My UA-cam tip: if someone posts a video and you watch it to the end, hit the damn like button. It held your interest that long. The creator spent more time than anyone else will ever know. Hell, even hit the thumbs down. The algorithm only looks for interaction. If you like a thing, comment your favorite part, most interesting, what more you would like to know 🤷🏻♀️. Imagine how much better our world could be if we lifted each other instead of hurting each other.
I love this! One of my fave creators to watch said in a video last week that people have repeatedly comments they dislike her NOSE. It made me so upset, still it aggravates me. Like first of all… that’s stuff you keep in your head if you must think it all. Also, what’s she supposed to do about that? I find it so fucking. Cruel. They comment negatively on how she does her makeup which I absolutely love. Every time she says something of the sort I just hurt physically. It’s so so cruel. You’re right though it’s a small miserable majority. I’ve been in the restaurant industry for 20 years and have experienced different examples but similar nonetheless. Great video!!! I check to see the foundation you’re wearing I was like OK rimmel. 😊
So here's the thing. If you had the chance to be kind and potentially make someone feel better about themselves, why wouldn't you? As for content creators, I think a lot of people don't realize how much thought, planning and work goes into their 30 to 60 min video. And honestly I see beauty and value in every single UA-camr I watch, whether it's their humor or knowledge or the simple beauty of their bare face like you.

I think it’s vital (when on the internet) to ask yourself, is this for me. And if the answer is no, that’s ok. It’s like going to a restaurant and nothing on the menu looks appetizing. I don’t go harass the staff telling them that they should have something I want. I just leave with a smile and go eat food I want. Everyone doesn’t need to be notified that I wasn’t satisfied with the menu. If it isn’t for you, it’s ok to just move on.
Always love your rambles and deep thoughts type of videos. It basically boils down to: Don't be a jerk Click, listen, and read before jumping into the comment sections. Don't make assumptions Don't be easily scammed Don't be emotionally reactive

When I was depressed I used to get into internet arguments a lot. I think there was something addictive about depression so I would constantly interact with things that would make me upset.

I only recently started leaving comments on my fav UA-camrs videos like this year cause I fear I probably come off as awkward (because of my social anxiety) but also UA-cam comment sections are just kinda intimidating sometimes. I’ve always been more a Twitter person and even then I mostly stayed in the bg. I feel like here on your channel people seem to be nice for the most part but some sections of YT are brutal. Also, yes the scams feel like they’re at an all time high right now. I can’t leave a single comment on a big UA-camrs video without a bot replying 😭. So annoying. Anyways, I think you made some pretty good points in this video. People do seem to confuse the relationship between viewer and UA-camr cause they either act like they’re besties with the influencer and are entitled to know everything about them or treat them like celebrities and talk very harshly about them cause people are a-holes who say celebs asked to be criticized and hated simply because of the fact that they’re famous. This was an interesting talk and I would enjoy seeing more videos like this with a discussion while you do your makeup.

The FIRST time I ever saw a scam bot was on your video 😆 I was so excited! And I wrote "Is this real?" And other people told me "No". 🤭 i felt so stupid...but...Now I know! I find it interesting that you find people's behavior "interesting" even when they're being terrible! You have such a deeper understanding of the human psyche and don't take things personally. Great advice 👏 My advice would be to give small youtubers a chance xD I think people instantly think "low views and low sub count = bad content" and it's not always the case.
i personally don't interact with videos that much - i used to, but i don't do it anymore. but you explaining what some people think / do just baffles me. people who just react to the title of a video???? WHYYYY? idk i guess i have my reasons for not interacting a lot and choosing consciously what i watch and what i don't watch... thank you for these "tips", i feel like they could be really useful to younger people with less experience and scepticism

I pretty much exclusively use my subscription page as my “home page” on UA-cam so I only see content from creators I’m subscribed to. Otherwise I would definitely miss uploads because the algorithm is not great… 🤷🏼♀️

When I’m having a bad day, I try to compliment and thank people around me or write kind messages, it helps my mood. However; One time I commented “F*CK the I.R.S” on a finance channel, first & last negative comment I’ll ever leave. It got 15k likes and then I got shadow banned. 😆😂 Good times.
I hate how UA-cam floods with a subject after I watch one video. It helps me to clear it off my history. That's the only way I get it to stop. I also find fave channels get unsubscribed. A LOT. I don't know why or how to stop this. Thanks for your tips!

The one thing I always feel sad about is when all the products are on the description, except that one brush I really would like to get. I never comment on it for the obvious reasons that they might never see it, probably discontinued or so old that I'm the only one who doesn't own it. As a semi-rational person, I always thought that most people were rational and commenting (plus the crazy ones with the garbage comments).
Very tactfully said. It's a shame you even have to say it, but you handled it well. The part about the description box irritates the heck out of me and I'm not even a creator! Most people have detailed, linked, info in the description box. Read the description box!
I am definitely guilty of posting a comment before a video is done. Usually out of sheer excitement lol. It's good for everybody to be reminded that the internet should have etiquette just like any other interaction in life. I've also definitely said something snarky on a bad day and you are right, it's not ok to carelessly hurt others like that. Don't let the pettiness of that minority of mean people get you down because you are awesome and I know at the very least my day is better when I watch your videos. Great video! One extra tip if you want UA-cam to show you a wider variety of topics: make lists. It used to be a bigger feature but it’s still useful. Make as many lists as there are topics you’re into and add a couple of videos in each that illustrate that topic and the algorithm will know to show you more of it. PS to follow the last tip, don’t forget to set your lists to private if you don’t want people to know what you’re into when they click on profile.

Hi Alex. Could you do a brief segment on the best way to light your makeup station if you are not filming and just doing your everyday makeup. I have several challenges. Firstly I don’t really understand much about electric light v natural light/shade etc and mirror positioning. I also wear glasses for reading and obviously can’t wear them when doing my makeup. I really appreciate you making this video. I have just a few people I watch and I want to do the things I can that helps them out but I am definitely one of the people who does not live my life on the internet. I always like the video and have started leaving a "thank you" type comment but what exactly should I be doing to help out the creators I love to watch?
These are all really good tips. I think I get sloppy with comments at times because I am lazy and just wanna add a comment to show a channel love. It's like a rhetorical comment. I had a youtube channel back in the olden days when youtube was new. It was hard for me as a content creator to get enough head space from my subscribers and random who would comment. What you do is really hard. I watch your videos all the time. Your makeup looks particularly beautiful here.
I feel like as I mature, so does my youtube feed, even for a controversial thing like Kpop fandom war, they still remain pretty civil for the most part. However, on Facebook it's totally different story, I read comments cyberbullying the Kpop idols every day (glad they will never have to see those), and also some of the most click-baity shit ever on the recommendations tab. But it's good for memes and keep in touch with friends, so cannot leave it.
Very true, often the cruel people on the internet are simply the loudest, not actually the majority. I've been a fan of kpop for about 10 years now (which seems very random but i PROMISE I have a point) and I think that side of the internet is a huge example of this. Hostility seems so rampant, often "kpop fans" are viewed as synonymous with "toxic". So I see a WHOLE lot of this and interact with a part of the internet that is known for it. I was a silent viewer on the internet for so so many years, always sick of these hateful, combative people on the internet being the loudest. A couple years ago or so I just decided "Fuck it, I'M gonna be loud too. But with kindness. Or at LEAST neutralness." As a silent viewer I would always invisibly cheer for those who were kind, respectful, and positive on the internet. So I figured I'd just try to be that person instead. Not in an insincere way. And I never seek out arguments because honestly, who has the time? But just talking to people who respond hatefully to me as though they are people seems to be the best way to make them sort of "wake up" and realize their behavior. If it's someone having a bad day then often all it takes is not being inflammatory in response to make them completely change how they speak to you. Or if it's a troll, then not taking the bait and speaking to them kindly often just makes them disengage. Anyways, these are just my thoughts and experiences from a former lurker who's been on the internet for a long time now.
The assumptions problem is so real. Even in comments, I've had people randomly assume just a ton of shit about me. They seem to think they know my life and all my opinions and stances from a few sentences. It's pretty embarrassing.

For the bot thing maybe you could adjust the your comment settings and add Giveaway as a blocked word until YT gets their shit together. Also, my favorite thing to do on YT when I get tired of seeing the same thing is that I start unsubscribing to channels I haven't interacted with for at least a year. It is interesting for me to see how my viewing has changed, and for me I realized I was feeling shitty since I was constantly watching videos methodically.

I find it interesting that you find people's behavior "interesting" even when they're being terrible! You have such a deeper understanding of the human psyche and don't take things personally. That has to be important in your line of work.

Thank you for this video. Its important to always remember we all have feelings and UA-camr and no different. Comments are easy cause there is a clear separation through screens. But they hurt just as much as face to face.
I am one that doesn't come on UA-cam often. I use it to listen to music and to watch you and one other makeup girl. I still get notifications. And even if I didn't ill always come check your channel! I pretty much exclusively use my subscription page as my “home page” on UA-cam so I only see content from creators I’m subscribed to. Otherwise I would definitely miss uploads because the algorithm is not great… 🤷🏼♀️

When I’m having a bad day, I try to compliment and thank people around me or write kind messages, it helps my mood. However;
One time I commented “F*CK the I.R.S” on a finance channel, first & last negative comment I’ll ever leave. It got 15k likes and then I got shadow banned. 😆😂

The one thing I always feel sad about is when all the products are on the description, except that one brush I really would like to get. I never comment on it for the obvious reasons that they might never see it, probably discontinued or so old that I'm the only one who doesn't own it.
As a semi-rational person, I always thought that most people were rational and commenting (plus the crazy ones with the garbage comments).

I am definitely guilty of posting a comment before a video is done. Usually out of sheer excitement lol. It's good for everybody to be reminded that the internet should have etiquette just like any other interaction in life. I've also definitely said something snarky on a bad day and you are right, it's not ok to carelessly hurt others like that. Don't let the pettiness of that minority of mean people get you down because you are awesome and I know at the very least my day is better when I watch your videos. So thank you for making videos all the time!

One extra tip if you want UA-cam to show you a wider variety of topics: make lists. It used to be a bigger feature but it’s still useful. Make as many lists as there are topics you’re into and add a couple of videos in each that illustrate that topic and the algorithm will know to show you more of it.
PS to follow the last tip, don’t forget to set your lists to private if you don’t want people to know what you’re into when they click on profile.

Hi Alex. Could you do a brief segment on the best way to light your makeup station if you are not filming and just doing your everyday makeup. I have several challenges. Firstly I don’t really understand much about electric light v natural light/shade etc and mirror positioning. I also wear glasses for reading and obviously can’t wear them when doing my makeup. To combat the algorithm, I've turned off my watch history. Made UA-cam experience so much better.
These are all really good tips. I think I get sloppy with comments at times because I am lazy and just wanna add a comment to show a channel love. It's like a rhetorical comment. I had a youtube channel back in the olden days when youtube was new. It was hard for me as a content creator to get enough head space from my subscribers and random who would comment. What you do is really hard. I watch your videos all the time. Your makeup looks particularly beautiful here.

I feel like as I mature, so does my youtube feed, even for a controversial thing like Kpop fandom war, they still remain pretty civil for the most part.
However, on Facebook it's totally different story, I read comments cyberbullying the Kpop idols every day (glad they will never have to see those), and also some of the most click-baity shit ever on the recommendations tab. But it's good for memes and keep in touch with friends, so cannot leave it.
Very true, often the cruel people on the internet are simply the loudest, not actually the majority. I've been a fan of kpop for about 10 years now (which seems very random but i PROMISE I have a point) and I think that side of the internet is a huge example of this. Hostility seems so rampant, often "kpop fans" are viewed as synonymous with "toxic". So I see a WHOLE lot of this and interact with a part of the internet that is known for it. I was a silent viewer on the internet for so so many years, always sick of these hateful, combative people on the internet being the loudest. A couple years ago or so I just decided "Fuck it, I'M gonna be loud too. But with kindness. Or at LEAST neutralness." As a silent viewer I would always invisibly cheer for those who were kind, respectful, and positive on the internet. So I figured I'd just try to be that person instead. Not in an insincere way. And I never seek out arguments because honestly, who has the time? But just talking to people who respond hatefully to me as though they are people seems to be the best way to make them sort of "wake up" and realize their behavior. If it's someone having a bad day then often all it takes is not being inflammatory in response to make them completely change how they speak to you. Or if it's a troll, then not taking the bait and speaking to them kindly often just makes them disengage.
Anyways, these are just my thoughts and experiences from a former lurker who's been on the internet for a long time now.
I absolutely loved this. This video is a perfect lesson in modern internet etiquette.

Also, my favorite thing to do on YT when I get tired of seeing the same thing is that I start unsubscribing to channels I haven't interacted with for at least a year.
