Just finished watching this video (19Oct2024). My 2015 Tundra did the dashboard light show last weekend with the result that I took it the trusted neighbourhood shop that's serviced it since its warranty expired. Young mechanic found the problem and detailed what he found. Dirty right rear sensor, probably contaminated due to axle seal or possibly bearing. BTW - my mechanic follows your channel, so that alone is 👍👍. I understood his description of what was wrong, but wanted to learn more. I found your video on this very topic. These new vehicles certainly aren't as simple as they were when I'd DIY them in the early 70's and into the 90's. AGAIN...thanks for posting these videos...they're a great learning site indeed.
Sir, your channel is absolute GOLD! True honest advice from a TOYOTA MASTER TECH cannot be beat. Please keep doing what you're doing for us. It does not go unappreciated.. I can promise you that. Love this channel!!!
Our family has 2 Honda Accords, Honda Ridgeline, Toyota RAV4, and a Lexus RX500h. You are the go to guy for any maintenance issues. Keep up the good work!
Great video as usual. Just wanted to mention what I have found to work to prevent rodent damage. I purchased concentrated Peppermint oil, mix 2 oz. per gallon of warm water. Use a small pump up sprayer and spray the vehicle engine compartment and underside every two weeks. That is the only thing I have found to keep the rodents at bay. Thank you for your continued great content!
My abs turns on every time I brake under 20mph. Replaced my rear sensors and cleaned the front sensors. Did the ohms test. Still goes off every time. It's a 2002 highlander in Wisconsin. Cleaned the rust also. Love your channel. Thanks
Thank you for the most informative video I could find on the subject. Well done and greatly appreciated. I also live in the rust belt of upstate NY and have been having issues with my 2007 Toyota Tundra for well over 6 months and still can't solve the problem. fist time around, the dash lights indicated a front wheel speed censor open circuit. I eliminated the cable and instead of spending the $200+ dollars on the OEM sensor, I installed one I found on Amazon for like 90 bucks. thru it in and it worked perfect.... for about 6 months. Then had the same dash lights come on indicating the same issue. I eliminated the cable harness as the problem so this time I forked out the cash and bought the correct sensor. When I went to change it, I broke the bolt off that secures it top the steering knuckle. So I drilled it and tried using an easy out to get it out, and that snapped off in the original bolt. So I ended up being able to drill and drill until I got a hole deep enough to work with. So my plan was to fill the hole with jb weld then redrill the jb welded hole, and try and tap it so that I could at lest get a couple threads of a bolt to hold this sensor in place. Well that didn't work so well I had some JB weld protruding on the outside and I had to sand it down to get the surface flat again. While I was sanding , I figured I might as well sand all the rust that was caked around there as well. So I was able to get the new OEM sensor installed and it's now being held in place by just a couple threads of a 1/4x20 bolt. I fired it up and the ABS light is on, and I drive it and as soon as I get up to about 15 or 20 miles an hour it throws my dash lights indicating the same original problem. Before, I never had the ABS light come on prior to all the other dash lights, it would come on the same time as all the others - always seems to be either when I drive like 100 yards or if I get up to a certain speed. So I still have the same issue with a $200+ new Wheel speed sensor installed. So I'm trying to figure out what the issue is now, are the tolerances so close the perhaps I sanded enough metal off to allow the speed sensor to sit too far into the hole and that is what's causeing this issue now? On the speed sensor itself - why is the mounting hole made of like a brass color metal? Does this metal have to have a good connection to the steering knuckle for grounding purposes or does that have nothing to do with it? the sensor is tight it's just not being held by much, does it need to be torqued to a certain ft/lbs? Just trying to see what I can do next , short of buying and replacing the steering knuckle so that I have a good mount for this sensor. Any ideas on what I could try? Thank you for the help, much appreciated
you are right up there with RAinman RAy and South main auto.....Oh, yes, I almost forgot, Scotty Kilmer. Love watching these auto vids. Very facinating! Folks just have no idea what goes into labor cost: good tools, elbow grease/skin, your time and know-how, endless list.
If your a DYI and own a Toyota or a Luxis this is a must view channel. A lot of what's covered in diagnosis and repair here also applies Honda's. Sure they have different engines and transmissions but the method of diagnosis is the same. Scotty Kilmer looks at all makes and models and says exactly who's making crappie cars and when they were made-and its dosen't include Toyota's and Honda's.
Can't believe it took me so long to find this channel. It already inspired me to tackle some overdue maintenance on my Camry hybrid. Keep those video's coming!
I love Toyotas, and Your vids are Community College quality auto tech instruction my friend. Your skills and your passion for what you do is inspiring.. I have the mechanical aptitude to work on cars, but I don't really like to if i can afford to pay someone else. Because of inflation and the craziness going on I find myself in the position that I don't have any other choice but to repair my own vehicles. In addition I've been burned so many times by incompetence and negligence and there is only a couple of shops I even allow to work on my cars and they are buried in work for 30days +. Again, no choice but to fix my own cars because rental cars run $1400 per month now for tiny sub-sub-sub compact. You have helped me and elevated my skill levels my friend thank you for what you do ! Your are helping those that are either poor or on the brink of it to survive and you will be blessed for this, mark my words !
I live about 15 minutes North of you in "The Rust Belt". I have a 2002 Sequoia with the same problem! Rust jacking is a common problem with evry car here. Thank you for the great video, and for making my life easier. I had Auto Zone scan my codes and their equipment can't read ABS codes obviously. I snapped off a front speed sensor bolt two years ago while replacing ball joints so when the weather clears I know what to do! Thank you again!
My son's 99 Seinna started making noise when applying the brakes. After a bit the noise stopped but the traction control light and absolutely light came on. After scanning no codes came up so I did a visual inspection and found the driver's side rear sensor was hanging by the wire. I placed the sensor back in its hole and secured with tape as I was at my son's house and he has very limited tools and supplies. The lights went out and he doesn't hear any noises when applying the brakes. I am waiting for him to bring the van to my house so I can get it up on jacks to get a better look at it and see what holds the sensor in place. Happy Motoring.
Another video that's helped me with diagnosis. Confirmed wire damage on the driver's rear speed sensor wire. Ordering part tomorrow. Thanks again for all the videos! All great stuff!
I like to put eyeballs on the sensor and reluctor wheel first, if possible. Visual inspection is always my first step. For electrical, my 2nd step is always to check every fuse. 😄
Hi Car Care Nut. My Lexus ISF has those lights come on the dashboard but I can not connect any diagnostics to the ECU. Checked all the fuses, got a new battery, checked all the relays, pulled the ABS module out to check the connectors, all good. Done the same to the ECU, all good. But still can’t connect to ECU. Had an auto electrician look at it and he said the ABS module is not getting signal/power. Do I replace the ABS module? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Love your channel and please don’t stop making them. You are doing a great service to us humans 🙏
Hello Car Nut!! Thank you for you willingness to share your very valuable experience with me and the whole world. I would like to draw on that experience, if I may I have a 1999 Toy 4runner with ABS system and the Actuator is leaking fluid and appears to be leaking from between the line block and the motor of the Actuator. Is there a fix such as a Gasket for it?? Or why dose it leak from there Again I thank you for your time Anthony
AMD, I would suspect you are familiar with Eric O's UA-cam channel? His shop is in New York State part of the rust belt. I get my Toyota/Lexus fix with your channel and overall car diagnosis/repair from his channel. A great combo one-two punch.
one other thing to check is the connector of the abs wire itself. few years back i had a scion xD with a rear abs code and it turned out the connector to the abs sensor was corroded from salt water intrusion
Nice work diagnosing the problem, but you missed one other issue that could arise, which has occurred to myself on a 2009 toyota camry on the same Front left side. As in the same scenario of where I live in Canada and experience lots of rust as a result of road salt in the winters. I had performed all of the same diagnosis and found nothing wrong with the sensors, or wire but after observing through the sensor hole with a flashlight, I observed the tone ring on the CV shaft had slide down and was not aligned with sensor, and after trying to re-aligned the ring, noticed it had cracked and was loose. Could not get the tone ring part sourced separately and had to replace the whole left cv shaft to fix issue.
As always, excellent video. Video was very crisp and clear this time, more than usual. New cam? Are the o rings buna n or nitrile, etc? In a rusty situation I like to put a very small coat of lubricant on the o ring to prevent it from damage as it goes back in and to help it seal a little better. A very very light amount. Some o rings can’t handle lubrication and will break down prematurely. One suggestion if I may. If you could use something like a small but long screwdriver or the like to point to something, it would be helpful. Thanks for your videos and instruction. I hope to see your videos for a long time to come!
I clean terminals like that with white vinegar. It will take the corrosion off completely. Then I rinse off with water , and spray with electrical contact cleaner.
If you live in the rust belt you may not be able to use the on car hub pullers to extract a bearing from a truck (Tacoma, 4Runner, tundra, etc..). They can get Extremely frozen in there…. Saw one that required a 40 ton press to get it out…. It deformed a 12 ton HF press trying to get it out. I told them to replace the whole knuckle because surely something is bent…
I am a retired elevator mechanic and I have had very good luck with DeoxIT D100L contact stablent. I was wondering if it might be a good idea to use it in a connector that has shown signs of corrosion. Also, what do you think about spraying the sensor with penetrating oil before removal? Then painting the sensor area to slow down future rust.
Great video , I'm a new subscriber to you channel, I got a Toyota 2003 pre runner with the same abs problem in the left wheel, co205 code , I'm going to do what you showed in the video, thank you very much. Cheers from Ontario ca
My 2008 toyota crewmax, I replaced front and back brakes and rotors, ow I have bliniking 4hi,abs,traction, vsw lights on,do you think it's the sensors it never came on before I did the brakes
So I've got an 04 gx470 we purchased for our family SUV. We got scammed with an odometer roll back when we got the car. It has 272k miles on it. We don't know when the major service was done so we did the timing belt water pump after we got the car and replaced the rotors and pads. About 2 weeks ago it started to make a screech noise after a cold start. I was able to see the noise was coming from the accumulator. I had the accumulator replaced none of the parts shops in my area had them in stock and I ended up getting a rebuilt from Amazon. The car no longer had the screech on cold starts but, 2 days ago as I was driving and about 1 mile after a cold start after sitting over night the ABS brake and two VSC lights came on followed by a buzzer. After about 1-3 minutes the lights went off and the buzzer stopped. When the lights came on I was not on the brakes I was just driving. I tapped the brakes and they felt normal. I'm at a loss about what it could be. Could the rebuilt accumulator be bad? I used my obd reader and there were no codes when I checked. Then it happened again today. Similar situation I started the car in the morning and within 4 miles it happened again. I came to a stop and held the brakes and it felt like it had normal pressure. After 2-3 min everything went back to normal. It has only happened within 10-15 min of a cold start. I can hear the accumulator on normal start ups and it sounds normal no screeching. I'm stumped I don't want to just randomly throw parts at it. Could it be the abs unit itself? Or the new accumulator is faulty? I've got my scanner hooked up to the car so if it happens again I can pull codes while the lights are on. I've let the car idle for 30+ min with random brake taps and can't get it to happen. It seems like it's only after sitting over night and in the first 10 or so min of driving.
Love your videos. Would you be willing to do a VSC Trac video? I have tried replacing the gas cap like some videos have said to do. but the second I go into reverse the light turns on after clearing the code.
Hello AMD, been trying to help my son fix his 09 ls460, bought it with brake and steering problems. I change abs actuator brake work well but abs light still on and change angle sensor fix the steering wheel problems (it was supper stiff ro turn). Do they need to be reset or update done after changing parts. I still have 2 code on for VGRS C1595 and C15A2, ABS code I have is C1203. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, my son is in the United States Marine try to get his car in shape to send to him when he get to duty station in few month. Take care, love all your videos. Keep up the great work ethic, may the lord always love and bless you and your family more each and everyday. 🙏🙏🙏 FYI I have a Topdon Phenix still learning how to use it, please give me pointers on how to address these issues, thank you so much in advance.
You are my Toyota Maintenance God. That said, don’t we need to be careful when cleaning the surface to make sure no dust or debris enters the sensor hole? Anyone have any thoughts?
Hi I first want to thank you for all your knowledge and videos! I spend most of my free time watching then. I have a question regarding an ABs code that pops up on my code reader. There is no abs light on dash. It is c1340. “Open circuit in center diff lock when engaged”. It’s a 2004 Lexus gx470. Center diff engages fine, no blinking lights. My concern is that the “VSC off” light does not illuminate when diff is locked. Where should I begin to test? Would it be the actuator or the abs module?
Car Care Nut, please help! I have a 2007 Toyota Camry LE, 4 CYL. It does the weirdest thing. NO ABS LIGHT IS ON. When I hit the brakes, everything works fine until I get to about 5mph. The pedal pulsates as if the ABS is being actuated and then the car finally stops. It only happens once I cross the 5 mph mark on the speedometer down to a complete stop. Very strange as the check engine light is not on. PLEASE HELP.
Awesome video thanks again AMD! Hey I have a 2020 hybrid Camry I understand that it has a ECVT TRANNY, are they problematic? And on hybrids do they need warming engine up prior to driving?
Hi! The ecvt on hybrids is very reliable. A lot more reliable than your standard automatic transmission. And give it a few minutes to warm up in cold weather only
Can you explain how to fix Toyota FJ Cruiser . Only two codes were stored: C1241 and C1452. No ABS light stays on the dashboard when drive. Accumulator sensor voltage in normal range between 3.58 to 4.7 and change when pump operated. Any possibility this happen when I changed the battery.
Thanks for the video. Question beside the topic from this video. For the oil used in my 2012 highlander. It’s called for 0W-20 weigh. Is the quality of the oil from auto part differ from the dealer one or the same quality ? Thanks
WHat do you recommend to keep rodents from damaging the wiring under the hood? I currently have my 2019 Tacoma in the dealership because of rodent damage. Is this type of damage something you commonly see? If the rodent must die then I have no problem with that. Thank you for your time Sir.
backyard mechanic broke the left front sensor on my 2019 Prius... I replaced the sensor with after market part but it didn't fix it.. I visually seen the old one was broke... there's a code from Autozone that says it requires zeropoint calibration.... Not sure what to do now but it sucks not having cruise control...
Hi i really need your advice, help….i have a 2012 Prius and my brakes are locking up during driving, it happnes pretty much every 3 days it seem and do you think replacing the ABS module and brake booster will help the problem? its a pricey job, so i just want to make sure thats what it is…. thank you so much.
On my 2014 sienna I replace the clock spring and the steering wheel angle sensor and the airbag warning went away but now I have VSC and ABS with a U0073 code any ideas? Horn doesn’t work now and I put the old one on after clearing codes and same result
I have a 2016 Tundra 4x4 that the rear passenger wheel speed sensor is getting dirty inside the axle, I have removed it and cleaned it twice and it will go several hundred miles before acting up again. I just replaced it this time but judging by how dirty it was when I removed the old one I'm worried I may have a more serious issue internally. It was covered in black grease/oil that smelled burnt. What are your thoughts on this?
Need help. When I drove my Toyota Avalon to AutoZone they checked the charging system with their system tester it came back as a bad charging system I replaced the alternator and battery and checked all fuses and harnesses between the alternator, fuse box, and the battery cable + and negative no issue was found. The battery is 12.46-50 Volts engine is off and the engine running is 14.4-6 Volts. . I do not have any lights on the dashboard or problem driving.
Excellent Video ( as usual AMD ) ...My 2007 Camry V6 exhibits a strange ABS pulse just before it comes to a complete stop, but only does it once in a while.. Ant ideas..?
Hi! A few things to check. First that all tires are the same size and similar brand on each axle. And then make sure your tire pressure is now low on one tire. Last inspect the speed sensors for debris.
On my 2002 camry everytime i accelerate from standstill i get the sound like when skid control activates like abs activating. I have changed the abs computer module, changed the relays, changed the all speed sensors and still have the same issue with the same code speed sensors. I searched far and wide and found on a blog site someone mentioned that it could be the slotted wheel on the hub cracked around? Still can't figure it out and just keep driving like that.
I got an issue trying to get the new sensor on Lexus GX470 back in all the way. I already broke one trying to force it. Any tips on getting it in there?
I am so grateful for your videos. Because I am retired and unemployed I must do all the maintenance myself. Thank you. very much.
Except he did show how to unplug it from the hub assembly. 😂😂😂

With every new video our community is becoming stronger. I see 180k subscribers. Congratulations!!! Thank you AMD.
Thank you Marjan!

These are excellent training videos from an experienced mechanic that has SEEN these symptoms. Logically fault isolation and good hints. Great job!!!
Thank You! For this video, i just had this problem with our 2006 4R yesterday and need to repair it today. Again THANK YOU.
Hey man, just wanted to say thank you. Tried a bunch of solutions and your fix finally got my engine lights to turn off. Thank you!!!
I have two Toyotas. 1997 RAV 4 and a 2010 Corolla Saloon. This will help me a lot
Check for crossed wires! I didn't know that one. Thanks for the tip!

I have to take the time to watch all your older videos. Youre good.
Thank you. You have helped me with my 2016 Tacoma tremendously.
Outstandingly informative video. More helpful than even the ASE courses. Thank you so much.

This is the BEST video i seen on this
Thanks so much. You have the best videos out there. I always check and see if you have a video on my highlander before I start. Keep up the good work
If you need a wheel speed sensor is it worth it to spend the 3x on an OEM or is aftermarket OK in this scenario?
I bought an aftermarket sensor..and it's works the same
@@gregorywalsh7120 Thank you for the reply. How long have you been running with it?
Few months...I still need to check my abs module
I can safely say that the next video will be as good as this on .full of good information 👌
Great video! All the info without extra conversation.
Great automotive video... very helpful and informative.

excellent video - very thorough and complete - I am ready to tackle my 2001 Tacoma ABS light
Whoa! Thank you so much that was very helpful .
Nice work diagnosing the problem, but you missed one other issue that could arise, which has occurred to myself on a 2009 toyota camry on the same Front left side. As in the same scenario of where I live in Canada and experience lots of rust as a result of road salt in the winters.

Bonjour Daniel! Please use Krown rustrpoofing to protect your Camry. My Ontario car is 4 years older with no rust because it goes to Krown every year.

If you could use something like a small but long screwdriver or the like to point to something, it would be helpful. Thanks for your videos and instruction. I hope to see your videos for a long time to come!
Hi Bob! Likely nitrile
I clean terminals like that with white vinegar. It will take the corrosion off completely. Then I rinse off with water , and spray with electrical contact cleaner.
Add a tiny bit of Noalox Anti-Oxidant Compound into the connector. This will really protect the contacts.
9:42 I think you should get drill metallic brush to clean up the rust.
Wow very good job bro you are the best course 👍🏻
Nice video again!! This would make a good intro to R&R front wheel bearing job without the shop press😂❤️👍Have a Great Day.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to spray it down
Car care nut is a godsend
I have a 2003 4th gen Runner btw
Thankyou. Ive learned alot from you.
You need to do one on the ABS actuator on a Avalon
Great informative video.
I'm replacing my ABS module because the relay is bad. Is there a specific procedure for reprogramming once it's replaced and the brakes are bled?
May God richly bless you!!!

FYI I have a Topdon Phenix still learning how to use it, please give me pointers on how to address these issues, thank you so much in advance.
You are my Toyota Maintenance God. That said, don’t we need to be careful when cleaning the surface to make sure no dust or debris enters the sensor hole?
Anyone have any thoughts?
Great video! What's a good scanning tool for your average diyer?
Hi I first want to thank you for all your knowledge and videos! I spend most of my free time watching then. I have a question regarding an ABs code that pops up on my code reader. There is no abs light on dash. It is c1340. “Open circuit in center diff lock when engaged”. It’s a 2004 Lexus gx470. Center diff engages fine, no blinking lights. My concern is that the “VSC off” light does not illuminate when diff is locked. Where should I begin to test? Would it be the actuator or the abs module?
TY, sir.
Great ty. How when you've ABS fault code AND ECU?? Where do I go in this case.
Thank you
Car Care Nut, please help!
Hi sir greetings to you, do u have an informative videos on srs indicator light that is always on
Is there a low cost scan tool to make the computer recognize the aftermarket tire pressure sensors? for RAV 4 2020 & 2019 hybrid.
Hi! Check Carista scan tools website
Thank sir
Fantastic! Thanks! 🎸🎶
Hi great video. Do you have any ideas or clues on 2000 Toyota 4Runner v6. 2wd P0500 can you respond please . Thanks again 🙏
Hi! Will need some diagnosis on this one. They do have a speed sensor on the trans but it could also be an abs issue
Any help with 21 Tacoma pro, with locking differential! Rear abs harness broke, and can’t fire out how to completely replace the harness!?
I have the code C1246 on my Camry 2.4G 2011
What is it cause and how could i do? Thanks.
Hi Can you do some magic on the abs module failures am on the second one
Thanks for the video. Question beside the topic from this video. For the oil used in my 2012 highlander. It’s called for 0W-20 weigh. Is the quality of the oil from auto part differ from the dealer one or the same quality ? Thanks
Hi! For the same brand there’s no difference. Toyota branded oil is very good for Toyota models
@@TheCarCareNut thanks
What if it’s the brake indicator and the abs and the traction control all are on?
WHat do you recommend to keep rodents from damaging the wiring under the hood? I currently have my 2019 Tacoma in the dealership because of rodent damage. Is this type of damage something you commonly see? If the rodent must die then I have no problem with that. Thank you for your time Sir.
Hi! There are many products out there to repel them. Mint oil seems to work well
drj Westfield Wisconsin should you use dielectric grease on the connections?
backyard mechanic broke the left front sensor on my 2019 Prius... I replaced the sensor with after market part but it didn't fix it.. I visually seen the old one was broke... there's a code from Autozone that says it requires zeropoint calibration.... Not sure what to do now but it sucks not having cruise control...
Hi.
I’m having this trouble now.
Is there a sensor on each wheel or just the rear wheels?
Thank you!
T
fluid film spray. is the cheapest. and the most easiest way to fight that rust back ..
@@TheCarCareNut ...Thank you AMD...I will check the speed sensor for debris
On my 2002 camry everytime i accelerate from standstill i get the sound like when skid control activates like abs activating. I have changed the abs computer module, changed the relays, changed the all speed sensors and still have the same issue with the same code speed sensors. I searched far and wide and found on a blog site someone mentioned that it could be the slotted wheel on the hub cracked around? Still can't figure it out and just keep driving like that.
I got an issue trying to get the new sensor on Lexus GX470 back in all the way. I already broke one trying to force it. Any tips on getting it in there?
