devin is amazing, once there was a problem with his show and he basicaly did an stand up for about 15 minutes until all the equipament was fixed, listen to Failure live from plodiv, he plays with the local orchestra and it is incredible
You have to check out "Why" from his latest album "Empath". It's basically a whimsical Disney/Musical song. And I'd also love to hear your take on "Genesis" . It's... all over the place, in the best possible wayXD
I saw this tour , in Melbourne. He was playing a small-fish venue in Northcote - and Devin absolutely nailed it. This song brought grown-men to tears. He was amazing. What a sensational singer and performer. I've met him in person after a tour and he was a delight and humble guy to speak with.
@@69Tiburoncito If I remember correctly, Devin's only condition to be part of the project was that he would come up with his own stuff for his part. I'm not 100% sure if it was Devin Townsend or someone else but this is something he'd probably ask. And his contribution was amazing...so was the album , now that we mentioned it, one more praise for Arjen Lucassen won't hurt.
I've seen Devin six times over the last 12 years and he's always a blast. He owns the stage and you never know what's going to happen. One of those artists I'd recommend to see even if you're unfamiliar with his music. Always an experience.
He's one of the best I've seen at navigating jaw-dropping vocal performances while rolling with occasionally rowdy audiences and making it all part of the show. Unbeatable, this guy. I saw him with SYL in a small club 20 years ago...and I thought Devin might explode navigating those insane vocals. I was literally scared for him. The way he goes from fry-tones to incredibly smooth, classically-tinged head-tones. Just amazing.
Thanks Doug - This was shot on an audience member's phone. He does a pro=recorded version for CBC in Canada. The end high note, he almost does like a circular breathing and he holds that note forever. To see his acoustic sets and hear even more colors in his falsetto and full voice is amazing.
Love him. He has an amazing voice and stage presence. I only found out he existed halfway through 2020, and I now own most of his music. There's a ton to get through, and it is so varied that most people would likely find something to love in his catalogue. If only more people were exposed to his work.
Same! Heard his quarantine livestreams recommended by another artist I know who was livestreaming. One of the very few good things to come from the pandemic for me :) What an artist!
Devin is my favorite performer, either alone or with a band. He says he is am introvert, but he enters a stage he is giving all his musicality and humor to the people present to the best of his capabilities. 💪👍🖖🎵🎶🎯
Love that you chose this! I can see your passion for the background of the song its palpable lol. Something that shows off Devin's voice really well and isn't really heavy metal is his live performance of "the death of music" from Royal Alberts Hall. Mind blowing vocals!
Brilliant! I did suggest doing Devin even before your brother, and now you can’t get enough of him! Join the club! Devin is music, kids will learn about him in school one day
That's a nice way to spend your lunch break! Love so much Devin, I recommend highly to check out ''Deep Peace'', ''Pixilate'' or ''Ki'', all three songs are great, emotional and vastly different from each other! Love your channel, keep up Doug!
I have a feeling you would love the live version of Why, his own, one-in-the-catalog musical theater aria, with great audience participation in tow...not to mention Devin as Odile...
I was at his Australian version of this gig - it was an acoustic set in a small theater and it was fantastic. He's just like in that vid all the time, and towards the end he did a sit down QA and/just talk to the audience. Really great, lovely person. Can't suggest seeing him live enough. If nothing else, I was really down when I went to the show - almost didn't go. Left happier than I'd been in a long time.
I've seen Devin 7 times live, and I can say that Doug's smiling face in the thumbnail looks just like everyone in the audience at his show. It's not just a concert; it's a whole experience, like a Flaming Lips show, or seeing "Mars" from Holst's Planets played by a live orchestra. GOD (yeah! --👀), I miss live shows ...
Another vote from me for the live version of "Why" by the genious that is Devin Townsend! ...and please do the Official Promo Video version from the 2020 live album "Order of Magnitude". Brilliant as the quarantine version is, I think this one is even better and you get that interaction between Devin and the audience as well, which in my mind is equally as impressive as his musical talents. Anywho, keep up the good work! I like the overall feel to your reactions; nice and factual without being overbearing, thumbs up.
Whenever you get a spare 30 minutes, either for youtube or just your own personal pleasure check out his trio of songs Funeral, Bastard and Death of Music (live at plovdiv is my personal favourite performance)...astounding stuff.
And don't forget, while singing this and still connecting to the audience he also accompanies himself on the guitar and the picking is - well not overly complicated when you concentrate on it but he does two other things at the same time and never misses a note, so that's also frikkin awesome.
Wow, i've never seen this before, and i've listened to a ton of Devy! This guy is unbelievable. If you liked this i recommend watching his Quarantine concert version of his song Why. Its a similar musical style, and he absolutely nails it!
You're killing me Doug, just kidding, I actually love hearing something new that was outside of my radar of music. I know a Irish Singer who has an amazing voice I didn't know until a visit to Ireland and hearing his songs on the radio.
Devin is such an excellent musician in every sense of the word! I was a fan of Strapping Young Lad, his metal band. It's honestly great to see him so healthy, too. There was a time when he was not ok.
What a performance. God He is good! 1 more vote for Devin's song "Why" I think you would enjoy it :) And keep up the the good work :) Love this channel!
i had to do a double take, i saw the thumbnail and for a hot minute i thought this might be the daily george rr martin. i love devin, but i hadnt seen this clip before. my god, devin is a true treasure. his stage presence and charisma are second to none. an entertainer on all levels. i am fairly certain that the only things he can't do, are just the things he doesn't have time to do. fantastic just doesnt even say it
Failure by the Devin Townsend Project has him singing pretty high, and a bunch of odd time signatures. There's a live version from Plovdiv with an orchestra backing him.
For Devin with the audience there's a 15 minute video of him entertaining a crowd (either in Spain or Italy, I forget) when the computers controlling the backing tapes failed. He is charming.... EDIT - Spain - ua-cam.com/video/pYQmUNzkYAQ/v-deo.html
I saw Devin in a ball room. I was 2 ft away from him.. It was amazing.. I was in a trance. one of the best shows of my life.. and my hobby is going to concerts.
Bring Him Home is one of my all time favourite songs! As others has mentioned here, you should really check out Devin singing Why. It's like a beautiful and funny musical number but with his own flair.
Please react to Ne Obliviscaris! one of their songs is studied in the sydney conservatorium and I would love to hear your thoughts on their style. I specially recomend the song Forget Not
2:48 Look up the video where he spends about 15 minutes entertaining the crowd with stand up comedy while technical issues are fixed at his show at the BeProg Festival 2017
Great reaction! He's a very entertaining performer, that's for sure. I think that Why, Failure (at Plovdiv), and Stormbending would be good reactions songs for you. Maybe Grace (at the same concert as kingdom you reacted to)
My favorite recording of Devin doing this song is on facebook. Definitely check it out if you're inclined. It's a professional recording from CBC's "First Play Live" and easy to find in a search. He does a metal scream at the very end, but the video is incredible, in my opinion. It was available on UA-cam but for some reason it's no longer watchable in the States.
Dammit! I found out he was playing in auckland after the fact. I would have mived heaven and earth to get to that gig and seeing this im even more gutted i missed it.
Love your technical and professional analysis on your reactions, had never heard of Devin Townsend till you reacted to a prior video, interesting act, heavy as well as great and interesting voice. Hope to explore a little bit more of his music in the future. Would love though if you could react to Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s ‘Far Beyond The Sun,’ ‘Icarus Dream Suite Opus 4,’ ‘Evil Eye,’ or ‘Little Savage’ off his 1984 debut album ‘Rising Force,’ all brilliant masterpieces, essentially’Far Beyond The Sun’ Yngwie was only 20 years old when he composed, recorded and released the album. Yngwie was and still is one the most influential rock guitarists since Edward Van Halen and Randy Rhodes, and ushered in the Neo-Classical Rock Guitar movement. Thank you, and as always great and fun channel.
On our drive to Atlanta for ProgPower USA III back in 2002 we listened to music from the bands as a few of them were unknown to us at the time. We listened to a couple Devin Townend and Strapping Young Lad tracks and didn't go back to it, finding Edguy and Silent Force more to our liking (we were going for Gamma Ray and Blind Guardian.) On stage... Devin Townsend was amazing, as he is an entertainer. Still not a fan of all his music, but I'm a fan of him, and have watched quite a few UA-cam clips of his live shows.
Check out Twisted Coil by Ayreon from Into The Electric Castle Live show. It’s sung by one very talented Damian Wilson, who has been a metal artist also for many years but also did a stint (a year or just over I believe) playing Jean Val Jean in London. Also, he is a top bloke, have had the pleasure of meeting him at one of his acoustic shows and he is totally down to Earth. Check it out, I doubt that you will be disappointed.
If that is a sample of his work, I am a fan! The name you have forgotten is Russell Crowe who played Javert. I totally agree with your assessment of him.
Doug, check out Devin's bio. He churns out songs ranging from Ants (delivered in a frenetic and carnival crazy rambling way) to his own flowery gentle tunes that mirror the feel of Bring Him Home. He believes a long un-diagnosed health disorder is the root of extremes in his music.
I ❤️ Devin Townsend Unique character & very talented musician & singer I saw him March 7th 2020 at The Plaza Live, Orlando, FL What a night, totally awesome Was last live show I saw before the COVID b/S hit! I’m going to see him August 2021 at www.bloodstock.uk.com He headlining one of the 5 days of the show He’ll have his full band with him & hope a symphony orchestra too Can’t wait 😊
Hi Doug, I'm very interested to see your analysis and reaction to symphonic black metal. Please take a look at Dimmu Borgir- Gateways (Live- Forces of the Night), it features the Norwegian national orchestra and also a live choir. Definitely a lot to analyze and I think you might like it.
Devin also has a metal side. If you want to try something unique listen to the trio of "Funeral", "Bastard", and "The Death of Music" live at the RAH. Slow, unusual chord progressions, and some of the most intense vocals you've ever heard. If you were to try just one of the three, I would suggest "Bastard". Really interesting chord progressions. Very visceral performance too.
@@Doug.Helvering You can see towards the end, as he's circulating with the same progression, and there's lots of open string against the fretted shape moving up. It's often a nice voicing to have the shape moving against open droning strings.
Devin is awesome. Seriously good musician and singer, but he still goofs off and makes people laugh. This is my first time hearing this song, or anything about Les Miserables. I don't normally listen to this genre of music, nor do I have free time to watch movies. This was interesting, more so because of Devin.
Les mis is the only one i know and that is enough for me. Saw the dream cast special years ago on pbs or something. Anytime the color red comes up: "hey, what loctite do we use for this screw? Red or green?". Me: "RED! THE BLOOD OF ANGRY MEN!"
Hi Doug. I’d like to recommend that you check out Yngwie Malmsteen, particularly the track Icarus’ Dream opus 4, where he plays a bit of Albinoni’s Adagio. He is as much influenced by classical composers such as Paganini and Bach as rock players. For a more fiery track, Far Beyond The Sun is great. I would advise the studio versions as live he tends to show off and plays too fast!
Damn I wasn't ready for that one! Too bad this isn't the best rendition of this song he's done in my opinion, but still, so cool that you watched this one! Also here's my daily suggestion: :p Honestly, you being a classical composer, and seeing your reaction to stuff like Opeth, I really think a next step would be And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope. It's from a pretty extreme band called Ne Obliviscaris, probably more extreme than anything you've listened to so far, yet the music is so beautifully, tastefully crafted that it's been studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (one of Australia's most prestigious classical Conservatories). I think you can find articles about that by searching "ne obliviscaris study" on Google. Anyway, that's really a must, tho I don't know which version would be better to react to from the studio or live version. If it had to be one I'd go for the live in Colorado 2016, but the studio version alone is better to really concentrate on the masterfull composition. I know you'll probably hate the harsh vocals from one of the two singers, as well as the overwhelming use of double bass, but I beg you to see past that and just look at the virtuosity. Eitherway, I enjoy your videos a lot, cheers from France :D
And talking about other Metal artists who worked with symphonic orchestra, you can listen to the awesome "Gateways" by Dimmu Borgir, from the "FORCES OF THE NORTHERN NIGHT" show, they're a symphonic black metal band, the mix of both world is just insane. Also anything from the first half of the live in Plovdiv by Devin Townsend, he did a whole set of his most theatrical and powerful (I would say) songs with a symphonic orchestra as well, it's a must!
I know you said you weren't much of a fan of his harsh vocals, luckily this man has made a lot of music and there's something for anyone. I look forward to watching your journey with him.
Here’s a version he did live this past Christmas on his charity stream. This one is in A. ua-cam.com/video/RG2FAxoehKU/v-deo.html Much better video and audio quality.
Love Devin, such a great performer. And I love this channel, can't wait for the next video.
It will never stop blowing my mind that this is the same person that sang Shitstorm
One more vote for Devin's song "Why"
he will love that
Been hoping he reacts to WHY for the past year. There's so much for him to dissect in it.
devin is amazing, once there was a problem with his show and he basicaly did an stand up for about 15 minutes until all the equipament was fixed, listen to Failure live from plodiv, he plays with the local orchestra and it is incredible
You are no doubt talking about this ua-cam.com/video/pYQmUNzkYAQ/v-deo.html
Let’s have a classic composer reacts to “not music”. ;-)
Devin Townsend is the single most brilliant musician on earth.
I've been a worshipper since 1998, and nobody has ever come close.
You have to check out "Why" from his latest album "Empath". It's basically a whimsical Disney/Musical song. And I'd also love to hear your take on "Genesis" . It's... all over the place, in the best possible wayXD
Genesis is everything at the same time, but it works !
The official live version of both! Played with no click or backing tracks!
Genesis is, IMO, Devin's Bohemian Rhapsody... It shouldn't work, it's 'too' long... and it's great.
I saw this tour , in Melbourne. He was playing a small-fish venue in Northcote - and Devin absolutely nailed it. This song brought grown-men to tears. He was amazing. What a sensational singer and performer. I've met him in person after a tour and he was a delight and humble guy to speak with.
You have to do more by him! The guy is a musical genius
Speaking about geniuses... Devin sang on the Ayreon Album The Human Equation of the brilliant genius Arjen Anthony Lucassen

You'd never guess that he "sang" or screamed for years in a way that everybody told him he's gonna ruin his voice.
For emotional, powerful and vulnerable and angry, try Death of Music live at Royal Albert Hall.
Damn I wasn't ready for that one! Too bad this isn't the best rendition of this song he's done in my opinion, but still, so cool that you watched this one!
Also here's my daily suggestion: :p
Honestly, you being a classical composer, and seeing your reaction to stuff like Opeth, I really think a next step would be And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope.
Please do Devin Townsend - Stormbending. It would be great to see your comments on it, such a great and powerful song.
Devin Townsend - Why? , the quarintine live performance.
Do some TesseracT my man!!
