  • In this gardening in Canada video we go over what fertilizer burn is and how it appears in the plants. The burning effect of fertilizer is going to take 1-2 days or longer depending on the type of fertilizer used. Then we are going to get into the science behind what is happening when the fertilizer burn appears in the plant. And last we talk about how to prevent fertilizer burn but also what do to if you notice it happening to your plants. Fertilizer burn is fixable but it just takes patience and water.

      Yes. My spreader disc fell off... and dropped about 1/2 lb of the half organic fert I use(same as our golf course uses. They have a nursery and sell it to home owners) The burn was about 2 sq ft in size, and kind of long oval shaped from the run off. After a year of getting no grass to grow in that area I hit it with the rototiller, mixed in some compost and peat and the grass finally took to that spot.

    Well done Mrs Scientist! I played myself, I applied Scotts "GreenMax" 5 years ago and it worked GREAT! my lawn was so green and flawless. Having such great results last time I decided to use it again this past weekend. Lets just say I got knocked out in round 2. I now have 3 large yellow burn marks in my lawn. After watching your video I think I got a lil trigger happy and over applied. Because we (Kansas) had 2 weeks of heavy rain I did not water in immediately. I quickly noticed the ground had dried up like a desert. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and I hope to have better results next time.

    Very useful and educational!! Thank you! Now I know what a burn actually is and how to deal with it. Yes, I burned my lawn (Bermuda) a few days ago-right at the spot where I was loading 32-0-0 into the spreader. Ugh!! I get the need to water if there is a suspected over-application (which I missed), but I have a question: If water, water, water dilutes the salt and forces it down, what does all that water do to the nutrients in the fertilizer?

    Good in theory however with potted plants and over fertilizing, how do u stop drowning yr plants by constant watering to flush out those nutrients? Too much water running on soil goes to the roots, therefore they can't breath as they need aeriation and will die?

    I found your video looking for “burnt lawn”, but in my case it’s not fertilizer… I live down south (Reno, NV) and last week I put a small inflatable pool for my one year old grandkid on the lawn. He played in it for a while, we then emptied the pool and went inside. We forgot to take down the pool, the day was very hot (around 100F) and the plastic sheet on the grass created a kind of an oven. When I remembered about it, late in the evening, I went to fold the pool and I found that the grass underneath has become completely brown like burnt by fire all the way to the roots. It has been a week, I have been watering it, but no signs to come back. Any suggestion???
    Thanks in advance…

    So I applied a lawn feeding to my Bermuda grass here in Middle Tennessee two weeks ago. Last night, I applied weed and feed mistakingly thinking that I had applied the fertilizer for weeks ago. I realized as soon as I finished my mistake and this morning I immediately ran my sprinklers On the area where the weed and feed was applied. My question is, if I start watering before I even see signs of burning will I be able to save my grass?

      Actually, it is the best videos about fertalizer burn, hands down. I have a minor in chemistry and I completely understood what you were saying. When someone says fetalizer burn, you don't really know what what that is. But when you understand it concerning osmosis then all the fear is taken away. You will understand how to combat overfertalzation. All you have to do is dilute the water in the lawn so the salt doesn't pull the water from the grass. I think what you are saying is that the water around the grass is too hypertonic and all you need to do is dilute the water. Boom! Great video!

    I put some grape seedlings into pots, but added some manure (called "veggie mix" by my nursery) into the pots part of the grape roots. I'm suspecting that there was too much manure in the mix, which caused the grape seedlings' leaves to burn over a period of about 6-7 days. Half the leaves of the grapes' leaves seemed to burn off. Is there any way to recover these seedlings? Will water wash be the solution? Or should I maybe transplant them into fresh pots with a sandier mix?

    how can we increase acidity of the soil in pot soil, organically?

    • @GardeningInCanada
      @GardeningInCanada  3 роки тому +2

      It’s probably naturally pretty high because it’s a peat based soil and peat soil is naturally acidic. But things like refreshing the peat and using manure will help.

      @@GardeningInCanada Well, I live in India and we don't generally get peat based potting soil here, so I was looking for some organic alternatives for peat moss. Could used teabags help?

    Put house plant outside on a perfect beautiful day with dark green leaves three hours later the plant turned blonde and the leaves are so thin in clueding some of the branches as for the bird bath the water has a brownish red color which was no where near the plant??? so the question here is... plant problem, or criminal damage. 🤔
