Andrew, thanks for posting this, I'm truly honored!
Regarding your questions, I'm trying to answer them.
- I never really practiced with click, before, but I do sometimes these days. And if I'm doing, I'm using a very slow (30-40bpm) way, but playing normally on the top of that.
I was analysing tons of Indian music, when I was young, so I’ve got a massive picture of rhythm quite early and a stable internal clock. I’m not counting, I don’t really play patterns or fixed/planned/orchestrated things. My goal is always being spontaneous and flow as much as possible. And just to feel the music around me. In my had, rhythm has many possibilities to divide.
Regarding the sound. I started working in music studios when I was 15, (I’m playing on more than 500 album till now) so I had many many chances to learn how to tune drums, and how to touch it in many many music genre. It was an amazing challenge to tune up drums on a very traditional jazz way on Monday, on extreme metal way on Tuesday and tune it for a major pop album on Wednesday. All different feels, touch, aspect, etc.
Regarding the dynamics. Took a while to get the same sound on soft playing as loud playing. Noticed that, it needs more and different muscle work than playing loud, because it’s about breaking back yourself. My goal was to be able to play exactly the same thing soft, what I can play loud. It was difficult… Still working on it sometimes…

@@AndrewRooneyDrums I remember on a drumeo clip i think and actually i think you may have even reacted to it...Gergo talks about when he was growing up he would just piece a drum set together out of stuff from around the house and practice that way...the dedication and talent is very inspiring :)

Gergo is just… absolutely mind blowing. Literally no words to describe his playing. I’ve heard him do things I never even imagined being possible, and it’s always absolutely musical in every way. An absolute force, and someone who is bringing the art of drumming forward. Incredible.

Yes, He's insane! I have the honor to met with Gergő at one of his clinics in Debrecen, Hungary about a thousand years ago. I was one of the luckiests who was able to steal a signature from him, too.

This is the next level of drumming. There are so many different angles of perfection in his playing. Lang is the same way. Their skill is not limited to complex licks and fills, but also the science behind the drum's sound and to achieve certain tones and musicality...

amazing drum solo and performance clip, thanks for posting. As for the sound ....indeed amazing, Gergo shure knows how to tune, but for what we hear there is a guy behind a mixing desk for sure we should give our credits too, a sound guy could make you sound worse but also could make you sound wonderful as is the case with this concert.

His mind is unencumbered by trends and fad in drumming. Ths guy is pure imaginative innovation combined with blistering technique.
Individuality is something we would be well rewarded for should we chose to exercise it.
Unfortunately, there are so many copy cats playing the same old same old cliché links and grooves.
I love that he just has traditional great sounding drums, with the snare up nice and tight. No trendy gear, or approaches, just pure excellence in an approachable context.

Hi Andrew, the bass player is Swaéli Mbappé, son of Etienne Mbappé who played with John McLaughin (among others)
