- Should I buy a McLaren 720S? Well it may be a cliché title for a UA-cam video but actually it's quite significantly of interest to me. I do not intend to sell my McLaren 675LT Spider any time soon but I am rather interested in experiencing more with the latest car in the Super Series, the 720S. What do you think?
We know that the McLaren 720S is extraordinarily fast, faster even than the 675LT, but through all of the magnificent technology and remarkable new features, there's something that doesn't entirely grab the heart strings at this stage. During a visit to McLaren's Tour in Scotland, I jumped behind the wheel of a 720S to have a second drive and get some more thoughts together about it.

Heard the news of McLaren testing like the hardcore version of the HS, but wrapped in one of those camos where you can't see the true shape. But it has a crazy wing, almost looks like a 650 GT3.
Tim, from my perspective, if you like Drama, that's what your GT8 is for. The 720s is for the bloke working on Downing street who wants to peacock with his doors up. Great car, but too redundant in your garage.

Althought the 720s is a nice car
First of all "looks," is subjective, my friend. Not everyone will agree with you that the LT Spider looks better.
Secondly, why does "looks" have to matter so much? I, mean, this a SUPER CAR.....People buy it for its PERFORMANCE. Are you considering buying a super car just to admire its "looks," or to help you feel better about yourself? Just asking!

Well, that's you. And I respect your opinion and choice. But, for me, It is the performance of a car that really matters. And I don't judge according to "looks." Why? Because the looks of an object (and even that of another human-being) can't really do anything for me.

We all know the LT is coming later but how many cars do you want with big wings and loud exhast. The 720s is a stealthy weapon to have. Wish I could review one for a week for you

If you want a car that you can travel with and makes a lot of sound, I have a Camry with a busted exhaust that can set off car alarms wherever I drive. Or maybe just record some clips on a USB stick and play them back on the 1200W sound system. If you're not feelin' it Tim, maybe you shouldn't buy it. But I think you're missing the whole point about the car. I think the performance numbers were a bit, well, understated. I think Robert Melville is a design genius. And I think the 720S is so good, that we're just no able to comprehend today how good it actually is, but I feel there'll be a lot of auto makers borrowing from its design elements (if they haven't done so already...) and in the future we may say that this was the one that started the new phase of supercars...
For how long do you have to own the 720s in order to be able to get the LT-version in a few years?

But Tim the main point is that it's the replacement for the 650s. So comparing it to the LT is kinda not the intention. You should probably get one but only till the time they don't get the hardcore stripped out version. That will be really good fun.

A wise suggestion to say buy a depreciated one and has fixed the issues. And an exhaust is definitely the first mod and probably the only one you need.
From mp412c just a few years ago, to this. What a great company because they don't have cheap cars to make money like VW AG, nor rich history of road cars like Ferrari, but anyway they make as good cars or even better than Ferrari or Porsche. Mclaren has my big respect but I would never buy it 😁

Well, I absolutely detest noisy vehicles... loud noises, altogether, actually, so the fact that this car doesn't beat up the driver with noise and a rough ride, makes it very appealing to me. Not that I'll ever have the money for it, of course. One can dream, though, and that's free.
The simple answer is no. Although the 720S is incredible! Wait for the LT version of the 720S, im sure it will be mind-blowing!

What you and most people don't understand is that mclaren is only allocating the LT version to people who have bought a 720s. If that wasn't the case I'm sure he would just do as you said and wait till the LT version is released
Ben Farrow Not true, James(Mr JWW) got his LT without owning a 650s or any other McLaren. Maybe you are talking about the P1 GTR, that was only available to P1 owners
I say you should. For your driving style, the 720S is in every way a better car than the LT. The LT is still a better track car, but you rarely go to the track. As long as you don't hold on it it for to long I don't see why not. The price will likely take a drop after a couple years even without the miles, as McClarens, as awesome as they are, the prices drop for assorted reasons. But selling after a year or two your loss should be minimal. Noise is simple enough, add an exhaust. The difference between STG's 540S was night and day. I expect a 720S would be the same. A GT car you could drive, enjoy and sell when the new LT comes or whatever else comes along.

I have to say, the sound of a car does not really mean that much. Many car enthusiasts emphasize on the sound and "if it sounds like it is in second gear" I think some are "being too attached to things" (Iron Man 2). I support your point of view every step of the way, but sometimes you have to look beyond that emotion and drama that is not defined in one way. I mean look at the future of electric cars. You will miss the sound and rumble of a petrol car, but you can find emotion and drama in the way it pulls and how it handles. It is like looking at someone and defining emotion based on one factor or one group of factors, just look beyond it. Like you said things in the "futuristic way lack some of the excitement of previous generation[s]". They will take excitement in one way but will give another in another way. There is always a way.
Obviously don't buy it. That is one thing I like about you is you actually use your brain in buying things. These other UA-cam guys buy whatever they feel like and lose insane amounts of money on it. You at least actually think about it being a good or bad decision first.

Otherwise, pretty cool car! Just now that autumn is upon us, I'd be very worried about scooping out leafs and twigs from all those ducts and openings and such. Or maybe the idea is that you accelerate soooo fast that they won't stay there for long. xD

I don't know it this has been asked before, but have you ever considered buying a Caterham? A 620R, for example. Your Morgan was so unique, I think a new lightweight car would be a good choice.

I'm a Ferrari guy and the first time I saw the 720 I thought it wasn't so pretty. Ok, she has the "space ship performances" of an hypercar, but not the touch. I change my mind. The more videos I see the more this car appear me freaking cool... I need to see one in flash to fall definitely in love. Shmee, get one pliz. And also upgrade the FF with a Gtc. Or better get an 812 Stupidfast. 😁😁😁

Hi Tim! Saw this car in person at Mclaren Klassikstadt Frankfurt. It really looks awesome in that colour! But there's one thing I totally don't like: This cheap looking Speedometer! It ruins the cockpit look... They should re-design this! Besides that it's a beautiful car! I'm sure this engine is capable of 800+ hp with some tweaks... ;-)
Buy it then sell it when the LT comes out. That way you'll get an allocation too

I think you should buy one new and keep it long term, 10 years or more so you don't have to worry as much about the miles. It's such a great car that will be on the cutting edge for a long time and you would have it right at the beginning of that.

With the cars you have coming up I wouldn't. If you would only be able to have one super car the 720S would definitely be a good option since it can do everything very well. The noise can be fixed with an after market exhaust.

If, for example, the Mclaren designer (s) goal or intention was all about aerodynamics and fucntionality, and they are well pleased with what they've achieved with the design of the 720S, who are you to say it isn't good, simply because you do not find it attractive? I'd love to see where these alleged McLaren 720s owners are posting their cars for sale. I've only heard good things from 720s owners. Being a current owner of a 675 LT and 570s, I cannot see where the 720s could go wrong.

How do you mean it is not a pretty car? It may not be not to you! But your taste doesn't represent everyone else's. Personally, I think this is the best looking supercar McLaren has ever design and built since the F1.
I'd wait personally for an LT version unless you bought one as a keeper, TGE just lost money on his, which is fair enough for a new car sold quickly but still thats a very heavy ownership cost. You would need to keep it and be able to drive it regularly for 2-3 years to make it worthwhile in my mind. As a LHD and use as a ring tool... maybe... but there are better track focused cars certainlyfor the money. Beautiful peice of engineering though, but I love the drama of your LT more....

Shmee what you could do is in 2019 they are producing the 720 spyder so then you could buy that
just straight pipe it or put an other exhaust system and you'll get the only thing missing in this car which is the noise. But yes, great car, look at that visibility, and space, and at the same time you get a car that kills everybody on a daily, really good
It may lack some of the excitements of a naturally aspirated car, but still more exciting than anything with only electric motors. And you could always straight pipe it or something to make it more interesting lol

Some people have put the 720s on a dyno and found that the cars they have tested have more hp then advertised McLaren is giving you more thats one reason why its so fast
