  • I realised a little too late that I should be using symbolism instead of metaphor so let's just pretend I said symbolism the entire time because I'm perfect and definitely don't make mistakes
Hey guys! Today we're talking about the INFAMOUS LOVE TRIANGLE.
Were you team Gale or team Peeta? (there is only one correct answer).

If I look exhausted in this video it’s because I am 😂

Couldn’t agree more! I never saw it as a love triangle especially the first read! It was her being traumatized and not being to handle a relationship but if there ever was the option, if they were free and safe it’s peeta!

Yes! Peeta is the only acceptable option...
And someone needed to give Katniss a break. The poor girl was seventeen, most seventeen year olds can barely do relationships without the weight of a rebellion on their hands

Not sure how much you know about the backstory of the books, but originally there was no triangle. Gale was supposed to be Katniss’s actual cousin, but the publisher thought a love triangle would sell better. The author didn’t want to follow that trope, but was basically strong armed into it. It’s why it’s so subtle and there is never a question of who Katniss is going to end up with. All roads led to Peeta. I did enjoy how Suzanne used Gale as an allegory. It’s not the case, but I like to imagine she did it in part to get back at the publishers. 😆

I have heard of the backstory but I didn't know where to look to see if it was real. But I love the idea Gale's allegory *might have* been to get back at those publishers - we all know from Suzanne Collins' writing she only writes with purpose

I'm onboard with the love triangle being a product of its time. I don't remember what kicked that off, but I know the Team Edward/Team Jacob from Twilight was a thing in 2008 at the same time this book was first published.
I was reflecting on these relationships when rewatching the series after seeing the new movie and... I don't think she would have gone with either of them if she didn't need them for her survival. I'm not accusing her of being transactional. Everyone in the districts is just trying to survive. But I think that her confusion within and in her relationships is true to the desperation of her circumstances.

I would argue at the beginning her relationship was transactional with Peeta because she feels a debt is owed for him saving her life with the loaves of bread.
But I do think that would have been portrayed less romantically at the start assuming the epilogue stayed the same.

@@CJs_Galaxy Hm... I didn't think that Katniss thought about Peeta romantically until during the games? (It's been 10+ years since I read the books though, so I may have just forgotten). After/during the games, they were trauma bonded. Even if she didn't have to put on a show of their relationship, they'd never be the same. And no one would ever be able to understand them like they understood each other.

In my opinion, all dystopian literature comes from “We” which relies heavily on the story of the garden of eden (utopia, so obviously dystopia comes from that.) The first love triangle can be boiled down to Adam, Eve, and Lilith. Any dystopia will unintentionally take things from their predecessor, as with any genre. When analyzing it as a dystopia, I believe Katniss is Adam, Peeta is Eve, Gale is Lilith. It’s very likely that this allegory was not intentional,,, but with the pair threatening to eat some berries that would set their whole world a flame,,, Fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil? I will never be against love triangles in dystopian literature because it reminds me of the father of dystopia

i will shamefully admit that as a kid I was slightly more team gale than team peeta until Mockingjay but it was purely because I was 13 and always rooted for the forlorn love interests no matter what, which is absolutely crazy looking back with critical thinking

Oh no... although I think we can make an exception though since thirteen is super young.
As long as you're team Peeta now we can forgive and forget
