Just paid £245 ($320) for my local BMW dealer to spend 2 days for diagnosis and replacement of Speed Sensor and front ABS Pulse transmitter! If that wasn't enough of an insult, my biege carpets are covered in muck and the front seat is marked.
For that price I could have bought a diagnostic tool and the sensors, assuming they needed replacing in the first place.
"It always pays to go to an Authorised Dealer.........................NOT!"
Great video, thank you, I'll forward to the dealership!

Nice video on replacing the wheel speed sensors but you never talked about how to clean the tone ring.I'm quite disappointed in that. Your title says ABS wheel sensor replacement and sensor ring cleaning there is no ring cleaning here at all what happened?

IMHO you should have looked down into the hole were the sensor came out of

I must have missed the part where you cleaned the ring ? I had an issue with my E81 where the ring was distorted by rust on the cv joint expanding the circumference that the ring sits on. You can apparently remove and replace just the ring, cleaning the cv outer shell of rust but I decided to change the whole half-shaft instead as I expected rust would return quickly in the UK climate. For a short-term fix I slid a washer under the sensor retaining bolt to position the hall effect probe slightly further from the ring. This worked for me as an expedient.

Exactly what I needed. I had to drill out the sensor and replace it with a new one. The ABS light went off but then my brakes pulsated and the light came back on. I didn't know the sensor was magnets so I most likely left some metal shaving in the slot that caused it to go on and off intermittently.

Just putting it on the contact surface which will be the mounting flange. That will ensure it is easy to remove but you aren't coating the whole sensor body which would just pick up dirt.

Front end or rear? If it's the front the you might have a tone ring (which is actually a disc configuration) and that is integral to the wheel hub. Does the speed sensor mount parallel to the axis of the wheel? If so then the tone ring is in the wheel hub.

I don't like any pad that is not aggressive on disc. The OEM metallic type pad is nice and aggressive and is constantly skimming the disc to keep it true. Cast iron always shifts around, the higher quality iron mix and treatments to a lesser extent. Put in a pad that takes nothing or minimal off the disc (like ceramic) and you end up with a pulsing pedal. I usually get two pads per disc and I don't bother skimming inbetween. In regards to the ABS sensors, don't be scared of the cheap chinese ABS sensors. I bought a complete set for $60 from Bapmic and they work perfect.

This was an informative video which will motivate people to work on their own vehicles but in the world of mechanics we use torque specs. If you do not properly torque a bolt you are liable for a person's life. CYA and at least put a disclaimer such as "Follow your manufacturer's torque specs".
