  • A Discussion around the Classic A. Lange & Söhne 1815. A genre that is the most classically inspired and manages to communicate an age-old design language that has been lost with many other brands. Restraint, Simplicity and Elegance, with the typical german approach of as little adornment and design as possible, results in a timeless series of pieces that continue to fascinate.

    A.Lange & Sohne watches are in a league of there own, having just spent 2 hours in their new boutique in Dubai I was just blown away by the quality and just the sheer workmanship that goes into these pieces by the artisans that produce them. Just incredible watches!

    I was lucky enough to collect the newest Submariner from the dealer last weekend. While I was there I tried on the ALS 1815 up/down, which has been on my wish list for a while. And I thought it was amazing, perfect size, good presence yet restrained. I was reaffirmed that I'll get it one day soon. Them I made a mistake...: when the sales girl asked me if I wanted to try on another one, I asked for the 1815 Chronograph... and I was blown away... the movement in reality looks simply breathtaking... pics or video condo it justice... so much detail so much depth... now the 1815 up/down is spoiled for me... is would only ever be a surrogate for the Chronograph...

    What a great video. I have the second generation 1815 Up/Down in rose gold, and the reason I got it over the 1815, is those subdials. It’s still obviously a dress watch, but the two sub dials just break it up enough to keep it interesting, so it goes great with more casual dress. It’s not a ‘tuxedo’ dress watch, which makes it more versatile

    IDGUY, while I enjoy the vast majority of your videos, it is this design oriented examination of a watch/brand where you go into design details that I learn the most from you. I love the fact that you took an email about a specific watch and the issue about the numerals and turned it into a 13 minute video. Great job.
    Thank you for showing the 1983 Waltham watch on the weekend. I was driving back from the mountains at 120 kms/hr in a bit of a snow squall so I could not engage as much as I wanted to. LOL

    Great video, which articulates exactly why I went for the 1815 Auf/Ab (in white gold). Also, the discrete splash of red on the power reserve indicator adds a bit of jazz to an otherwise extremely classic watch.

    The 1815 Rattrapante layout actually reminded me of an IWC Portugieser Chronograph at first.
    The 1815 Up/Down is my favorite in the whole line, especially since I've been fascinated by marine chronometer layouts.
    Finally, I also like the 1815 Thin because, though not as minimalist or as small as the Saxonia Thin, I prefer the presence of minute markers. Plus, honey gold is a perfect balance to the almost sterile feel of white gold, and the very soft feel of Lange's pink gold mixture.

    Omg. I loved this video. You gave me a far more eloquent articulation of my feelings about Lange in general and the 1815 range in particular. I was lucky enough to be able to buy my first Lange recently and I opted for the WG 1815 Up Down. I literally love it. I feel very fortunate to own one. And I’ve just ordered the 1815 Thin that you featured. A totally timeless classic in my eyes. It kinda made my bank account squeal for a simple Lange. But I can’t wait to have it in the collection next year. Thanks again for this thoughtful review.

      @ID-Guy  3 роки тому

      And it has a practicality to its complications which is also special. There's a lot to the watch that makes it very unique in this area (and they're priced pretty well on the grey market too for what you're getting) ;)

      Did you go for the rose or white gold?
      I'm looking at the 1815. I thinking the rose can dress down to smart casual but its always going to be louder.
      The white it more formal at the top end but with a dark brown strap it could dress down as well.
      I think white gold would be the up down as its a little sportier.

    Superb video. I've drifted towards the 1815 chronograph as my favourite in the Lange stable, and those new limited editions are on a whole other level. You could stare at either side of that Turbograph all day, every day...

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  3 роки тому +1

      And can you believe that a friend of this channel got hands-on time with all of them a few weeks back? He says the Turbograph is insane, but also very unwearable for his tastes (it's quite large and thick) - but they all are works or art in themselves. The 1815 Chrono will never lose its draw for me... Maybe we'll be lucky to snag one up one day? ;)

      @@ID-Guy For their quality, the 1815 chronos can be found at prices that are not as eye-watering as certain other brands' pieces. The Turbograph a little out of pretty much everyone's reach, even if they do have the wrists to carry it off! (Also hear some find the Datograph is a bit too weighty for their comfort.)

    You should cover the Saxonia thins. The very simple and pure models of ALS. There are still a lot of people who are purist and appreciates the minimalist designs. Look at the Copper blues/black. Going from Grand complications to the most simplistic design will give us the stark contrasts and the beauty of the brand.

    On a dress watch with a slow beat movement I prefer to not have a running seconds. A jerky seconds hand is not graceful and spoils the luxury a bit, at least to me. Also no small seconds register makes it the most balanced dial. While I get balancing the small seconds with a power reserve I think they could have done exactly the same thing with a small pointer date in the same place and fixed the balance of the dial with an added complication. For dress watches, I prefer Patek. They are generally (excluding 1815 thin) thinner and more elegant. Chronos, give me Lange every time. Great video again.

    • @johnanth
      @johnanth 3 роки тому +2

      Blue doesn't go with black, that's about it.
      In practice most people cannot see the dial of your watch at a distance (believe me, I have 20:20 vision). So choose a strap colour based on the rest of your outfit. I like brown suede for example so I choose a tan strap if I wear shoes like that. But don't feel too restricted as your watch is just an accessory to your outfit, it isn't the main event.

      Tim G, you do realise that watch making did not start with the Swiss, they were like China is now, making parts for the powerhouses of watch making which were the English and French before making their own watches and undercutting them and pricing them out of the market. Most of the Swiss history is branding hype.
