I bought a couple of patterns through Ravelry for a similar-looking hat but neither one of them showed me how to join the two sides, how to add the label, how to cinch the top, how to sew on the button, or how to attach the pompom. This is the best, clearest, most accurate video I have seen on this, and after looking all over UA-cam for one that showed me the things that the purchased patterns I bought just told me to "join, cinch, and attch" without showing me how. THANK YOU for this very, very clear video. You are a terrific teacher.
Great work Teaching. I'm disabled and I Got it. I appreciate that you went step by step without being condisending like other channels sometimes are. I love that you prepared many varietys of the hat pattern with various yarn colors and size. Thanks also for having a url that's easily navigated without an overload of ads.... Well Done!
WOW!!! I've been crocheting WRONG for 5 years now!!! I learned by watching UA-cam videos and NONE OF THEM explained the stitches as well as YOU did!!! NOW I will be able to make STRAIGHT sides to my crochet stuff!!! Thanks.
Hello, I am in Md. I just finished closing up the top of the hat I made for my Granddaughter. i have to make her pom pom for the top. I want to say thank you for taking time to show us how to sew the hat where it doesn't show a seam. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Hi. Ideally, I would recommend matching the pattern gauge with whatever yarn you are using, and then follow the numbers of starting chains given in the written pattern for the size you are making. However, if you prefer to go by measurements instead, it would be better to crochet the first few rows and measure the width of the piece rather than measuring the starting chain. The starting chain doesn't always give a precise measurement of how wide the actual piece of crochet fabric will be. I hope this helps!
Awesome written instructions. I am very happy with the end results. Super easy. Thank you so much for taking the time in executing the video too. I made it with two pom poms and for a neighbor. Thanks.
Girl,, I cannot tell you how much this saved me. I'm making a costume construction for a theatre competition and my last piece was a crochet beanie and I have been working since AUGUST to get it down and find a tutorial that worked and I absolutely couldn't. I restarted and tried something new at LEAST 30 times. I'm new to crocheting and this was my first project. But I was able to watch this once and get it immediately!! You genuinely saved me and this is the BEST beginner tutorial I have watched!!
Hello Im new just found your channel i was looking for simple hat and I found it thank you for that hat . is very beautiful and God bless you and your family
Thanks so much for the tutorial and for sharing your skill. I just finished my beanie and it is the most beautiful thing I have ever worn. Lots of love!!
I love this hat! I've made 11 of them so far for Christmas gifts and I have 3 more to finish. I have the printed instructions, but I always come back to watch the way you seam the back- it's so good! Thank you for sharing this- I love it and it makes up beautifully with a bulky yarn. Most of the ones I've made are with the Bernat Softee Chunky, but I've also made two with Lion's Wool Ease Thick & Quick which I now think are my favorite- so soft and warm! Thank you, thank you!
Just found ur chanel and it's very detiald and very well explaind espeshy in the sowing bean doing this a long time but I hav lernd alot from this one project thank u very much h I defnalty will be makeing thi har
Thank you for your thorough tutorial! How do you attach a pom pom without the button? And do you have a tutorial on how to make a pom pom without the pom pom maker... by hand? Again, thank you so much for your excellent tutorial. 👍🏻♥️
Hi. To attach the pom pom without a button, you would just sew it on with a needle and thread, making sure to go through the inside of the pom pom and not just the fluff. I don't have a tutorial on making pom poms without a pom pom maker, but there are several tutorials out there. I hope this helps!

My hat turned out great. It's beautiful. It's perfect in every way. Except that it's big enough for a giant. Seriously. Gauge alone isn't enough to account for the size discrepancy. I followed the pattern for a medium/adult to a T. I used the right sized hook and yarn. I'm sure that I did something wrong, but I don't have a clue what. This thing would comfortably fit over a motorcycle helmet. I am trying to look at this with a sense of humor, but it's hard.
I'm so sorry to hear that this happened! If you checked your gauge, and used whatever hook size gave you the correct gauge measurement for the pattern, the only other thing I can think of that could cause that is the yarn. (Assuming here that you are familiar with measuring gauge and adjusting hook size to match gauge when needed rather than just using whatever hook size the pattern recommends.) If your yarn is too slippery, and doesn't have any structure to it, a very floppy / pliable / slippery yarn can stretch way out of shape and not have the elasticity to come back to the original size. If you don't think that is the problem, feel free to send me a photo at blogger[at]yayforyarn.com so I can take a closer look. I hope this helps!
Thank you so much for your reply and thoughts. I'm sure that I must have done something wrong since I don't think it was the yarn and gauge wouldn't account for that much of a disparity in size. Seriously...this thing is big enough for a giant to wear over a motorcycle helmet! :D I still love your videos and your teaching style. I'm going to go back to the pattern and try to figure out what I did wrong.
If you are making a hat for a 2 year old, I would recommend the Child Small if you cannot measure the child's head circumference. These hats are kind of forgiving when it comes to sizing, because they are nice and stretchy, and the brim folding up makes the hat height adjustable. As long as your gauge matches the pattern gauge, you will likely be able to follow the instructions for the Child Small to fit a 2 year old. I hope this helps!
This is a GREAT tutorial. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but every time a finish a row, one stitch decreases. I re-started my project and counted stitches, but I keep losing a stitch.
Hi Sandy. If you're not accidentally skipping a stitch in the main part of your row, that could be caused by the placement of your first or last stitch. When working the first stitch of the row, make sure that you're inserting the hook into the same stitch that the chain 1 is coming from. As soon as you're finished working the first single crochet of the row, it can help to place a stitch marker in the top of that stitch (not the current loop on the hook) to mark the first stitch of the row. Then, when you reach the last stitch of the row, make sure there are no single crochet stitches left in the row below to work into. (We're not working into the top of the chain 1 from the row below.) You can also place a stitch marker in the last single crochet of the row to mark it, so that when you turn and work the next row, you know to insert the hook for the first single crochet into the marked stitch (and of course, put a marker in your first single crochet of the new row). When you reach the end of the row, you'll want to work your last single crochet of the row into the stitch from the row below with the stitch marker in it. You'll need to remove the stitch marker from the stitch so you can work into it, and of course, count your stitches to make sure you have the correct number of stitches in your row. I have a tutorial on counting stitches here: yayforyarn.com/count-crochet-stitches/ I hope this helps!
hi..i saw your beautiful video and wanted your guidance in telling me if i follow your video how many stitches do i make my foundation chain row of stitches to be pls .. i m asking you bcoz i am new to crochet and just learning at this stage but i m just learning the single crochet stitch right now and i like your design.. thank you
Hi. The number of foundation chains to make will depend on several factors. 1. the thickness of the yarn you are using and the hook size you are using (these things determine the size of your stitches) 2. the size hat you want to make (the written pattern comes in 10 sizes) The written instructions for this project are available here: yayforyarn.com/easiest-crochet-hat/ The blog post gives lots of extra info on how to get started with this project for beginners. Check your yarn label to see what weight category (thickness) it is, and then you can go by the written instructions for using yarn of that thickness. The blog post will walk you through all of the steps for determining which size to make, which hook size to use for the yarn you have, and once you know those things, it also tells how many stitches to start with for the size hat you want to make. I hope this helps!
if for the same yarn that you are using in this video to make a adult small hat.. how many foundation stitches would you do for an adult medium size hat.. i am not so good at understanding as i am learning new so pls just tell me the number pls thank you.. .btw i love this video
Hi. The Adult Medium hat in #5 Bulky Weight yarn calls for 34 chain stitches. However, for the hat to turn out the correct size, it is necessary to check your gauge and make sure your stitches are the size that the pattern calls for. I have a tutorial on gauge here: yayforyarn.com/knit-crochet-gauge/
Hi!! I had a question about gauge not sure if you could help or not. So for the light 3 weight I saw you recommended 4 mm gauge and the number of stitches I did and it was more than 4 in so I kept going down in hook size and even using a 3mm I still couldn’t get to 28 rows without being over 4 in. Is it normal to use a hook that is 1.5 mm smaller than the recommended? Because I feel like I need to go to a 2.5mm hook and wasn’t sure if that would make a big deal
Hi! Yes, it can be totally normal to go down more than one hook size to match the pattern gauge. As long as you match the pattern gauge and feel comfortable with the tension of your stitches, it's fine to go down that many sizes. I hope this helps!
Hej. Lovely video. I will use it to make adorable hats for kemoheads. That are free hats for people which are in chemo treatment. Thanks a lot, but i really would like the labels. Couldn't find the link to them. Sorry
Hi Sharon. I don't know if this would work with the thermal stitch. It would depend on how stretchy the fabric is. For the hat to fit comfortably, it needs to have a good amount of lengthwise stretch. I chose to use BLO single crochet because it has a lot of lengthwise elasticity. I would suggest trying a swatch in thermal stitch, and seeing if it has a good amount of stretch. Feel free to try it, and let me know how it works for you. I hope this helps!
I am a new crocheter just started in July..made two of the hats between yesterday and today..can you tell me where you ordered your labels ...Thanks so much!!!!
Hi Loretta. If you don't have chunky yarn, you could use multiple strands held together, or you can follow one of the other sets of instructions in this pattern. The written pattern includes separate instructions for working with different thicknesses of yarn. You can find the free version of the written pattern by visiting the first link in the video description. I hope this helps!
If I’m making an adult medium in the #6 bulky, how do I know how many stitches to do? I looked at the patterns but am confused as to how the numbers correlate with the sizes.
Hi Jacqueline. If you're making a #6 Super Bulky hat in the Adult Medium size, here's how to know which number to follow. The Adult Medium is the 9th size in the pattern, so when you see a list of numbers, the correct number for the Adult Medium will be the 9th number in the list. The instructions for using #6 yarn says to loosely ch 15 (16, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25, 27, 27, 28) sts. The 9th number in that list is 27, so you'll start by chaining 27 stitches for the Adult Medium. I hope this helps!
I would recommend using the BLO single crochet, as it creates a much stretchier fabric. BLO single crochet creates a nice pliable, stretchy ribbing, which will make a much more comfortable and better fitting hat. You can try using regular single crochet if you like, but the resulting fabric will be stiffer and not as stretchy, so the hat will not be as comfortable and will be more difficult to cinch closed at the top. If you're not familiar with BLO single crochet, I have a video on that on my channel. (There's a link to that in the video description.) I hope this helps!
I frogged the work 2 times already. The edges are very uneaven and I seem to decrease rows. Don't know how- I work all stiches and do a ch1 too. :-( Not so simple that whole crochet ;-(
Hi Emilia! If your piece is coming out uneven and you're decreasing stitches unintentionally, I have a tutorial that shows how to fix that here: yayforyarn.com/count-crochet-stitches/ I hope this helps!
I'm on the blocking step, and am using acrylic yarn. I dont have an iron available to me as of right now. Are there any alternatives to steam blocking with an iron?
Hi Grace. If your yarn label says it's okay, you could machine wash and dry the piece instead of blocking. (If it does not say you can machine dry it, you can just let it dry flat.) I hope this helps!
Hi Catherine. I used buttons that were about 5/8" in diameter. I think 1/2" to 3/4" would be a good size for attaching the pom poms. I hope this helps!
Hi Sylvia! The link to where I purchased my custom tags is in the supplies list of the free written pattern, which you can view by visiting the first link in the video description. I hope this helps!
Hi Arlene. I don't have a scarf pattern that matches this hat exactly, but you could use the same back-loop-only single crochet stitch to make a scarf of any size you like, and it would match perfectly. I hope this helps!
Hi. No, I didn't make these labels. I ordered them from a seller on Etsy. The link to the Etsy listing I ordered mine from is in the video description. I hope this helps!
Hi. If you have one stitch less after every row, it sounds like you may be unintentionally skipping stitches. I have a tutorial on that here: yayforyarn.com/count-crochet-stitches/ If it is consistently losing a stitch every single row, my guess would be that you are consistently skipping a stitch at the beginning or end of every row. This can happen if you miss working into the first or last stitch loop on every row, or if you are unsure whether to work into the top of the turning chain or not. In this pattern, the chain 1 at the beginning of the row is not counted as a stitch. So when you work the first single crochet of the row, it should be worked in the back loop of the same stitch the chain 1 is coming out of. When you get to the end of the row, the last stitch of the row should always be worked into the back loop of the last single crochet of the row below, and not worked into the top of the chain 1 from the row below. Does that help?
Hi! The link to view the free version of the pattern is the first link in the video description. Right below the video title, there should be a few lines of the description visible, and if you click "see more", it should open up the whole description. I hope this helps!

Hi. Ideally, I would recommend matching the pattern gauge with whatever yarn you are using, and then follow the numbers of starting chains given in the written pattern for the size you are making. Great video..❤️❤️❤️

Seriously...this thing is big enough for a giant to wear over a motorcycle helmet! :D I still love your videos and your teaching style. Браво. Благодарим.
Making one now for a 2 year old. Don't know how to measure I am trying with a 25 chain. Do you have a chart? Ty. Xx Grandma Rosie. ♥️😷
1. the thickness of the yarn you are using and the hook size you are using (these things determine the size of your stitches)
2. the size hat you want to make (the written pattern comes in 10 sizes)
The written instructions for this project are available here: yayforyarn.com/easiest-crochet-hat/
The blog post gives lots of extra info on how to get started with this project for beginners.
Love it !!! Mine didn’t come out perfect at all but it was a nice attempt !
if for the same yarn that you are using in this video to make a adult small hat.. how many foundation stitches would you do for an adult medium size hat.. i am not so good at understanding as i am learning new so pls just tell me the number pls thank you.. .btw i love this video
I LOVE your hook, where did you get it from?????

@@YayForYarn oh IReally Don't Know Where to find the video description I'm sorry I'm not very familiar with that.
I’ve searched on your site and UA-cam and nowhere can I find a video on blocking.
You can find my video on blocking here: ua-cam.com/video/imZ6xIQs79k/v-deo.html
I didnt do the BLO stitch, but i just normally single crocheted it. is that okay?
I would recommend using the BLO single crochet, as it creates a much stretchier fabric. BLO single crochet creates a nice pliable, stretchy ribbing, which will make a much more comfortable and better fitting hat. You can try using regular single crochet if you like, but the resulting fabric will be stiffer and not as stretchy, so the hat will not be as comfortable and will be more difficult to cinch closed at the top. If you're not familiar with BLO single crochet, I have a video on that on my channel. (There's a link to that in the video description.) I hope this helps!
Yes I did the blo stitch I thought I was doing the regular
What size buttons do you use? Any recommendations?
Hi Catherine. I used buttons that were about 5/8" in diameter. I think 1/2" to 3/4" would be a good size for attaching the pom poms. I hope this helps!
Thank you for the tutorial. Where do you get the tags?
Hi Sylvia! The link to where I purchased my custom tags is in the supplies list of the free written pattern, which you can view by visiting the first link in the video description. I hope this helps!
is there a scarf pattern matches this? Thanks
Hi Arlene. I don't have a scarf pattern that matches this hat exactly, but you could use the same back-loop-only single crochet stitch to make a scarf of any size you like, and it would match perfectly. I hope this helps!
Do you make your own labels for your hats?
Hi. No, I didn't make these labels. I ordered them from a seller on Etsy. The link to the Etsy listing I ordered mine from is in the video description. I hope this helps!
I'm having a lot of trouble with the stich, everytime I finish a row , one stich just decreases,
Thank you,
I am new to this and not the most tech savvy. Where is the pattern?
Hi! The link to view the free version of the pattern is the first link in the video description. Right below the video title, there should be a few lines of the description visible, and if you click "see more", it should open up the whole description. I hope this helps!
