    I so value great brick and mortar stores, from the personal connection to the opportunity to try a number of products to great service to just supporting the local economy, that I'll give them my custom whenever possible.
    In my view, the shift of business from local merchants to indifferent online conglomerates is among the many dreadful consequences of all the pandemic responses that I'm happy to do my bit pushing back on.

    Change is welcomed. I dedicate a different electric guitar to my weekly Worship Team commitment, monthly. I also use a multi-effects pedal in lieu of my pedal board. I am required to use an "in ears" system each week. Each guitar change initiates a series of reviews of settings to achieve an optimized character for each weekly performance. Each weekly practice afford the opportunity to review settings of the dedicated "WT" patch while I listen to the performance of other members (who enjoy at least a partial rotation). Then, on Sunday morning we have a rehearsal, at which point I commit to the "weekly" improvements. The "secular" band I'm in allows me to use a tube amp and not "in ears". That ensemble is supported by at least three "patches" of the multi-effects unit and 339 guitar. I use what I've learned from each "rig" to inform settings choices influenced by both other "rigs" and "at home" practice. I, "easily", spend more time on these efforts than on developing my parts (which remain as "live" as possible). The goal is always to find settings which minimize the need for "tweaks" at a "gig". I need to "just play" when I play. My perception of "my tone" is forever improving, to the point that I am ensured to need to revisit settings regularly. Each "system" will always include me as both a component and master of any change "required" and gear component change must be integrated "freshly" to suit ever improving tweaks (which should be accepted as needing to be endless). This "need" ends only if I "give up". I "keep going".

    I started getting buzz and humm and radio frequencies… I have GigRig power and so forth, so I was getting angry. Discovered the problem was the hex nuts on my tuner pedal and on the front of my quartermaster. CHECK THE NUTS!

    My 15 watt tube amp is to the 1 watt setting and volume at 3. It produces 72db in a 10ft x 11ft rectangular room. Using those dimensions (admitting that watts vary) the relationship of wattage to room volume is then 1 watt to 110 sq. ft. with an 8 ft. ceiling height the cu. ft. is 880. But, I assume the upscaling is NOT linear! Also, I am only 5 ft. from the amp in that small room. In a larger room I prefer to be at least 10ft away from the speaker. at that distance the dB may increase to 80+. If I leave the amp setting the same except for the power let out at 15 watts, I need a volume scale factor per watt to size a larger room. I've played venues easily as large as my 'open' 20 ft. x 25 ft. by 9-16 ft. vaulted ceiling with the amp on 15 watt mode and set on a volume of 5-6. I cannot play louder than horns and drums (without microphones). An amp with about15 watts would seem to be the best power to apply to a small venue. I think I've just answered my own question!

    Chris Evans had Mark Knopfler on
    He told a story about when he was changing changing strings back stage one day
    Talking heads were there and as they pased asked "Hey whatcha doing there?"
    Aparently he was the guy to show them all how to change stings for the first time in Shefield -- back in the day --- well made me chuckle

    Adrian Belew played the Berkeley Square when they were touring Twang Bar King, and they had dinner on the Rider. They were quite surprised by the Table Cloths and the full Dinner cooked up by our Head Chef Lucien, he said that they usually just hoped for a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken as best possibility. And he said that my Backstage was cleaner than his house. 😉

    27:19 As soon as I get in a band the first thing I ask is “Ok. Who else can sing.? Cuz I don’t wanna do it all the time 😂.” And I’m the singer.
    “YOU sing it!” 😂
    40:36
    The AVII line is nitro and while people do moan about the “poly undercoat” (I’m pretty sure it’s actually just a grain filler) the nitro is extremely thin. Mine has play wear at the arm bevel from just under a year of heavy play. I love that guitar. Custom Shop killer. At least mine is. It’s basically everything I would have spec’d out with the Custom Shop in a few years for my 50th but I got my guitar cheaper and sooner! I must admit that, despite my love for those degaussed vintage style pups, I’m thinking about swapping the neck out with a TX special for that spank. 😂

    Sorry I missed live chatter. In the Attack discussion, a critical part to recognize is that you are hearing the Ratio of transient to tailing tone. So enhancing the trailing tone can make it seem like you have less attack with the exact same transient. Have a play with the Eventide Split EQ which separates transient and tonal to understand that

  • @vw9659
    @vw9659 Місяць тому +1

    In the attack discussion you could also have mentioned your direct experience with a profound example of the factors in attack - Dan's tele neck pickup rewind with Matt at Monty's. The only change was the pickup. Yet the guitar went from having a lacking attack to having a very nice attack. Which can only mean that the high attack frequencies were there in the strings all along. It only needed the right pickup to transduce them. Direct measurement of string vibrations do show that guitar strings contain much higher freqeuncy content than almost any pickup can see. The highest frequencies are very short lasting though, simply due to the physics of maintaining a high frequency vibration in a stiff string (harder for high frequencies) - which is why those very high frequencies are limited to the attack phase.
    In summary, your experience shows that the heard attack is very heavily influenced by the pickup.
    The differences between the acoustic sound of the SGs led to a raft of speculations, with not a lot of objective evidence to support them. The subtractive effect of various structures that directly contact the strings are the logical candidates. Things like cavites do become important in the acoustic sound waves from semi- and hollow-body guitar guitars. Whether the pickup cavity is enough to do that in the HB SG is doubtful. Determining if those acoustic differences are still present in the pickup output would be interesting, but confounded by their different pickups. Things like cavities or the top surface reflections of acoustic sound waves from the strings would not be likely to influence the pickup output. In which case some peoples' attaching great significance to the acoustic sound would be questionable.

    1.20.45: ref the fuzz thing - agree with both of you in terms of getting the fuzz thing from other sources for live use (Butter Machine does the SD9/fuzz thing for me on one board). In addition to the Warthog, I’d mention the Cornerstone Nero: you can dial in how much fuzz you want with the drive circuit. I’m using it for a rock sound as well as the singing leads, and it cleans up nicely.

    SM58, SM57, and SM11 are all the same cartridge, but the housing changes the acoustic performance. I really dig using the SM11 resting against the inside of a kick drum head, or the superfluous inside of the combo tone because it is omnidirectional and does not have the proximity effect of the other mics. Not sure about recording, probably too sloppy for that.

    • @thomascordery7951
      @thomascordery7951 Місяць тому

      The SM11 has an overall smaller diameter (9/16") than the SM57 and SM58 diaphragms (29/32"), so they cannot be the same. The diaphragms for the latter two are too big to fit an SM 11 cartridge.
      It may be correct that SM57 and 58 use the same diaphragm, but the overall cartridge assemblies are different. Of the three mics, the replacement cartridges are R11, R57 and R58 respectively.
      I do recall a Shure big, clunky lavalier from the early 1970s that had a cardioid pattern; I wouldn't be shocked to learn that its diaphragm shared a parts bin with the 57/58. It was too big to clip onto clothing, so came with an adjustable lanyard to hang around the user's neck.

    Mike Adams (Puisheen) has plenty of videos about it. Would be great to have him on the show to talk offsets and vintage guitars -he's one of the Mikes at Mike & Mike Guitar Bar in Seattle.

    Maple is one of the cheapest woods in the world and Rosewood one of the most expensive. THAT is a giant factor in peoples arguments about tone woods. Dark chocolate Brazilian rosewood is awesome But most have never played it. How many Maple neck acoustics have you played? Rosewood sounds scooped in the mids as to Maple to my ears. With a fender you can swap an exact neck with the exact same frets and nut material and test this . Using a looper to A to B compare anything guitar related is a game changer by the way . Eliminate short term memory.

They're an American company that's been reproducing hiwatt designs with the blessing of the Reeves family, and have reproduced the tonality of the fane speakers from the 70's with the help of eminence speakers. Also, I can bear witness to the fact that F hole makes some difference to the thinline tele's design. Under a cranked house I can feel the air beating out of my tele's F hole. It's more solidbody tone than not, but it's something.

    Hi leg ends…I’m just getting into mods and committed the cardinal sin of removing the single coils from my MIJ Strat and replacing them with 2 low powered minihumbuckers. It’s made the guitar much more useable for my faux jazz and can even handle stoner rock, would you believe…the guitar isn’t ‘vintage’ by any means, so I reckon mods are now a thing for me. Why leave a guitar in a cupboard unplayed when one can cheaply make it versatile and actually played? Thanks for all you do and hello from Brisbane.

      Once you have good audio play back equipment, it’s the same as any instrument, the law of diminishing returns applies… Only you can decide with your own ears and personal “feel” whether what you are hearing and feeling is more magical to the extent there is no thought of the equipment, only a wonderful experience which the more affordable solution did not give you. It’s basically the same psychological concept for anything you can do in an affordable manner compared to the high end. If you do spend serious money and do NOT get that magical experience, then I suggest it will have been a waste of time and money. But if you get it right the experience is wonderful and all the negatives just fall away. 🙂
