like you said, whatever works for each individual…🙂
😂😂 w worked Mid/Gynae for several years as a nurse, and I will Never Forget the One birth, where she gave a couple of pushes and pop, out came the most gorgeous girl baby I'd ever seen. Her handsome husband went off to pick up their other child, she quickly showered, blow-dried her hair and put on 'basic make-up' and looked like a goddess!! He came back with the first daughter who looked like a doll with long dark hair and was sooo sweet And Polite!! They were like something out of a fairy story for good looks and being nice people.... so, when I had kids... yeah, I had stitches, vomited, 3 day labour, looked like death warmed up, at one stage, my husband thought I was going to die!!!.. nothing like her, and although I did take my make-up bag, never used it once!!😂😂😂
@@lynettefinnigan9540 lol Like a good wife and Mommy, you were prepared for anything! Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it! 🤣
I also have a wheelchair-bound, 95-yr-old, glamorous aunt. She just purchased a one-shoulder, ruffled, white, swimsuit. I say , "BRAVAAAA!"
My fav switch up is Pam Anderson. Can we talk about how gorgeous she is without makeup! In the 90’s her makeup with life and now her choice to go makeup free is even more iconic! ❤
More beautiful than ever. She's stunning.
@@ashleylala4293I’ve seen Pam walking nearby Harrods with bags of groceries for Julian and everyone was wow’ed whenever she walked past by. (In case you’re not familiar with London, Harrods in is front of the embassy Julian lived at)
Think she doesn’t look good without makeup. Plain Jane.
Oh, please!
Possibly it won't. I think we're at the beginning of a shakeout of beauty brands, and this one may not survive.

I appreciate all of the research you do in preparation for these videos! This is one series where I never miss a video.
I know! How does she do makeup, remember the info and look in the camera throughout? Impressive🎉
You don't have to be like the person who trained you.
@@jazmeen04 I was just sharing my observations.
The number of CT ads I’ve been served while watching this is absurd 😂
I feel your pain. I finally subscribed to Premium to stop the torrent of annoying, irrelevant ads for products I'd never buy.
Yeah she ass kisses a little but I think she means well as sort of being friends and also colleagues I’m sure it can be confusing
My husband buys me a big tub of Magic Cream every year for Christmas, and I make it last all year (a little goes a long way).❤️
It's really cool to be committed to one brand, I think you save a lot of money and mental energy that way!!

I will say CT herself always is looking crazy with the outfits she wears 😊

No way?! That’s wild. Charlotte thinks she invented the word “pillow talk”
@@annan.3283 EXCUSE ME? That’s it. I’m done with Charlotte. I love Dr Idriss.
They didn't "lose" me as a customer because they never had me to begin with
I wish more people understood this!
I do love the setting spray.
That’s the impression I get, too, that she’s trying way too hard. Real self-confidence doesn’t have to try, it just is.
i looooove her pressed powder. i’m an oily gal so powder is essential in my makeup routine. but as much as i love it, there are SO many other cheaper products that do the same exact thing, and i’ve come to realize that with most of her other products as well. i think it’s similar to a luxury brand: you’re paying for the name and to be able to say “this is Charlotte Tilbury.”
"i think it’s similar to a luxury brand: you’re paying for the name and to be able to say “this is Charlotte Tilbury.”" Exactly.
I never bought any products from CT, I always found the products overpriced for what they are but mostly there’s something unattractive and phoney IMO about that marketing
I need you to know that I got an ad for the Magic Cream in the middle of this video.
I’ve been genuinely wondering about her since the “missing lipsticks” campaign…
Am I the only one who doesn’t own one single CT product?😅
I can’t stand the packaging & I know that where the prices are from.
Me! I have my favorite and not interested in hers.
Me too. She's so annoying.
I do not own anything either…. I find everything a bit too ‘shiny’ for my liking..

I genuinely feel Charlottes over the top over exposure is cheapening the brand at this point, it’s losing its high end allure and feeling like soap and glory. She needs to be more mysterious now.
Agreed. Saturation, too much.

@@mountainmamacloth4441 I would have probably been a smart a$$ and said, “I DO use your magic cream”, just see CT’s reaction! 🤣
Yikes!
The perfume line of CT seems very strange. Has a sort of Charlotte and the 7 Dwarves feel. Not lovely at all. Not Hollywood at all. Not much magic.
I don't use any CT products because too expensive for what it is.
The marketing for their perfume is hilarious, “harnessing the power of neuroscience” means absolutely nothing
I can't get dressed without Charlotte's setting spray and pressed powder. I also adore the Pillowtalk Push-Up Lashes mascara.
Love the spray, there’s nothing like it.
I’m not too familiar with CT! Thanks for a little history lesson.
I loved this! Charlotte's products make up a large portion of my collection - fun to hear some stuff about her and the brand. Certrainly not perfect, very commercial - but also a lot of SOLID makeup. I'm not interested in the dupes, personally.
You forget that Drew Barrymore was doing the same thing at a young age. Charlotte‘s not the only one. I’m sure it goes on around the world… It’s not Charlotte‘s fault, it’s her parents. Same thing with Drew Barrymore. Not her fault, it’s her parents.Where she grew up is a celebrity Island, it has a reputation. Just like Hollywood has a reputation. No one grows up normal in Hollywood. You can’t blame Charlotte for it. It is what it is
ive been really unimpressed with CT since i decided to splurge on the magic cream and a pillowtalk lip set. the packaging on both feels so cheap and thrown together and the lipstick fell out of the component only a week after i got it :( the magic cream also burned my face super bad and gave me a horrible rash for weeks but given that i have psoriasis im not gonna blame that on the cream just yet. so i was already disillusioned with the brand altogether after realizing they're charging a luxury price for dollar store quality. but now hearing the way she talks about makeup and especially the way she talks about other women? oh hell no😵💫 it's genuinely heartbreaking to hear the way she thinks about herself but its a different story entirely to hear that she projects her own insecurities onto other women. misery loves company i guess. either way this really solidifies my current opinion on the brand, mediocre quality for a luxury price tag all while it preys on insecurity, no thank you
It's quite possible that the Magic Cream did cause your rash.

Mr Factor had an interesting start, being a chemist then being forced to work for the Russian government/monarcy, being Jewish escaping persecution, moving to USA without knowing English, creating products for the worlds fair and then being scammed and having to start over…to being THEE Hollywood makeup artist.
i don't exactly like Charlotte herself, or even their marketing image, but i love their products. i don't have any products from her i don't like.
CT dupe for magic cream or water cream, i can't remember which, from nina pool, is the Cereve moistuizer in the tub.
I use and love the CeraVe tub moisturizer, it’s my holy grail.
Yes CeraVe tub moisturizer!!! and it's fragrance free. All her skin care products have too much fragrance for my sensitive skin
The perfumes smell awful. If they were good, they’d pull the numbers

When I think of old style Hollywood beauty brands, I think of Max Factor. I miss that brand. 😢

Very thorough and insightful explanation. Nicely done!
Thank you so much!
I like her commercials, and I love her products. The pillow talk eyeshadow palette is one of my favorites.
Can you do a video on Advent Calendars? I watched someone unbox this years Mac's Advent Calendar. There were 5 lipsticks pretty much the same color. 😮
I don’t know about US,but in the UK a Charlotte Tilbury perfume is 130 £. For comparison,I can buy an Hermes perfume with that money. I don’t consider those brands equal.
I love your deep dive/rise & fall series!! So good!
i am gonna be honest - charlotte makes amazing makeup but it is too expensive. it makes me not wanna buy it, especially when dupes perform better. theyre not like hourglass who make one of a kind blushes. they just sell overpriced, glowy stuff.
I always assumed that she got the permission of people whose names she used for products. Wild to find out that she just does it without even telling them.
I got so many CT ads during this video 😂
Oh gosh😂
Just a note: The first Pillow Talk product wasn't lipstick but a lip liner. The lipstick came quite a bit later.
I will wait for the PR package though :) it's beautifully made, the lady is funny, the smell of the product is incredible, but there is not a CT product that is absolutely necessary that you cannot find somewhere else :) these are great products but in my opinion no must haves :) have a lovely day 🌹✨
That tiered necklace is a beauty 🥰
I wish elf would dupe her setting powder cause I’m tired of spending so much on it 😂

Charlotte definitely wants to be a celebrity. Why was she at Met Gala? That looked very weird and kinda pathetic to me because she is not from the celebrity world.
You hit the nail right on the head. When I heard/saw that CT was now doing perfumes, I was like "huh? That's weird."
Well, it's a logical extension for a makeup and skin care line. It's worked well for a lot of brands, but that doesn't mean it works for every brand. And there's a lot of fragrances out there.
So funny how she adds beautiful before beautiful after in tutorials but she is the one who says that there is no one who looks better without makeup.
Her magic cream is basically Nivea
The fragrance launch felt very random and disconnected to me. It was giving Cash Grab lol
I love when you do these deep dive videos. Brains and Beauty content!
This video confirms all my skepticism about CT. So glad I have never given Charlotte any of my money. She comes off as a QVC presenter in her videos!

I agree!!
Charlotte HAS become the Celebrity. She’s amusing, annoying and acute. Just when I get a bit worried about her, asking myself “has she finally lost it?”, she sells something new and wonderful. Does anyone else think she is the internet, updated, upscale version of Mary Kay?
I absolutely prefer the elf halo glow over the flawless filter and the Catrice one is fantastic too in my humble opinion.
The fact that they predominantly sell on line too puts me off buying a fragrance from them I was glad I didn’t when I got to smell them 🤢
Didn't know all that! Charlotte is defo larger than life. What a hoot!❤
Wow! What an excellent, thorough, and well researched video on Charlotte Tilbury. This was fantastic!
I've liked the products I've tried, but I've always thought the ads were tacky.
