- Hello friends, slightly out of the ordinary but we had some network / internet issues last night on our live VCQ episode.
To whit, we recorded this this morning to work through the remaining Super Chats - the Patreon podcast happened as normal if that's your usual tipple.
Thank you for your patience, and thanks for being here!
Dan & Mick
"With great Headroom comes great Responsibility". That would make an incredible t-shirt.
Agreed, awesome t-shirt idea!
😂😂😂😂😂…love it!
"WITH GREAT HEADROOM COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY"
Now that's something for a t-shirt!
I want one!
This might sound weird, but I only have an acoustic electric guitar, I don't have any pedals, and don't understand a lot of the stuff that the guys demonstrate and discuss, but I love this show. I watch all of the videos, and check for new videos pretty much daily. Many thanks guys!!!
Can I add my appreciation for the care taken in the packaging of TPS merch, it always arrives in perfect order and the hand written thank you note is a special touch. Typing this while wearing a TPS tee and drinking from a TPS mug which is sat on a TPS coaster!
Nice way to end a sad day here in Baltimore. Thanks guys ❤
Thanks for doing this, gents. You know how much we all love VCQ.
Good shout, Dan. Saw the Steve Morris Trio at the Lone Star Cafe Roadhouse and sat on top of the bar in front of the stage. Must have been mid 80s and he had a spaceship of a pedalboard. What an amazing night and incredible guitar sounds.
Thanks for doing this guys. It's appreciated. But man, gotta say, the community's live group chat is a really big part of the fun of the show. Props to the community. Love the show.
just wanna say your dean deleo video was awesome.
@@christopher-miles OH THANKS Christopher!
Thank you for crowbarring this into the production plan for the week, gents. A delight as always, to luxuriate in your encyclopaedic knowledge pouring forth.
Cha………po. 👏🏻
Thanks guys, a great way to solve a problem, I never get to watch live, so this felt quite normal.
I learn so much, live or not, I find vcq invaluable, thank you 👍
This is why we love you. Thanks for saving Tuesday!
Really glad you did this, always learn something from VCQ!
Thanks for this, guys. Better late than never. VCQesday.
More Oklahoma love here! Hanging out and learning from you guys is like taking a deluxe college course without any of the drawbacks. I can't express how much I enjoy learning from you both. Keep it up!
thanks for going the extra mile. thanks guys
Oh my goodness. There are specific circumstances where I'll interrupt my wife's work and show her a TPS vignette. There's anything involving Rosie, fascinating physics, such as Jocelyn Gould's guitar positioning, the Bros Landreth and Dan in fits of laughter. Rosie wagging and Dan doubling over top the list. It sure is wonderful to feel a part of a brilliant community and even better when one's better half is 100% in as well.
On the question of pre vs. post/DAW, my inexperience as a guitar player means I'm always adapting. A couple of pedals in the signal path means a whole different instrument, as far as my hands feel. And that's really cool and fun. My friend Larry favors going straight into the amp and letting the amp do its magic. That's very cool too. Just different. My learning process feels like one of adaptation more than anything else. Because I don't know better. But it's joyful. Thank you, TPS.
Brilliant !! Thanks for the redux.
I sure wish I could hang out with you guys. I love how you guys are just as you are in person and it’s obvious. It’s not a “show”. I love it. Thanks for the knowledge… and the laughs 😃
Thanks for doing this chaps…much appreciated 🤟🏻
So when do you need me?
Line arrays require a number of speakers vertically. Less frequency nulling than horizontal.
Tick sound: I had a pedal with a bad cap that would give me that sound. Took me forever as I didn't realize it wasn't full bypass.
Single EL34 tops out at 10W Single Ended.
RE-amping can be a total can of worms. ADC in, DAC out, ADC back in... that's a lot of information being lost. I work with a bunch of mastering engineers that really like to have as much of the signal done in the analog domain.
I can use my MXR Micro Flanger for some Chorus. Just turn up the rate and turn down the regen.
The SD Zephr Silver Wound were not potted at all. Problem is it's great but it will feedback like a banshee. Bees wax comes in low temp and high temp these sound totally different.
Thanks guys much fun, so when do you want me to drag my network analyzers over the pond to fix your network problems :)
That '61 Gibson Les Paul SG is fantastic! You guys rock! Much love from Ohio. 🤘😎
Your comment about "the ecosystem" of sound and reasonance reminds me of something I learned in college about "the poetics" of things. Its almost difficult to describe, but there's something that strikes a cord within each of us that makes us turn up the volume on one song, but not the next. It all seemed a bit over my head at the time but I'm beginning to understand it now.
Thanks for getting my question in. I was one of the folks with the lost SuperChat questions from a few weeks ago. When I SupeChatted this question and the show started buffering, I thought I was a total jinx! I promise not to disrupt the space/time/pedal continuum again!
I really wish you guys knew about the Blackstar Studio 10. The clean channel on that thing (mine’s the 6L6) is just fantastic. 10W, 12”, 6L6 - it’s killer.
Dan's explanation about the phaser/chorus/univibe thing is the main reason I watch you guys. Epic knowledge stored somewhere back in the head, ready to surface at any time brought by two great guys having fun with this amazing hobby. Love TPS!
Thanks for doing this! We really hope the internet goblins are squashed for next week. As many say we look forward to Monday night. Brightens up the start of the week nicely!
Thanks for answer to question, Guys. Blackstar Studio 10 is 10W with 1x12 speaker - let the hunt begin!!
Awesome surprise ! Love you guys !
Thanks for the thoughtful answer on the pedals based off studio gear. And you’re right- I do listen to Van Halen records all day long 😄
Really enjoyed this! What fun 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Good take 2 lol. Thanks for the knowledge 🎸
Maybe show someday with multi out tap tempo device controlling ..many many.. delays, tremolos and stuff simultaneously?
Hawkwind / spacerock!
The more I watch TPS, the more sane thoughts I have.
Thank you!❤
That would be really cool to see!
Great idea thanks guys
I don't know why I watch these🤣🤣. I understood about 6 words🙈. Might as well watch Hawking talk about the expanding universe🤷♂️
Yeah thanks guys for this- really appreciate the chat/ humour/tangents. Cheers
Thanks for the extra effort for tonight’s show!
Now, that’s true bypass there!! Way better than last night’s buffering-thingy, 😉...
🖖
Twiggy from Buck Rodger’s, Monty Python, the urge to visit an auction, any auction, a slice of Meat Loaf, impromptu bass just some of the reasons to rejoice in the return of VCQ ! Thanks leg-ends!
I enjoy perhaps the best of both, having a pair of (battery power-able) stereo amps stack on a stand at about 4" ad 5' above ground level. The top amp is a Roland A33 and the lower is a Yamaha Th10C. They're not loud enough except for solo gigs but in my room they are wonderful. I usually play my Ibanez AG75 (fingerstyle) and always through a Radial Big Shot ABY. The Roland is two channel with a mic port when I want to use it. The twin stereo speakers really fill a room well.
Yeh Leg Ends, I'm sorry for your interweb problems, but on the plus side we get to see you guys on a Tuesday as well. Which I think we'll all agree is epic. I was watching the Jonny Marr show again yesterday after listening to the Electronic hits, whilst doing my obligatory exercises " TO CHEAT DEATH FOR ANOTHER WEEK !!! " SIMPSON'S REF he is MEGA , I'm loving the " du jour " shorts. Great show as ever. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
Best live guitar sound, hands down, Jason Isbell at the Ryman. The solo on Flying Over Water was just transformative. His latest Rig Rundown says it all.
I wasn’t sure y’all could pull this off as a recording rather than live and maintain the vibe. I was scared y’all would be too focused and it would lose the charm.
I was wrong - it was as tangent riddled and distraction filled as I was hoping for. Bravo! Thanks y’all!
Hi all! Catch up next week. Have a super week.
It was disappointing about VCQ, but this was a pleasant surprise. Thanks for all that you do.
"Who's at the helm anyway?!" Brilliant - reminds me of "Who's on first base?"
Interestingly, having looked at Sam Brookes's latest set up, it appears he's touring a Princeton, which means there's another one in the Princeton camp!!! Although that one is one of the silver-panel reissues rather than black-panel, which is interesting. I think I'm to understand that the silver-panel reissues Fender take a bit more liberty with the circuits on? Not sure on that one though.
I have a 1983 MIJ Fender Strat (a ST-62-85). I consider it a vintage guitar. Sounds and feels ace too.
Outstanding Twiki impersonation Mick - produced a genuine lol! 🤖👋
I have toyed with the idea of dual 10" (or 12") speakers, each separately positioned and mounted inside an enclosure on a compound angle. They could be fed by the same or two different amplifiers. They could also be stacked or arrayed as desired.
The term "line array" come to mind. Do we need a line array speaker system with settings both PA and for guitar? Perhaps it could also allow for separate amp inputs for each set of speakers.
I had some lollar pickups in my tele that squiled like hell. I replaced the springs, with some stronger ones and the squil went away. I was adviced to use rubber tube instead og springs from Lollar, and im sure that would have worked too. Just an idea if you go with unpotted pickups.
1:02:22 BASS CONTENT! Ha! Thanks for the laughs gents, I actually thought Mick was going to put that bass right back down, but then quotes Jaco... Man, you guys made my day! Still hoping for more bass content in the future of course. Maybe you guys could have guests like you did with Dishan Abrahams way back when?
Some LPs used to recommend being played LOUD. As a relative term, anything above 80 dB begins to sound loud to me - and I try to keep even a live performance under 95 peak. In a small room 75 dB is great for practicing parts with a recorded video. At church "in ears" are required - otherwise I just adjust to the un-mic'd horns.
That made it to Australia on Wednesday
Love You Guys , keep going !!!!
I have to agree with he comment on excellent packaging. We received our shirts and other stuff a couple of weeks ago and it was so well packed.
I absolutely, 100% agree. The pedal tape on the boxes, the stickers, and even the tissue paper with the pedals on them (which I actually framed and put up in my man-cave) all scream coolness! And, it all looks so clean and professional!
There are old guitars and great guitars and some are great old guitars. Rareity means all old guitars will appreciate (moderated for condition) but great old guitars will appreciate more. Since all guitars age they'll all eventually reach vintage status and therefore appreciate in value more. I was lucky to purchase a '73 LP Custom in 1990 when they were considered neither old, vintage nor great but I have always loved it and eventually others who appreciate music that was played on them in the 70s and 80s also love them and will pay handsomely for one. Lesson being - if you find a great guitar that's not very old, hold onto it.
Pickups letting the sound of string on fret be heard sounds like the same thing as audible pick attack on strings coming through due to loud transients produce by a high headroom amp on ultra clean settings.
Just a heads up for the stereo delay into the ac15 guy, my Ac15 is from about 2016 and the two channels are definitely in phase rather than out of phase.
Isn't it so that when using different size speakers, a crossover circuit is require to balance the phase relationship.
I find myself needing to hold an acoustic or acoustic electric in such a way that we are braced against each other to support my physical approach to the instrument while maximizing the sonic projection produced (regardless of amplification devices employed).
Dan was Steve playing the VTM120 Silver Jubilee rig? I saw him several times in that time. Steve Morse Band and Dregs. So good!
Sending a stereo signal to one speaker seems counter productive. And summing a stereo signal does not return it to a proper mono one. So, when I use stereo output I go to two different amps. Even two mono signals to two amps is a "better" sound than one amp. The amps used, by the way are intentionally not identical - but, are similar in speaker size , power, and sound volume.
🥳 thanks gents!
Always fun!
LOVE THE SHIRT, " MICK'S A LUMBERJACK AND HE'S OK , HE WORKS ALL NIGHT & HE WORKS ALL DAY. etc
9:54 For a great exemple of awesome use of effects + a really cool double-tracked solo : (re)listen to one of their perfect songs, from Neon Ballroom (25 y.o. this month), "Do You Feel The Same" 🦁
And Daniel Johns' first solo album Talk, from 2015, is not rock/guitar at all, electro-pop oriented, but actually very impressive. Especially his singing 🤯
You really ought to show a little love for us bass players
After all , we provide the foundations that allow the show ponies to shine
Maybe the drummist too!
I think the use of a "passive" AB-Y should introduce fewer (and lesser) problems, if any at all. Those with filtering are still "passive" because all filtering is. I'm not a fan of active boost circuits being used to increase signal before amplification, as that allows for the introduction of unnecessary artifacts associated with circuitry. I like to "keep it simple, make it strong, and the filter for effect.
Going to the first question about stacks, does anyone know if a champ 57 would go well with a 68 vibrio champ? I know they are different, but cousins all the same….
Check that its not your phone or other electronic device radiating trash that the tele pickups are receiving. It happened to me.
Impedances tend to compete with each other. If you are fond of trying to control the contest be prepared to "referee".
When are we all getting our “Because Tone” tattoos?
Nice work fellas.. redemption !!
The Donner LAX COMP is a great pedal based on the Universal Audio 1176 leveling compressor. Don't let it's 35 bucks fool you. It's built around an LM3080 OTA ( Operational Transconductance Amplifier , see an excellent article on the CA3080 OTA in Internet Archives- Radio Electronics magazine May 1988 pages 63-68. The LAX COMP is useful at the beginning of the chain. The pedal is nice looking. There is even an "1176" in the logo.
Easter Monday is just an excuse for another bank holiday.
Polaroids of Tracy!!! 😂😂😂😂
You know you’re in for a good show when TWIGGY is referenced! Haha
?? Follow up. The tic sound is when plugged in and will tic, tic, tic as I slide up or down the fretboard. This is a Tele factory wired out of phase in the middle position. Doesn't happen with any of my others. So wierd.
Is it static possibly? I have an R8 Les Paul that made a ticking noise at every fret when I slid my finger on a string
. Rubbed a dryer sheet up and down the neck and the body and it went away.
@@bartrobinson6977 that's interesting. I sent it in for some fretwork, had some fret sprout when it arrived, but we let you know how it turns out. Thanks.
Look up how the pro auctioneers do that fast talk and notice that your version is surprisingly close. A lot of what comes out of their mouths is not words.
While I love the lives, this was actually pretty great! What if you did an ep of just questions folks sent in via Patreon?
That would be doable!
Regarding Dan's comment that you'd need two reverb pedals to run a true stereo "dual mono" setup, there are some reverb pedals that don't sum to mono. Source Audio Ventris being one example.
I am dying for a TPS BAND CD ! Please record some of your weekly jams and just add them all to a cd....Ill buy it !!!! You guys make awesome music, you think you are just noodling but its music and it rocks !!!!
North Connecticut??? North Carolina... Haha
Ah, sorry.
have you guys tried the pro jr through a 4x12 yet? try it on experience day. it'll blow your mind.
To whoever asked about ABY Hum too, if for any reason Dans answer doesn’t solve it, try physically moving it away from your pedalboard power supply. I had hum from mine being near my boards supply.
Auto-align plugin for amps to keep phase proper. Little Labs IBP for running amps- mix and match and effects or amps. These 2 tool offer a solution to the common problem you and many viewers have.
It’s a fix for sure, but FAR better to fix it in pre, then it sounds right in the first place.
@@ThatPedalShow yes, the IBP is a hardware unit as well and can fix phase issues in pre. Thank you for your reply. You guys are my weekly staple. Thanks for all that you do!
IF I need to play louder, I must acquire a larger playing space. I know that a 10 'x 11' rectangle is NOT it. But, what is big enough? And should it be stocked with several hundred live humans?
What does "Vintage" really mean? It's become more a sales term than an historical fact based assessment of value. Will there be an extended set of "Vintage" labeled instruments? Or, will we be called to coin a new label which may be designed to promote inflated pricing once again? Yes! History will repeat.
For guitars, vintage means BH. Before Hendrix, I reckon. Mick here. After that, they’re just old guitars. Cheers!
Did u forget the de-sss er Mick? Lol the S's are a little aggressive. But thank you for posting this 🙏
Just to say Mick I don’t think your Goldtop does have quite the same Custombuckers as that Pelham blue SG did, at least with respect to potting as you were talking about. The Custombuckers up until 2019 were lightly potted, which I think is what your Goldtop would fall under. For the 60th Anniversary 1959 Reissue models released in 2019, and all other reissues Gibson made in 2019 and since, Gibson changed to “unpotted” Custombuckers, and promoted it as being another step towards vintage accuracy with respect to the original late fifties PAFs.
This is likely to be the reason why yours doesn’t squeal but the more recently made SG did; although I have a number of guitars with the unpotted Custombuckers or unpotted PAF replicas from other pickup makers, and I don’t have any issues with squeal, except if I were to go to extreme high gain.
Nice! This works for me, and explains the difference. Cheers David!
@@ThatPedalShow no probs. My level of geekery with respect to Gibson reissues over the last 20 or so years knows few bounds!! 🤔😜🤣🤣🤣
Mick, I'd be interested to know what solution you're looking at for internet access. As a Network Engineer, I'm always interested in such things.
First I need to know the questions to ask. Then we might proceed to answers.
Yeah recovery!
Just a heads up, there's a LOT more science and cabinet/horn design behind how line arrays work than just arraying speakers vertically vs horizontally, and it doesn't really apply to stacking cabinets vertically vs side by side, especially when those cabinets are guitar speakers playing different signals. Beyond the box design, It has everything to do with the physical size (length) of the array, inter cabinet angles, DSP etc...
Just a friendly bit of education from one sound engineer to many guitar players :) Just place your cabinets how it works well on stage for you 👍🏼
Sixth sense wasn't a "it was all a dream" movie at all. It was a masterwork of misdirection. Just saying.
Agree, the “all a dream” thing doesn’t apply. Bruce character was a ghost. I don’t think that’s a cop out. Like you say, artful misdirection.
@@ali2ndmail Spoiler Alert
I totally get Micks "dislike" for want of a better word for modelling amps, however I do wonder if hes actually tried it in a more traditional way. Axe into a stereo neutral(ish) valve amp - a Fryette LX11 or a PS100, or a pair of PS2as - feeding 2 cabs i a wet/dry. OR even just a single PA - using the Fryette PS-2a. This was is far more like a traditional rig, effectively having an infinite number of amps to put thorough your single/duel cabs. id be interested in if his optionion changes after doing this at volume (I dont mean completely reverse to a convert - but changes to a more positive one).
Yep, tried it all ways. Though it does beg the question that if you have a tube power amp why you would put digital up front!? Makes no sense to me. As with recording, I find the further the digital is pushed down stream from the instruments, the better.
@@ThatPedalShow lol. Ive used the Axe-FX since 2008. What drew me to it was getting the sound in my head I just could do with an amp - there was always something niggling me. I have used amps too - and am looking for a nice quality 1x12 and some pedals to take me to old age (at 56 now) - a TR Studio Sig maybe or a Dr Z. to be fair - I play a lot at home, and most gigs Ive done as a guitarist have been functions on a quiet - or quiet-ish stage, so the digital route does suit that. Both my current bands Im actually the keys player - though both the guitarists use modelling (one a AFX3 the other a kemper). Just wondered if youd actually tried that route - as many havent (totally get why).
@@ThatPedalShow Flexibility and indecision? The space and financial cost of owning lots of real valve amps can be prohibitive, and if you're still on the early stages of your journey and can't make up your mind... Currently using the Helix's Hiwatt preamp model into the fully open power amp of (essentially) a Hamstead Artist 20 and Friedman Vintage 4x12, and it sounds killer. But I could try any number of preamp models, like a Bassman.
Digital is an interesting question. When done properly, it really can be truly transparent (I have a Merging audio interface), but (a) it's generally not done properly and (b) analogue colouration is both seductive and a valid artistic choice.
Silverchair RIP
Remember, a badly earthed amp and guitar killed Keith Relf of the Yardbirds. Meat Loaf was Marvin Lee Aday (but he changed his first name to Michael because Marvin was his abusive father's name
Can somebody please tell me why they are greeted with hello leggings? Not even sure that I'm spelling that right
Leg-ends. Legends.
I guess I have to ask Mick how he got the nickname “Babbers “ for Katherine 😂
Her family name is Bebbington.:0)
Hi guys! When is the next Q&A?
Hello! It will be Monday 15 April. Apologies for the break in service!
@@ThatPedalShow Just when I had a question to ask you decide to take a break, haha 😂 No worries!
Well, just listen to comments of performers you admire. Do they simply play whatever on whatever with whatever? Or, are they constantly searching for what supports their artistry. Has (ever) a producer become well admired by purchasers of a recording by throwing out all artist input and just manipulating notes. Impossible. Producers do whatever is necessary to support the quality of both artistry (output) and recording (capture) to the fullest extent of their current capabilities. And, knowing the value of capturing artistry requires artistry be present. You two repeatedly present that truth within the context of gear which may promote greater artistry. Players, gear makers and recording persons are all aided in their tasks when listening with a growingly keen mind is welcomed.
