#CoryWong #DirtyLoops #Thriller
INSANELY talented band that never fails to put me in a great mood. Grooves to die for. And they always look like they're having the time of their lives.
YES!
Been listening to these guys for the past 11 years. What really hit me on this particular song is, that they did the HORNS arrangement, which is absolutely masterful.
Both Jonah and Aron have a degree in composition and the group makes it own arrangements, but on this, to my understanding, the leader of the horn section - whose name I don´t recall - was involved too.
That drum set is miked so well. And if you listen carefully, you will notice that Jonah is actually switching back and forth between the singing styles of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. Another tidbit: read the credits at the end. You will notice that Aaron is not only a (very) accomplished drummer, but also a talented video editor.
Oh wow Robert! Did Aaron edit that vid!?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums If you check their credits, Aron is always listed as the video editor, sometimes together with Simon Petrén (who does the mixing). Also, in the latest episode of Cory Wong's podcast, he has Henrik Linder as a guest, and also talks a bit of how they filmed and edited the videos for this album. They're not even on the same continent while filming this, so massive editing job there, I guess (even though I know absoiutely nothing about video editing, so I might be completely off here).
@Lotta Wiklund seriously? They aren't even on the same sound stage?
@@Chef316 No, and it's not the live sound from the filming we're hearing. All the sound was pre-recorded separately, and then Dirty Loops filmed their part in Stockholm, Sweden, and Cory and the horns did their filming in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I don't know how Cory Wong usually records his stuff, but Dirty Loops doesn't record sound together as a group. They start with a simple keyboard background from Jonah on which Aron records the drums. After that Jonah adds the proper keyboard stuff, and Henrik writes and records his bass parts based on that. And then the vocals are added last. They are just as good live though. I saw them (DL) this summer and it's absolutely mindblowing how good and tight they are. 🤯
@@lottawiklund8606I never would have guessed that. Aron is a nice person but he never reveals what he can and can't do. Trust me, I know.
That horn section, the arrangement, the execution, wow...
Great reaction. I am totally crazy about the Stevie Wonder type sound and harmonies of Jonah. I do not understand all that rytm things going on so it was very educational to hear your explanations. Love the Brass/Wind section also. Everything is perfect. I have listened to this a 200 times. Will not get tired of it.
You and me both! I can't stop listening to Dirty Loops
This may very well be the highlight of my day....amazing orchestration and performances
My new fave band Phil :)
Drummer is amazing and in the pocket
Love how you breakdown how thoughtful they are with their compositions. They obviously thought out every part but they're so seasoned and talented that I'm sure it was pretty easy for them lol. Just being creative!
The "cinematic part" was so cool and interesting
Totally agree!!!!! So awesome!
That part was breathtaking.
And I don't use that word much. Incredible arranging
"Star Wars" cinematic to be specific.
I am definetely an addict of them since "Phoenix" and I LOVE watching their original vids + the reaction vids. You belong to my favorites here because you are a "controlled fanboy" without losing the analytic part of your musicians brain ;-)
One thing which is a BIG part of the DL stuff is the production level! Although it´s so multi layered and complex they manage to seperate the different parts so well that they create enough room to distinguish every part of the arrangement - brilliant!
Love your reaction Sir! One of the best so far I can really feel how you enjoy it as I do. Also your comments are so good and interesting to listen to.
Thank you!
It's a double nod to MJ. They made it into an almost shuffle like "The way you make me feel". Great performance. Threre are plenty of live videos of them playing on morning TV shows. Loving your videos by the way. Keep them coming!!!
Well spotted Neil!!!
I just love music... I remember hearing Andrew say, u Ever hear a drummer or guitarist that u just know within a second that they are just Amazing.. Well, Dirty Loops would fall into that category of musicians..
100%
I REALLY like this rhythmic rereading, so cool man... and harmonic work is so powerful. Ty for that!
Yes. It's a great reimagining of a classic
It's played in 12/8 beats. In the solo part the base and base drum play like this: Bar no 1 is marked on 3, 4, 7 and 8. Bar no 2 is marked on 3, 4, 6 och 7. And so on. Very sophisticated...
Indeed. Sophisticated is a great word for them
This was freaking excellent. What a voice and perfect drumming 🥁
Agree
In the pocket and his rips are on time.
9:53 Yes, my man! Yes! 😀 Same reaction the first time I heard that... along with the visual presentation... I had to stop for a second to digest what was just offered... then go for a second and third helping.
at 13:40 Aaron does that little 1 bar rhythmic shift to straight 16th notes, which makes me think its in 4/4 16th-triplets (at least the bond part cause you never know with them and their switchups haha) cause I'm thinking that would be harder and more confusing to transcribe in 12/8! :D Awesome reaction! Love seeing your DL reactions!
Yeah man that's what I was thinking, dirty loops (Aaron) is well known for using metric modulation in their songs, wouldn't be a surprise that it's 4/4
Hi from Vancouver Canada (there is a Vancouver, Washington State). I love your takes on Dirty Loops stuff! I love them and love your reaction and analysis! Subscriber from Canada! ❤️🇨🇦
Really appreciated the technical breakdown of the rhythm changes.
Dude... you HAVE to check out their song "Turbo". It's eargasm.
I will Mats!
Yes!! Tackle Vulfpeck next!! And Cory Wong’s solo stuff (if you haven’t already).
Thanks for another great reaction, Andrew!
I will Paul!
While you’re digging into Vulfpack, def need to check out The Fearless Flyers.
@@jeffschroeder8445 Nate Smith is a groove machine!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEBODY TO TELL ME WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITH THE TIMING!!! Thank you sir! Finally someone who can TRULY break down what's happening.
jonah's arrangements are fucking wild! musical fucking genius! why aren't Dirty Loops #1 on every chart? 100% underestimated band.. give em a grammy already
Love it Eirik! They are SO GOOD
Amazing!! And I realy love this reactions, your stile Is unique
The bloodsport meme just about killed me. Thank you editor.
HAHA! YES!!!
Never worry about stopping the video! It’s a reaction channel!
Thanks Darryl!
You know the band is good when Andrew feels he has to apologise for reacting in a reaction video 😀
HAHA!
Gold Luke!
So, today I learned there's such a thing as a double-bell euphonium. Huh!
This whole track is absolutely sick. And I read somewhere that the video was actually recorded separately! Cory and the horns in the US, and the Dirty Loops guys in Europe, and stitched together beautifully.
I heard the same thing from Cory on his latest "Wong Notes" podcast... talking about the whole remote production process (among other things) with his guest, Henrik Linder!
@@michaeldezelar6264 Whoa, awesome! I will have to listen to that one.
11 out of 10, thats a good conclusion!
I thought that was fair!
Finally More Dirty Loops MáS!!!!!!!!!
Yup!
Probably the best MJ Thriller cover ever made!
You can stop the video as much as you like, as a non musician I love your breakdown of what is happening, keep em coming 😄
Thank you!
The evolution of the 9 Muses, the devine abilities on earth. Congratulations
They've released a couple of tracks from the album on Cory Wong's channel as well. Those are instrumental and definitely cannot be called pop. Especially check the video for Turbo out, that was released last Friday. It is RIDICULOUS! I can't stop listening to any of the instrumental peices on that album. Stupidly good.
Turbo: ua-cam.com/video/tjaLOk1_aRg/v-deo.html
I love it Lotta. Thank you!
TURBO out funks anything else i've listened to in years, totally funkin unbelievable
Oh yeah, you make my day Andrew.
This is my new fave band Gauthier.
Hot diggity
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Thanks a lot for your react, smiling and obviously having fun, with a lot of kindness and analysis. No doubt you're really a nice guy and a great teacher. I'm so lucky my drum teacher have the same human and teaching qualities as you.
I'm so glad you finally receive your UA-cam reward. ;) You deserve it.
That, my friend, is a double belled euphonium.
That's what she said Rodney
Loved this reaction! And thanks for calling out the Tears for Fears similarities, that solved something deep in my brain haha
I need to dig into that and breakdown EXACTLY what Aron was playing
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Try eight dotted eighths or sixteen dotted sixteenths against 12. You show a three against two in the video...seems like the right direction.
Also kind of a clave feel in the 'cinematic' section.
Interesting stuff! it is like more funky feel in this arragement. You can detect what song is the original, but still see differences.
Yes very cool interpretation
👏👏👏🙌👍. Your best reaction so far👍
Wow, thank you
It was great to hear when you captured the the Stevie Wonder is his voice. Kinda of a Micheal Jackson vocal with the soul of Stevie Wonder.
You can’t really appreciate this song u less you are a true musician. I love when a song and music gives me chills.
The talent of this group is a step above your average band and it shows in so many different ways.
Folks may not realize this, but Michael Jackson’s band on Thriller was basically the complete Toto band , so for DL to cover this is even more impressive.
They played on about half the album from memory I think.
Human Nature was written by Steve Porcaro who I had as a guest on my podcast!
Riff is like u would put higher ground from Steve Wonder in thriller cords
Yes Peter! Well said
I got my first album at about 11 years old and it was Michael Jackson's Thrilller. and I still have it.😀
YESSSS!
I just saw this one the other day after seeing your other Dirty Loops / Cory Wong video. This one is also really great. Super tight rhythm section, as always, and I enjoyed the way they made it their own instead of a copy of the original. The band I'm in now does a similar appraoch.
I'd love to hear your band Michael
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Thanks Andrew !!! We're in the process (almost done !) with two EP's and a video. 🎸🎸😏 Thanks Andrew for asking !!!!!!!

After every Dirty Loops song, I have to exhale and rest! They are definitely 110% on every beat. And they do make it all look so casual and fun! Definitely the sharpest drum work on Neil Peart level (yeah I said it). This session didn’t put so much emphasis on bass solos but clearly legendary bass navigating WITH the rest of the music!
Yes I always have a stiff drink and a lie down after watching dirty loops
They are definitely 110% on every beat.....
You are correct on all points!! Aron is damn near Peart!!!
Dirty Loops is a great band! I think the way they played Thriller awesome! If they played it more exact to the original they would of had to buy the rights to the song. Also Cory Wong has to put his subtle touch into everything he is involved with.
I already saw ( or sawr as you say 😆) this performance (not live on UA-cam) I tuned in purley to watch you completely Geek Out. I knew this would get you and the Vandam going. Nevertheless, this track and these musicians are like listening to a studio masterd track, pristine and flawless execution. Enjoyed your reaction and educational commentary. Cheers!
12:16
If anyone is wondering this part is 9/16 subdivided in 4+5
They also a a sixteenth to the last bar leading in to this part so the last bar of the chorus is 13/16.
Fun reaction! 💫
13:00 and just 6/4 with interstating snare placements
Sounds a lot like Higher ground, with that fast pased shuffle, with the very highlighted triplet subdivisions
I discovered these a few years back, all i can say is f@@k me sideways… what technical musicians. The bass player omg he’s some serious groove. Let alone the drummer.
Yes Lee. All of them are monsters
@@AndrewRooneyDrums makes me want to pack in playing. Thats for sure! 😉 great react video as always Mr Rooney 👍🏻
@@lstables83 Thank you!
Glad you dug it :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Yeah, love getting other people's perspective on tracks. Can I suggest you watch Dream Theater - Pale Blue Dot :) If you haven't already.
the most special thing is that Dirty Loops is recorded in Stockholm and Cory Wong and the rest is recorded in The USA! They are not together there. If you look closely you can see that these are 2 different films put together
That's wild Annette
This Thriller is an absolute killer!
Yes Claus! 🙌
It's very Stevie-esque! Could it be that even the "half time shuffle" part is actually a flirt/hommage to Stevies own drumming on Master Blaster?
Nice call!
If you want to really see Jonah's range, watch "Breakdown". Also, the blue haired sax player is pretty big herself. Can't remember her name but I would've expected her to have been listed as featured along with Cory Wong.
Thank you!
Sax player is called Grace Kelly for those wondering!
Grace Kelly is a monster success story in Jazz/Songwriter/Singer. Please check out her videos when she sings. Her voice is remarkable.
OH! I totally agree! It needed something after 'Door Slam'! Yeah. Like a quick horn blast or something. Someone needs to send Rod Temperton an email about that missed jewel. :)
I also missed the door slam :)
HAHA!
i was a baritone/euph player all throughout middle and high school (23 now). i had no idea a 2 bell euphonium was a thing.
It IS Stevie! Excellent!
If you want to check them live, try a song that they covered from Lady Gaga, Just dance...it is mindblowing 💪
I am so happy you see and hear the small things that makes it extrodinary!
About the live version of Jonah Nilsson version of Billie Jean, I still think he is kind of nervous at the concert... And who would not? Still, it's a great performance!
Yeah I thought it was awesome
Sounds to me like that snare is tuned SUPER tight
It's legit perfect
@@AndrewRooneyDrums it truly is. Either through the soundboard or his/tech's tuning but, either way, it fits
they've kinda invented a new form of mash-up in this song. You were referring to his vocals sounding like Stevie Wonder... Well, the whole song is actually rephrased and gets a typical Stevie Wonder Higher Ground vibe. Listen to it again, and you will identify that groove for sure....
As a drummer, you be impressed by Vulfpeck and their us of counterpoint and time changes
Earing people speaking when listening music... It's not easy to watch expressions on the nice faces of these musical analysts who cannot really speak about music better than you. :)
The refence to Pat Metheny in the bridge is obvious and powerful. :)
You look nice anyway ! And cute son !
[edit] Heeyy but I can't count the videos of reactions. This world is insane ! 🤣
Definitely check out Vulfpeck, and all their adjacent acts.
Hi there folks! I am a professional musician / drummer. I have been for 40 years. Before you think I'm going to bore you to death, I am very young at heart and I love pop music. These guys are next level musicians. They took this song and made it something really cool. However, even though I'm not a Michael Jackson fan, I do think that his songs were masterfully designed to just make you feel good. That's what I don't get from this version of the song. Having said that, these guys are insanely good. Holy crap, I love dirty loops!
Thanks for your honest input
Kudos to Andrew for not spoiling The Sixth Sense for some of us.
HAHA Stephen!
That bit at 13 and change reminds me of Michael Giacchino and the Incredibles theme.
Hey kiwi! Good to here you cuz
When I first heard their song Rock You I was like.... OMG... Is that Stevie Wonder!? haha
Right!?
its just based of a 6/8 groove, fits with shuffle and 12/8, like bembe, but the basic pulse is always 4/4, if you studied jazz this is nothing out of the ordinary..
It is not a shuffle, but feels like it.
12/8 yes!
He changes from Stevie wonder to Michael mid song, when he puts the glasses on/changes clothes.
Mind. Blown.
There’s another QJ discovery you should look into: Jacob Collier. He does a cover of “Don’t You Worry About a Thing”… where he does the arrangement, all the instrumentation, all the vocals, and produces the video… at the ripe old age of 19.
I've never seen you take your headphones off as many times as I have throughout this video.
There's so much to take in Samuel
I never noticed it but your right he does sound like Stevie…
I was thinking since I did the 'Follow the light' reaction he sounded like someone...
I'm so glad I got it in the video!
Good call on the “Stevie Wonder” feel to the song.
Yes. Even a bit of a 'Isn't she lovely' vibe with the feel!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums you nailed it again - THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID! (never gets old does it?)
It’s Jonah Nilsson, my man, nobody sings like Jonah. Brian McKnight said “Jonah Nilsson is the best singer I’ve ever heard”, and that’s a pretty damn solid rec coming from Brian. This is a SHUFFLE being played by Aron.
WHAT!?
Where did Brian say that? That's MASSIVE kudos
Since english isn't my first language i sometimes hear "killer filler" and i think it fits!
🙌
Vulfpeck is freaking amazing! You should check It gets funkier featuring Louis Cole
Louis Cole is another BEAST you should check to
Thank you!
Clowncore!!!… but Knower is good too! 🙂
The chord changes at 11:58 in are insane also!!
That's the first thing i noticed when I watch the video for the first time , THEIR MUSICIAN was like DAmnnn THAT'S NASTY.😂
Essa versão é muito boa!!!
The best!
Cool reaction sir 😇❤️😍
🙏
ARON!!!!!! DAMNNNNNNN BRU!!!!!
Love the memes 😂
HAHA! Glad you're diggin' it Phil!
11:37 "The horn part' like the original" - Famous last words
12:49 Not a different time signature (or subdivision). It is however half time. The accents are just never on 1, so it can be a bit confusing first time around. Snare is on 3 though.
13:39 Now this is interesting (there was also a fill leading to the bridge using the same concept). If you imagine this is 4/4 in 8th not triplets, they switch it up to 16th note subdivisions from the 3 to the next 3. Creates this super rushed feeling. But going back to triplets from those 16ths is harder than one would think.
AWESOME INFO!
I need another listen on this one for sure!
sounds like a stevie wonder higher ground/thriller mashup
Great and interesting reaction!
Please react to TURBO with Cory and Dirty Loops. It’s insane!! 😃😃
I will Erik
First of all! The bass line with the effect is crazy!!! Horns, OMG!!!!! ARON is like THE baddest MFing drummer out there. His timing and counter punctual shit is over the top and just maddddd!!! Singer: Johan's voice is AMAZING as always!!!! This is my band bru!!!! I was listening to; Breakdown last night and...OMG!!!!!! DONE.. What timing is this? Its offset of 12/8 but the 4/4 feel!! That's awesome bru!
Dirty Loops and Cory Wong with TURBO NEXT!!!!! hahaha
Coming soon
5:47 BEST MOMENT
Jonah is ridiculously good singer. I think he could sing everything that Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson ever sang combined.
Yup crazy singing chops to go with the instruments
Master Blaster Thriller
Get Sugarfoot to give some input in this version!
Yes!
Okay, 2 things.... well, 3... First, Sugarfoot has Nothing over Aaron. As a matter of fact, Aaron is now my hero! Just Wow! Next, I read a comment that these are actually 2 sessions, filmed on different sides of the "Pond" and then seamlessly edited as 1. If you notice, Henrik and Cory never get close to each other... they stand on different rugs that are angled different. I don't know. I can't tell for sure. Lastly, if you want a sense of the type of music Cory does, watch the Turbo video from the Dirty Loops channel.
If this is 2 vids spliced together I'm gobsmacked
It is indeed filmed on two continents. Listen to the latest episode of Cory Wong's podcast, with Henrik Linder, where he talks a bit about it at the beginning.
12/8. Watch the tenor sax player riding the groove between the bass and drums.
Splitting the beat into threes gives them twice the space to syncopate.
Nice info Terry!
The king of stopping videos
Hey man if you can check out Marcus Thomas and the song samurai… he has crazy crazy drum fills that will make think twist. His footwork is amazing in this song. Im a big fan of him and I think you will b too.
Thanks for the tip!
