When craftsmen process wood, they must carefully check the grain of the wood. This is especially important when wearing geta as they require constant force. This is a good video that clearly shows the grain of the wood❤
When I was a teenager I had a pair of geta. I'm sure i still have them somewhere. I'd like another pair one day. I have an uncle who does business in Japan often. I will have to ask him to pick up a pair for me ❤. Thank you for sharing your beautiful craft with us. I can tell you take much pride in your work and you should 😊
Super unique machines - never seen anything like them, short of being used in a factory. This is more like a large shop. Very cool. ...and those shoes are expensive lol.
When I was a little girl my family moved to a larger house. Someone that lived there before us left behind a child size pair of Japanese wooden shoes. We had a wonderful time learning how to walk in them.
I feel like every tool in this show was designed to be as dangerous as possible. Also maybe I’m missing something but if the initial saw blades which did the first cuts were set properly the 3 different steps afterwards could’ve been eliminated. All they were doing was adjusting/further refining the initial cuts. If I’m wrong someone please let me know.
The first cut would be blanks, slightly larger than the largest size sold/made. All the trimming after would create different sizes as well as a better finish.

Didn’t see too many Harbor Freight tools did ya? Some of the tools did look a little scary, but these guys have probably been doing this since they were kids. Didn’t measure or use jigs to drill holes either, didn’t need to, they are true craftsman. Thank you for sharing your work!
Somewhat wasteful of wood, to make a non modern and not essential product. Lot of effort and time; just to keep / demonstrate an amazing process. Yet commendable workmanship and dedication to tradition..
Meanwhile just down the street Mazda is building cars almost entirely by robot- and those workers on the assembly line have eye and hearing protection.
Just a wd guess spent a lot on machines not on safety Japan's a very advanced nation no gloves no eye glasses no ear phones & no air filter mask to prevent micro particles inhalants want to see him ten years down the line health wise just curious hope he stays healthy
im curious if all those machines have ever, will ever or could ever pay themselves off. the cost of all those machines must equal thousands of wooden shoes.
Is he the only worker in this factory? It is unbelievable, that the user expectations have not been able to evolve for centuries: the only place the clog has not received a waterproof waxing/lacquering is where it should be the most important, on its sole.....

You can tell a true craftsman is at work when he makes a very difficult job appear easy to do. Excellent to see.
Very neat, I love seeing old machines still being used.

GOOD GOOD ❤❤❤❤❤
The old boys done good keeping all his fingers. Unlike the wood teachers I had back in the old 80’s! 😂 Along with his eyesight.
Amazing!😮❤❤
The factory was probably much busier and full of workers in its hey day. I wonder how old those machines are?

Haha! That is sweet. Did you learn to actually walk in them properly?

🤷♂️ weird flip flops
People have been working on these machines for decades, and as they see, all people’s fingers are intact. So, everything is not so scary.🖐️
The finish of a knife cut endgrain is different to a kerf
The machine appears to be chinese so safety was never in their mind

Very, very good ! ( Brazil )

It is a traditional craft that has been passed down for generations, and it takes a lot of time and effort to make each pair.
