    Your third theory is actually confirmed - when Katniss talks w Plutarch in 13 and Katniss (I think) asks him about him flashing the mockingjay on his clock, he confirms that it was supossed to be a hint that the arena would be like a clock, as well as show her subtly that he supports the rebellion. He then says “Of course, when I showed you this, I was merely tipping you off about the arena. As a mentor. I thought it might be a first step toward gaining your trust. I never dreamed you'd be a tribute again.”

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  8 місяців тому +15

      Yes! I completely forgot about that line in the book, thank you. So that would mean they likely designed the arena with District 4 in mind and possibly even to set the Career tributes back into the path of winning instead of outlier districts who could further inflame the rebellion

      Regarding your comments about Panem: parts of Canada, Mexico predominantly USA. She's from the US...write what you know and she knows it's geography. I am sure that there are other places in the "Panem world", but just as the districts know only as much as, the Capital allows them to know. In the books, which I have read and listened to the song the Hanging Tree, is vividly recalled by Katniss because it was one of the one times her mother got really angry! And yelled at her father. Because it was forbidden. Katniss ran away to her one hiding place. Where her father found her and said that they shouldn't sing the song anymore. So of course, she remembered every word.

    I agree with you that foxface didn't off her self, but for different reasons, like you said her main food source ended with Katniss blowing it up, she was able to steal food from the careers so most definitely able to steal food from peeta, now, nigthlock only grows in the outsides of 12 and 11, i'm pretty sure, so foxface didn't recognize it, she's smart and wouldn't eat an unidentified berry, but Katniss herself said it in the books, she ate it because peeta was planning on eating it, if it was a trap she would've noticed and wouldn't have eaten it, she thought she was safe by eating it

      With Foxface identifying the nightlock, it wouldn't matter how well versed she was in poisonous plants, even Katniss (in the books) did a double take and had to take a second, much closer look first. Foxface was clever but I think Suzanne Collins is trying to show us how your skills won't necessarily help you when you're desperate

    The idea that Panam is like the demon child and the rest of the world won't engage with it is funny. But then I imagine the consequences of no importing/exporting anything and suddenly the severe gap between wealth and poverty in Panam makes a loooooot more sense. The Capitol truly does just hoard all the resources

    as a European, I am also pretty sure civilisation outside Panem would also survive in a more or less organised way. personally I believe it's a similar situation to modern North Korea - we know it's terrible, we all would want this horrible country to change but we don't do anything about it except talking about it. while North Koreans are aware that the outside world exists because they have physical borders (so they can literally see it and sometimes people menage to flee), their information is very limited and they are fed propaganda about their country being the best. the only reason they know how different the wolrd could look outside is because of illegally smuggled video tapes with western movies, magazines and stuff like that - also while the general public doesn't have the access to the internet, some people do. rumours spread. I think that Collins was inspired by classic dystopian novels obviously and for example in "1984" the characters believe that they live in one of 3 existing countries that are constantly at war with each other and only the allegiance to one of them changes periodically but the main character questions whether the war is even true. my point being - it's not unlikely that the information in Panem is stricly controlled and the people are just being lied to about outside world not existing. especially since North America is huge and since people are kept in the districts, not many people will see the outside border if it even exists. plus Panem may very well be the only country in Americas and then you have a natural border of a whole ass ocean. i think the rest of the world is either aware of Panem and they severed dyplomatic relations with them or they are in contact but only top elites of Panem are included. either way, the rest of the world doesn't do anything 'cause they don't know how without harming the innocent/don't have enough resources/they don't really care. like we technically could do something about North Korea but it's tricky because their government has nukes. and also NK's existence is benefitient to some countries like China, who see them as an anti-western ally and also they exploit NK refugees and earn money on trading with NK in general. maybe the western governments would risk a war with NK but they sure as hell won't risk a war with China... international politics of our world are ruthless, cruel and absolutely disgusting. no reason to think it would be different in THG universe.
    anyway sorry for the long comment, like your videos!

      I like your points with the example of North Korea. I definitely see Panem being similar with other countries just watching on in horror but not really being able to do anything. I would assume since there have been natural disasters that created Panem, other countries are likely very weak and have their own problems to deal with anyway. Like in the real world, a lot of countries will see news from the U.S. but not do much about it because of their own problems such as the cost of living, exports and imports that aren't affected by the political climate.
      If Panem isn't offering the rest of the world something then other countries probably don't see a benefit in intervening

    Re the Accident that results in the deaths of the Katniss's and Gale"s fathers - Katniss's father was a hunter who regularly went off District to hunt. Those were crimes punishable by death. He could have been executed at any time. Why close down Coal production when you don't need to?

    i definitely think that the quarter quell would've been the same even if peeta and katniss hadn't won. I've always believed that the reapings for the 75th games were rigged, bc out of all the victors from district 1, somehow the brother and sister pair got reaped together? like thats so bizarre to me, what are the odds of those two both being chosen rather than just one or neither. plus i dont think they volunteered because they both are trying to stop the games during the interviews. its also hinted at that cashmere was being rebellious when haymitch says something about his familys deaths being a warning to the young cashmeres and johannas. thats also why i think the games were made to be in finnicks favour because out of all the victors, he is the easiest to control as they could simply threaten annie if he ever started acting up

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  8 місяців тому +8

      You have a lot of good points here. I like your idea about the Quarter Quell being the same but the reapings still being rigged. I think they had to have been rigged in some way because why else would Finnick and Annie both been reaped together? (Even though Mags volunteered) Almost like they're also star-crossed lovers and Snow knew that.

      What if the scenario you were proposing was all the same and it was all rigged and they were going to pull from the existing pool of male tributes only. Then after the victory tour snow was annoyed so they changed it to male and female tributes. Just a thought. After all 12 had 2 male victors.

    When I read the book about pultarch dancing with katniss. When he left, I understood as he was going to a secret rebel meeting. With his watch having a hologram mockingjay. Since he knew where the president was at. he didn't have eyes on him. Later we found out fully that he was working both sides as he sided with the rebels.

  • @ruthleigh
    @ruthleigh 8 місяців тому +3

    I believe all the games have already been preplanned (including the arena design and who to be reaped each quarter quell) years in advance when they were conceptualzing the hunger games to be "fair" to the tributes (to avoid the game makers or current president from using the games to retaliate on a specific district or person) . I forgot if I read this in TBOSAS during one of Snows class on how to improve the games so people will start watching it again or Plutarch or Haymich mentioned it in either Catching Fire or MockingJay books. The only thing they rigged in the 75th is who to be reapped, evidence of this is Plutarch mentioning "wrinkle" to Snow, and a cut scene where Plutarch went down to the vault where there are lots of safety deposit boxes and Plutarch burning the script Snow was supposed to read and replaced a new one (the one Snow actually read in the announcement of the 3rd Quarter Quell).

    It's fun to see such a debunking video. I'm a very new fan of the series and will soon start my second read trough and am currently looking for theories to follow in that read through.
    I definitly agree with the Foxface debunking. She was very desperate and fairly smart about stealing stuff. And putting myself in her shoes: If I were hungry and saw a fellow tribute collecting these berries, that (if I remember correctly) look somewhat similar to normal edible ones, I would probably try them out. Especially when I realise, that they never noticed me while running around. I would really love to know, how often she actually stole from them before that incident.
    I also agree about the father getting killed on purpose. Seems 100% something they would do while trying to be "sneaky". Might also be part of the reason the Mom lost any will to live. Maybe she suspected something and was too afraid what could happen to her and the rest of her loved ones. Add that to the obvious issue of losing the person she loved the most and a lot of people might break and be very careful about what your kids say.

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  8 місяців тому

      With the nightlock I'm pretty sure even Katniss had to do a double take when looking at the berries so of course Foxface wouldn't have immediately recognised them.
      The theory on Katniss's father definitely has evidence behind it since we know the victors have 'political consequences' if they rebel against that Capitol such as with Katniss and Peeta. So we know the Capitol isn't above killing off threats.

    At first, I couldn't believe that people didn't understand the change in Peeta. But then I remembered that most of those people are young and probably haven't had a lot of experience with change that comes with trauma. It's similar to the changes that come with age. At his core, he never lost who he was. Yes it was altered, but he still was The Boy with the Bread. And, as someone else pointed out, Foxface was starving. She saw that Peeta was gathering the berries to eat. So she thought that they were safe. There's no way, no matter how well she knew plants, that she could know every plant on the entire continent. The arena couldn't have been designed for Finnick. The arenas are built before the reaping, so the Game Makers wouldn't know who would be coming out of 4. But I like your idea of why they wanted a Career to win, but it didn't have to be 4. Careers are called that because they train for the games. They knew that swimming was how Annie Cresta won. So it's a sure thing that Districts 1 & 2 were teaching their possible tributes to swim. It's highly doubtful that Katniss' father was killed. His wife made him stop singing that song. There's nothing in the books to suggest that he has opinions about the government. The government also had other ways to punish people that didn't cause a shutdown of a product they needed. And they liked to make examples of people who challenged them. It's a simple fact, even today, whenever a miner enters a mine, they know it could be their last time above ground. And Prim didn't sing the song. She's made necklaces of rope. I can't argue with you about the last one. I'm here in the US and i can't argue that were obnoxious

  • @Rick_King
    @Rick_King 8 місяців тому +5

    Love your videos, C.J.
    I really don't think the arena for the Quarter Quell was designed with Finnick in mind. The arena had to be under construction for a year, possible several years, prior to the event. I've little doubt that the plan for the Quell was changed, as shown in the deleted footage from Catching Fire, so any plans to force the Victors back into the game had to come much later.
    Katniss was what, eleven years old when her father died, and Gale thirteen? I don't think their political views would have inspired the killing of their fathers, as they were both children, and didn't even know each other at that time.
    And lots of people traded at The Hob. I don't think Katniss' father was particularly outspoken about his views, and he even stopped singing The Hanging Tree when Katniss' mother asked him to.
    There may very well be human life in other continents, but I don't believe Panem is in contact with them.

      You have good insights on the theories. I’m very stubborn with these theories but you’ve provided me with some great evidence so I *might* reconsider 😅 but seriously I forgot about Katniss’s father immediately listening to her mother about political songs/opinions but I am inclined to believe that came about only because he had kids to protect but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t outspoken before Katniss and Prim

    I disagree with the theory that Katniss and Gale's fathers were deliberately killed for their political views, though it is an interesting theory. In the very first chapter of THG, Katniss mentions that her father sneaks outside of the border fence to hunt game and that he knows how to make his own bows and arrows. But she specifies that he never made and distributed bows to other people in the Seam or else he would have been accused of arming a rebellion. Therefore, his infractions were always at the individual level; this granted him relative safety from being snitched on by Peacekeepers because, like with Katniss after him, the Peacekeepers bought his game so it was in their own best interest to look the other way. While Katniss's father was a well-respected figure in the Hob, I suspect that he knew better than to be outspoken about his political views or do anything that would raise suspicions over himself. Furthermore, mining and other extractive industries really are that dangerous. Workers dying from explosions or occupational diseases like black lung are horrifyingly commonplace irl. Under super-exploitation conditions, workers really are regarded as that expendable. These deaths are senseless and indiscriminate, so I feel like it ties into the theme of how unfair the whole system is. You can do everything right and still end up dying; you can have your name entered into the Reaping only a single time and still end up being picked.

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  8 місяців тому

      You have a good point. The Capitol likely didn't secure the mines properly, making the place significantly more dangerous. It definitely adds to the unfair odds theme.
