The main issue with A. Lange watches lies in their servicing. I purchased a Saxonia (105.025) in the late 90s and had it serviced twice by a professional who wasn't authorized, as there were few authorized dealers in my area at that time, 20 years ago. When the Lange boutique opened near my town a few years ago, I decided to have the watch serviced there. After a 2-month wait, I received a quote for 4000 Euro because they stated that since the watch had been serviced by a third party, they needed to replace the parts, and the regular repair fee did not apply. I own watches from AP, Rolex, Patek, and Piaget, some of which have been in my family for over 50 years. When brought in for service, none of them have cost more than 2000 Euro to service or repair. While I'm willing to pay more for quality watches, charging 4000 Euro to repair a perfectly functional timepiece (which was purchased for 12,000 Euro) is unreasonable. It feels like an attempt to extract excessive money from customers through after-sales service. I've also heard similar horror stories from others who were charged 5000 Euro to service a Lange 1. Frankly, I hope A. Lange will reconsider their service policy. Meanwhile, I'll avoid their services and caution others against getting trapped in a similar situation to mine.

The A. Lange & Sohne is the choice for me, for the simple reasons you laid out midway through the video: It has a cleaner, neater look than the Patek (which is still a great watch in it's own right). The lower power reserve of the Datograph does not bother me too much since this is a manual wind watch anyway. Just all the more reason to connect to such a beautiful piece and admire that movement with all it's complexity!

I honestly didn't know who A. Lange & Söhne was before watching your channel, but this Datograph Perpetual is one of the most beautifully complicated watches I've ever seen. The Patek, outrageously out of my price range, is amazing but does not pull my attention like the ALS.
I agree these are two fascinating watches at to compare them is bold but I think he has done a great job. And if I’m being honest I have to go with the Patek Phillip just because of the history the style and the the holy grail position it takes for me. I love the way Patek has designed their watches in the past and drool over all of their vintage annual calendars.
The MVMT is vastly superior due to it'slim profile and cost. That way when the restaurant table wobbles due to a short leg or uneven floor, you can use 1 or more MVMT watches stacked to achieve a perfect height.
@@saucelove Still haven't answered my question. My uncle owns a watch store in Singapore and I handle these watches twice a year though his aquaintances. Quality wise, they seem the same. But movement decorations and design, is way superior in A lange and Sohne for me. So stop saying statements like PP is better without providing exact details.
The Lange blows away the Patek. Knockout in the 3rd round! The dial just looks cleaner and more coherent, and the stacking of those subdials is super impressive.
To me the A. Lange & Söhne nails the practicality and has flair with that mesmerizing case back. Outstandingly well articulated comparison of such complex watches
1mm thicker and 1.5x less power? A lange sure sacrified the wrong virtue here. Patek all the way.. And also, patel gets more expensive after you buy it
My next watch is the Lange for sure. I love the detail, finish and I have all Swiss watches in my collection, German manufacturing would be a great addition.
I am shocked by how personal these things are. Most of the comments are in favour of the Lange, but I cannot for the life of me understand why. This comment in particular really drives it home. The movement of the Lange actually makes me feel nauseous. It looks like something out of a Ridley Scott movie! On the Dial, I agree that the subdial at the 6 O'clock is a bit busy, but if I had to choose between that and the monstrous date window (one for each number?!?) I would always choose the former. I would like to qualify the above be stating I would not kick either of these watches out of bed for eating crackers!
ALS for me, I love the industrial look of the watch. The design prioritizes functionality. Oh and ALS never miss a chance of showing off their movement.
The CEO's of both brands watch such a video and have to let out a slight chuckle. Neither is worried about the other. Patek & Lange could not be more different as brands. Each executes their goals higher than perhaps any other watchmakers. Patek's history, level of precision and value retention needs no explanation. Lange's approach to crafting beautiful movements and engineering innovation really needs no introduction either. One has perfected swiss watchmaking tradition, the other has put german watchmaking in the coveted holy trinity discussion. Both brands will continue to refine and perfect their approach to making the finest timepieces the world has to offer, all while not sweating the other. If anything, the two brands probably serve as inspiration to one another in certain areas of their watchmaking, but I firmly believe that Patek Philippe will always remain the watchmaker that all others are chasing in terms of collectible value, resale value, prestige and watchmaking prowess.
Before watching this I'd have gone for the Patek Philippe. Ive seen some advertising for it in luxury magazines. But now I'd go for the German A. Lange & Sohne. I'd never even herd of A. Lange & Sohne until now. This was very cool and informative even though I can't afford either one. Thank you.
Exterior design wise, AL&S clearly put more detail to things that are quickly noticeable. The “Two floor” dial, date window frame, brand name on top of 12 position looks nice, it has lume which I believe this should be mandatory to every watch. On the other hand, to me the PP movement more beautiful. You can see more action going on which is part of the joy when you know you have a machine with lots of components working together to tell you the time. Every watch like this should also have mandatory glass case back.
i was thinking of such a comparison and this pops up great work watch finder and co........so surprised after a short while how A. Lange & Söhne has caught up on patek in a short span .....with great machinery and good complications on the German watch.....
Between these two I'd have to go Lange, the functionality of that pusher to change everything in synch is so much better than those little dimple ones you need a tool for, and the decoration on the movement is second to none. Now I just have to find a bank to rob to pay for one...
I go with A. Lange & Söhne the timepiece has highlighted simplicity, elegant, complex very well in a way that they have thought of the consumer & the attention to detail is off the charts
I own both these pieces, although in platinum and my Patek has the salmon (opaline) dial. I never wear it. My Dato is way older too, it's a 2008 and I still, to this day wear it whenever I can. The salmon dial looks more stunning with the brown crocodile strap in my opinion, but there is an elegance and charm to the Datograph with its Rhodium face I just can't explain. It's German, it's more complicated and the exhibition back shows it with 100 more parts to the little city. I find it weighs a bit more (at least to the feel, I have never weighed them). It's not even a close comparison and I love them both, but ALS knocked out the 5270 like Tyson did against some no name fighter. It's THAT one-sided.
What bothers me about the Patek (besides the mix of different fonts) is that the seconds hand only aligns with the dial at every full second (2:09). The seconds hand on the Lange perfectly hits the sub-second indices (2:32) due to its 18,000 vph = 5 vibrations per second.
@@canneddinners6059 I do have a deep respect with Swiss engineering, the passion and perfectionism spot on, but German Engineering is that of efficiency.
@MrLolmaster101 A third of Germany is Catholic (most German car brands are from Catholic part of Germany, ie. Stuttgart, Munich, Ingolstadt, etc.), while half of Switzerland is Protestant (Geneva is predominantly Protestant). Your argument is invalid.
@MrLolmaster101 Cafeteria Catholic, but that is not the point. Also in war, Protestants are without a doubt better commanders, but Catholics are effective cannon-fodder, boots on the ground. Just so you know that at least HALF of the Prussian troops in Königratz are Catholics, and they took the brunt of the fighting, while the Protestant troops were held in reserve, only being unleashed when the Austrians basically began their bayonet charge, (imagine a Banzai-charge). Same case with the British, Irish troops made up a huge percentage of the British Army, almost half matter of fact.
@@ThisIsTaco1 Oh right, now you want to tell me you posted this as a "joke"... Why do you have to come up with your knowledge acquired at school in the comment section of a watch video? And yes, I am German and I do fight against the lies that are drowning my people until today whenever I have to.

I really don't know why but the grey they use on the A. Lange is so appealing to me. Honestly the best looking watch I can think of....now to find a sub 3000 watch of similar looks with a grey dial.
These makers are the pinnacle of the art. I think only their aesthetic separates them. The Lange speaks to me in a way the Patek does not. It doesn’t diminish either one, it’s just how I respond to their individual aesthetic. Okay, so now I’m a Philosopher.
The rational efficiency in design of the A. Lange & Sohne definitely wins for me. I believe that they're the greatest luxury-grade watchmakers that the world has ever seen.
WoW, can I disturb you to get some information about the ETERNA brand? I purchased an ETERNA 1948 COSC chronograph complete calendar. However, I cannot find an online review to evaluate the quality.
Just getting into watches and watchmaking. Love the attention to detail in both, but I would probably pick the Patek if I somehow lived in a universe where $100,000+ would be able to be spent for a watch. Much easier, I think, to spot information at a quick glance despite the A. Lange having a big date. Love the gothic lettering on the AL&S, though, and both are incredible watches. Thanks for the well-made videos and all the close ups!
2nd time I've seen this amazing review, 1st time to comment. As I slowly began to discover and appreciate the beauty, quality and sheer work experience put into the watches I, at first, thought Omega and Rolex in a horological place all of their own. When I began to see and come to greatly admire the Glaushutte Original Senator Excellence PDM, I actually felt guilty for turning to a German made timepiece. It is not a crime to appreciate (long-for) a non-Swiss watch like this A, L&S over the PP, and I comfort myself with that. That, and also I owe less on my house than either masterpiece.
I prefer the Datograph Perpetual in this case. Its just cleaner and easier to read. The indices are sharp and crisp. The dial shows you the information in an organized manner, at the same time looking refined and engineered
I don’t believe you guys have ever touched on independents. Some thoughts on FP Journe maybe even a Philippe Dufour would be awesome. Head to Head at that level is dangerous, but damn I’d watch closeups of those movements all day.
Just paid my first visit to PP & Lange stores in Dubai. Lange: SA spent time sharing the brand history, the models. Enjoyed the tried on with coffee. PP: The whole store smells like a Chinese food, SA chit-chatting with each other loudly. Shown the 3 pieces available without telling any spec.
B deHaas Not actually great watches. The finishing on the movement is pretty bad for that price range. That being said they are a good investment though. People will pay stupid prices for them.
Both watches are fantastic! I think I lean towards liking the A. Lange & Söhne much more of the two. Even though the flared lugs on the Patek Philippe interest me slightly more than the lugs on the A. Lange & Söhne, and the Patek Philippe has a little more power reserve... that's about where it ends that I like over the A. Lange & Söhne. Again, both watches look spectacular but Germany won this one for me. They are both simple yet complicated at the same time because it's complicated to look simple with so many features on a watch. The A. Lange & Söhne just has a few extra tricks that stand out in a good way to me over the Patek Philippe. I enjoy your videos, cheers!~

@@saucelove what? ... you gotta back that up with the how mate
@@aravindvenkateswaran5294 ua-cam.com/video/hRf7a_wM5Dc/v-deo.html
according to this video. I luv own both.
Without a doubt....A. Lange..!!!
Looks like overwhelming support for the ALS! Both are truly fine masterpieces, and your narrative and videos are amazing as well!!
Give money to poor people
Patek is not liking the comments on this video, to be sure.
ALS for me as well.
The Lange blows away the Patek. Knockout in the 3rd round! The dial just looks cleaner and more coherent, and the stacking of those subdials is super impressive.
Lange is pretty good, but this is just ONE Watch...I think there is a reason, WHY Patek is at the top of watch brands
To me the A. Lange & Söhne nails the practicality and has flair with that mesmerizing case back. Outstandingly well articulated comparison of such complex watches
I love the A. Lange and Sohne movement, it’s beautiful. I’d definitely go for the A. Lange and Sohne. But I wouldn’t turn down either as a gift.
1mm thicker and 1.5x less power? A lange sure sacrified the wrong virtue here.
Patek all the way.. And also, patel gets more expensive after you buy it
Who the hell goes around gifting A Langes and PPs
My next watch is the Lange for sure. I love the detail, finish and I have all Swiss watches in my collection, German manufacturing would be a great addition.
Great video as always! Personally I would take the A Lange. Just the looks, colour scheme and that skeleton are amazing!
I was recently looking at images of Lange's movements. Some are just gorgeous. Incredible decorations on bridges, black polishing.
when you compare the movements aesthetically, the lange just has something about it thats just beautiful
Both watches are very comparable in every aspect except for one... Lange's display case back is on another level!
A. Lange & Söhne Fan...!!
here huge fan...
I went for the Datograph Perpetual Calendar after watching this video. Loving it !
ALS for me, I love the industrial look of the watch. The design prioritizes functionality. Oh and ALS never miss a chance of showing off their movement.
The Lange face has so much more depth. it's complex and clean, all at once. Exquisite.
I don't know what it is, but the lange&Söhne has something to it, which is simply magnificent.
Watched this so many times. Absolute dream watches
Your work absolutely deserves to be rendered in 4K.
HDR would be nice addition, if possible.
Lange all day long. My favourite though is the double split flyback 👌🏻
Thank you.
Absolutely stunning video! Cheers, I choose the A. Lange & Philippe!
Great video. I love the Lange‘s. I have several and prefer them to every other brand
Well done, informative video. Liked and Subscribed! Always wanted to see the two Titans together.
These videos make me fall even harder for A. Lange and Sohne
i was thinking of such a comparison and this pops up great work watch finder and co........so surprised after a short while how A. Lange & Söhne has caught up on patek in a short span .....with great machinery and good complications on the German watch.....
The best of the best in the watch world...... A.Lange & Sohne for me. What a great side by side comparison.
Dude, the writing in this is just amazing. So great.
Between these two I'd have to go Lange, the functionality of that pusher to change everything in synch is so much better than those little dimple ones you need a tool for, and the decoration on the movement is second to none. Now I just have to find a bank to rob to pay for one...
2 astonishing pieces. but love A.Lange more..
thank you great demo.
That A Lange & Söhne all day baby
I go with A. Lange & Söhne the timepiece has highlighted simplicity, elegant, complex very well in a way that they have thought of the consumer & the attention to detail is off the charts
A lange und Söhne 😍😍 thats what i called The Most coolest watch Brand in my opinion 😍😍
Thank you.
I prefer the A. Lange & Söhne's clean design TBH.
Also, I'm a sucker for German Engineering.
Selvariabell Swiss engineering is on the same level if not better
@@canneddinners6059 I do have a deep respect with Swiss engineering, the passion and perfectionism spot on, but German Engineering is that of efficiency.
Selvariabell so is Swiss engineering
Bankers vs engineers, cheese vs sausage... Let the stereotype war begin.
War neutrals vs war starters
@@ThisIsTaco1 If you're thinking in categories of war, I do think you're at war with intelligence and it doesn't look too good for you.
@@KaneChamp So snarky, seems you can't take a joke. Let me guess, German?
@@ThisIsTaco1 Oh right, now you want to tell me you posted this as a "joke"... Why do you have to come up with your knowledge acquired at school in the comment section of a watch video?
And yes, I am German and I do fight against the lies that are drowning my people until today whenever I have to.
@@KaneChamp Wow, so butthurt. you act like Germany never commited mistakes or started a war. And yeah, I learned at school, where did you learn? BTW, it is a joke, he was talking about Swiss and German stereotypes
I really don't know why but the grey they use on the A. Lange is so appealing to me. Honestly the best looking watch I can think of....now to find a sub 3000 watch of similar looks with a grey dial.
I'd take the A. Lange I think
What an amazing UA-cam channel! Thank you for the cool videos!
Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Pigeut look cheap in comparison with these beasts. I honestly like the A.Lange & Söhne a lot more.
Cant agree more
AP maybe, but not VC... VC has some watches that would blow you away but sadly they don't pop on video for some reason.
Love VC
Thats bullshit. An AP Royal Oak Tourbillon or a Vacheron Overseas PC are beatiful watches.
The date windows on A Langhe watches are so nice
It’s the ALS for me, it’s just stunning!
Beautifully shot video with great content. As for the win? A Lange & Sohne, by a hair’s breadth.
I can't afford either, so I'll just admire both.
Lange is the clear winner for me. The white gold with grey dial and large date is gorgeous. Another fantastic video!
I don’t believe you guys have ever touched on independents. Some thoughts on FP Journe maybe even a Philippe Dufour would be awesome. Head to Head at that level is dangerous, but damn I’d watch closeups of those movements all day.
Mina Lee bang!
i think the biggest problem would be to even get a philippe dufour to review. i mean hodinkee writes whole articles if one even comes up for sale haha
Mina lee what's your take on IWC watches?
There are a few reviews on fp journe by watchfinder
Both are incredibly sophisticated, well designed, elegant. But I don t know why A.Lange & Sohne is my preference.
The A Lange is a much better looking watch by far..
If you have this kind of budget for a watch you really can't go wrong. That said it comes down to looks wich for me is the A lange
"If you have this kind of budget for a watch you really can't go wrong" Richard Mille. There, I said it.
@@SwaggyMcSwagSwag1 lol 😂
@@SwaggyMcSwagSwag1 great watches I just don't like the look
B deHaas Not actually great watches. The finishing on the movement is pretty bad for that price range. That being said they are a good investment though. People will pay stupid prices for them.
@@mrjakobt its ridiculous what people pay for them
What a dream to have a Lange watch
this is how i want 2019 to start
that lange und söhne is my absolute favorite watch, even with that dial in the video its an absolute beauty
Even though my heart lies in Switzerland, I'm gonna go German this time. That right there, is pure class. Sorry Patek :/
Your videos are so amazing and they're also very beautifully filmed!I'd be interested in what camera and especially lenses you guys use!
