- This video shows how to clean your ABS sensors on a Volvo XC70 Or any other car
The cleaning is similar on many other cars and ABS systems tho
If you need to change the sensors i have a film about that here: • How to Change ABS Sens...

My friend, you used a magnet to reposition the abs sensor screw. Those abs sensor usually work with either a magnetized inner bearing seal or a ring. Bringing another magnet near to the magnetized seal or ring can demagnetize them which will manifest as later as the abs sensor not able to determine if your wheel is turning or not. This can set off abs lights and traction control. Running an obd code will tell you abs sensor not picking up signal and if you replace sensor you will continue to experience issues not realizing it’s demagnetized bearing seal or wheel ring. Both replacement parts not too expensive but can be time consuming because you have to remove rotor and hub. Save yourself a big headache by simply avoiding bringing magnets near those bearing seals or rings. I’m just saying 😉
wrong
A single application of a weak magnet doesn't magnetise the screw, and even if it did it would be very weak, and easily conducted in a tight loop, to insignificant range , by the large mass of steel it grips into... but even if there was a a slight magnetic field from the screw, so what ? The sensor generates the magnetic field anyway and the teeth on the hub causes variations in magnetic field which the sensor detects.
Bollocks
🤓
@@leong108ether way you can just put a small piece of mask tape to the head of the bolt/screw, that’ll make it fit tight in the socket preventing to fall. I’ve found that method better than magnet anyway
On some cars rust on the hub pushes the sensor out slightly which causes the abs to come on unexpectedly and intermittently. Remove the sensor, plug the hole so dirt does not get in (I have used the tip of a q tip) and clean the rust off the hub with some Emory cloth. Shop vac the hole then reinstall the sensor. A little light spray of white lithium grease will prevent the rust from coming back too fast.
Does it ??? Does it have to be so accurate ? I think its the steel particles in the greasy deposits that causes the sensor to be deaf...steel dust in the gunk shorts out the magnetic field... its like the tooth of the axle is permanenty sitting at the sensory.. ie wheel is stopped. so yes a good clean up helps, but not because of the alignment of the sensor.
@@leong108 I think it is sometimes the distance from the teeth not the alignment. Yeah it doesn't take much, like maybe .005" or even less. The holes are pretty tight so the rust pushes the sensor out and away enough to miss picking up on a tooth rather than out of alignment side to side. Then you get that intermittent low speed ABS actuation when you should not. Likewise cleaning junk out of the teeth is not a bad idea but they have to be pretty packed (like out to the tip of the teeth) with iron filings for the same reason.

If cleaning results in it not working do a resistance check on both sides. If you get no reading of ohms on one side it means it is open which is a broken circuit. If the other side say reads 3 M ohms or 5000 ohms or whatever it means the circuit is closed and the circuit is working... Replace the open sensor. If both sides read the same then you could have a problem with your tone ring or wheel bearing which has the the magnet built right into it OR no voltage issue which is another issue to deal with. you can turn your ignition on and check for voltage not on the sensor side but on the other side of the connector(not the sensor connector). Both sides should measure the same voltage say 12 volts or right around 5 volts. If no volts on both sides then you may have a blown fuse. If one side shows voltage and the other side shows nothing(0 volts) then you could have a broken wire. Then you look for broken wire and if that wire shows no break it could still be broke on the inside. Then you need to do a continuity test which is a resistance check for that wire. There is more but I'll stop here' The multimeter is the instrument in these cases. Votage ohms amps etc... is what multimeter is all about. If you don't know what you are doing take it to a back yard or good mechanic. You easily could get screwed on this. You can also get specific scan code readers for abs or airbag for these problems...Any way good luck
After reading this, the offer I have from chain store mechanic to examine everything for $90 seems very reasonable! Especially for one who is not mechanically inclined. BTW I have a Ford Fusion Hybrid. I watched close to 10 videos and could not help but notice they all showed the problem was in the right (passenger side) rear wheel. The last video I saw the mechanic actually stated it occurs there..no explanation as to why though, but could save ya a bit of time and money by starting there.
Can i spray brake cleaner or electric contact deoxidiser spray on the abs sensor?
Great video. Good lighting and clear pictures. Thank you!
This was a really helpful video problem for me is I just booked it in with garage for tomorrow AM, wish I'd seen this b4, I could do this thanks to Kim🤔
Glad it helped
could my abs sensors be dirty ? few days ago the abs lights \ traction control lights\ brake lights came on... was on for a few days it was raining heavy when it came on... it stayed on for 2 days.... then one day it was very cold like 10-F then over night and next day the lights all gone.... the lights has not come back on.... will cleaning it resolve issue maybe ?
Very clear and helpful! Thanks so much!
anything I can learn hands on,god bless,sir💯,
If the dealer wants to replace the ABS module and hydrualic bump for an intermittant ABS light coming on then would you think it's best practice to clean or replace the sensors first then see if the issue is resolved? The module is pricey and the labor is as well.
hard for me to say sometimes mechanics can't be trusted and sometimes they are good.
personally I would ask the mechanic about the diagnos and how they came up with the conclusion that the module and pump need to be changed.
perhaps even get a second opinion from an other mechanic.
Very knowledgeable, even though its not for my car what you explained really helped me what I needed to do qnd answered questions I had cheers!
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
thank you, this was helpful. I had just changed a rear hub on my Subaru and needed to tighten the master screw that holds the rear wheel. I wouldn't have observed this without getting after that rear sensor! Car running good again:-)

Thanks for this video. It is very informative and helpful
Thank you for this info!! I like what you doing make more videos! Bravo great job!
Thank you for the helpful video.
Once a year is planty or when u need pads
Never seen one of these come out without breaking
great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
The ABS system in my Golf is totally different. Plus i could not even budge the damn sensor to take it out for cleaning. Have a feeling i might break it. Everything seems so easy on youtube.
@@Stefan-ps6tl haha.. I know that feeling all to well. A 10 min job end up taking 10 hours due to a damn bolt being stuck..
i removed sensor by wiggling it out with flat head screwdriver.
Thanks, great video.
Explained in a very understandable way. thank you 🙏🌿 Please follow this friend
I have ford explorer sports trac, my Abs was blinking. I don't used my car every day. But the ABS was light. What should I do sir? Can I change new replacement sensor or I need to clean the sensor?
Really appreciated your response.
Thanks
Hi!
Try clean it, and spray some electrical cleaner on the contact, it might help.
Also check the ABS ring, it that one is shot cleaning won't help.
This is Buddy not Nancy, at time 4:00 is when he cleans the sensor. You can also clean it off with brake cleaner and a rag or paper towel. E'nuff said.
Hej Kim, today I changed two tires (back tires) and now ABS/Traction/AWD signal lamp is on. Why is that?
Brother, I have a problem with the ABS, the light comes on but also the unit does not work. The diagnostic shows a problem with the unit, but maybe I should look at something else before replacing the unit? The vehicle is the vw bora. Thank you very much and be healthy
on. my toyota i had some abs issues, the abs engaged in low speed. And diagnostic showed an error.
cleaning the sensors worked in this case. Always wort trying.
Good video. I'd have appreciated it just a bit more thorough that's all.... like if I need to replace it.. then... how... cleaning it with what... if it needs replacing.... the cable as well? or can the sensor itself be replaced?.... any electronics resetting needed? My ABS light comes on... my tester says bad right front speed sensor.... but now I have to check more videos cause to take out a wheel takes a bit of effort and before doing that it would be nice to watch a video with all possibilities mentioned.... ✌
Thanks for you comment!
If you need to replace them check out this video. ua-cam.com/video/4ASMFgXS-yg/v-deo.html
Probably a good idea to check the reluctor ring while you have the sensor out, as they can corrode and crack.
if the sensor is good but just dirty won't it show up as good (not bad) when you scan it. My scanner reads if connection is faulty or shorted.
Help save a lot thanks good video
Nice video my friend
I CLEANED REAR ABS SENSORS BOTH YESTERDAY, BUT IT TURNED ABS AND TRACTION LIGHT ON FOR THE FIRST TIME. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT I MIGHT BE WRONG WITH ?
The car diagnostics computer may have learnt you had removed them for cleaning and flagged the error so that it tells you about that the next time you drove. Clear the errors with an ODBII tool.. or just wait a while..
In Ohio the rust belt this maintenance is required yearly
Any way to spray on a protectant
wd40 sprayed or vaseline on abs sensor for protection?
Quick question if I have a wheel whose tire is squeeking since my Trac off vsc off light came on after a bad snow do you think that's where the bad sensor is??? Thank you and I did subscribe and like...
No. the sensor does not make noise, it cannot squeak, nor does a squeak interfere with the operation the sensor. If you are in a snow area, then you are likely to have damage from collisions AND from corrosion front to back .. so its not worth discussing. you can use ODBII diagnostics to find which sensor is reporting the error. OR clean them all ?
Oh ok, so that's where and how to clean them, Thanks a lot, i have subscribed to your channel . Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing this
But is it not a magnet ring on the axle too? If so can that be worn and replaced?
there is a gear around the axle to if that's broken cleaning a sensor won't help.
Good job man I like your video
thnks for the video bro from Mauritius
FROM CHICAGO EXELENT VIDEO COUSE YOU TALKED YOUR TIME AND GO BY DITELS THANK YOU SO MUCH
Thank you for the information is very helpful , but my highlander 2006 is showing vsc and awd system also abs sensor how do I treat it
Thank you 👍✔️
Very helpful indeed.
Glad it was helpful!
Ok I'm so thankful for you video got a shudder on braking pedal goes right down and bake right at the bottom could that be my censers or abs unit thanks
Thanks very much for your help
I thought you were going to clean it. All you did was get your hands dirty!
I good rain storm will clean them
No
Because the dust is of iron and stuck to the sensor
How does the ABS light goes back off
Its not that easy for kia. Ive had to drive them out from the under side because they hsve been too tight.Have damaged mounting ear trying to remove from top side.
They put that sensor right where it will be difficult to remove if it gets stuck and they often do yours came out easy.
I never had issues to get them out. I think that's where the sensor has to be since it taos readings from the drive shaft. If its stuck you can try pry it of with a flat head screw driver even ad some.penetratibg oil
I agree, also the instructions on keeping the area clean, and not letting dust etc get into the system, I see he didn’t do that by cleaning the sensor over the hole that the sensor fitted in , tut tut .?🤔🤔
It’s mighty car mods Moog’s Swedish cousin 😂
Very useful. Good work
Yes the sensor could be bad but most of the time it can be a indication of a wheel bearing starting to go bad or already KAPUT/ FUBAR
Good thing to keep in mind!
That’s what it was on mine. Wheel bearing
@@pitchforkpeasant6219 Why ? How ? Does the loose bearing mean the sensory gets hit by the moving axle ? Does it get hot and melt the sensor ? Does it loose its grease and thus cover the sensor in gunk that needs to be cleaned ?
@@leong108yes, yes, and yes!
Thanks for the great video.
Glad that you liked it!
Yeah. I'm surprise you don't have a lot of 'Likes'- it's a very well done video.
I have same issue thanks for informative video
A dirty abs sensor can induce a limp mode?
yes. I'm experiencing that now
what cause sound on the ABS pump?
Good video thanks 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching! :D
Thank you for sharing
thank you bro
you didnt actually clean the sensor like the heading says
Hi buddy my ford focus SE mk1 abs light comes on and off shall I do the same to my abs sensors
Its the easy thing to do first.Could be a broken cable or a problem with the ABS teeth near the wheel bearings.)
very good. Thank you
Thank you guy
❤❤❤❤👍
Hello everyone is possible the abs light to be on because of a dirty sensor ?
THAT'S WHAT THIS WHOLE VIDEO IS ABOUT!!!
good job
goog job
A good video
Nice video
Thanks !!
My car steering gets hard when brakes are applied . Is that because of abs sensor
i would say no, that sounds more like some mechanical problem. But im not a professional. feel free to share it when you sigure out the cause of the problem
@@Kim_Alexander thanx alot
@@Kim_Alexander scanner machine reads out that there is some problem in th sensor
My right side rear wheel was hit by a truck is there any probability that the rear wheel speen sensor is damaged in the hub
@@prateekverma7308 if you're car was hit the possibilitys is many. My suggestion is that you get it connect with an obd and read our the codes to see if there is a sensor malfunction.
Besides cleaning the sensor, do you need to spray anything in hole to clean out anything in there?
Not really, the sensor takes reasings from the ABS ring, you could clean that with break cleaner.
If it's worn down you need to replace the ring.
At 4:21 you throw the dirt back in the speed sensor reservoir 🤣.
look at that, sharp sight :)
It's not a big deal tho.. The hole leads down to the ABS ring that are just around the hub so no risk of it getting trapped.. :D
I was kidding around with ya. No big deal.😂
@@kingisrael1532 😃🤪😃
I cleaned all 4. But it's not working for me.
to bad,. sometimes something else can cause an error, inspect the rings to see if some is broken
best to just replace then clean.
Na... replace on some cars require that you change the wire harness. sicne front sensors and wires comes as one unit. Defently more time consuming than cleaning them.
My Toyota had a small issue with the abs engaging at low speeds only It went away after some cleaning.. Saved me both time and money.
Thanks Dude
You should use brake cleaner to get it done right
Line clear
I have the same type Volvo
I wonder if my 240 has those same sensors ?
I would guess that the principale is the same on all abs cars abs ring and a sensor.
Kim Alexander my car is non abs in the rear . I don't ever see non abs front wheel sensors for sale .
@@moonglow1158 should be quite easy to have a look. Don't take me for an expert I'm just a glad amature 😀
Did the warning light remains?
The warning light was coming and going. This and cleaning the ground helpt to solve it
@@Kim_Alexander where that ground is located? Probably same location than in my S80
@@KreiviVonGrunt everything clneccted to the negative battery pole is a ground, clean battery clamps ect.
Ground woriers also connects to the engine block, chassis and other points brushing them off with a wire brush makes wonders.
Should probably make film about this
@@Kim_Alexander That would be neat. Could you do video about Volvo ground locations and how to clean them?
@@KreiviVonGrunt I don't own a Volvo at the moment but it works the same on all cars
Is that already clean?
It, wasn't but it was not particularly dirty either.
I would definitely use water and toothbrush to clean that sensor for sure
Abs light came on 1 day after it snowed I think the salt caused it to become dirty
Indeed. But the effect is more likely if they are dirty with all that gunk , the salt plus the gunk is worse than just salt alone.
Did the cleaning but abs light is still on (it comes and goes). What should I do next?
I would check the abs ring then. If it's worn down it might be time to replace it they are prone to corotion
