MASSIVE! Thank you so much for the work you put in. I didn't even realize Phazon was a thing, and I'm so grateful for their team and your efforts in showing us how to use our controllers on this game.
could you explain the steps you’re using to an idiot like me please? I’m using emudeck which launches dolphin. How do i get to add this configuration for galaxy only? I should add i am using it docked and use an external controller
I was able to use your provided template and map all the buttons to my Steam Deck! This tutorial is truly a must have for all using Dolphin Emulator. Thanks a bunch mate! This kicks ass 😀
Thanks! I'd like to do more stuff like this but a lot of wii games either have versions on other systems (Kirby/Zelda/RE4) or allow gamecube controller use (Radiant Dawn/Mario Kart/Brawl). If you have any suggestions I'll see what I can do! Maybe Punch Out and/or Super Paper Mario?
Very impressive! When I was getting through Galaxy 2 I had to have 3 profiles set up for all the different things you need to do in it. Had no idea Dolphin was so versatile. Nice tutorial! :)
Thanks for this detailed control scheme. Never owned a Wii so never played Mario Galaxy. Thanks to Dolphin, and ofcourse your amazing video guide, I can play this now with a regular gaming controller.
This is pretty cool, I didn't realize Dolphin's button mapping was so complex. I set up Mario Galaxy on my Steam Deck and it was a pain to get the pointer mapped to the trackpad, this gave me some ideas for other controls and to make sure ball and surf would work.
I didn't realize either until deciding to figure this out. I wish this level of flexibility was available for other emulators but Dolphin seems to be really ahead of the curve in this regard.
I was skeptical at first because of the binds being more advanced but after jumping into the game and playing around for a bit, this control scheme feels really great
Thanks to you I beat Mario galaxy 1 and Mario Galaxy 2 for the first time Have no words to describe how happy I am See this game when I was 8 years old and now for the first time I can play it Thank you so much king👑
You're welcome! And you're correct, I just mapped it to X and Y since they were both unused on the controller. You only need to press one or the other for it to work
If your "point" on "Motion Simulation" is not working it is more than likely because your right analog stick is also configured to the "Gyroscope" on the "Motion Input" tab. He does not go over this in the video so you may happen to pass up on it. You can remove all the mappings on the "Motion Input" tab as it is not needed. Thank you for the video it helped me a lot and I can finally play this game after so many years again.
Dude thank you. Only problem so far is as soon as I get back to the main area and am told to go to the Terrace for the first time it won’t let me “aim” the cursor at the blue star to get to the other galaxies. Any recommendations?
Someone else commented something similar about the aiming but I'm unsure what the cause might be. Another commenter mentioned the terminology changed from "Shoulder R" to "Bumper R", which isn't true for the version I use (5.0-17995) but maybe changing that would fix it?
Thanks for sharing this! However I cannot get pointer to show up when holding L shoulder. In the Dolphin controller configuration it is working as the red dot moves around just fine when holding L bumper... just not in the game. Furthermore, the only way to get the cursor to display is by holding L shoulder and Up Dpad at the same time.... which the pointer is inversed as it is for tilt I assume. Very strange.... What am I doing wrong?
I've seen a few comments with similar issues regarding shoulder L. Maybe see if they mentioned any solutions as it's hard for me to say what the cause could be since I've never encountered this. I would also double check that the syntax matches, maybe something weird happened when importing the file?
Was able to play through the entirety of Galaxy 1 with this control scheme. Moved onto Galaxy 2, and at first it worked fine, but then I got to the first Fluzzard stage. If you hold down on the d-pad, Fluzzard will nosedive straight into the ground. Leave the controller in neutral, and he flies straight, but you can't turn unless you hold down. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but unless there's a workaround, these stages are unplayable.
That's odd, I played through both last year and didn't encounter this issue. Have you tried calibrating the tilt controls in the "Motion Simulation" tab?
@CobraCodex So, it turns out I'm a dummy and I wasn't controlling it correctly. Just tried it again and it works. My apologies, and also thanks for putting this together. Really allowed me to enjoy playing these games again.
I cant get this to work either and its being a real pain, was wondering what you did differently cuz i have the same problem and idk how to fix it. if i dont hold the dpad it just nosedives and i cant go left or right or really control him at all. its so confusing, would you be able to help?
Hey there. The X and Y buttons don't trigger a shake. However it does wiggle the pointer back and forth when i hold the Left shoulder button. I am using a 8bitdo Pro 2 Controller (with XInput) Edit: NVM. im dumb and forgot that you have to unlock it (good video btw.)
Bonjour, je ne parle pas français donc je fais ça via google traduction. La différence est que le fichier du contrôleur est destiné à être utilisé avec une manette Xbox tandis que le KB+M est destiné au clavier et à la souris.
Wow! Thanks for the video, however, when I run the game, my character won't walk. Also, the Motion L and R for rumble don't show up for me unless I change my "controller" (such as from my xbox controller to keyboard), and even still it gives me an extra piece of code next to either L or R when using it. I tried my best to match your settings as much as I could, and these issues are still present. I would appreciate it if you could help me out, thanks!
This worked amazing for me all the way through galaxy 1 and in galaxy 2 until the fluzzard level and i cant fly him at all. ive tried everything and it doesnt work right. the level is unplayable.
That's strange, I played through the entirety of both games with this config and didn't encounter this. It should function the same as the surfing levels (holding down on the d-pad and using the right stick to tilt). The default position does angle down slightly so you could try recalibrating the tilt function if that's an issue
@@CobraCodex yeah i forgot to mention it but when i hold the dpad i can go left and right. but i dont get enough dive i guess. like i cant go down enough so i always just am to high but when i let go of the dpad i just dive down more but i cant go left and right with the right stick. im just wondering about how im supposed to deal with nosediving and being able to control it while going down cuz you kinda need to move left and right while doing it and you dont go low enough when you home the dpad and hold the right stick back to dive.
@@excitedhermit3829 You should be holding the d-pad down the entire time. Mario should start nosediving with no right stick input after a few seconds. If you want a more extreme nosedive you should be able to hold the right stick up and you can slow your descent by pulling the right stick down. If that's not happening I would mess with the deadzone and maybe angle settings under the tilt section.
I set the controls up and they work as expected. But I'm now having trouble getting the Phazon textures to load. I know they're optional, but I like the consistency and have a little guide whenever they pop up during gameplay. They were working on the Ishiiruka build, but then when I had them transferred over to the original Dolphin emulator (it's also running at its latest development version as of this comment), the textures don't load even though they're at the exact same place as instructed.
@@CobraCodex The Game ID is still the same. I can redownload it again and see if that works. EDIT: I downloaded it again and essentially made a fresh install, but the textures still doesn't show. Maybe there was a change in how Dolphin reads the textures?
You have to give phazon the inputs you want it to display in the UI for each input. So for example with my config, I told it to set camera control (which is normally the D-pad) to the right stick. Just make sure the profile you load when playing the game is the original profile, NOT the one phazon generates (which you should be safe to delete, I did and it works fine).
Oh Geez thanks a bunch I want to play Metroid Prime 3 to get ready for MP4. Now that Ive tested your method on Mario Galaxy Rom I can better understand this Metroid Prime 3 controller setup video that only shows the buttons he's using and I have no idea where to put the INI file on MAC
Are you referring to this video or a different one? If you need help with setting up Prime 3 there's a tool called Primehack that works with the trilogy version for Wii
This works flawlessly thanks so much question tho how do you get the controll overlay on the actual games showing xbox buttons instead of wii does it work on gamecube to?
It's through a program called Phazon UI, which is only limited to a select number of GCN and Wii games. Check the readme in the download folder for more info, I provided the UI textures for this game if you want to use those but there's also a link to the most recent version of Phazon if you want to check it out for yourself.
Technically it might since most of the motion functions are mapped, but this config was made specifically for the Galaxy games so I can't guarantee it.
I would compare the syntax to the .ini file in the google drive folder. My first suggestion would be to make sure you're using backticks ` and not apostrophes '. Depending on what controller you're using the syntax might be slightly different as well
I tried this config on a xbox series x controller and my mario would move around on his own despite me not moving the stick, I haven't been able to figure out why. Edit: I figured out why and got it working, great job on the control scheme!
Sorry If this question has already been asked but what did you set point to and what did you set your right and left tilts to. TY for all the help thus far
Point uses this format: `Shoulder L`&`Right Y+` Just replace the `Right Y+` with the respective directions on the right stick. I also have Hide set to !`Shoulder L` so that way the cursor only displays when you press LB. Tilt uses this format: `Pad N`&`Right Y+`|`Pad S`&`Right Y+` As before, replace `Right Y+` with the respective direction on the right stick.
Hi there brother. I have an Xbox controller and have several games like Super Mario Wii and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom on my Android phone using Dolphin app. Could you please help with what controller settings I need to use and change please? Cheers.
The config I provided uses xinput but it shouldn't be too hard to get it working with dinput. Would probably just require changing the syntax for certain button inputs in the config
I would just double check you pasted the right folder into the right location and maybe check that the first 3 digits of the game id (which you can check under the game's properties info tab) matches the folders I provided
I'm unsure if such a mod exists, but you could try messing around with relative input or setting point controls to a mouse/trackpad for more precise aiming.
My best guess at a solution would be remapping the left stick under the extension tab in the controller config menu, maybe there's something off about the syntax when translating to a dualshock 4
I have a question! I’ve only played Legend of zelda Windwaker on dolphin so far, just downloaded Super Mario but the controller does not seem to be reacting to any buttons i press while in super mario (can’t even get further than the menu) but the controller does work in windwaker. Would this video help solve that problem?
It might at least give insight into the way controllers work in dolphin. What kind of controller are you using and which Mario game are you trying to play specifically?
@@diaryofaclementine Sorry for the late reply, I would first check that Wii Remote 1 is set to Emulated Wii Remote and checking that the device in the configuration menu is correct as well. If you're trying to use my config it's also possible there's a discrepancy between the syntax I used and the syntax your controller uses.
Hi dude tysm for the tutorial, however I have a question for you. I set up your controller controls configuration and aslo specified it in the editor, but when Im trying to move the camera to the left and right the game draws a red circle with a bar on the camera icon, preventing me from carrying out that action. Im using an xbox series X wired controller, u have any possible solution or idea on how to fix this? many thanks in advance. EDIT: that seems to be related to the observatory part, I joined a mission and the problem got fixed lol.
hey man you really helped me a lot, but i have just one problem, when i press LB to move the cursor i can't move Mario at the same time, am i missing something in the configs?
That's odd, have you tried removing the "Hide" function under the Motion Simulation tab? You can clear it by middle clicking on it. Lmk if everything functions as intended without that
Hey buddy, thank you so much for showing how to create such a robust control scheme for super mario galaxy! It works great! I was hoping you could help me I was trying to play some co op with my son on one of the lego games? I think it has somethin to do with the Source or Profile in the ini file. I've tried several combinations, but the problem I have is that player 1 controls both players. When I hit jump both characters jump. Any help would be appreciated?
I would double check the "device" dropdown menu in the top left of the controller config for each emulated controller. It's possible both are registered to the same device
@@CobraCodex You're the man!! That's exactly what it was! Thank you so much! Do you know if there is a function that fires when you release a button? The nba games require the player to tilt up and then forward to rise and release a shot. I'm trying to mimmick old style of holding a button to jump and then release to let go of the ball. I got it working by using 2 different buttons one for tilt up and then another for tilt forward. I also tried using the same button and it works when i hit the button once and then let go and hit it again. Thanks again, the emulator has so many options for control schemes!
Thanks dude, really great explanations; but I have one problem, I'm using a PS4 controller and I set up all settings as you did but I can't rotate the camera, how can I resolve this issue?
Someone else had a similar issue using a 360 controller and we couldn't quite figure it out. It could be the area you're in doesn't allow camera control (as is the case for some parts of the game), but worst case it may be a matter of needing to remap those inputs manually using your dualshock 4
It's unlikely that I'd do a video on it, but it looks like the controls should be fairly straightforward to map since the only motion involved appears to be shaking the wiimote or nunchuk.

@@CobraCodex ah ok, i´ll test it out as soon i got time for that. I´ll let you know if it worked.
how did you make that when you hold D up it works for the ball and D down for surfing? I set everything to what you have but it doesnt work
I would compare the syntax to the .ini file in the google drive folder.
Do you mind sharing the solution? I'm having that same issue
@@KoopaTroopa1 My problem was because my Nunchuk stick modifier wasn't at 0, any higher caused my Mario to move around. Hope that helps.
Cheers this helped alot :)
Sorry If this question has already been asked but what did you set point to and what did you set your right and left tilts to. TY for all the help thus far
Point uses this format: `Shoulder L`&`Right Y+`
Just replace the `Right Y+` with the respective directions on the right stick. I also have Hide set to !`Shoulder L` so that way the cursor only displays when you press LB.
Tilt uses this format: `Pad N`&`Right Y+`|`Pad S`&`Right Y+`
As before, replace `Right Y+` with the respective direction on the right stick.
@@CobraCodex quick question, is IR and Point the same? The emulation control set-up between your video and what I see looks a bit different
Hi there brother. I have an Xbox controller and have several games like Super Mario Wii and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom on my Android phone using Dolphin app. Could you please help with what controller settings I need to use and change please? Cheers.
Does this require XInput or can it work with DInput? I use a Mayflash GameCube controller adapter for Dolphin.
The config I provided uses xinput but it shouldn't be too hard to get it working with dinput. Would probably just require changing the syntax for certain button inputs in the config
The Phazon custom textures only replaced the UI in Super Mario Galaxy 2 but NOT in Super Mario Galaxy (1), any possible reason for this?
I would just double check you pasted the right folder into the right location and maybe check that the first 3 digits of the game id (which you can check under the game's properties info tab) matches the folders I provided
@CobraCodex alright it's working now, thanks 👍
Than you so much for this
if your watching this on the newest dolphin as of december 2022 change where it says "Shoulder R" to "Bumper R" its outdated here
thank you
Does it no longer work with Shoulder R?
@@Mark-wb3sb no its outdated but if you chnage it to Bumper R it works
This is amazing
is there some sort of aim assist mod for the cursor?
I'm unsure if such a mod exists, but you could try messing around with relative input or setting point controls to a mouse/trackpad for more precise aiming.
@@CobraCodex thanks
my left joystick wont move mario when i use my ps4 controller even tho everything else works perfectly fine, i just cant move pls help asap
My best guess at a solution would be remapping the left stick under the extension tab in the controller config menu, maybe there's something off about the syntax when translating to a dualshock 4
Controls were too confusing to remap on Steam Deck
I have a question! I’ve only played Legend of zelda Windwaker on dolphin so far, just downloaded Super Mario but the controller does not seem to be reacting to any buttons i press while in super mario (can’t even get further than the menu) but the controller does work in windwaker. Would this video help solve that problem?
It might at least give insight into the way controllers work in dolphin. What kind of controller are you using and which Mario game are you trying to play specifically?
i use a nacon ps4/pc wireless controller and am trying to play super mario galaxy 1!@@CobraCodex
Yea there are some areas that prevent camera movement, glad you figured it out though!
hey man you really helped me a lot, but i have just one problem, when i press LB to move the cursor i can't move Mario at the same time, am i missing something in the configs?
That's odd, have you tried removing the "Hide" function under the Motion Simulation tab? You can clear it by middle clicking on it. Lmk if everything functions as intended without that
Does anyone know how I can setup this profile on my Steam Deck? When I launch the game it does not recognize built-in controllers.
Question for you I have the Dolphin 5.0 MMJ emulator into my phone how to connect my xbox one controller for the super Mario Galaxy
Can you use the phazon textures with an existing HD texture pack?
Yes, you just need to let the phazon textures overwrite whatever exitsing textures it asks about when you paste them into the folder
LOVE YOU BRO❤
Thanks dude, really great explanations; but I have one problem, I'm using a PS4 controller and I set up all settings as you did but I can't rotate the camera, how can I resolve this issue?
Someone else had a similar issue using a 360 controller and we couldn't quite figure it out. It could be the area you're in doesn't allow camera control (as is the case for some parts of the game), but worst case it may be a matter of needing to remap those inputs manually using your dualshock 4
Would you be able to do some similar for Spiderman shattered dimensions 😭 this video is great and I don’t see anything similar for that game.
It's unlikely that I'd do a video on it, but it looks like the controls should be fairly straightforward to map since the only motion involved appears to be shaking the wiimote or nunchuk.
@@CobraCodex wait that’s what tilt controls are🤦♂️. I feel so dumb, got everything working now.
i really wish it was more clear how to actually download and use this control scheme :(
Did you check the readme in the google drive folder? Should have everything you need
