    Only person I've seen speak out about this and I completely agree. It takes away one of the sad points about the games. TBOSAS seems to have brought an a new audience that is primarily in it for actors above anything else and while I think people should be able to enjoy and indulge in different medias for whatever reason they want, sometimes I think it's important to step back and think about the point said medias are trying to make.

    • @CJs_Galaxy

      Yeah we can enjoy media in whichever way but let's have more than one reason to cast someone when it comes to a story that is inherently political

    I've only realised recently that Katniss is indigenous-coded (and her father and the people of the Seam), and Suzanne Collins could have specified Katniss as such, but I think she chose to keep her appearance quite ambiguous for the purposes of Hollywood movie casting, as olive skin and dark hair could encompass a range of different ethnicities and potential actors. It's a shame that the casting directors/producers couldn't see Katniss as anything other than white, and I wish I'd picked up on the specifically Indigenous coding sooner

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  Місяць тому

      You're totally right there. I think Suzanne could have left it so a lot of people could relate to the character and not just white people. And honestly, when I hear 'olive skin' I don't think of someone white but unfortunately the movie is just a product of 2012 Hollywood prejudice

    THANK YOU for talking about this. Why do people want 30 year old dudes playing what is meant to be a 16 year old child 💀 (I'm 18 so actual teenager representation is important to me)

      Teenagers need to know what a teenager actually looks like!
      People like to cast 30 year olds so they can be weird and thirst after a minor 'appropriately'

  • @Stay_Zerose
    @Stay_Zerose Місяць тому +5

    My Personal take on the Hunger Games casting is that any capitol characters should be cast above their counter-parts to make them seem more menacing and less vulnerable, this is a reason I was completely fine with Tom Blyth playing Snow, he needs to have an assertive dominance over Lucy Gray because the power imbalance is a huge part of their relationship which is in many ways depicted and explored through inner monologue which obviously doesn't translate to screen. My point being I am willing to get beyond any physical casting traits like age if it will help visually communicate themes that would be otherwise difficult to convey on screen, therefore any fan casts should take this into consideration and hold numerous casts dependant on what the book brings us. For example if Haymitch is supposed to be a really scrappy underdog character then we should not cast a 6ft buff 30 year old buff guy to the role and should instead go scrawnier and potentially less conventionally attractive, but if Haymitch is an arrogant ass then he should be more in line with the conventionally attractive cool guy, especially if the story is not told from his perspective these casting decisions will impact a lot, it's not just a contest for who looks like a young woody because we probably won't find him. And with Hollywood being obsessed with remakes we may even get a whole new cast in the future, so in my perspective looking like Woody is near the bottom of my priorities.

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  Місяць тому

      You have a good point there. I think as well, a teenager and an adult hold themselves differently beyond appearance. A teenager, even if they're super confident, will not have the life experience to act as a dominant character whereas someone like Tom Blyth has that kind of life behind him to know how people like Snow will act - making the character more realistic as well.
      Haymitch specifically has that 'Seam' look and Katniss describes him as something of a looker when he was younger. Haymitch is this arrogant, stubborn, smart, good looking character and from my impression someone who aged badly because of his alcohol abuse. So, it's likely the younger Haymitch shouldn't actually look like Woody Harrelson anyway

    There is a economic divide between the Seam and Merchants (The Mellarks, Mrs Everdeen etc). Prim is definitely described as blonde, so at most they’d be mixed. Olive toned people however are NOT necessarily indigenous although they most certainly can be. You can be white with olive skin and grey eye too. I only say this because just because we ASSUME something is one way, doesn’t make it so. Suzanne Collins was involved with the film process and that counts for something. I agree that whoever is cast should be able to pass as 16 (and for the record I know how damaging white washing is, but I’m just looking at the book itself and there is not substantial enough evidence to get too caught up in the casting)

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks for sharing! :)
      I totally get that! Katniss and Prim were definitely mixed in some way (in my opinion) and I do think that they're race and ethnicity is still up for interpretation. The people of the Seam are headcanoned as Indigenous by a large part of the fandom and I think audiences just want to see less characters being assumed as white.
      I also wouldn't be surprised if Suzanne Collins was influenced by Hollywood and was complicit in casting a largely white cast in the beginning. Everyone's just kinda at fault for not realising the potential for natural diversity.
      But yes, maybe we should focus on the actor who embodies Haymitch's mega attitude and confidence first (then hopefully they'll not be too old of a cast member)

    It's an interesting possibility that Katniss's father might have been Native American. The bow and arrows certainly suggest that. Katniss often mentions that people in the Seem having darker skin and hair than, for example, Katniss's mother and sister (but I think she also mentions gray eyes rather than brown). On the other hand, her dad taught her Scots-Irish folk songs and his last name is English. Most of the Native Americans were forcibly removed from Appalachia and the south-east in the 1830s-- on the Trail of Tears. The Scotts and Germans who remained had to know nature to survive; the poorest people there are still struggling to survive with their knowledge of nature. It's possible she's part Native American; everyone I've ever met from that region claims native ancestry.

    Ive noticed you bring up a few times in ur vids on how the characters from the seam were white-washed and I would love to see what more you have to say about that in a full video. Tbh, its always what I’ve imagined and it never really made sense to me why they wouldn’t cast an indigenous actress ( i mean obviously Jenifer Lawerence did amazing and i know racism is a big thing in Hollywood but still) for Katniss and the others from the seam. Especially when there’s text contrasting her appearances to her sisters. I think I even remember reading something about Katniss wishing she looked like her sister, which really reminds me of the affects of a Eurocentric beauty standard. It would also line up with the geology of where district 12 is. It’s basically Appalachia and we that to compare and with the amount of similarities between the two, I think using info about Appalachia can be extended to district 12. Biggest example being mining and the mixture of Indigenous and white people. Anyways, it would be really cool to see you make a vid on that (the whitewashing and indigenous coding) because I think there’s a lot to be said and I haven’t seen a lot of discussion on the whitewashing of Katniss and Haymitch ( Ive seen some on Rue but thats it).Awesome video❤!

  • @sarahdoesrobloxandgacha7883

    I find it so wierd when Katniss is just seen as “black”, because people automatically assume every character that isn’t white to be black. Olive skin is just slightly darker than your average white person (ofc this doesn’t count for everyone, olive skin can be darker). Obviously I don’t mean this offensively, it’s just something I wanted to throw out here :). Thoughts?

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  Місяць тому

      I think that's also why people headcanon Katniss (and the Seam characters) as Indigenous American because they are not necessarily black, rather have that olive skin described by Suzanne Collins, or an array of different toned skin due to colonisation. I've seen 'biblically accurate' drawings where artists either choose between a lighter olive skin or a darker olive skin and shows someone more mixed for Katniss's character.
      I think it's also a part of Hollywood's struggle with diversity. Whilst, yes, black characters are a step in the right direction, when you assume non-white characters as black you don't get the true understanding of a character's background such as Katniss's. Katniss potentially being Indigenous adds a lot of depth to her character since it adds a cultural element that only acknowledging the colour of her skin would not add.
      It's also something I don't see often outside of Hollywood? Other Western media will cast diversity as per their own country's diversity (if they are diverse, which unfortunately isn't something everyone does).

    Everybody keeps saying that the people of The Seam were indigenous. Out of curiosity, which tribe has blue eyes? They are described in the books as having grey eyes. Grey eyes are pale blue. Not brown. Also, Prim took after her mom, who wasn't from The Seam

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  Місяць тому +2

      I'm not a totally sure about Indigenous American genetics but when it comes to eye colours I think it depends on both parents and less about an entire ethnicity. Katniss and Prim's mother was white so they're both (likely) mixed and there are definitely siblings who will inherent different genetics from their parents. I had a friend once who had the same two parents as her sister but she was super pale with blonde hair and her sister was had this tanned skin with medium brown hair. They had similar features of siblings it just didn't apply to the colour of their skin or hair.
      I'm also someone with Indigenous Australian ancestry myself (different from Indigenous American but as an example) my sisters and mother have grey eyes like characters from The Seam so it is definitely possible, I guess it's just more to do with being mixed race or ethnicity.

    • @Animei9
      @Animei9 Місяць тому +1

      @@CJs_Galaxy after I wrote that, I remembered that Gale also has grey eyes and people thought he and Katniss were related. That could imply that blue eyes aren't common there. I still think it's probable that the people of the Seam had mixed heritage, given their relatively small numbers and the fact that they were essentially cut off from the rest of the country. Has Ms. Collins ever clarified this? I'd love to hear from her on it. Although, regardless, it would be nice if the movie industry casted more people of color. They also still occasionally cast people way too old for parts, so don't be too surprised if they pick someone the wrong age. It's not as bad as it used to be, but it's still a little crazy sometimes. Many of the adult cast in Harry Potter were twice the ages they should have been. I can't remember, but was Haymitch from the Seam? Was he whitewashed too? I think I need to reread the books again.

    • @CJs_Galaxy
      @CJs_Galaxy  Місяць тому

      Honestly, the physical appearances of the characters are glanced over unless needed for the plot, we get more personality than anything. Catching Fire is where Haymitch's physical appearance as it will be in the new book is shown if you want to go looking for it. It should be when Katniss and Peeta watch the 50th Hunger Games. Haymitch was also from the Seam and (I'm pretty sure) had the Seam look.
      I don't think Suzanne Collins has clarified the whole 'Indigenous Katniss' idea but she also never confirmed Rue or Thresh as black and they were described as having midnight or dark skin (something along those lines) and another tribute for the 75th Hunger Games from district 11 (Seeder) had olive skin like Katniss so maybe that reveals a possibility for Katniss being African American?
      Thanks your the insights as well! :)
