in this video I go over the 3 California compliant AR 15 style rifles you can legally own in the State. Hopefully you find this informative and helpful.
I personally use comp-mags because it doesn't require replacing ANY parts on the rifle. Not even pins. The disadvantage of course is reloads; however, the benefit to me is that in SHTF/new laws/traveling scenarios I have a completely normal rifle in 2minutes after removing the magazine. For me, reloads are not as important as standard ergonomics. Of course, everyone has their own preferences.
I have two bullet button era rifles. That’s the route I went. I can’t do that freaking fin grip. Plus I had bought one and put tons of ‘scary’ stuff on it like a year before all this BS happened. I wasn’t taking it all off.
I’m leaning toward the comp-mags but are there issues clearing jams? I thought you wouldn’t be able to eject the mag to clear any issue? Or am I totally wrong?
@@rickperkins1555 you are correct. Removing the magazine is simply not an option unless you are uninstalling it. I have had people jam it up by loading it incorrectly so I had to field strip to clear it. And they are not very durable . I still prefer them, since as I said they require no change to the firearm and a normal rifle is only a field strip away in the event I travel or the law changes.
Fin grip to me is a better option. I had a fixed mag one but there’s way too many extra steps when you’re running drills with a shot timer so I turned it into a featureless rifle. It’s faster and more practical. Great video, man.
also you shouldnt comply with any of the "laws" and should do the one thing that will actually stop them which is fight back physically like the second amendment intends for us to be
I honestly like the thordsen stock, it handles like a traditional rifle stock. Another good option is the thumb rest fin grip. I like how the thordsen gen 3 looks but I really wanted an m16a2 clone and the fun grip helped me achieve that and in all honesty it’s not that bad. I tried mag lock and it was a pain but also didn’t seem to be reliable, my issue was sometimes the magazine wouldn’t seat all the way.
I just heard the term California compliant so I googled it and after watching this video all I can say is fkkkkkkkk that !!! I love my Montana . Thank you for info it was actually educating

I feel for yeah brother. I’m here on the east coast in NY. So I know what your going through. Yeah you can buy a “NYS” compliant rifle which is like you said featureless or you can build one to your liking like you can buy the parts to do it. But from what I heard at a gun show recently if you have one of those fixed mags in the rifle. What that is it’s the fixed 10 round mag and the mag release button is set with that non release screw and you can make your rifle one of those scary AR RIFLES. Like adjustable stock, forward grips, etc etc.
@norcalrifleman... have you used a dremel or any tool to shave down the "beak" on the ar maglock to make it thinner? Once you do it will fit in the small space of the upper and lower when the bolt is locked back
Good informative video. Do you prefer the mag lock rifle or the featureless rifle? Which do you find easier to use at the range? What brand are these 2 rifles?
Thank for this video. I found it very informational as I will be purchasing my first AR here in California and had no idea what featureless or fixed mag meant. 💯 much love from the 559!
Im thinking about getting JT10 from juggernaut Tactical that is california complaint but also planning on moving in the near future from California. What needs to be done to the rife to make it like the ones in freedom states?
I wouldn’t buy one of these Commiefornia models. I would just wait until you move. It will be way cheaper and you will have more selection from normal rifles that have none of this BS on them.
Our gun laws here are ridiculous. I have 2 fixed mag rifles with FNGR fixed mag kits installed on both and I use a bear flag defense loader. Maybe one day we’ll get to have nice things here lol
I feel your pain brother I live in another hell hole state with just as bad laws in new York stupid as hell you can have a bolt action with any feature and similar semi autos if look like a normal hunting rifle they are way more laxed when operationally it's the same
For home defense scenario, which of this configs do you prefer? I’m thinking fixed mag would be easier to control and shoot - you only really need one mag for home defense, not going into a prolonged fight - you agree?
For home defense, personally i run a pistol for maneuvering easier through the home. But if I had to use a rifle for home defense, I would run featureless to have a standard mag release. Plus you can run freedom week mags in featureless rifles not on fixed mag set ups. As far as only needing one mag for home defense it depends on the scenario. If it's multiple people I rather have the ability to reload. I rather have more to use than not enough to use.
Planing on getting one but fixed mag is the best option. But I agree with practice the steps and you will get better at using it. Featureless rifle are ridiculous and not practical in my opinion.
You forgot to mention that on fix mag, you can only do 10 round mags; if you put any larger, it’s against the law. Featureless, can do standard capacity (30 round mags), if you got them from “Freedom Week” or grandfathered in.
If 💩hits the fan, like really goes south... none on that complaint stuff is going to matter. I personally would just live free. It might sound like an oxymoron with that previous statement but typically if you don't break laws, none of this matters anyways. Keep extra parts on hand and change when needed. I'm not a California resident but I find it interesting the hoops you guys have to jump thru just to own those scary black firearms.

I was considering buying a rifle with the juggernaut take down kit as mentioned but the guy at the store said it was a bitch to clear jams, double feeds etc. He is all about the comp mags but I’m wondering if there are the same situations with clearing a jam. What’s your experience been like?
And your fixed mag rifle can't be closed and pinned together without a mag in it, because then it would act like a normal rifle, not trying to nit pick you but this video could get you in legal trouble if they could prove that you weren't in compliance with the law while in California
I just got a mini-14 to bypass this garbage. It's been modernized, strap, light, optic. It's a traditional rifle stock but you can replace the stock. Decent alternative for CA if you don't want to have a neutered weapon. I used that fin in training the day after using a standard AR15 and it's night a day difference with your grip and refuse to use it or have these extra steps just to reload. Reloading the mini with a 10rd mag kinda sucks as you don't have much to grab onto but I expect the mag restrictions to be removed soon and I can load up on 20/30rd mags which will remove that problem. I expect these featureless rules to also be removed in the coming few years in which case I will pickup a standard AR15 or similar.
How much did you get your mini14 for? I've been looking to get one for the same reasons as you mentioned. I got an smith and Wesson M&P 15 II, with the juggernaut tactical mag lock since it was cheaper than getting a mini 14 in the same caliber. However I still want a mini for the collection as I'm sure someday they may become rare collectors items or just become way more expensive.
@@technollusion I paid 1,200 for a used one recent series and in great condition. Fires great and came with 4x 10rd mags. I'm sure the person letting it go, didn't want to let it go. I actually ordered a new mini-14 and after a year of waiting I canceled the order. Shortly after I saw one in another store and grabbed it. I got the ultimak rail which gave me mounting options. Holosun reflect optic and I installed a smaller gas screw so the spent cartridges don't go flying across the state.
You can get factory 20 round mags that are blocked off to 10. Then when we finally win Duncan v. Bonta you can just scrape the epoxy off the floor plate and remove the block.
Mine switched to featureless and at point was maglock what a pain in the butt if you have any failures like riding the charging handle I one time had a double feed what a pain after that is when I changed cause at least it's functional
Our gun laws are trash. I run AR Maglock gen 2 w/ kingpins on both of my fixed mag ARs. For me it just runs way better than the others. I’m still able to use my bolt catch/release and clear malfunctions without breaking the whole rifle apart. Plus, it works with the bolt all the way locked back.
Do not like the featureless. That fin pistol grip is ridiculous. I use the CompMag. You don’t have to change your gun in any way. Yes loading it is ridiculous but not too bad if you’re at the range. Of course if you ever had to really use it the way it was intended if or when the SHTF you can easily take it out and put in a real mag.
