I have had 2 chins all my life, and now I have 3. I have a super rounded, yet square face now. Started with makeup at work on a regular basis, 4 years ago, and I am still learning all the new ways of doing shading and contouring to help me give face everyday.
You are the only make up channel I can just watch all day without ever getting bored. I have a contour related request though? I see so many women doing a contoured face & it is so detectable in real life. Especially nose contour. Instead of creating an illusion of a slimmer, shorter, wider longer, whatever nose, on women less talented than you it looks like what it is: a nose with dark and light paintings on it. I think it is because in real life light will hit the face very differently from a studio lighting? Jaw contour is way more forgiving as I think you'll always have a shadow under your jaw & chin so the illusion is not ruined. My request is, because you blend like a pro and have a solid background in painting, could you show nose contours in different lightings? Like what mistakes to avoid? I love your techniques & tutorials but am mortified to look like those women whose nose contour looks like paint.
Perhaps because they’re going for a LOOK, and the LOOK doesn’t involve looking…. Natural. Or maybe they don’t fully understand the purpose of contouring. Or they don’t have good lighting. Or they need to practice. It’s almost like there are millions of people who wear makeup and different reasons for being good or bad at it.
Also, talent has nothing to do with it. You build skill. If someone “fails” (by your definition) it’s because they need to work on it. So let’s just let them practice without judgment P.s. I don’t think having bad makeup is mortifying. It’s not the end of the world.
One thing that might be helpful if you’re concerned about blending is to pick up the cream contour with a brush first (either directly from the component or put it on your hand first to warm it up then pick up with a brush so you get the product more evenly dispersed on your brush) and then apply to your face where you want it. This is often a lot easier than placing product directly on your skin and then trying to blend things out. This helps avoid that muddiness or look of lines that don’t look completed blended out, especially depending on the heaviness of the product or the texture of your skin. Start with a bit of product then build as you’d like. Takes a lot of experimenting!
This is the only beauty UA-camr apology video I care about 😂 in all seriousness thanks for showing how this is changing! You basically taught me how to curate my makeup routine to my own facial structure. Now pregnant I’ve noticed I have to change this up due to changing face shape! Love that there are no “rules” in makeup 😘
I love that you go through all these different contour configurations. You get to experiment with different looks, and you expose your audience to the variety of techniques that they/we might never see otherwise. Wins all around!
Oooooh! Idea! Since you’re an artist, you could demonstrate contouring on paper, using blank face shapes. So you’d have say, 4 common face shapes on white pages. They would look flat and 2 dimensional (because they are), but then you’d give the illustration some dimension and shape by contouring it with paint in foundation and contour shades. Followers would see quite literally see how contouring pushes things back in space and light brings it forward. No, I’m not drunk, this is just the crazy way I explain shit. 😂
I’m starting to learn makeup now at the age of 25. I never wore any before, not because I didn’t like it but because I had 0 skills and thought it was just me not being “made” for it. Thanks to you, I’m figuring out how to make things work and how to figure out what products to try and how to use them. The fact that you switch up so often makes me feel so comfortable with the fact that there isn’t one way to do it and nothing in makeup is set in stone. I’m so glad I found your channel ❤
I really appreciate the 'why' you do what you do. Every face is different and your explanations help us understand what might work/not work for our structure. As we age our temples start to hollow so I steer clear of putting any contouring in that area. Thanks for another short but super informative video ❤
This is my favorite and most practical contouring tutorial! I have a super pale and sharp feature face and all other contouring makes me look crazy than flattering to draw multiple lines all over my face. Thanks for this and I love your sense of humor😂
I think I change my contour weekly. 😂 But I think I have you to thank for that, because you made me realize that makeup should be fun and free and that there isn’t a “best” routine and that we should be asking ourselves why we’re doing what we’re doing. ❤
This looks really, really good. I really like the shape of each contour, and I feel like I could literally incorporate that exact cheek contour into my routine. Love the shape of it. I'm always changing my contour routine; I'm 27 and I still don't know what I like best after like, 13 years of doing makeup. My face is so square and my jaw comes down so far on either side I have a hard time figuring out exactly where I like my cheek contour- the super high cheek contour that has been popular can kinda look weird on me sometimes, but then if it's too low it looks really bad too. I'd imagine if I saw myself on camera frequently like you do I'd change it even more often, lol.
Please do these videos but with powders too! I do better with powder contour then creme. I think I'm too heavy handed and it takes longer to blend, which my arthritis hates 😭
I just can' t with you!!! 😅🤣😜🥰. You can' t stop exploring contouring, (I already told you) you will never stop. *AND I AM LIVING FOR IT. EVERY THUMBNAIL LIKE THIS ONE GIVES ME YEARS OF LIFE.* From my own experience, Anelochka, the next step is becoming an anatomy freak and learn every single skull bone, muscle, nerve and vein😉. Sending a virtual kiss right in your left parotid gland😘.
I'd love to see a contour video (maybe you doing someone else's makeup?) on someone with a fuller, rounder face. Like how to make it less full/round if that's the persons goal. ❤❤❤
lol you have to realize that there’s zero pressure to have a consistent makeup routine like the whole point of watching a channel is to see different content each time and to see into other peoples lives.. we watch this because we love YOU and we love the things you make. don’t feel guilty for changing your routine- because at least to me it’s infinitely interesting
Thanks for sharing this! Makes the idea of contouring accessible for me as a 41 year-old whose face has changed over the past few years. I rarely wear foundation and never did in my 20s or 30s. Age is doing a funny thing to me 😂. This shows me how to give my face depth without a lot of product.
changing your facial structure with contour shapes is so fun, especially since you can switch it up and create new shapes and illusions whenever you want :)
When you do these contour videos can you please add a before and after at the end? Obviously your blending is so seamless that the contour isn’t really visible, so if you show a before and after snapshot it might help us see what it’s achieving. I’m such a “more is more” person (the dreaded too much gene!) so I’m inclined to put on way too much and then it doesn’t look natural. If I keep blending then I can’t see it (which is kind of the goal) but then it feels like a waste of time. Ugh. I should do before and after pics of myself now that I think about it. Lol
I did different exaggerated highlight/contour on each side of my face, section by section until I found what looks best with my face shape. I have a very found face with chubby cheeks and was surprised most by the best cheek contour placement.
Well I'm glad you see the errors of your last video because I'm an artist and I know how to bring forth and recede features through light and shadow, and when I watched that skull contouring video you made, I was like oh hell naw. Heh! But the skull idea is right, because you have to consider the bone underneath to know where to emphasize shadow areas. Okay, so creating those little triangles down by your jowls is actually emphasizes them because you've basically made little divots to emphasize the roundness of the jowls just below your cheeks... If you want a chiseled bone structure look you need to draw straight line, not those triangles. You've actually just emphasized the roundness of your cheeks and brought out your chin as a different structure, like a W shape. To have a chiseled chin line, you need to draw shadow over the very bottom of the cheek straight down to the chin in a very straight line (cover the light of the bottom jowl). Contour is usually used to make the face look gaunt (thinner), so if people do not need to do this if they already are thin or don't have youthful looking faces because it is round or they are overweight, it's going to make you look old. To me, contouring or adjusting any feature is to compensate for something that's not already there it's not something everybody has to do. Fat makes us look young, that is the irony about this whole buccal fat removal trend which is absolutely awful they are literally making themselves look way older and they're going to regret it in the end
Thanks a lot for the video. I am truing to figure out what works for my face. And currently I am a bit confused about placement of bronzer over contour. Can you please do a renewed bronzing routine
”This check just looks better, cause it’s my better cheek” Thanks for saying that!!! I‘m always confused as to why my cheeks do not look equal when contouring. I’m quiet new to the contour game and I‘m trying my best! Your videos are amazing!
It actually makes sense that your contour would change all the time. Not only are you learning new techniques from others, like you said, but also your face totally changes depending on your weight, your hydration levels, how much sleep you get, your hairstyle and it definitely changes as you age. Now that I’m in my 30s I scoop my cheeks out more and I don’t do the temple contour anymore because it makes my face look thinner and I want all the thick plumpness now. Lol. Thanks for sharing! I always like seeing other people’s methods.
Hello, I agree with the precious comment, you did not lie. You learned a new technique & shared it with your audience. I cannot wait to try it tomorrow. You look lovely before & after 😍. Thank you 😊. Cheers 😉🌷
I have to change my contour every time I have a weight change bc my face change a lot if I gain or loose, even if is just a bit. But I like to put just a dot under my cheek bones and then blend it. It made a huge change to me and as I saw your routine, it makes the same efect with less product. And I want to thank you for the advice to put contour under your jawline to the neck. It made a lot for my final result. I never saw anyone else doing it like that. Thanks for your channel.
Nice video as always, see you in 2 weeks for your new contour routine :D I don't know why but I would want tips for wearable dewy / wet eye looks. Most photoshoot will use gloss, vaseline, stuff that doesn't last, and shimmers can often look like plain metallic, not wet, so I'd be curious to see your take on this (:
Soft. Beautiful. With the rise of instagram came a want of “glowing to the Gods” and “chiseled sharp enough to cut” your eyes. It was beautiful. Natural is beautiful. Editorial looks are beautiful. No makeup faces are beautiful. I’m here for every version! 🎉
It does look nice on you. What seems strange to me is that people pay for filler in their temples because as we age, our temples hollow out. I was watching video clips of before and afters of filler placed in various places and temples are a pretty popular placement. When you go to do the eye-lifting contour, you're pretty much placing it right in your temples. It looks fine, it just seems counter-intuitive when people are paying hundreds of dollars to make their temples look fuller. I've been working on figuring out placement for an eye-lifting contour but am never quite sure where to put it because I want to avoid looking older because of a hollowing effect. IDK it's confusing! 🤣🤣🤣 It looks good on you, and so I'm even more confused now. 🤣🤣🤣
I watched a makeup artist recently reacting to a TicTok video covering contour placements. He said doing the line to connect the cheek and lower jaw can definitely help make a rounder face longer in appearance but be careful with placement. That contour shaping and placement is used in theater makeup to “age” characters. To which I thought back to that drawing board with Alex! 😂
Can’t wait for this cuz every time I also follow your new contour routines I get compliments on my beauty… which is only attributed to makeup but I’ll take it!!
Mmmmmmmhm mhm mhm, the power and technical precision of facial sculpting, my favourite topic and your explanations are always 👌💯👌 ❤️❤️❤️ the slightly higher placement! Im a firm believer of a brontour almost top of cheek placement with a really warm almost toffee blush ... on bare skin?? Oooof, changed my game foreverrrr 💯
I’m 42 and the little jowls have formed and I’ve always placed contour there. It does help. I also don’t bring things low because of watching your blush placement video, it just made sense to do the same with my contour.
YES. The past shape aged you in the way that buccal fat removal seems to be aging so many girls nowadays... It gives a skinnier look, but in the "my skin is shrinking due to age" kind of way. I used to be very thin due to an eating disorder and it was literally the same thing.
Also, great reminder that it depends on our face shape. I have an oval shape and those bits next to the chin are a big no, as it would elongate me. But the rest can look good sometimes.
Using a gua sha while applying skincare can drastically depuff the face and define the bone structure. I've tried it myself on jawline and cheekbones before makeup. Just make sure the gua sha and you skin has plenty of serum or moisturizer when gliding over the skin. It will make you look 10 lbs lighter within the face. Lymphatic drainage is amazing! 😘
+1 for sticking with bad routines after convincing oneself that they're working as intended, changing a "signature" routine monthly AND taking product from one side of the face to the other for symmetry lol Idk if other MUAs go through the same but it's funny to see one talking about these little things that sometimes cling to our minds.
You and I have very similar face shapes. I took up the skull method after your video on it. A few weeks ago, I started feeling like it was aging me too and switched to nearly the exact thing you're doing here! Sometimes I think my cheek/jowl area seems too puffy and I think contouring that area (as much as I was with the skull method) looked so unnatural on me. Like I really deny I have a round/diamond face and will try to make it look angular when it's just not lol.
i learned a bunch from your skull contour routine. And i don't consider making a mistake or changing your mind or learning from past actions a lie. that said, I've learned that to find the best place for my cheekbone contour is to feel my cheekbone and press in with my forefinger horizontally on the underside of my cheekbone. When I feel the cheekbone, there'll be a place right under it, where my finger kinda locks in. Ths is the place where you put your contour in this video. Today, this is where I think the best contour for cheekbones should go. And I've been putting the temple contour where you put yours, but the shape I've been making makes bottom of the temple contour line parallel to the cheekbone contour. Something about the negative space between the two contour lines (despite the contaour lines actually being the negative space, but for these purposes, we'll just go with this term here) makes the cheekbone and associated blush/highlights really pop.
And, I've been experimenting with adding a lighter contour color above the deep contour color on the cheekbone in helping with the 3D rendering effect :)
I know that you don't usually contour with powder alone, but could you do a powder contour video? I can't use creams/sticks on my skin but I don't know how to get my contour game up with a brush bc everyone only does videos for creams and sticks.
I also do not bring my contour line too far down. I actually don't bring it past the imaginary hortizontal line of my nose base. Like if I lined up a pencil horizontally under my nose across my cheeks. I don't go past that line. And I also bring the jawline contour up on those little jowl areas too. And highlight the chin with a little dot of lighter concealer to strengthen it and bring it out. That little sof padded spot below the fold under the lower lip.
The skull contour is how I was taught to contour for men. Did you ever do it on men? It helps to create a stronger jaw line on men so I was really confused when I started to see women begin to contour this way. Thank you for revisiting this technique! Love your chanel!
Skull contour doesn't work for me. But the temple contour is the bomb. Also, that lips contour. I don't use many coloured lipsticks and stick with light nude glosses, but it still looks very good I started to like contouring after your videos.💜💜💜 Please, always update us on your routine.
Honestly I wasn’t gonna click this video, I don’t follow you and have never seen you before, but this video popped up in my For you page and I wondered about the title + thumbnail, it’s titled I Lied but it looked like a makeup video? So I ended up clicking it after I went into your page and saw that you did makeup, and *goddamn I’m happy that I did!* The thing about doing a double chin when you’re doing your jawline contour, I have Never thought about that! I have done makeup for almost 9 years and educated myself to be a makeup artist, I quit after 2 years bc the teacher didn’t teach me anything knew, turned out I knew more then her._. Also the principal kinda harassed me, made my teacher tell me that I couldn’t wear the shorts I was wearing anymore bc they were too short and therefore distracting.. old man with wife and kids, I was fkn 16.. it was the warmest summer in a Good amount of years and they were normal short length, not Short short.. so yeah I switched school and education, but anyway, I know a Lot about makeup, been teaching myself in my free time, I have a Lot of fkn makeup, it’s taking over my bedroom… literally have makeup on the floor atm😅 *But I have still, under all my years, Never heard of this technic:0 and it makes So much sense!* *So I’m gonna subscribe, hit the bell, watch the video till the end* (that almost rhymed haha) *and I have added this video to my makeup playlist but also my 2023 inspo playlist, and I just want to say thank you for teaching me something new today!🥰❤️ Brilliant and wonderful video! And you seem really sweet🦋 Thank you again!*
Yeah... I feel like every time I choose to do contour I do it differently each time 😂 I also cosplay, so each character needs a different contour, so that doesn't help either. I don't have a set contour routine and I think that's ok, lol.
I totally love this technique. Know you say our face is round but I see more of a heart. But at any rate, MINE is a true round with the chin issue. I tried the skull technique but result was too much product and too muddy. I agree that putting the vertical line down on the "marionette" portion of face was a total fail for me. It is totally possible to over sculpt, lol. This technique makes so much sense. I have one of those brushes and am enjoying it. If you think of it, which Fenty stick color do you use? We are same skin color but I noticed there are 2-3 Amber shades. (Cool, warm, etc.) Thanks!!
Bk beauty is by Lisa J here on UA-cam! Love her and her brush designs but I didn’t realize I also dropped it a lot when I first used her brushes cuz I do my makeup on the carpet floor lmao. I will deal with the learning curve for that lux feeling handle though xD
Every time you change your contour I think "Yeah, totally...this is the best one ever!" Every. Time. 😆
😂 Same 😭
Your face will change, a lot…..contour journey is for life…..you don’t lie…….you learn and adjust…..we love you soooo much!!!!
Yes 👍

Omg yesss, do like a super intense contour vs a softer contour, and then take it outside in natural light? that would be so cool
You blend over those dark lines with foundation/concealer
Perhaps because they’re going for a LOOK, and the LOOK doesn’t involve looking…. Natural. Or maybe they don’t fully understand the purpose of contouring. Or they don’t have good lighting. thank you girl. skull contour would not work on my round face cause there isn’t much structure to work with… THIS might work and i am exciteddd

I love BK Beauty brushes. The owner, Lisa, is so sweet and donates some of the proceeds to charity. ❤

Thank you
You are such a freaking artist dude. I learn everything from you. Thank you 🙏

Helpful and that shirt with that background- perfection
The "Skull Contour" mimics a Buccal fat removal surgery... Which makes EVERYONE look older. It's not my jam, though.

Nice video as always, see you in 2 weeks for your new contour routine :D
I don't know why but I would want tips for wearable dewy / wet eye looks. Most photoshoot will use gloss, vaseline, stuff that doesn't last, and shimmers can often look like plain metallic, not wet, so I'd be curious to see your take on this (:
purple blush!?!?!?!? yes i would totally wear!!!!!!! loved this look and i’m loving the lizzo vibes
I love this - so nice for real life too!! Very natural
Just wanted to say: your eyebrows look extra perfect today
What did you doooooo?
friggin therapeutic... i felt like you were telling me to be intentional in general in life. Also, looking beautiful! ^-^
Soft.
Change is the only constant 🙏
I'm *just now* learning to contour (im 27 lol) so keep the contour updates coming :'D
Mmmmmmmhm mhm mhm, the power and technical precision of facial sculpting, my favourite topic and your explanations are always 👌💯👌
❤️❤️❤️ the slightly higher placement!
Its a journey, my dude. Ride that contour wave 😎
Teaching yourself teaches us!😁
I’d love to see how you combine your contour with bronzer & blush. I keep getting it a little muddy looking! 🤦🏻♀️
You should set your contour with translucent powder then it won’t look muddy
@@morsala858 Ohhhh!! I'll try that!! Thanks!! 🙏
Love the contour on top of your glass skin :)
This is so helpful to watch and compare to other videos you have done :)
feel like you always changing up your contour is some sort of metaphor for life actually 😩
Love this evolution! I’m always loving your subtle contour technique ❤
I love your brows in this video Alex!
this is a contour style i can deff get behind, thank you
You’re absolutely entitled to change your make up ways. I love BK brushes. They have some really small ones that are excellent for hooded eyes.

+1 for sticking with bad routines after convincing oneself that they're working as intended, changing a "signature" routine monthly AND taking product from one side of the face to the other for symmetry lol Idk if other MUAs go through the same but it's funny to see one talking about these little things that sometimes cling to our minds.
This is honestly so helpful, thank you
You and I have very similar face shapes.
You are literally perfect
You look beautiful and the color palette in this video suits you perfectly 🙏🏻
Thanks for the help Alex!! Hello beautiful people 💗 I know you all love Alexandra as much as me and appreciate her!! We love you Alex!!
Never stop teaching makeup 💄 fed up with makeup reviewers lol! It’s giving me anxiety 😂 great tips lady ❤
Could u please attach link for your face look today (the foundation, highlighter, primer, etc.). Your skin looks so dewy and fresh! Fabulous channel!

Best contour style yet!

Love the temple dots! Definitely doing that:)❤

I don't use many coloured lipsticks and stick with light nude glosses, but it still looks very good
I started to like contouring after your videos.💜💜💜
Please, always update us on your routine.
Oh yes, skull contour worked for Halloween for me as well.
Ps: I'm watching and commenting xD
I was thinking this , thank you for correcting the info.
Love BK brushes, 109 for foundation ❤
Also the principal kinda harassed me, made my teacher tell me that I couldn’t wear the shorts I was wearing anymore bc they were too short and therefore distracting.. old man with wife and kids, I was fkn 16.. it was the warmest summer in a Good amount of years and they were normal short length, not Short short.. so yeah I switched school and education, but anyway, I know a Lot about makeup, been teaching myself in my free time, I have a Lot of fkn makeup, it’s taking over my bedroom… literally have makeup on the floor atm😅 *But I have still, under all my years, Never heard of this technic:0 and it makes So much sense!*
*So I’m gonna subscribe, hit the bell, watch the video till the end* (that almost rhymed haha) *and I have added this video to my makeup playlist but also my 2023 inspo playlist, and I just want to say thank you for teaching me something new today!🥰❤️ Brilliant and wonderful video! And you seem really sweet🦋 Thank you again!*
Yeah... I feel like every time I choose to do contour I do it differently each time 😂
I also cosplay, so each character needs a different contour, so that doesn't help either. I don't have a set contour routine and I think that's ok, lol.

There's some 'spam' contacts going on. Usual prize stuff. Beware!
What eyebrow product did you use? Your brows look great!
(Cool, warm, etc.) Thanks!!
so true...you are definitely my new fav. make up Queen❤ Sudbury Ontario 🇨🇦
this is what happens when an artEEST who understands shading makes face art. love.

Bk beauty is by Lisa J here on UA-cam! Love her and her brush designs but I didn’t realize I also dropped it a lot when I first used her brushes cuz I do my makeup on the carpet floor lmao. I will deal with the learning curve for that lux feeling handle though xD
