thanks! Yep, that's my background vocal. The live tracks do sound clean. Tracks direct into the board, "in ear" monitors, with no stage monitors helped. The hall (Union Chapel) was a pleasure to play too, both visually and acoustically.
@@GeeBee135 Thanks Gary! I enjoyed recording and performing with Devin. He is a dear friend and amazing human being! He first heard my Space Music when it was originally released as Emerald Web albums in 1980 and 1981 ("Sound Trek" and "Valley of the Birds") Those 2 albums were recently remastered and rereleased. www.katepple.com/emeraldweb-valleyofthebirds
It always surprises me how many people fail to think outside the metal box. They often want to pigeon hole artists and, once they have learnt to like what they do in one particular genre, to refuse to give the artist the freedom to explore their different musical talents. Devin is a man who does not conform. He does what he wants and sets incredibly high standards. I love SYL as much as I love things Devin does on the other side of the musical spectrum. No, he has not lost his balls. I'm sure he's saving them for later. In the mean time I sit back, relax and enjoy a unique talent, so rare in the music industry that I cannot name anyone with the same amount of courage. Talking about having balls!
Joop Klepzeiker Little do people know, Hevy Devy is the epitome of an artist who writes from soul. He doesn't write FOR fans. He writes from his emotions. Let's not forget how great of a musician he actually is, and song writer, and producer. Would GWAR get a dud to produce one of their records? Don't answer that, please.
Damn. 2011. Time flies, I remember listening this for the first time and I still hear it like it was my first time! I've been following Devin since Ki and it's being a wild ride.
Oh man have i been missing out. Discovered Devin 8 days ago and i just can´t get enough of this masterpiece. Really get´s to me and always keeps me in a good mood. THUMBS UP Devin
god i love devin you know? You dont tell devin what genre he plays in he puts it out and you like it or you dont. Hes an artist in its true sense. doesnt care about ratings doesnt care about followings he just cares that he puts out his soul and thats that. to the best front man/songwriter. artists of my generation
This is easily in my top 5 of his entire catalogue. It’s crazy how good his music is regardless of style. One of my biggest regrets is never seeing him live.
I spend my life learning and improving but creating music is not a calling of mine which in some respects does give me freedom to enjoy music in a way some people can't. I'm glad that you feel the way you do:)
Devin is the very pinnacle of experimental music channeled directly from the psyche. The man is a musical genius, but I don't have to tell you all that.
it was the most beautiful experience, truly emotional.....lots of hardened metalheads in a gorgeous chapel absolutely spellbound...ive never seen anything like it before in my life..
I was at this show, and the other three that make up By A Thread. I'm not ashamed to say this gig had tears in my eyes at points. Especially Kawaii....
I'm a musician and I truly enjoy this, I don't bother even starting to criticize this masterpiece. There's a difference between music and Devin Townsend. Music is not a deity.
It's so weird seeing Dave back on keyboards, like he was on Alien by SYL This sounds fantastic though, absolutely love this song to bits, so relaxing, and the chords just flow so well together, cannot wait to see him for a 3rd time this December :D
Being a somewhat musician I have to say that while writing music is pretty rough to do, when you get it done and you have something like this you get to show it off to people. The best part of being a musician is seeing comments like yours and enjoying others' admiration and love of what you have made. :)
Love this boxset..Been a huge devin fan for a long time..Seen him live on the addicted he use his laptop for the samples and a back track..Nothing wrong with it it gives his live show a bigger depth and sounds better..
Not only does knowledge of music open up a whole other aspect to appreciate, it's voluntary. You don't have to do it. Everyone's free to just enjoy it.
He does not confine himself to a box and creates all genres "properly" and "deeply" from extreme metal to ambient music. He is the best musician of our time, underrated and not as well recognized as his abilities. It should have ranked #1 on the Billboard multiple times.
Nah, at least so far, metal seems to be the only genre that's still expanding and experimenting While I enjoy Devin's softer stuff, I really love the way he mixes in these kinds of emotions into a heavier song, like what he does in songs like Supercrush and Hyperdrive
Only Devin could write albums that stick so true to the true meaning of music. Only Devin could write such a tame album and not give a flying turd whether or not the critics hate it... Being a Christian, I think that some of his motives behind the different bands/project are a bit questionable from a Christian standpoint, but still - he's an incredible musician. To be honest, I'd love to do a project with a similar sound to Devin, yet with a Christian-based theme.
I have been here and seen your post (6 months now) and have always been a bit perplex, 43^? Things that impress or inspire makes we want to learn and improve, not thankfull or glad that will not achieve or try to. I get that you feel it, just not that you feel it and would not want to reproduce it.
Sure, and I'm sure he'd love to perform with a choir and orchestra and all too instead of samples, but it'd be impossible to have hundreds of people on stage with his current budget. He's explained that before too. So samples will have to do as most of his songs, due to the nature and complexity of his work, simply wouldn't sound good at all being performed by just four dudes (I mean there were like 80 vocal tracks on Infinity alone...)
Doh! You're right. A misread that. I'm sorry. Doesn't change the rest of what I said, though. I love how you say I need something to hate, yet you're the one who seems angry. Haha.
Devin really shot himself in the foot by releasing the first four DTP albums, didn't he? I honestly don't know if he'll ever be able to top them. (Not to say he hasn't put out great material since then, especially with Empath)
I was thinking the same thing when I saw this. The back tracks are overpowering. I could see if they were very low in the mix but they're WAY out front.
Devin didn't have a lot of time to do any real post-production with a lot of overdubs. I think people are confusing the pre-recorded backing tracks with overdubs simply because they are more prominent. They are more prominent because they are direct to the board with no signal loss or noise like you have with microphones. The guitars are also direct, so they are going to be a lot more even. The mix is going to be a bit off simply because you have a blend of mic'ed instruments and direct.
I know of Saviour Machine, they're great. :) However, I don't think there's ever been a project that has quite been able to mimic Devin's sound accurately, let alone a Christian band that does this. I actually consider Saviour Machine more of a Christian Gothic/symphonic metal band. That reminds me that I need to buy their albums, thanks for the reminder haha
Yes, there is. It's called Live In London. The word "live" matters. When a recording ceases to be "live," then consumers and fans have a right to question that.
if your gonna criticize his amazing diversity then im going to criticize your spelling cuz apparently you dont see that a great musician like devin is as talented as he is because he writes according to how he feels and if he just played metal then he would be like most musicians which is mainstream...devin writes when he is inspired and if all musicians did that then maybe we would have music still worth listening too
Yeah, had the same impression watching the DVD. Sounds like world record in overdubs and polishing. Really odd considering how fantastic live performer he is. Well, maybe it's really just overly loud backing tracks.
Łukasz Padzik [ZeeKat] I think it's moreso him treating a live recording like he does his studio albums-gating, compression, reverb. It's a stylistic choice
Tbh I think he added too many effects/background samples/vocals/whatever in the production of the DVD. I know he likes things perfect but I'd rather hear the live audio as it was...this almost feels like a studio version with some live vocals. Nevertheless, I reeeaaalllyy want this DVD but it looks like it's all sold out. Craaaaappp.
they're not live though right? it seems like her live vocals may not have been good enough to use so he just over-dubbed with the album version. that being said, you're right they're amazing.
Bedtimesnack I think she might actually be playing flute, but it's just simple playing that is really well blended. Vocals though, I really can't tell.
I know that I'm very late but the fact that she looks irritated and touches her earpiece a lot indicates that she had trouble hearing Devin. Her vocals were therefore probably off and that's why they decided to use the studio recordings of her for the DVD.
@@Akkarin1994 I thought she sounded too perfect. Here's a raw version, she's still good, but the flute mix was off ua-cam.com/video/c3DZiT4_zhg/v-deo.html

Incredibly well said
@Onikage people outside from Devy fanbase i guess...
Like Dev said, who eats the same thing for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, etc? Lunatics thats who
Perfect... 100% agreed.
i wish he would play more songs from this album live
That's EXACTLY what he did!!! This concert WAS the entire album played live.

Agree with you!! "Two weeks" from SYL is another great one that stands out

Back here again. Still my favorite of the easy listening DT songs.

yeah he has a alot of pre recorded backing tracks playing but having heard his real live vocals i really doubt he overdubbed any of his live vocals
it's wierd how he wrote all thos SYL songs, and also gave out Deconstruction at the same date as Ghost.

Sounds like it yeah.. Doesn't really looks like the woman on stage is putting the same emotion in the vocals as there is in the actual melody we hear.
