The Lange 1815 Chronograph IS the best Chrono in the world. There is really no question about it. Everything about the 1815 is perfect in terms of size, thickness, dial layout and materials and finishing. I cannot name another one better. Patek and VC, no no no.

Maybe not better/best but the VC Harmony Split-Seconds Chrono Ultra Thin is pretty freaking AMAZING. That said I would take the Lange all day every day.

Beautiful pieces. For me the perfect watch is a chronograph with a date function which can be worn dressed up or with jeans and a tee shirt. Something like the Zenith Chronomaster Revival A386 Manufacture Edition. Really cool watch!!

One day...One day I hope to have something in my collection as nice as this… Today I have only owned a handful of chronograph watches. All would be considered on the lower end, and there is no denying They have been both low cost and therefore quality. What I’ve really been doing is trying to narrow down what I like to ensure that I don’t make a mistake when I decide to spend ‘real’ money on a chronograph. I’ve done the same thing when it comes to divers, dress watches, Field watches, I’ve been lucky enough to make inform purchases by the time I decided to spend ‘real’ money on Those styles/categories. As of right now I would consider the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster My grail In this category… Not because I believe it it the best watch, But for me I think it would be perfect. Thanks for the fun contemplation!

Unless you win the lottery you will never be able to justify owning these watches. The only way to do it is to enjoy owning it until the desire to own it wears off and sell it on hopefully without losing a lot of money.

I use the chronograph function almost daily in a way that needs an hour totalizer. To me the Lange white dialed chronograph would be as close to perfection as possible if it had this complication. There is an additional reason for this, no pulsometer or tachymeter - i would never use these functions, so to me they add busyness to the dial. I am very happy with my IWC Pilot's chronograph but would be all over a Lange with the totalizer

ALS 1815 RATTRAPANTE PERPETUAL CALENDAR in platinum is the perfect watch for me. Until I can afford it, I have my Planet Ocean Chronograph in blue.

The perfect chronograph would be Zenith A384 Revival IMO. Its thin, pretty good finishing, tried & tested movement over 55 years and beautiful for an automatic. The style is up to my taste with great proportion and size.

My perfect watch would be a Casio Oceanus T200. It’s accurate, durable, has great design and finishing, it isn’t too far outside my budget, and the size is just right for my wrist. I wish it was made out of titanium though.

I am curious how much value a Lange will hold, since you can't ignore if one is dropping 50K or more on a watch.. Many considers Rolex to be a safe bet. I agree that if money is not an issue, that 1815 looks pretty nice.

If this had a 60 minute register, or 12 hours, Then maybe it would be a perfect watch

Great take, AB! I’ve always loved and considered the 1815 as one of my grails. My main gripe with Lange is they need to vary their case design across their lineup more. Yes, it is a great design but I feel they devote most effort to the movement finishing rather than taking risks in other directions.

While the 1815 is a beautiful watch and one I would certainly get if I could afford it, is not perfect. When they designed the architecture of the movement for the registers to be below the cam and pinion, to me, that ruined the top/bottom balance; the bottom looks too busy, and "heavy", compared to the top portion. On the Datograph is more cloaked because the oversized date covers the top, and creates a balance forming a triangle with the registers. On the 1815, just the brand font is not enough to create a balance, and it looks disproportionate. The Daytona also has some of that but because of the heavy printing and Rolex branding and coronet on the top (and because on the Daytona the registers sit above the center and only very slightly not as dramatic as the 1815) it is a lot less noticeable. For me a perfect dial would be on chronographs from the 1930s and 40s from Omega, Patek, Longines and a few others just to name a few. The size is great, the finishing is top notch, way above AP (which although is considered one of the top 3, their movement finishing is not on par with PP and VC), and like I said, if I could I totally would.
