So pumped to cut grass this year! Thanks for another inspirational (and informative/educational) video Allyn! You are the Jerry Maguire that all lawns and DIYers need. You got the "Kwan"!!!
Yes sir. I have noticed over the last two seasons with all the different products I have tried and watering scheduling the thing that has helped my lawn the most is the mowing hands down. The lawn has responded so well to frequent mowing. Whether mowing tall or short just removing just the tips by mowing more often has helped to thicken the lawn, retain its color and over all health of the lawn. It uses up some much energy to re grow after taking off more than 1/3 of the blade. That rule definitely makes a difference and anything below that amount is a good start.
Thanks Allyn for taking the time to make this great and informative video. One thing I think you overlooked in the how to mow section of the video is the importance of a sharp blade on your mower. As a bit of a lawn nut myself, and when I gave advice from the True Value Hardware store where I sold fertilizers and lawn mowers, I always stressed to the customer to mow with a sharp blade... minimizing the "damage" you do to that grass plant. I keep several sharp blades on hand and change them out every two or three mowings on my postage stamp-sized 50' X 100' St. Augustine lawn. I think proper mowing (and watering) is more important than the fertilizer(s) one may be using. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video.
Thanks Allyn! Between your mowing practices and Pete's TTTF, I got neighbors asking me about my grass, which isnt perfect as it has a few weeds which I'll spray soon; but the fact that I'm being approached is pretty cool.
I like the analogy to working out. Some people just work out a little bit and spend tons of money on supplements expecting a miracle. It's huge business, and people just throw away their money really. Same with growing grass or gardening. Master the basics first like mowing, watering and feeding the lawn. Do some dethatching and aeration and weed control and you're like 99% of the way there. Then if you want to buy a super lawn supplement go ahead. 🤘

When I was 7-10 years old I can remember our Grandparents neighbor in Wisconsin cutting his lawn on a riding lawn mower every single day or every other day. His grass always looked amazing. Good points about making the grass look good. I have a 42 inch riding Craftsman lawn tractor 🚜 but recently spent $700 to get it all fixed up and running like new. In is a DLT 3000. I have been itching to get a Toro Super Recycler push mower for exercise and to allow my older kids the chance to be able to cut the grass. @@Thelawncarenut hey thanks I appreciate it. After watching a lot of your videos I realized I needed to mow more. I’ll definitely put this into practice and see how it goes!
Great information Allyn, as usual. The problem I run into quite often is here in the transition zone, (NC), a lot of my customers have a mixed lawn of warm and cool season grasses. Trying to cut at the right height is difficult. Also trying to convince customers that cutting it high and often is good for the lawn, especially older folks, is a struggle. They often say... "why don't you just cut it lower so you don't have to cut it for 2 weeks?"
Following the 1/3 rule... if you do get nutty and measure your grass for even just a couple months, trust me, you'll quickly develop the ability to tell at a glance when it's time mow. You'll know exactly what your grass looks like when it starts to get close to the max length to stay within the 1/3 rule without changing your cut height.
I knew about this 1/3rd rule, but never understood HOW to measure until he pulled a stem from the lawn and put it next to a tape measure. I mulch 98% of the time, since I'm up in the Florida Panhandle and we do go dormant during the winter. I even mulch my shrub clippings. Thanks for the comment, I really did need it :)

I have 4-5 different kinds of grass and a ton of weeds. I'm working on getting the St Augustine to be dominate. How will it go up against Bermuda grass
Even though I couldn’t get to the end of this vid (too much filler between actual information), the general tip was good to know. Thanks for the effort.
I'm curious as to what type of grass do you have. I've always loved seeing those really thick grass blades and wondered what that type of grass was called.
Great mowing lesson. Thanks. I hate Bermuda grass it invades my marathon constantly. Every year I have to manually pull it out before it takes over. Do you have a suggestion on how to kill it without killing the ornamental marathon.
Lol I know I have mostly marathon and the Bermudagrass I have is so opportunistic! Maybe dethatching would help and overseeing in the fall. I hand pull too. I haven’t tried dethatching but fescue doesn’t really have thatch like Bermudagrass.
@The Lawn Care Nut. Question for you. I live in Northern VA with a primarily Tall Fescue lawn (looking great after using your fert's and grass seed "Black Beauty" recommendations BTW!!!). I do have some Poa Annua, something I have never had in all my years at my house, so I have no idea where they came from. Anyways, I am thinking of treating the current weeds with an application of Tenacity now, and then maybe another in 2 months (split application) to kill the crabgrass and such that has been pestering me for the past few years. Plan is to overseed in the fall, and then early next year before the temps hit 55* I was going to start with Prodiamine to prevent the Poa Annua and other weed seeds from even starting. Is there anything I should tweek in this plan? I actually have time to hit my lawn hard with the attention that it needs, but don't want to do anything that would harm it more than it would help.
I have a 22” recycler (2018) with the 7.25hp motor. I’ve been wondering lately if a super recycler would be much of an upgrade for me. Would buying the 21” SS reduce my mow time? Does it have a more robust self pace system or is it pretty much the same mower as mine with a better ability to optimize mulching? Thanks in advance. The LCN has elevated my knowledge of turf maintenance and maximized my ability to dominate my neighborhood. They’re all in a competition of my making except they don’t know their lawns are participating.
I mowed high consistently for the first time last summer and had great success with it (TTTF/KBG). I had 1 issue though where my tire tracks were (zero turn), the grass would stay laid over and actually began growing horizontally and at times would be 10-12 inches tall. It's doing that again this year so ive been raking it before mowing and that helps, but i can't do that every time. What should i do differently?
Leaving clippings on the lawn, doesn’t it become thatch on lawn? that u have to remove end of the season by raking. I have cool season lawn and it produce lot of thatch. I hope u answer this concern because I am struggling with it. Thanks
Thatch doesn’t come from grass clippings, it comes from dead grass blades. You lawn constantly has to make room for new growth, and it does that by letting some grass blades die, and making more. However, if you aren’t mowing often enough and those grass clippings are too long, they will contribute to thatch.
I wish I knew how to get my 4 year old Bermuda to be stronger. It’s so weak (6.3 ph, here in Greenville SC) I have so many thin or small semi bald areas.
My backyard is Bermuda. Every year it dies off and weeds are the only thing left. I'm not over exaggerating. I have a couple of shade spots in my backyard and no grass will grow. Should I take plugs from my front yard st. Aug and transplant them to my backyard? It's either that or zoysia and I'm trying to save money, but I also don't want to waste my time. Also the only place my Bermuda is alive is in my flower beds 🤨
Kudos on the exercise, but you can't work the weight off. You gotta focus on the diet to lose weight. I did a courtesy mow last night. Thanks for the advice.
I've been following a lot of your guides with good success, though there is one issue I am having. I have a larger lawn I mow with a lawn tractor. The wheels tamp down the grass leaving the wheel tracks unmowed. Then in a day or so it comes back up leaving it higher than the rest and unsightly. Is there any way around this? Thank you.
I would level your deck. Put it down 1 notch and see if it creates more vacuum. Mine does the same thing in the heat of summer. Grass just gets too thin.
I have a Zoysia lawn. I would like to get that 1" height - but how do I get there without getting a brown 'scalped' look. Should I mow of a 1/2-inch every other day to get there?
What impact does mowing often have on the war on weeds? I’m a relatively new homeowner and learning my land - the kyllinga is killing me! I’m also struggling to know if I have Bermuda or St. Augustine grass... probably a mix of both with a huge helping of weeds 🤦♂️. Just sprayed an image app before 3-days of rain here in Tampa, FL.

LOL "that's what she said" Nicely done sir!
Great tips as always Allyn! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 P.s.- my daughter thinks those birds are kind of scary. 🤣😂
We call them pterodactyls
@@Thelawncarenut it reminds me a lot of those birds at the zoo- cassowary! 😅
Great tips Allyn. Can’t wait to put down that stress blend!
Nice! thrower down!
Love that hat!! I’m due for some new mowing clothing for the season! Great video Allyn!! Good tips as always!
Love the Sandhills Cranes
hey Allen over here where I am now the mowing has stopped cause of no rain so it stopped growing 😠
Last year doctor told me you are allergic to.grass. i mowed once a week and this year i will go for two times.. haha. Gotta luv it
Great, informative video. Makes me want to mow right now. I love those sunglasses!
Highest setting, sharp blades mow dry, and rotation your cut pattern.
Great video - your right on point with your mowing tips. 👍
You may be mowing while the grass is still damp. At least that’s been my experience with tire tracks
Always enjoy ur videos. Thanks
Yo Al , what’s your opinion on side discharge on cool season grass ? I noticed Pete (GCI) usually side discharges.
If it doesn't leave clumps it's ok but I prefer to actually mulch.
What about the mowing height for Centipede grass which is prevalent in the shoreline areas in the Southeast? Thanks!
I usually cut mine between 3 to 4.
Thank you for the video! Entertaining as well as educational! LOL
If I treat weeds growing up from my mulch, which surrounds my trees, will it also kill my tree's roots?
honey the crazy neighbor is laying on the grass again
Leaving clippings on the lawn, doesn’t it become thatch on lawn? that u have to remove end of the season by raking. I have cool season lawn and it produce lot of thatch. I hope u answer this concern because I am struggling with it. Thanks
Thatch doesn’t come from grass clippings, it comes from dead grass blades. You lawn constantly has to make room for new growth, and it does that by letting some grass blades die, and making more. However, if you aren’t mowing often enough and those grass clippings are too long, they will contribute to thatch.
@@ir3331 i see, make sense. Thanks
The GOAT growing a goatee? 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Reel mowing ain’t my thing . I love my toro timemaster . Rotary for life !!!!!!!!!!!
What is the highest height you can make your deck? Thanks!
Wait a minute you skipped my grass... centipede. What height do I cut it?
Still haven’t told me what height to cut centipede
@@mr08golddigger99 On earlier comments Allyn said 2-3"
I have a Zoysia lawn. I would like to get that 1" height - but how do I get there without getting a brown 'scalped' look. Should I mow of a 1/2-inch every other day to get there?
1:25 “excuse me we’ve been trying to reach you about your cars extended warranty....” 😂
i felt this
What impact does mowing often have on the war on weeds? I’m a relatively new homeowner and learning my land - the kyllinga is killing me! I’m also struggling to know if I have Bermuda or St. Augustine grass... probably a mix of both with a huge helping of weeds 🤦♂️. Just sprayed an image app before 3-days of rain here in Tampa, FL.
