I should add that, as many bookworms will know, Charles Dickens later based the character Mademoiselle Hortense from his novel "Bleak House" on Mrs. Manning.
At her execution Manning wore black satin which effectively caused a fashion decline in the material for 3 decades.

What's always blown my mind about this case is that instead of killing the worse and easier target (Fred) Marie decided to kill Patrick who going by what I know genuinely cared about her, was successful, could give her the life she wanted, and would be missed whereas Fred was a dead beat, alcoholic, lied to win her over, couldn't provide the life she wanted, didn't seem to care about her, and wouldn't be missed. Like i'm not saying anyone should've been killed because they shouldn't of been it's evil no matter what and so are Marie and Fred but logically it would've made MUCH more sense to kill the husband 🤷🏻‍♀️ He was an alcoholic, unhealthy, and had nothing going on at the time no one would miss him so it'd be easy to do without alerting anyone and even if you did you could suffocate him basically do something that doesn't leave marks and then play it off as it being due to his drinking and poor health whereas Patrick is the worst kind of target- I watch too many crime shows 💀

Read the book Invention of Murder, it’s about 600+ pages but this case is highlighted within it and is far more detailed than this video just because she references a ton of primary and contemporary sources and delves into how this case was covered in the media and how it influenced art and writing for decades afterwards. She also delves deeply into the trials. A short video, by virtue of only having a few pages worth of script, necessarily must cut SOME things out. This is a great introduction though

This was extremely well done and a compelling tale. As a teenager, I remember seeing a collage of old movie posters in the wallpaper in an old movie theatre that our theatre group used for plays. One of the lines was the lurid text "The Bermondsey Horror!" with blood dripping from the lettering. I thought that it was possibly some sort of a horror film and the phrase stuck with me. It's kind of a letdown to realize all these years later that instead of a monster movie, it was the historical tale of a fairly squalid domestic killing in the mid-19th century. The Mannings and their pedestrian, grasping motives disappoint me, not Paul's telling of their story.
What is kind of interesting is the "And Then What?" after the murder has been committed. It must have seemed like such a good idea to Marie at the time. She probably planned and dreamed for some time about what they could do with all that money and how much better their lives would be and how much the jerk had it coming to him. Then when she actually got up the nerve to do it, it went all wrong! O'Connor took much more killing than she realized he'd need. Instead of brining her and Fredrick together, this crime over their heads drove them apart. Then instead of a pile of cash to bring them a life of comfort, the securities had to be converted and that just made them even more conspicuous. When the cousin and the police started nosing around, she panicked and ran for it. Then both she and Fredrick were caught in no time at all, and so it was all for nothing. No wonder she was so incensed and indignant on the dock.

There's a reason some fantasies must remain fantasies, I suppose.

I just came across your channel, and I love your story telling (though I confess I wish there weren't so many of these stories to tell). I am writing a historical novel about the early 19th century England, and there is a murderous woman in it. Listening to your stories is a great resource into that time period. Thank you!

I just found this channel recently. So incredibly good. Reminds me of a program you'd see on the bbc back when it was still good
