The instrument you were wondering about is a double bell euphonium, and "livet är en fest" means "life is a party" in Swedish, but alludes to a song by a Swedish band called Nationalteatern.

Thanks all for doing another DLoops reaction 🙏
This Thriller is such a feel-good Thriller, and I bet it’s not only because of Henrik’s and everyone else’s secret smiles :) but also because it’s the jazziest and happiest Thriller ever, swung in 12/8.
There is a podcast on Cory Wong’s channel ‘Cory an the Wong Notes’ where he and Henrik talk about the making of this track and the whole rest of the album.
That middle instrumental section where some of the horn players change to the Double Bell Euphonium, the flute and the clarinet, reminds me of a James Bond soundtrack, going from an almost classical music vibe through to full on Big Band jazz.
That db euphonium was around in the earlier days, giving you two different pitch ranges, and they say it also famously was used for smuggling grog into rehearsal venues. It’s lower bell was so big, you could hide a vast stash of bottles in it 😉 (not sure, but so I’ve heard).
It’s rare to see one these days.
And rarer even to see it used in anything other than classical music, or jazz maybe.
And hey, Jonah putting on his shades, making evil faces and then turning into some kind of Stevie Wonder for the outro…!
Henrik and Aron are hanging back a bit in this one- and still they manage to rip my head off.
This is the funkiest, slappiest and jazziest Thriller 🔥🔥😉🔥🔥 and it’s what happens when you let all those guys and girls loose together.
Cory, his horns (some of them members of Prince’s ‘Honheads’) and the Loops are a match made in heaven, I find.
And not to forget, this was made during the early COVID and lockdown years. No gigs, no traveling, no rehearsing together, zilch. So it was all done in many different studios, in at least two different cities, in two different countries, on two different continents….. blows my mind, still 🤯
Glad you got to see this one, guys!
‘Turbo’, the title track from this album, is fire!!
    Keep ‘em coming 👍👍👍

Someone else mentioned it, but that is a double bell euphonium. They ARE a real thing! They were never very popular, and no longer in use, really. I think they stopped even making them back in the 60s. The valves determine which bell you play out of (can't play from both at once). The larger bell is more mellow. The smaller is a little brighter. I've only seen them... never played one.

Jeremy, your 'Vincent Price' cracked ME up!🤣 Personally I didn't care for MJ much, but you can't argue the fact that he cranked out some of the greatest hits in music history, and his music videos were top notch. I love how DirtyLoops changed up the time signature on this, and it still all fits and sounds funky as hell! They really know how to crank it out. This is on a similar level to what The Warning did with Metallica's 'Enter Sandman'.😉 Great review y'all.. thanks!😍👍👍👍

You were looking at a double euphonium. They were invented in the late 1800's and played into the 1950's but now having a resurgence. The instrument being played was an oldie probably from the 30's or 40's. They were especially big in Europe.

It is a Double Bell Euphonium circa 1880-1960's, mostly popular 1910-1930's. They sound great, but only one bell is played at a time with one valve switching which bell is used. Mostly used by Marching Bands and a few devoted soloists. One US Marine Band member stated they use the second Bell to store their gloves when not wearing them.

The time signature is 12/8, rather than the flat 4/4 in which MJ recorded it.
The instrument discussed is NOT a tuba; it is, in fact, a double-belled euphonium… and possibly the only usage of one in a pop tune EVER.
The reason it has two bells is the smaller bell is brighter (like a trombone) and the larger bell is darker (more like a baritone horn). The smaller bell is accessed through a 4th valve which redirects the sound to the smaller bell.

The double belled euphonium was pretty common in European brass bands from 1900 to roughly 1950. Those, and the bands sort of faded away. They never gained traction in North America due to symphony snobbishness declaring them a gimmick. I found one in an old instrument cabinet in high school and started playing. Took a bit to figure it out but it totally outplays a regular euphonium, especially in the higher register where the small bell allows it to soar. You can even play harmony on it as the musician in the video was doing.
